The best way I can describe the significance of Panas’ 75-66 win over Peekskill is this:
The last time the Panthers beat the Red Devils, many of the players weren’t even born.
It’s been 18 years since Panas last defeated Peekskill, a victory that came during Elton Brands’ senior year, according to Panas coach Shawn Sullivan.
After years of falling short, the Panthers were finally able to put together a complete game and come away with their first victory against the Red Devils in almost two decades.
Sullivan said the motivation for the game came from Panas’ heartbreaking 70-67 double-overtime loss to Nyack on Friday. The Panthers have lost five games by a total of 11 points this season.
Vaughn Dweck came up huge early for Panas, scoring 27 of his 31 points in the first half. He also finished with 12 rebounds and five assists.
Tim McCauley would bring it home for the Panthers as all 18 of his points came in the second half. Lylle Ryals added 13 points and eight rebounds.
As for whether the win could turn around the Panthers (4-5) season:
“As long as they don’t get big heads from it,” Sullivan said.
On the opposite side of the spectrum Byram Hills lost for the first time this season. The Bobcats fell to undefeated Linden 64-57.
Byram Hills was able to stay within striking distance throughout the game and took a five point lead with three minutes to go. However, after Ryan Golden was taken out after picking up his third foul the Tigers went on a run to take a 50-44 lead heading into the fourth.
Golden would finish with 12 points. Brian Skelly led Byram Hills with 20 points. Andrew Groll had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Linden was led by Quadri Moore who finished with 19 points. The 6-foot-10 junior has already received scholarship offers from Georgetown and Cincinnati.
Today’s roundups:
Panas 75, Peekskill 66: At Peekskill, Vaughn Dweck had 31 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in the Panthers first win over the Red Devils in 18 years. Tim McCauley had 18 points and six assists. Linden 64, Byram Hills 57: At Linden, Brian Skelly had 20 points in the Bobcats first loss of the season. Ryan Golden had 12 points. Andrew Groll had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Linden was led by 6-foot-10 junior Quadri Moore who finished with 19 points for the undefeated Tigers.
Cardinal Hayes 81, Iona Prep 71: At Iona Prep, Isiah Ice scored 24 points and had six assists for the Gaels. Brandon Williams had 22 points and five rebounds and Tom Capuano scored 16 points.
Kennedy 61, Lakeland 48: At Lakeland, Sean Delaney had 19 points for the Gaels. Dominick Cristiano added 17 points. Mike Morelli had 10 points for the Hornets.

Great, great win for PANAS a team that. Has been through some tough loses, has now over come,CONGRATS
This should boost panas’ seed In the section
Soph Sean Delaney with 19 tonight for Kennedy. Nice!
Iona Perp played Hayes tough.
Haywood I’m actually a student at panas and I never seen a team so happy
Really like the way delaney plays… Tall smooth and always under control and has nice range. Going to be a nice player in the future.
JAMES,
THANKS FOR THE UPDATES,CLASS A IS TOUGH,BUT IT’S MAKING PANAS BETTER,THAT DYNAMIC DUO OF TIMMY AND VAUGHN,CAN GO ALONG WAY AS LONG AS SOME OTHER PLAYERS STEP UP,I AM PROUD OF THIS TEAM.
MY FAVORITE TEAMS;
MOUNT VERNON
POUGHKEEPSIE
PANAS
Iona played Hayes very tough. Loughlin beat Cross last night 73-71.
Good effort for Iona to cut a big lead and make it a game.
Byram Hills Steps up in class vs tough Linden team. Big Kid there is a beast That should help them down the line. What happened to Lynch was he hurt again ?
Brand’s senior year was 1997—so call that 16 years. Panas won Class B that year.
Poughkeepsie beat Peekskill in the Semi’s (after losing the 2 regular season games by 25+). Brand was 6 of 18 from the line that game, his last HS game. Was still USA Today HS player of the year.
And then Poughkeepsie had a let down game against Panas in the finals, Panas was the better team that day
Pk King,
Too many let down games up here. That seems to be changing though. The staff up there now seems to do a nice job of getting the guys up for every game.
The hack a Elton gameplan worked out, lol. Wasn’t Big June [Charles Spencer] on that squad?
Left the game when hayes led 38-16. Looks like iona relied on a ton of 3s
Hayes big man mustapha did not play. Givin up 80 points is way to much.
westchester,
80pts is a lot, but when you’re playing against a very good team with excellent guards that plays up tempo basketball it is understandable. Iona isn’t a defensive-stopper type of team this year, but they play hard on D as most of Quirolo’s teams have done. Impressive that Williams, Ice and Capuano played as well as they did vs Hayes’ guards.
I noticed Matt Ryan had a quiet game- Iona will have a tough time winning when he does not score over 20 points- Lots of pressure for a sophomore playing in the CHSAA AA.
IP,
I didn’t see the game, but I heard he got in foul trouble early. I agree lots of importance on Ryan performing well for Iona, but if Williams, Ice and Capuano are combining for 60pts, Iona will be a tough out. All three of those guys are playing better than I expected this year – Ice, Williams and Capuano – good for them.
Lynch played throughout, kept setting up Skelly. Groll didn’t back down against the big center.

Stepinac is having a great year- Good chance they make the semifinals at St. Johns- Iona has done well in their first year in the CHSAA AA considering they lost a few players to transfers-
On a football note it will be interesting to see how Iona and Stepinac fill out their non league schedule-
IP,
I’m happy with how Stepinac’s season is going so far. But there is a lot of basketball left to be played. Loughlin and CTK will be tough games to win. Games against Mount 2x, St Rays 2x, Iona, Xaverian will all not be easy and could go either way. St Rays games particularly will be interesting with how Step handles St Rays 6’8” soph Santos.
Where did the transfers you mentioned from Iona go?
I’m interested to hear how Iona and Stepinac fill up their two non-league games. Its exciting that the CHSFL teams get the extra open date – the issue is that most of the obvious choices – New Ro, No Rock, PSAL, LI publics are severely limited or completely restricted in scheduling non-league games. One game against MW or NFA would be good for Iona or Step, but it would be great if they could get another high profile regional game. The NJ catholics went down to play some of the Baltimore/DC catholics last year. CHSFL teams could try the same. CHSFL teams are at a big disadvantage scheduling week 1 games against teams that start weeks earlier as they do in some other areas.
6’10 Iona Prep Sophmore was Stolen by Scanlon!!! AAU coach got the job at Scanlon and scooped him up. If he was in the middle that would equate to a few more victories.
BBX
The 2 transfers to Scanlon.6’8 and 6’10 are VERY raw..not sure they would have fit or really made a difference THIS year, but the nucleus Vic is building is impressive and by the time they were seniors, they would have been a legit threat in CHSSA..
and CHSSA Schools would never recruit ! LOL

Iona lost a 6’8’’ soph center to Scanlan- Also lost a jr guard who is playing very well at Spellman.
Football wise I will leave that one alone for now but in talking to people who are involved with the program they were very disappointed in one particular non league game that was set to go and be televised by MSG fell through as the opponents coach declined to play- I would rather not say who the team was as I was not directly involved in those discussions.
PKking is right. It wasn’t 18 years ago and I don’t think that Panas beat Peekskill that year either. I believe all of Peekskill’s losses that year besides the Poughkeepsie “Hack a Elton” game at the County Center came in the Great Florida Shootout in Orlando, and the 5th 3rd Bank Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. Panas went on to the State Finals that year and lost to Westhill. Elton was on hand to pick up the NYS Mr. Basketball Award. Peekskill also beat Marist High School and James Felton (RIP) of New Jersey in the Nike Super 6 at MSG that year. I think Sullivan is definitely wrong about the year. If I remember correctly, Panas did beat Peekskill one or two years before that when Peekskill won 1 of their back to back State Titles, but not Elton’s Senior Year. Panas was led by Shawn Tarkington back then who was actually a Peekskill kid (went to the same Elementary school as Elton and they were good friends).
All this talk about recruiting. Stealing players ..AAU coaches steering players to certain schools ..getting jobs for doing it ..lol..private schools don’t have an advantage ???..please just admit it and move on ..stop comparing..how can you compare a Somers with iona ..its unbelievable that they competed let alone won ..let the attack begin!!
IP, OldHead and BBX,
How did the transfer to Spellman play immediately? Is the 6’8” kid playing for Scanlan? this year?
Bawler,
You know absolutely nothing about the CHSAA and its schools. Why don’t you focus on something you know about – Mahopac – and stop commenting on things you know nothing about.
Iona and stepinac both have some good young talent but so does….Hayes, rays, ctk, loughlin, Molly, holy cross. Molly rays and Hayes freshmen teams are very very good, especially cardinal Hayes

Dont know anything about the Iona transfer at Spellmon. Saw Spellmon play and cant remember one kid that stood out as someone who would have really helped Iona this year.
the Scanlon kids are Johnathan Nwankwo is the 6”10 and Emmanuel Chukwu is the 6”8. Chukwu’s brother Pascal is 7’1 top 5 center in Connecticut at Fairfield Prep. I have not heard anything on their performance or Scanlon’s but, in this case in particular Bawler is 100% correct.
Bawler:
Randy stevens left ossining for mvernon
Ralph watts left lakeland for peekskill
Mike demello left kennedy for wplains
All transfers that were allowed to play immediately
So no recruiting going on in sect 1?
Stop with the whining bc it goes on all over.
In 97 Peekskill was undefeated in the league, and Poughkeepsie and Panas each had 3 loses, 2 to Peekskill and splitting against each other.
States, June da Moon was not on the 97 team—he was a Freshman that year. Desham did come up for sectionals.
The big men who fouled Elton were Trevor Hessen, Mo Gary, and I believe the third was still Peter Johnson. Mo Carlton was the leading scorer on that team. All those mentioned were state champs in 95.
Here was a quote in the NYTimes from that game:
As a senior at Peekskill High School in 1997, Brand was the reason Panzanaro’s team was favored to win a third consecutive state title, until upset by Poughkeepsie before making it out of its section.
‘’That was a team we had beaten by 20 twice during the season,’’ Panzanaro said. ‘’They mauled Elton in that playoff game, absolutely mauled him. He shot 6 of 18 from the line and it was the worst game of his career. We had kids crying, falling on the floor. But the first person in line to shake hands was Elton. I can still see the smile on his face.’‘
PK King,
Thanks for the info. Def appreciate the history lesson. I still see Desham from time to time. Love the man, one of the most down to earth, humble brothers you’ll ever meet. He still gets at me for giving up on ball to focus on Football sometimes, lol.
