Nothing like a couple of nail biters to kick-off the first full day of games after the holiday break.
White Plains can not catch a break. You honestly have to feel for the Tigers. I saw them play Nazareth and Iona Prep, two games they led heading into the fourth quarter. This time around White Plains held the lead late into the fourth until a costly turnover led to a four-point swing with just over two minutes remaining in the game.
Just 12 miles south, the Pelicans were forming a comeback of their own. Trailing by seven heading into the fourth, Pelham forced the Yellow Jackets into several turnovers to claw their way back. Pat Condy hit two 3s in the last minute of regulation to send the game to overtime. In the extra stanza the Pelicans got it done at the line, hitting three free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
It feels good to back.

What is WP’s record? I can’t keep up. t this pace they might not even get a chance to play in Sectionals. Curse of DeMello??
The Tigers are 2-5. Things don’t get easier as they face Mahopac Saturday in the Putnam Challenge at Brewster.
Dan,
Yonkers hoops is very thin to be nice. Lincoln,Gorton, Yonkers High, Yonkers Mont. are very very thin. Is the talent pool this bad? Roosevelt, Pal Prep, and Riverside are not much better. Saunders is the cream of the citys crop and they are good at times at best. What is going on? Must the city have 7 bad varsity teams? Why can’t they make one really good team..it is something that needs investigating.
I don’t disagree with you,but don’t forget about all the kids that are on varsity now that wouldn’t make it if there was only team.I think that is the reason why they don’t
On NY Sportwriters blog it says that schools in Buffalo are going to merge next years for football. 3
schools for each team. That way they would be competitive. Maybe Yonkers should check out that model.
Article:
Downsizing ahead? McKinley, Bennett and South Park would be among schools losing their football identity under a proposal to consolidate the Buffalo Public Schools’ football teams into four grid squads next fall, The Buffalo News reported.
District officials cited declining participation as the reason for the proposed changes. In August 2010, 535 athletes participated on eight teams. This year, that dwindled to 428 players at Bennett, Burgard, McKinley, Riverside, East, South Park, International Prep and Hutch Tech.
“I think we need to downsize our football program and make our teams more competitive,” Athletic Director Aubrey T. Lloyd III told the school board Wednesday. The board could vote to accept the plan next week in the face of expected protests.
“Winning solves a lot of problems, folks,” board member John B. Licata said, a reference to the likelihood that consolidated teams would be stronger teams.
Under the plan, each new team would be composed of players from three or more city schools:
North: Bennett, Burgard, Olmsted, and Math, Science and Technology Prep.
West: Riverside, McKinley and Lafayette.
East: City Honors, East, Performing Arts, International Prep, da Vinci and the Academy School.

South: South Park, Hutch Tech, Emerson and Middle Early College.
Lloyd also wants to give schools the ability to more easily hire qualified non-teachers as coaches to improve the quality of instruction in some cases. Under the Buffalo Teachers Federation contract, the district has to hire teachers for the positions.
Yonkers is a city more than twice the size of Mount Vernon’s population. If Yonkers ever put one team forward from all the HS kids, including all the ones they lose to the Catholic schools every year, they would have more state championships than Mount Vernon HS. No doubt about that. But it will never happen, for many reasons.
Did anyone go to the Slam Dunk last week? Were the crowds way down this year from recent seasons or was I just thinking they were much bigger crowds in the last 6 or 7 years? I do not recall the county center that empty for the boys games in my memory.
When budget cuts remove Modified, Freshman and JV teams and leave only Varsity teams what you have is what you see in the city of Yonkers. Talented players will eventually leave for better programs. Coaches will be forced to have 15-20 players on varsity making practice very difficult as the coach tries his or her best to develop a practice plan that helps the underclassman develop. Ninth graders and seniors do not blend well, socially or physically. What a mess.
I was a All- County player for Roosevelt in 1976… we had 6 out of the 20 players selected that year from Yonkers..( 3 Gorton) , ( 2 Yonkers ) ( 1 Roosevelt ) . Gorton won class A , Yonkers AA…now it’s a mess.. what a shame
Heathcliff,
Did you go to the County Center? Because if you didn’t you missed some great basketball. Better than the team you root for, most likely.
@ siv wht up
Dan,
Palisade Prep has a chance to Win Class C
Saunders and Riverside are both top half Class A Schools
Gorton is a .500 Class A School
YMA has no Senior Class yet, so you cant judge them.
I think Yonkers Schools are doing okay…..........
oops Step Fan
Gorton 76.. hey there… Yonkers schools what a mess.. need to bring back the old coaches…Volpe..Flower..Cierro..Joyce.. ( lol )..kids wanted to please for those coaches…the schools now have better players walking the halls than on the court…
Everyone,
Bringing together all the Yonkers’ schools is an interesting concept, but I think you all are overlooking a huge point.
Who said the kids would want too?
As aces wild pointed out, making a “super team” would mean that several kids who are currently playing varsity wouldn’t be able to play. As someone that grew up in Dutchess, I can guarantee you that if you asked the kids at John Jay-East Fishkill and Ketcham (both in Wappingers school district) if they would like to combine their (football, basketball, soccer, baseball) team to give them a better chance of winning they would say no.
How much criticism did LeBron James take for joining his buddies down in South Beach and taking the easy way out? I’d like to think the boys in Yonkers would want to continue to represent their individual schools as opposed to combining them.

Dan.. then maybe make 2 or 3 teams…not 1 combined… it’s rare a Yonkers team is even competitive once they play outside the City… and it’s not just in Basketball.. it’s every sport.. they get killed.. most games are complete blowouts.. not fun to watch.. cant be fun to play in.. going into aqlmost every game knowing you have NO SHOT at winning…I know it’s Basketball time… but needed to say this.. with all going on in Yonkers.. it sure does make the job Mike Meade did at Roosevelt a few years back.. winning the section class A title in football.. the coaching job of the century !!!
The schools need to provide a better learning..winning and recruiting environment to attract them to stay and not get picked off one by one from the private schools ..as far as the LeBron comment..by jumping ship to play with other players who jumped ship to go to a better school and win .. its the same thing
Exactly…have more than one team..but have one competitive one at least..if you eliminate the 9 varsity teams you could have 4 say and 4jv ..be able to build something. Most of these varsity players havevno business or skills being on a basketball court. I watched Lincoln and it was badbasketball with little coaching. Also since when did Yonkers care if the kids want to or not.
Bawler the Yonkers schools lose student athletes because catholic schools give them a chance to succeed. Them Yonkers teachers don’t care about the students or the athletes. All they care about is te 130grand they make..they are the true thieves
Lets look at the 8 Yonkers Schools—-
Palisade Prep- Undefeated & Might be the Favorite to win Class C Title
Saunders- A top 1/2 team in Class A, could make a run to County Center
Riverside- A top 1/2 team in Class A, getting to County Center wouldnt surprise me
Gorton- Decent .500 Class A team, won the Sleepy Tournament
Roosevelt- Decent .500 Class A Team
Lincoln- Way down this year
Yonkers- Very young, will be decent next yeat
YMA- School doesnt have a Senior Class, playing with grades 9, 10, 11
SO please stop knocking the Yonkers Programs
WOW… thats my reaction to your comments….Roos , Gorton , Lincoln , Yonkers and YMA.. are not decent.. they are just not good clubs. at this time…...Saunders a top 1/2 in class A.. not a chance… Riverside..is the best team in the City.. a 500 club in class A. by yrs end . but can pull some upsets.. both of them will def not make the CC…. class C weak so PP may do some damage…so again..please tell me how Im knocking the Yonkers schools…just stating the facts…and im from Yonkers.. and would love for all this to be turned around .
