It seems the trend of buzzer beaters we have seen all week has now translated into upsets as well, with the CHSAA as the first victim.
Locally, the big shocker of the night was Stepinac falling to Mount St. Michael. The Crusaders led 32-20 at half but struggled shooting the ball in the second half.
Marcus Patterson would leave the hero for the Mountaineers as the senior hit the go-ahead shot with 2.5 seconds remaining to hand Stepinac its third loss of the season.
Matt Ryan’s 26 points weren’t enough as Iona Prep fell to Fordham Prep in a shootout.
Also, St. Raymond’s topped Cardinal Hayes 84-79.
Nancy Haggery was also on hand to watch another undefeated fall as North Rockland lost at home to Spring Valley 57-45.
As if that wasn’t enough, we also had more game winners. Sleepy Hollow’s Nick Arduino hit one with two seconds left to give the Headless Horseman the win over Woodlands.
There was one place where the favorite played their part. Mount Vernon manhandled Scarsdale, cruising to a 74-44 win in its home opener. I’ll be back later with a recap of the game.
Until then, here are today’s roundups.

dobbs over irvington by 4 or 5
Watched stepinac vs. mount game tonite. Got 2 games for the price of 1! Stepinac vs mount & stepinac vs stepinac. They lost game due to selfishness. Team needs to pass more & coach needs to use his bench better. Don’t know y #12 doesn’t play more….seen him before….great shooter & has great court sense
Harrison lost by 11 to Byram hills at Byram Hills on a Friday night game. I think you could say Harrison beating Fox Lane and sticking with BH that they could bite you in the butt if you come out flat. Great effort Huskies
bounce back Huskies and beat Rye
Not that anyone can feel sorry for Hayes but that man from DR who is playing for St. Rays must be at least 20. The CHSAA is really out of control.
Rotten tomato were you at byram / Harrison game? Byram lead by 20 most of game!
Coach Repa put subs in with more than 5 minutes to go in game. Harrison coach decided to press to try to get back in game. Byram could have won by 30
another good win for the mount in a down year.
PANAS PLAYED ANOTHER STRONG GAME,KEEP IT UP FELLAS,TIME TO START GETTING IN POSITION FOR A GOOD SEED COME PLAYOFF TIME
Byram #1 fan what is Byrum’s next tough challenge? Do they play Pok, Peekskill, Mahopac, New Ro, TZ anyone?

NO I was not at the game. Its sad that lohud had no coverage or tweets so fans/bloggersw could see what was going on. It sounds like BH bounced back from a loss and flexed their muscles.. Harrison walked into a hornets nest.
Pville bounces back after giving up 20pt lead in the 3rd to Croton at home. One of the worse losses for a non-playoff game. I believe that loss might be a big positive for the struggling Panthers. Maybe they will start playing to their potential. Scoring 73 vs Westlake was a good start. Based on their poor play Pville will be a low seed(Between 7-9)and a team I believe you dont want to play.
Byram Hills is every bit as good as their reputation. Any one of the 5 starters can beat you, beautiful ball movement and sharing and tough defense. Huskies were just spent after 2 hard fought victories. It was actually the Harrison Coach who cleared his bench in the 3rd qtr… and their subs did a nice job press BH’s subs to make it respectable.
Hats off to BH, hard not to see them as the odds on favorite for the Class A Gold Ball
Mount did great job in second half and yes timmy got out coached.. i dont know who keeps saying #12 should get more run? But whom shall he play over? James or Thomas? The kis is ok..he is small and ifa taller guard is on him he will struggle to shoot. He is also not that quick. He is a pass first but does that make him ” smart”? Dont get them comments?
Only thing that makes Steps second half flop funny is Iona Perps WHOLE flop to Fordham Prep. If Fordham and Somers could schedule Iona once a week they would both be at the top of their conferences. Next Friday @ Stepinac should be a nice easy one..isiah ice should have transfered i bet he will now..
Outcoached, please. If the Mount guys could coach they would do better than 6-15 from the foul line. Players win and lose games.
Congrats
Mount st Michaels!... Great victory!...reality check!!..... Total domination by Mount!!..
PPR,
If Mount’s last second win over Stepinac by 2pts is ‘total domination’...what do you call Stepinac’s 10pt win over New Ro – ‘nuclear holocaust’?
If Stepinac had Mounts Coach they would have won!!
And if iona had chaminades football coach they wouldve won.
Coach at Mount far superior!
I agree
Nonsense. Players win and lose games. These comments surely come from people who have never coached.
Coach piggot outcoached coach quirola
Coach fraher outcoached coach philp
Coach lopes outcoached coach lods
Coach philp outcoached coach curran
Coach quirola outcoached coach fraher

Coach quirola outcoached coach mayfield
Tam: you are wrong it has nothing to do with the players its all coaching!!!!!! Lol jkidding
I have to agree with CHSAA.
A few D1 coaches are looking to add Tom F. to their staff. TAM & Year of the Coach are two bloggers that us coaches call Wannabe’s.
NCAA, This “wannabe” knows you can’t win without players. Boy does Mount miss Maestre and Gill. Now back to Downton Abbey.

HOOPS… MOUNT DOMINATED!.. THATS ALL TO IT!!... YOU GOT LUCKY NEW RO FOOTBALL PLAYERS WHERE NOT IN BASKETBALL MODE!!....
LIKE I SAID CONGRATS TO MOUNT FOR LEAVING THERE FOOT PRINT IN YOUR ….......
You win shake hands and count yourself fortunate. You lose shake hands and try to do better. That’s high school hoops at its best.
PPR,
You know less about basketball than I thought. Everytime you drive by Wilmot Road you should “duck” just to keep things consistent.
Word on the streets is that iona reached out to new ro to schedule a football game for next season and new ro said no. Any iona fans havee any info/truth to that?
I would imagine iona wouldnt duck a team like new ro when just a couple of years ago iona played bergen catholic, a football program that is a million times better then new ro.
word,
Thats not just the word on the street, but its been the word all over this blog and other places as well. Even New Ro fans like Just a Fact confirm it. Its too bad for all local football fans because it could be one of the top 3 matchups/rivalries in Westchester every year.
word on the street
Iona agreed to play New Rochelle- The New Rochelle coach declined to play – Prince a la Joe E is in denial and is resorting to calling me , Hoops Fan and Iona Power liars. That is what you would expect from a low life bottom dweller.
