So, I’m back to work today after two weeks away to spend time with my wife and Miss Varsity Insider. Both of them feel great, although Miss VI is quite demanding when she’s hungry. In fact, don’t fret if you find some spit-up in your rankings from now on.
Before I move on, I just want to thank this of you who sent well-wishes, whether they were comments here, texts to my phone, e-mails, etc. I truly appreciate them. I passed along your support to the fam.
It’s been a few weeks since I posted a set of rankings. These were incredibly hard — as they always are this time of year. So many teams knock one another off that it becomes more difficult to get a handle on who’s better than who. Just take a peek at Class AA. New Ro beats the likes of Middletown and St. Mary’s. Scarsdale beats New Ro. North Rockland sweeps through Rockland, but loses to Spring Valley by double-digits. Spring Valley needs every second to escape the likes of Clarkstown South and Ramapo. It’s enough to make your head spin.
Also, before I dive into the rankings, a quick announcement: Dan and I will release our midseason all-stars tomorrow morning on the blog. They will include four teams of players, our MVPs, coaches of the year and most improved players. Send us your suggestions for who you think belongs. Remember you can find me (@LoHudInsider) and Dan (@LoHud_DeFran)
Now, here are my latest rankings:
THE TOP 10
1. MOUNT VERNON (10-1) - Think of this: If New Rochelle and Scarsdale are final four contenders — or at least strong candidates to reach the quarterfinals — in Class AA, Mount Vernon must be a major, major favorite. Just consider that the Knights routed those two by a combined 48 points.
2. STEPINAC (12-3) - Other than one second half slip-up to Mount, the Crusaders have done exactly what they could’ve hoped. Their 78-72 win at Archbishop Molloy looks especially impressive now. Stepinac controlled the game throughout; Molloy routed Bishop Loughlin just a week later.
3. POUGHKEEPSIE (8-2) - I considered the Pioneers the favorite in Class A before the season and I think they’ve just about regained that spot. Even Sunday’s loss to Kingston is understandable; Kingston could win Class AA in Section 9. The best part if you’re a Poughkeepsie fan is that the team seems to be getting better and better.
4. BYRAM HILLS (11-1) - There are a handful of Class AA programs that you’ll argue should be ahead of the Bobcats, but not in my rankings. They are consistent, well-coached and really know how to finish games strong. Right now, I think that’s more than you can say about teams 5-10.
5. NEW ROCHELLE (6-7) - Man, this team is tough to figure. Considering it’s already late January, I think the Huguenots could prove to be an enigma all season long. They will be a terrifying low seed. They’ll also be on the road throughout the playoffs. Remember this about the record: New Ro has lost just twice inside the section, one of them by two points at Scarsdale. I can’t judge them by their record.
6. SPRING VALLEY (10-1) - As I said above and below, I don’t know that this is the best team in Rockland, but it has the best credentials, narrowly edging out Albertus and North Rockland. Those three will compete for the mythical County title until the bitter end, but Spring Valley should be here to stay. By now, its young roster is young in grade only.
7. ALBERTUS MAGNUS (11-2) - Since the season opener, this team has lost just once and it was in double OT at North Rockland in a game it very well could have won. Jack Sullivan has been fantastic, but the Falcons have thrived because the players around him can all contribute.
8. NORTH ROCKLAND (12-1) - After seeing all three, plus South, TZ and Pearl River, I still think North Rockland has more potential than any team in Rockland County. But the facts are what they are: Spring Valley beat the Red Raiders and Albertus beat Spring Valley. Yes, North Rockland beat Albertus, but that was by far the closest game of the three.
9. MAHOPAC (9-3) - As expected, the Indians were bound to return to the Top 10 and they have. Their early losses to Arlington and Kingston don’t look so bad now and they have been on a winning streak since losing to Stepinac in the Slam Dunk. Brendan Hynes may not be the most talented player in the section, but he is Mr. Production and plays on a Top 10 team. To me, that makes him one of the best there is.
10. PEEKSKILL (9-2) - Panas, Eastchester and Somers fans won’t be happy to see this, but I’d still peg Peekskill as the No. 3 or 4 team in Class A. Yes, the Red Devils lost fair-and-square, but they’ve rebounded well since the loss and their overall resume remains strong. I just can’t drop them from the Top 10.
The bubble: Eastchester (12-1), Scarsdale (10-2), Arlington (11-2).
Below are my Rockland, Small School, and Class rankings. They will start off as Top 5s but will expand later in the season.
Rockland Man, is this tough after the Top 3. I went with TZ as No. 4 because its recent resume (wins over Pearl River, Pleasantville, South) is the strongest. North, South, Nyack all have been inconsistent.
1. Spring Valley
2. Albertus Magnus
3. North Rockland
4. Tappan Zee
5. Clarkstown North
Small Schools I don’t think any of the Class C and D teams are in this class at the moment.
1. Briarcliff
2. Our Lady of Lourdes
3. Pawling
4. Putnam Valley
5. Croton-Harmon
Class AA Wins over South and North Rockland give Spring Valley the No. 2 spot, but I’d still take New Ro and North Rockland first when it counted. That will be an interesting story to watch. Mahopac and Scarsdale are also very hot. Both are in the conversation for County Center berths. Right now, I think those are the Top 6, with Arlington and South on the periphery.
1. Mount Vernon
2. New Rochelle
3. Spring Valley
4. North Rockland
5. Mahopac
Class A I still have to give Peekskill the edge based on the strength of its resume, but Panas has definitely joined the conversation.
1. Poughkeepsie
2. Byram Hills
3. Albertus Magnus
4. Peekskill
5. Eastchester
Class B The Top 3 from the previous rankings (Briarcliff, Lourdes and Put Valley) all dropped some games since, but Pawling is clearly a team on the rise, especially after last week’s win over Put Valley.
1. Briarcliff
2. Our Lady of Lourdes
3. Pawling
4. Putnam Valley
5. Croton-Harmon
Class C/D Palisade Prep lost twice last week but actually jumped in the rankings because of its win over Children’s Village. And despite a bunch of losses to Class A and B schools, I still can’t move Tuckahoe off No. 1 yet.
1. Tuckahoe
2. Palisade Prep
3. Children’s Village
4. Haldane
5. Solomon Schechter
CHSAA/Privates No changes to these rankings, which seem pretty solid. There’s a clear delineation between each spot in my mind.
1. Stepinac
2. Iona Prep
3. Sacred Heart
4. Masters
5. Rye Country Day

But it pains me to agree with hoops fan on anything but James is the most complete player we have seen this year
Bawler,
I saw Hynes against Stepinac this year. I saw Ryan 2x against Stepinac this year. Ryan probably does average 5-6-7 rebounds a game. Don’t discount the difference in the level of play Ryan sees every game (St Rays, Hayes, Stepinac, Molloy, CTK, etc). If Hynes was playing basketball in college, he’d be a nice DIII player. Ryan is a lock for a D1 player. Hard to argue that Ryan isn’t a better player.
Bawler,
We finally agree about something! Josh James is the most complete player around. For the record, I definitely do not know the stats of every kid. As far as accusing me of being partial to kids from Step and Iona…I probably am partial to kids from Stepinac. I doubt I’m partial to kids from Iona. I have seen Iona play twice, which is more than I’ve seen any Sect 1 teams so that may inform my choices a bit. If you look at this realistically, I am coming down on the side of the D1 player, you are coming down on the side of the DIII player…have you considered that you may have a public school bias? An objective observer might think the fan favoring the DIII kid is more biased than the fan favoring the D1 kid.
The great thing about all of these lists is they are subjective. Unless you classify them with things like “Best college prospect”, “Best Player”, “Best Stats”, “Best player on a good team”, etc… there is no real way of differentiating..For example, with any limitations Ryan and Degnan, Paschall are clearly better college (and d1) prospects than Hynes, Doughty, etc.. but one can debate if they are ‘better” or having better years…
Hoops..
Did not give thoughts to order.
Josh clearly at the top of the section. Unfortunately will disagree on Demarcus (but true, time will tell.. he will play in college im sure, but what level, and will he be in elite discussion in 2015, Im not convinced off what I have seen) and particularly on Naim. Lynch and Doughty are significantly better and more important to their teams.
Milton
Byram Hills VERY underated, Golden deserves mention, maybe not elite…whereas Groll nearing elite in county as sophmore.but Lynch still at 80% takes them from a nice 12 -6 type team to the 18 -2 Class A favorite i think they are.
Do you realize that basketball is hynes other sport …that he’s committed to Richmond for lacrosse..pretty good school huh …
Stop with the non sense about Matt Ryan
He is a sophomore averaging over 20 points a game in the CHSAA AA but more importantly he has been offered already by Fordham of the A-10 so more offers are coming- He is a major college basketball recruit. He is not competing against a cupcake schedule – The CHSAA AA is the real deal- End of Story.
So Somers is a cupcake?!
If they can’t handle the Indians then why bring out the chiefs???!!!
Statesmen
Look at Iona schedule and tell me where the easy part of their schedule is?

Iona,
I never said anything about Iona having a cup-cake schedule. I just pointed out the win against the cup-cake on 12/27/2012.
Downes is one of the best coaches in the area. Coach of the year a few years ago and a canidate for it each year. In the town of Mahopac, basketball is often overlooked and the 4th most popular sport. And he takes these kids to the highest level possible each year and gets the most out of his player, more so than any other coach. Its so easy to say coaches like Lou P and Cimmino are better coaches becuase of record, but you cant overlook the talent they get each year. Mahopac never has any college level basketball players but they have been to the county center past 2 years and most likely this year ago. Downes is the best coach around, bar none
Ball is Life
Well said and cant agree enough about your comment. I”ve know Downes for the past 5 or 6 years and as good a coach as he is he”s a better guy, I know its hard to believe it at times with his rants and raves, but you wont find a coach more dedicated to the program or his kids. His past players all come back and he loves seeing them.
I have to say that the teams in the top ten are good but I do not think Poughkepsie is that good. They are a team of individuals.
OldHead,
I agree Byram Hills is a good team, solely off them playing LInden close. I don’t know if they’ve had any other tough games this year. Too bad they couldn’t have gotten into the Slam Dunk to show their stuff.
As far as Doughty, Lynch and Thomas. Doughty and Lynch MAY be more important to their team’s success this year, but no way are either of them ‘significantly better’ than Thomas. THomas is a junior, while the other two are seniors, but in terms of talent, skill or performance this year, Thomas has had an excellent year. Doughty had the big game vs Loughlin, but I’m not sure how many other big games he’s had this year. Thomas has been consistently good going against some big time guards. You’ll have to fill me in what Lynch did against Linden – but his competition level is “signifcantly” different than Thomas’. I can see Doughty ending up at a lower D1 school like a St Francis, Quinnipiac, etc. I can see Naim Thomas playing D1 as well – just based on his Jr year performance…with an extra year of improvement he could do even better. What level do you think Lynch will end up? I know nothing about his recruitment.
Saw Downes coach many times and i am NOT impressed..most recently saw him get out coached and out classed at the county center by….yes STEPINAC . I think his teams play hard but alot of teams play hard. He is abusice to the officials and his kids follow his lead. In CHSAA i think maybe Blessed Sacrament might hire him…and only because they are closing next year.
Hoops..
I dont know about Lynch’s recruitment. I am assuming lower d1 or high d3 based on his health.
Im not as big a fan of Naim. Frankly think he was this good as a frosh and not gotten bigger or better which will effect his college prospects. I may be wrong but I sure dont see him at D1 level. Do you think he is better than DeQuan Brickhouse from Peekskill ? I dont think he is close and he went low d1 and dont think he stuck
OldHead,
I wouldn’t assume that Lynch is a lower d1 scholarship player. Do you have any idea how good D1 guards are – athletically and with the ball? He’s a nice player – don’t get me wrong – but D1 guards are very, very good.
As far as Naim, if you think he hasn’t improved you haven’t been paying attention or watching him play this year. He has improved leaps and bounds in terms of confidence, composure with the ball and most importantly production from last year to this year.
I think Naim and Brickhouse are two completely different kinds of player. Hard to even compare them. Brickhouse was shorter and much thinner than Naim to start. Brickhouse was a great athlete, very quick, quick jumper, not a great shooter – none of which really translate that well onto the next level for a 5’8” 140lb pg. Brickhouse’s entire game was his athleticism – which was impressive, but its tough to live off at that at the college level at his size. Naim has a very good handle, is a much better shooter than Brickhouse ever was, plays under control and is much more solidly built. As far as a college prospect, I think Naim was probably better and he still has another year to improve. Naim also plays in a big-time league so he gets seen by a ton of college coaches during the year and battle-tested against literally a couple dozen D1 players this year. Naim also seems to be a nice kid in control of himself. Brickhouse I’m sure was a nice kid, but he seemed to march to the beat of his own drummer which likely was a large factor in his not lasting long at his first college stop.
A healthy Lynch could play (maybe not start or star) in the D1 Ivy league. The Brick comment was to put D1 in perspective is all, not saying Naim and he were comparable.
Point on Naim was he was this talented as a freshman, had a great handle then too..of course his production has increased, you expect that of a junior. But as you point out on Lynch, its a huge step to D 1 particularly at both of their (and Brickhouse’s) size regardless of skill level. Time will tell..
Old head,
I’ve watched naim play for three years and there is a big difference in his game this year. He was quick and had a nice handle as a frosh and soph, but this year he is shooting the ball much, much better, controlling the ball (limiting TOs) and controlling the offense much, much better. Huge improvement. Naim was talented as a frosh – lots of kids have talent – but he is really putting it all together this year. He should be even better next year when josh James graduates and his role gets even bigger.
