The between-season crunch prevented me from posting my preseason rankings, so these are a week or so late. Of course, that’s given me a bit of an idea where teams should fall so far. For example, Peekskill and Clarkstown South have written some pretty definitive statements already. I’m paraphrasing, but they read: “We are still good.”
We won’t know how this will shake out for a while, but since when was waiting fun. So… Here’s a look at the final rankings from last season. Now, let’s move on to the first set from 2012-13:
THE TOP 10
1. MOUNT VERNON (0-0) - The Knights tip-off on Thursday in Edmonton for three games. The box scores will be interesting. It’s rare to see a Mount Vernon team lose so much scoring in one offseason. Even the 2009-10 team Bob Cimmino has compared this one to brought back Jabarie Hinds.
2. STEPINAC (4-0) - The Crusaders are off to a strong start, which should go a long way toward building their confidence for a brutal league slate. The backcourt is fast and loaded, but can they compete up front?
3. NEW ROCHELLE (1-0) - Good, solid, season-opening win over Harborfields, even if the reigning Class A state champ is a far cry from its team of the last three seasons.
4. NORTH ROCKLAND (3-0) - Another day Monday, another coach raving to me about North Rockland. The Red Raiders appear to be back as a County Center contender.
5. BYRAM HILLS (2-0) - The Bobcats have a lot of the essentials: Good guard play, good size, excellent coaching and shooting and toughness in abundance. I still don’t know if I’d tab them as the favorite over Poughkeepsie, but it’s a long way until March.
6. PEEKSKILL (1-0) - Call me lucky. I’m not sure the Red Devils would’ve fallen into my original Top 10. Now, they soar about my expected Class A champ with a significant, impressive win to open the season. Peekskill sure can reload.
7. POUGHKEEPSIE (0-1) - So I had rankings set in my head last week and didn’t have time to post them. Suffice it to say, Poughkeepsie was higher in them. I’ve dropped the Pioneers based on Saturday’s loss, but expect them to climb once they return to full strength and figure out their chemistry. This is still the most talented team in A.
8. IONA PREP (2-1) - The Gaels are young. They are a completely new team. But, yes, they are talented. The sophomores Matt Ryan and Tom Capuano should make for a great trio with junior Isiah Ice. But how long will it take? And can they survive a league schedule that will make last season’s look like JVish by comparison?
9. WHITE PLAINS (0-0) - The backcourt should be very strong, especially with the addition of Mike DeMello. The key might be with Nate Hudson and Robby Lorden in the paint. The Tigers’ lacked toughness and rebounding last season. They should be better.
10. CLARKSTOWN SOUTH (3-0) - Like Peekskill, I don’t know that I expect such a strong start by South. Mike McCahey was so much the heart and soul of last year’s team, but a returning group led by Joe Zayer has been terrific. Saturday’s double-digit win over Pearl River was very impressive.
Below are my Rockland, Small School, and Class rankings. They will start off as Top 5s but will expand later in the season.

Josh,
one glaring omission. In Class C/D you forgot Palisade Prep who killed Keio and won the Keio tournament where Hamilton finished 4th. To put Keio and Hamilton in the top 5 and no Palisade is a mistake. It happens. Keep up the good work.
Is Spring Valley Class A? Than they should be ranked in Class A, as you rank tham ahead of TZ and PR in the Rockland rankings.
Lion,
SV moved up to AA this year
Surprised about the omission of Mahopac. Not a huge supporter, but results speak for themselves.
Does any know how so many schools changed classes? If Long Island Lutheran is in AA, do they get a Federation spot, because I don’t remember any AIS schools playing in AA.
A. Francis,
I think Pac got taken down b/c of the loss to Arlington. A better team then people give them credit for, just need better program management.
If Spring Valley beat TZ, shouldn’t they be ahead of TZ in the Class A rankings?
STATESMAN,
CAN I GET A SCORE?
KNICKS VS NETS TONIGHT
8 Ball, see sports guys note.
Wood,
100-94 NYK.
I’m happy Pac dropped…kids needed kick in the pants ..a lot of talent come playoff time..greely tomorrow..Kingston Saturday…we will see
MAHOPAC WILL BE AT COUNTY CENTER
Harrison not in the Top 10 LOL , Today the Coaches of Section 1 Football are meeting today at Somers 3pm to discuss and fix the 3 games in 11 days scenario
Haywood:
I agree ..don’t understand byram so high ..we destroyed them in a scrimmage…pok was tough and I think we beat them but I like flying low
Rotten
They can meet and discuss all they want, but they aren’t going to fix anything. They have ZERO say in the 3 games scenario. Its all the super’s, and Jen “i hate football” Simmons.
what about greeley they have 3 players that play for 4 years varsity , they should be good
bball… You’re right. Interesting game tomorrow between Greeley and Mahopac. We will be at the game.
Pac boys been playing against those 3 since they were 10 …good players
@section 1 – its a start. Maybe they will march to her office
MAHOPAC-68 GREELEY-59
Like it wood !
Kingston is an important test for Mahopac. Kingstons pg Justin Robinson has interests from Binghamton. Kingston beat a solid Baldwin (LI) team in the Upstate/Downstate Classic. If Mahopac can hang with Kingston, I think they’ll have a solid season.
Not familiar with them ..big?..fast ?
BAWLER,
KINGSTON IS IN SECTION 9,THEY ALWAYS HAVE GOOD ATHLETES,PAC BETTER COME HARD
HAYWOOD

I’ll let you hold a gold ball, but that’s it,dust off the one you got in 2005,Lllooolll
Bawler,
So two years ago Tappan Zee destroyed Byram in a scrimmage by over 40 and look what happened at the end of the year. Plus Lynch was only days into his return and had no explosiveness. You may be right about POK, but there’s plenty of evidence that Byram is significantly tougher in the regular and post-seasons than in scrimmages.
Sorry ..just wasn’t impressed..our center and 2nd best player missed all of last season and still isn’t 100% from a torn Achilles..scrimmaged byram last yr ..they seemed much tougher then
The center bawler is referring to is mike simone. Haven’t heard the name? You will come February
rocket,
Great point about Mahopac hanging with Kingston but you have to keep in mind that Baldwin was short handed and didn’t have their whole squad. Yet Bladwin still kept it close. Kingston jumped out quick but let them back in. They tend to play sloppy. Yes its early, but a lot needs to be fixed if they are going anywhere.
With that being said still a nice test for Mahopac in terms of athleticism and speed match ups.
Agreed that Byram should be atop the Class A polls. Still think they are being underestimated. PK is talented but not the most talented. I think they do have the most athleticism, though. Team could run. Peekskill is only going to get better. I don’t see TZ being a huge threat considering who’ve they lost but if Letizia and younger McLaughlin step it up, one will not want to run into them come February. Definitely a bigger gap between the talent of teams this year in A. I look forward to seeing some Dark Knights.
For the football, if they can’t start the season a week earlier, play 3 in 11 during the middle of the season or space out the game during the regular, some Friday-Monday games?
Meant Friday- tuesday
Wood,
Didn’t cover the Knicks/Nets spread but I was close. Give ot to your young boy—he knows hoops!!!
100-94 to actual 100-97
STATESMAN,
AMEN, TO THAT,LLLLLLOOOOOLLLLL
“KNICKS BABY”
All day !!!
Impressive, Statesman.
Thank you wise one, just trying to get to your level.
RCDS in top 5 ? Lost Staubi and Gendelman who were heart and soul. Lost to a weak private school by 20 in opener…Fernandez can really play but at 5’8 cant do it alone, much as he’ll try. Someone gotta put an eye test to these teams not on reputation and name on the jersey
Same thing with White Plains in Top 10 without playing a game.. De mello is a nice player for sure, and pops is a great coach but a program changer in AA ? not so sure…
Hey Sports Guy, do you know if the Pearl River Christmas Tournament got cancelled?
Pearl River tournament was canceled. Nyack had to withdraw. TZ and PR will play on Tuesday night at 7.
That’s too bad, always a great tourney. Thanks for the info
Didn’t know..that was always a good tourney..albertus wasn’t playing in it this year anyway
why did nyack withdraw from the tourney josh?
Nyack had double-booked a game or games. I’m not sure if it was just one or if it was multiple game.
You can only play 18 regular season games. If you play more, you get thrown out of the postseason.
