Basketball doesn’t return full tilt until Thursday, but there were three games today.
Iona Prep hosted its rematch with St. Ray’s after beating the Ravens in their gym last month. This time, the Gaels led throughout before squandering a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter despite some scorching hot shooting from sophomore Matt Ryan.
Iona has now squandered leads of 16, 15 and nine points in the fourth quarter of its last three games, although it did rebound to beat New Rochelle in overtime in one of those. The young Gaels will get there, but they’re still learning how to close out wins.
Here are tonight’s recaps:
St. Raymond 76, Iona Prep 71: At Iona Prep, Matt Ryan had 27 points for the Gaels, who led by nine points with 5:56 to play. Tom Capuano had five assists. Brandon Williams had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Tappan Zee 62, Yorktown 39: At Tappan Zee, Luke McLaughlin had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Dutchmen. Brendan Hauser had 15 points and eight rebounds. Ricky Corrado had 12 points for the Huskers.
Cardinal Spellman 59, Harrison 50: At Harrison, Coby Lefkowitz had 23 points and eight rebounds for Harrison. Nick Pipitone had seven points and six assists.
