CLASS AA —
ARLINGTON ADMIRALS
Coach: Matt Hoyt (11th year)
Last season’s record: 14-6
Playoffs: Lost to Mahopac in 2 OTs in quarterfinals
Key returners: Ericco Feaster, Gio Rodriguez, Will Kurdziel, Jay Leigh, Alex Starzyk, Mike Duffy, David Verdis, Kyle Espejo, Kyle Flanagan.
Newcomers: Brandon Tobin, Frank Cenname, Ryan Porter, Tyler Muldoon, Joe DeRosa, Brendan Sunday.
Coach’s notes: “We graduated three of our top four scorers from a year ago. We are trying to get better each and every day. If we continue to work hard we feel that we can have a good year. With only five home games we will have to learn to win on the road and play together. It is a great group of guys and they are fun to be around each night.”
CARMEL RAMS
Coach: George Coates (5th season)
Last season’s record: 14-6
Playoffs: Lost in quarterfinals
Key returners: Dan Behnken, Sr., F; R.J. Martinez, Jr., G; Ray Dorritie Jr., C; Ryan Dougherty, Sr., G; J.J. O’Connor, Sr., F; Ryan Mordecai, Sr., F; George Hartshorn, Sr., F; Devon Rugova, Sr., G
Newcomers: James Loughran, Jr., G; Joe Ross, Jr., G; John Niebhur, Jr., C, Jack Cody, Jr., G; Jack Haughney, Jr. F
Coach’s notes: “Our goal is to be competitive on a nightly basis. The team is working very hard and is excited to begin the 2012-13 campaign.”
CLARKSTOWN NORTH RAMS
Coach: Dan Goldberg
Last season’s record: 7-12
Playoffs: Lost to Mount Vernon in the first round
Key returners: Zac Jarrett (5-10), Sr., G; Vinny Lleshaj (6-0), Sr., F; Brendan Hendrickson (6-2), Sr., F; Chris Boddy (6-0), Sr., F; Connor Coppola (5-9), Sr., G; Sal Barbetto (5-8), Jr., G; Stav Gershonovitz (6-3), Jr., F.
Newcomers: Matt McMullen (5-8), Jr., G; E.J. Smith (5-11), So., G; Zach Silverman (6-3), Jr., F; Jeremy Becker (5-10), Jr., G.
Coach’s notes: “With four three-year varsity players on the roster (three of which are three-year starters) and nine returning players, we have a deep and experienced team. The past two seasons we have won a play-in game only to run in to the No. 1 overall seed in the first round. Our goal this year is to avoid the play-in round and advance in the playoffs. Jarrett and Lleshaj were voted as all-league players last year and will be relied heavily upon this year. However, there are also about five other players on our team this year who are more than capable of having big offensive nights. If we are able to create havoc defensively and limit our turnovers on offense, we could be in for a very successful season.”
CLARKSTOWN SOUTH VIKINGS
Coach: Matt Backs (3rd season)
Last season’s record: 16-5
Playoffs: Lost to Mount Vernon in semifinals
Key returners: Tyler Mager (6-1), Sr., G/F; Thomas Gerlich (6-2), Sr., F; Blake Sanders (6-4), Sr., F; Conor McGuinness (5-8), So., G; Joe Zayer (5-10), Jr., G; Kevin Martinez (6-0), Jr., G/F; Kyle Beckmann (6-3), Jr., G/F.
Newcomers: Steven Collamore (6-0), Jr., F; Justin Rivera (6-2), So., G/F; Dan O’Sullivan (6-4), So., G; Andrew Bunyan (5-9), Fr., G.
Coach’s notes: “At South, we are in a year of transition from a group of players who were three and four-year starters to a group of players who have been around but never been in the spotlight in high school. Practices have been very competitive and this group has the desire to learn and be successful at the levels of their predecessors. These players love to practice and compete and are another group that is fun to coach. Despite the talent that we graduated, we have a large group of players on this team that have a chance to be very good players individually on a very unselfish team. Our goal is to get better every day with the understanding that we have to compete at the highest level every night to be successful on the level that we have been at in the past. Up to this point, the players, Tyler, Thomas, Joe and Conor, have embraced this challenge and are making strides quickly.”
FOX LANE FOXES
Coach: Chris Violante (9th season)
Last season’s record: 17-4
Playoffs: Lost in semifinals at County Center
Key returners: James Morales (6-1), Jr., G; Carlito Carvalho (6-1), Sr., G ; Tommy Palmerton (6-3), Jr., F; Will Quaranta (6-0), Sr., F; Emmett Blau (5-10), Sr., G.
Key newcomers: Nicholas Bonura (5-9), Jr., G; Will Paul (6-1), Jr., G; Owen Azrak (5-9), So., G; Andrew Redhead (6-1), Jr., F; Jordan Pasetsky (6-1), Jr., F.
Coach’s notes: “The Foxes lost all five starters from last year’s 17-4 team. Will Trawick (Emory University) and Dylan Peretz (University of Rochester) are going to be difficult to replace. We are very young as we only have three seniors and collectively lack varsity game time experience. Morales and Carvalho were the sixth and seventh men on last year’s team, so a lot of leadership and scoring will fall on their shoulders. This team is very deep which should make practices competitive as they fight for minutes. To have a successful season, we will need to really heavily on team defense and taking care of the basketball.”
HORACE GREELEY QUAKERS
Coach: Dave Fernandes (20th season)
Last season’s record: 9-10
Playoffs: Lost in first round
Key returners: Harrison Brown (6-4), Sr., F; Matt Xie (6-4), Sr., F; Teddy Graves (6-2), Sr., G; Ryan Lubarsky (5-11), Sr., F; Jeremy Ciero (6-2), Sr., G; Greg Handler (6-2), Sr. F; Derek Freyberg (6-3), Sr., F.
Newcomers: Cameron Ciero (5-11), So., G; Adam Quine (6-4), So., F; Oliver Harris (5-11), So., F; Jason Neff (6-2), So., G; Jason Meshberg (5-10), So., G; Brandon Okun (6-0), Jr., G; Brett Rothberg (6-3), Jr., F; Noah Siff (5-11), Jr., G.
Coach’s notes: “Our main focus will be defense and team play. Harrison Brown has worked really hard in the offseason. Matt Xie and Teddy Graves will be in their fourth year as varsity players. Those three, along with Ryan Lubarsky, will be our leaders and captains. We have a strong group of seniors and very talented group of newcomers. We must play defense for four quarters. Offensively we must play together. Our tough defense will lead to transition baskets.”
JOHN JAY-EAST FISHKILL PATRIOTS

Playoffs: Lost in first round
Key Returners: Jon Joseph (6-6), Sr., C; Tyler Kardas (6-3), Sr., F; Brandon Schneider (6-0), Sr., G; Brenden DelBiondo (5-10), Jr., G; Ryan Pergolizzi (6-2), Jr., F
Newcomers: Vic Terry (5-4), Sr., G; Dimitrios Tsesmetzis (6-4), Jr., C
Coach’s notes: “We are working hard to have a successful season. We have a nice core group coming back that is eager to improve on last season. Our practices have been spirited and competitive which should lead us to success going forward.”
KENNEDY GAELS
Coach: Al Morales (1st season)
Last season’s record: 14-6
Playoffs: Lost in quarterfinals to Byram Hills
Key returners: Chris Gillen (5-6), Sr., G; Kevin Schoen (5-10), Sr., F; Dima Monaghan (6-0), So., F; Charlie Clauss (5-6), Sr., G;
Newcomers: Tommy Girolumo (6-1), Jr., F; Ryan Trainor (6-0), Jr., G/F; Dan Cruz (5-6), Jr., G; Sean Delaney (6-2), So., G/F; Brandon Parker (5-7), So., G; Luke Giordano (5-8), Sr., G; Dominick Cristiano (6-3), Fr., F/C.
Coach’s notes: “We don’t have a single player that got significant playing time on the varsity level last year. Basically, we are a new team with a new coach and a new system. We are young and have a great deal of speed and will play small ball this year.”
MAHOPAC INDIANS
Coach: Kevin Downes (6th season)
Last season’s record: 16-6
Playoffs: Lost to Mount Vernon in the Class AA championship
Key returners: Brendan Hynes (6-3), Sr., F; Mike Simone (6-4), Sr., F; Anthony Lenahan (6-1), Sr., G; Dan Tully (6-2), Sr., G; Ryan Simone (6-4), Jr., F; John Delahanty (6-3), Sr., G; Ross Thompson (6-4), Sr., F; John Vitkus (6-8), Sr., C; Shane Carmody (6-0), Sr., G.
Newcomers: Chris Rhue (5-10), Sr., G; Glen Janik (5-11), Jr., G; Ethan Ryan (5-11), Jr., G; Kyle Dillon (6-0), Jr., G.
Coach’s notes: “Brendan Hynes returns as the teams leading scorer and rebounder from a year ago (19 points, 10 rebounds per game). Hynes was a big part of the BCANY team that won gold this summer and should be one of the better players in the section. The Indians return three starters from last year’s team, but will need to find consistent play to replace starters they lost to graduation in Zack Ankier (16 ppg, 9 rpg) and point guard Marc Vaccaro (10 ppg, 5 rpg, 5 apg). Sharpshooter Dan Tully and point guard Anthony Lenahan will need to fill those roles along with John Delahanty and Ross Thompson. The team will once again rely on rebounding and defense and should have a strong presence in the post with a healthy Mike Simone. Last season, he recovered from a torn Achilles. His younger brother Ryan Simone will be a factor inside along with emerging 6-foot-8 senior center John Vitkus.”
MAMARONECK TIGERS
Coach: Tyrone Carver Jr. (8th season)
Last season’s record: 12-6
2012 playoffs: Loss to New Rochelle in first round of playoffs
Key returners: Alex Lanni (6-4), Sr., C; Ryan Orgielewicz (6-3), Sr., G; Ryan Cadden (6-4), Sr., Ben Kalish (6-3), Jr., F; Ryan White (6-1), Sr., G; Brandon Damiano (6-0), Sr., G; Ross Garfield (6-3), Jr., F.
Newcomers: Scott Greenberg (5-10), Sr., G; Matt Bernstein (6-1), Jr., G; Kumar Nambiar (5-9), So., G; Dean DeLucia (5-8), So., G; Alex Parkinson (6-5), So., F; Will Giddon (6-3), So., C; Jack Green (5-11), So., G.
Coach’s notes: “Lanni is a four-year varsity starter, two-year all-league player; he averaged 15 points and 8 rebounds per game last season. … Injuries throughout the pre season has caused us not to jell as quickly as I would have liked. The team should be much better as the season progresses. There are five sophomores on the roster. The Tigers have the potential to be very solid defensively and a good offensive team. The team will need to replace the big shot making ability and leadership of Matt Mezansky. Alex Lanni and Ryan Orgielewicz will need to take on a greater scoring role and the leadership of Greenberg and DeLucia running the offense will be key. Players to watch would be Matt Bernstein and Ryan Cadden as they could have a huge impact this season. This team could be the deepest team Mamaroneck has had in my eight seasons.”
MOUNT VERNON KNIGHTS
Coach: Bob Cimmino (19th season)
Last season’s record: 23-3
Playoffs: Won Class AA state championship; lost to Boys & Girls in Federation
Key returners: Josh Doughty (5-11), Sr., G; Jamal Lewis (6-2), Sr., F; Traquann Scales (5-9), Sr., G; Jalen David (6-4), Sr., F; Gary Johnson (6-4), Sr., F; Brandon Martin (6-3), Jr., F; Yhanni Bartley (6-4), Jr., F.
Newcomers: Devonte Banner (6-1), Jr., G; Jordan Gregory (6-0), Jr., G; Ernest Monroe (6-0), Jr., G; Tyger Hackett (6-2), Jr., F; Jakeeme Sturgis (6-1), So., G; Kaison McDonald (5-11), So., G; Marques Henry (6-3), Jr., F; Daniel Williams (6-3), Sr., F.
Coach’s notes: “The Knights are two-time reigning state champs, but they return having lost all five starters to graduation, including Mr. Basketball, Isaiah Cousins, who has started as a freshman at Oklahoma. After two years as a contributor off the bench, Doughty will assume the role of the team’s leading playmaker. Lewis, who started at times as a junior, is one of the section’s best athletes. Big men Martin and Bartley have varsity experience as well. David, who played sparingly last season, is a potential breakout candidate. So is Banner, who is perhaps the most talented among a group of eight newcomers.”
NEW ROCHELLE HUGUENOTS
Coach: Rasaun Young (1st season)
Last season’s record: 12-8
Playoffs: Lost in quarterfinals to Mount Vernon
Key returners: Joe Clarke (6-3), Sr., F; Donny Powell (5-11), Sr., G; Derek Dorn (6-0), Jr., PG; Sean Fener (6-0), Sr., G; Terrence Holden (6-0), Sr., F; Benny Bracey (5-11), Sr., G; Hakeem Clark (6-1), Sr., F.
Newcomers: Khalil Edney (6-4), Sr., F; Brian Reese (6-2), Jr., F; Charles King (6-3), Jr., F; Alex Tucci (6-4), Jr., F; Antoine Lewis (6-0), So., G.
Coach’s notes: “Clarke, Holden and Edney will reunite after leading the football team to the Class AA state championship. Clarke and Holden both have starting experience. Clarke is the team’s leading returning scorer and rebounder and Holden is a rugged defender. Edney will return to the team after missing all but one game last season with a torn ligament in his finger. They will provide strength in the paint to pair with an experienced backcourt. Dorn is now the starting point guard, following in the footsteps of older brother Craig. Fener is the team’s best shooter and Powell came on strong at the end of last season. Young replaces Bill Murphy, who coached for nine successful seasons. The former New Rochelle and Buffalo star plans to play full court man-to-man defense and emphasize discipline.”
SCARSDALE RAIDERS
Coach: Jon Feld (9th season)
Last season’s record: 6-12
Playoffs: Lost in first round
Key returners: Jack Hewitt (6-7), Sr., C, Alex Squadron (5-9), Sr., G; Robert Plummer (6-0), Sr., G; Jon Cohen (6-0), Sr., G; Tyler Nathan (5-11), Sr., G; Brad Fiedler (5-9), Sr., G; Dylan LoBue (6-2), Sr., F; Peter Simon (6-5), Sr., F.
Coach’s notes: “This team has a lot of experience. If we shoot well, we have a nice inside-outside balance.”
SUFFERN MOUNTIES
Coach: George Kunzmann (4th season)
Last season’s record: 7-12
Playoffs: Lost to Fox Lane in first round
Key returners: Rashaad Celestin (6-4), Sr., F; Tyler McDine (6-0), Jr., G; Javin Williams (5-9), So., G; Chris Jefferson (6-0), Jr., G.
Newcomers: Kevin Jefferson (5-11), Fr., G; Gabe Cohen (6-1), So., F; Joaquin Scullark (6-3), Jr., F; Brendan Kenny (6-3), Jr., F.
Coach’s notes: “Although still a young team, all five starters played significant minutes last year so experience should not be a problem. Rashaad Celestin was our best defender last year and this year will be counted on to score as well. Chris Jefferson and Tyler McDine will also provide scoring punch. Our point guard position will be solid with Javin Williams and freshman Kevin Jefferson. Gabe Cohen, Joaquin Scullark and Brendan Kenny provide depth at the forward position. Justin Rosenblum, Ryan Morgan and Ethan Cramer provide depth at the guard position.”
WHITE PLAINS TIGERS
Coach: Spencer Mayfield (20th season)
Last season’s record: 8-11
Playoffs: Lost in first round
Key returners: Chris Jordan (5-10), Jr., G; Nate Hudson (6-5), Sr., C; Robert Lorden (6-3), Sr., F; Aaron Daughtrey (5-5), Sr., G; Devon Thomas (6-0), Sr., F; Marshon Morris (6-1), Jr., G; Kevin Trapp (6-0), Jr., G.
Newcomers: Mike DeMello (5-9), Jr., G; Justin Tapper (6-4), Jr., F; Rexler Noel (6-0), Jr., F; Quincy Bells (6-0), Jr., F; Ben Moss (6-3), Jr., F.
Coach’s notes: “Our team will rely on defense and rebounding to get into its transition game. We have quality depth at the guard positions and with the improvement by Nate Hudson and Robbie Lorden up front the team could be dangerous. We like the development of Kevin Trapp. Marshon Morris and Justin Tapper need to make big contributions. Mike DeMello will have a major impact on his team. He will be counted on for his leadership along with Aaron Daughtrey and Chris Jordan. The Tigers will play their usual tough, competitive schedule to get them ready for playoff time.”
YORKTOWN HUSKERS
Coach: Chris Caputi (1st season)
Last season’s record: 1-17
Playoffs: Did not qualify
Key returners: Anthony Coutsouros (6-5), Jr., F; Bryan Horgan (6-0), Sr., G; Andres Perez (6-0), Sr. F; Stephen DiMaria (6-0), Sr., G.
Newcomers: Ricky Corrado (6-2), Jr., F; Mason Dyslin (6-4) So., G; Luke Palmadesso (5-11) Jr., G; Conor Colgan (5-11) Jr., G; Patrick O’Meara (5-11) Jr., G; Jordan Bichler (5-11) Jr., G; Shawn Montague (6-1) So., G; Ryan Mahoney (6-2) Jr., F; Luis Cartagena (5-11) Fr., G
Coach’s notes: “A new group of Huskers will take the court this season and look to bring a competitive edge with lots of energy on a consistent basis. We will need to focus a tremendous amount on the defensive end of the floor and stay patient as offensive chemistry will take some time. There is a young mix of players with a brand new outlook for the 2012-13 season.”

CLASS A —
BREWSTER BEARS
Coach: John Martino (31st Season)
Last season’s record: 13-8
Playoffs: Lost in quarterfinals
Key feturners:Peter Cirocco (6-0), Sr., G; Brian McNeill (6-4), Sr., G; Donnell Patterson (5-9), Jr., G; James Wynne (5-11), Sr., G.
Newcomers: Conor Mitts (6-2), Jr., F; Will Carrion (5-9), Jr., G; Kyle Riccardi (5-9), Jr., G; Dan DePaoli (6-1), Jr., G; Chris Brandt (6-1), Jr., F; Chris Blank (5-9), Jr., G; Ted Galgano (6-4), Jr., F; Dan Mallon (5-8), Sr., G; Jon Volpe (6-1), Sr., F; Cameron Diebold (5-10), Jr., G.
Coach’s notes: “Cirocco and Patterson are out with injuries for the first month. Brewster graduated four starters, including 10 seniors. The team includes many juniors from a solid JV. Their ability to rebound, limit turnovers and play half-court defense will be key to our success.”
BYRAM HILLS BOBCATS
Coach: Ted Repa (11th season)
Last season’s record: 14-7
Playoffs: Lost to Tappan Zee in the semifinals
Key returners: Jeff Lynch (5-11), Sr., G; Ryan Golden (6-1), Sr., F; Brian Skelly (5-11), Sr., G; Andrew Groll (6-7), So., C.
Newcomers: Brandon Sencer (6-1), Jr., G; Jason Bernard (6-7), So., C.
Coach’s notes: “Lynch and Golden return for their final season after three years on the varsity squad. The two have led the team in scoring the last two seasons and hope to lead the program back to the gold ball. Skelly also returns after scoring 7.0 ppg off the bench as a junior. He is one of the section’s top shooters. The biggest improvement will probably be seen in 6-foot-7 sophomore Andrew Groll, who will look to take his game to the next level. The major concern is health. Lynch is still recovering from ankle surgery and others have more minor issues. If we can stay healthy, we have to the talent to be there at the end.”
EASTCHESTER EAGLES
Coach: Fred DiCarlo
Last season’s record: 15-5
Playoffs: Lost in quarterfinals to Poughkeepsie
Key returners: Jack Daly (6-2), Jr, G.; Nick Campana (6-0), Jr. G.; Kevin Teahan (6-0), Sr. G; Dan Ciardiello (5-11), Sr., F.
Newcomers: Ben Dimirco (5-6), Fr., G; Michael Milo (6-2) Jr. F; Rich Fonte (6-2), Sr., F; Anthony Gallucci (5-10), Jr., G; Michael Marsico (6-0), Jr., F.
Coach’s notes: “Eastchester is returning all-confernce player Jack Daly from last year’s squad. Dave Solano, a 1,000-point scorer, graduated and Eastchester will have to make up for his scoring and rebounding, which will be sorely missed. There is great depth to this year’s team. We will be undersized but will have speed.”
HARRISON HUSKIES
Coach: Gary Chiarella (6th season)
Last season record: 8-12
Playoffs: Lost in first round
Key returners: Nick Pipitone (5-11), Sr., G; Jack McCarthy (6-0) Sr., F; Coby Lefkowitz (6-4) Jr., F; Tim Broderick (5-11), Sr.,G; Zac Evans (6-0), Fr., F.

Playoffs: Lost in first round to Peekskill
Key returners: Jack Paccione (6-6), Sr., F; Will Jahn (6-3),
Sr., F; Matt Berstein (5-5), Sr., PG; Joe Kells (6-4), Sr., G/F; Nick Kiger (6-0), Sr., G; Scott Owen (5-7), Sr., G.
Newcomers: Jack Weiller (5-9), So., G; Matt Palacio (5-9), So., G; Spencer Marshall (6-0), Sr., G; Brandon Baryluk (6-3), Jr., F; Alex Garcia (5-6), Jr., G; Matt Wilmot-Stroud (5-6), Jr., G; James Kelly (6-0), Jr., F; Nick Ferrer-Gonzalez (6-1), Jr., F.
Coach’s notes: “Will Jahn is a three-year member of the team. This is the best group athletically, particularly on the defensive end of the floor, we have had in our three years at John Jay. Paccione and Jahn give us a nice high-low dimension to our offense. Our goal is to improve each day and compete at the highest level possible in practice and in our games.”
PANAS PANTHERS
Coach: Shawn Sullivan (11th season)
Last season’s record: 9-10
Playoffs: Lost in outbracket round to Harrison
Key returners: Vaughn Dweck (6-3), Sr., G; Tyler Mason (6-3), Jr., F; Timmy McCauley (5-10), Jr., PG; Jimmy Jackson (6-0), Sr., G; Eddie Hoffman (6-0), Sr., G; Javier Thompson (6-1), Sr., F; Brian Holderman (5-10), Sr., G; Daniel Scott (5-9), Sr., G; Brian Larkin (6-0), Sr., G; Mike McMahon (6-5), Sr., C; Lylle Ryals (6-5), Sr., F.
Newcomers: Tom Frost ( 6-0),Jr.,F;Tom Parish (5-10),Jr.,G,
Coach’s notes: “I think we have the ability to score the basketball. The success of our season will come down to how well we defend and rebound. Dweck is coming off a junior season were he shot 40 percent from 3-point land and averaged 16 ppg.”
PELHAM PELICANS
Coach: Mark Finegan (15th season)
Last season’s record: 13-6 (league champions)
Playoffs: Lost in first round
Key returners: Zack Rollins (6-3), Sr., F; Pat Condy (5-10), Sr., G; Jon Miller (6-1), Sr., C; Chris Ayson (6-1), Jr., G; Matt Rial (5-9), Sr., G; Nick Vrahimis (6-1), Sr., F.
Newcomers: Greg Sigelbaum (6-3), Sr., F/C; Ryan O’Neil (5-8), Fr., G.
Coach’s notes: “We lost our top three scorers to graduation, so we will be looking for players to fill that void. Rollins, Ayson and Condy all have the ability to score both inside and out. Miller, though not the quintessential big man, is an almost immovable force inside and finds ways to score and rebound against players who possess much greater height. Rial and Vrahimis also must contibute on the offensive end as well. Big things are expected in the future for freshman point guard Ryan O’Neil, a classic pass-first player who sees the floor extremely well.”
POUGHKEEPSIE PIONEERS
Coach: Brian Laffin (13th season)
Last season’s record: 15-8
Playoffs: Lost to Tappan Zee in championship game
Key returners: Jermar Dancy, Sr., G; Brandon Weir, Sr., F; D’Andre Smith, Sr., G; Devin Lawrence, Sr., F; Ray Knight, Sr., PG; Jahleel Carter, Sr., G.
Newcomers: Davonte Hamilton, So., F.
Coach’s notes: “We have a good group back from last year. Hopefull,y we can get through the early schedule and get healthy. We are banged up. Two of last year’s starters are out indefinitely. Brandon Weir (stress fracture in ankle) and last year’s starting PG Ray Knight (broken wrist) are key pieces that we hope to get back. We will depend greatly on our quickness and aggressiveness on defense. The team has worked very hard in the offseason and have done a great job of getting stronger.”
RYE GARNETS
Coach: John Aguilar 1st season
Last season’s record: 8-11
Playoffs: Lost in first round to Byram Hills
Key returners: Max Twyman (6-5), Sr., F; Mike Garofalo (6-2), Sr., PG; Mike O’Neill (6-1), Sr., G; Mike D’Antoni (5-11), Sr., G; Richard Hardis (6-0), Sr., F.
Newcomers: Drew Abate (6-1), So., F; Andrew Livingston(5-11), So., G; Daniel Mangum (5-11), Jr., G; Jay Little (5-11), Jr., G.; Grant Janart (6-1), Jr., F: Radin Mahdavi (5-8), Jr., G.; Conor Murphy (5-11), Jr, G.
Coach’s notes: “We have a unique situation of having five returning seniors mixed with seven newcomers to the varsity level. Max Twyman is an all-section player and should be one of the better all-around players in Class A. Our senior leadership and development of our younger players will be vital to the success of our team.”
SAUNDERS BLUE DEVILS
Coach: Anthony Nicodemo (4th season)
Last season’s record: 13-6
Playoffs: Lost in first round
Key returners: Rahbir Hamman (6-7), Sr., F; Anthony Holowiak (6-0), Sr. G; Erickson Gonzalez (6-2), Sr., G; Eric Mfodwo (6-0), Sr., F; Dylan McKenzie, (5-10), Sr., G; Steven Ayanruoh (6-1), Sr., F; Dijon Gonzales (5-11), So., G.
Newcomers: Derrick Felder (6-1), Fr., G; Dyhiem McMillan (6-3), So., F
Coach’s notes: “We will look to exploit the size of Hamman in the middle. I expect many of the young guys to contribute immediately. In saying that, they do not have much varsity experience. We will look to improve on a daily basis and be where we need to come February.”
SLEEPY HOLLOW HEADLESS HORSEMEN
Coach: Rob Rizzo (2nd season)
Last season’s record: 6-13
Playoffs: Lost in out bracket round
Key returners: Dionel Infante (6-0) Sr., F; Ronniel Muñoz (5-9), Sr., G; Nick Arduino (5-11), Jr., G; Alex Laub (6-5), Jr., C.
Newcomers: Manny Velazquez (6-3), Jr., F; Henry Hargitai (5-11), So., G; Mike Fortugno (5-10), So., G; Joey Good (5-9), So., G.
Coach’s notes: “Overall, the team is very inexperienced. Nine of the 12 players are underclassmen, including five sophomores. Seven of the players on the roster were on the varsity football team that lost to Somers in the Section 1 championship game. The players are extremely hard-working and coachable. It is going to be a very enjoyable year. How successful we are will be determined by how quickly our young players adjust to the demands of varsity basketball.”
SOMERS TUSKERS
Coach: Chris DiCintio, 1st Season
Last season’s record: 9-10
Playoffs: Lost in outbracket game
Key returners: John Decker (6-2), Sr., G; J.T. Genovese (6-8), Sr., C; Stefano Bicknese (5-11), Sr., F; Max Parks (6-9), Jr., C; Matt Moros (5-9), Jr., G.
Key newcomers: Josh Riger (6-3), Jr., F; Matt Arita (6-0), Jr., G; Conor Cousin (5-10), Jr., G; Anthony Maestri (6-2), So., F; Pat Melly (6-5), So., F.
Coach’s notes: “John Decker is one of the section’s best shooters. His leadership along with some returning veteran players will help the younger talent mature throughout the season. The Tuskers must use their size and strength to keep their opponents off the boards and limit their shots. They will look to play intense defense throughout the game, extending the court at times. The key to their offense is spacing and ball movement. If they trust one another, there will be plenty of opportunities to score for both the shooters and the bigs.”
TAPPAN ZEE DUTCHMEN
Coach: George Gaine (10th year)
Last season’s record: 25-1
Playoffs: Won Class A championship; lost to Harborfield in state final

Coach’s notes: “Tappan Zee returns one starter in Letizia, who is in his fifth year on varsity. Casey joined the starting lineup in the sectional semifinals and started the last six games due to injury. The team graduated its top four scorers, including the program’s all-time leading scorer, Pat Peterson. Scoring, experience, strength and rebounding will all be keys to the season after losing last year’s senior class, which won two gold balls and made three trips to the County Center.”

Newcomers: Richie McElligott (5-11), Sr., G; Daniel Ostrower(5-8), Jr., G; Frank Savino (6-2), Jr., F.
Coach’s notes: “We will rely on depth this year as we feature a roster with 10 returning players from a team that went 7-11 last season and lost to Rye in an outbracket playoff game. Newcomers: Cal Snisky (6-0), Jr., G; Scott Wurtzel (6-1), Jr., F; Simon Vogel (6-3), Sr., F; Greg Popper (5-10), Sr., G
Coach’s notes: “Adler is a four-year varsity player who will play next year at Division III St. Lawrence. He was the team’s leading scorer last season. Visoky and Brennan Schaenman are returning starters who will bring valued experience. A key to the season will be whether or not we defend and rebound the way we have in the past. Our outside shooting should be a strength.”
BRONXVILLE BRONCOS
Coach: Brian Senior
Last season’s record: 9-10
Playoffs: Lost in first round
Key returners: Matt Tormey (6-5), Sr., C; Luke Marrone (6-1), Sr., F/G; Dylan Murray (6-0), Sr., G; Ned Carpenter (6-2), Sr., F/G; Jack Connors (5-10), Jr,. G; Charlie Tarry (6-1), So., F/G.

Coach’s notes: “We are returning four starters, along with junior point guard Jack Connors, who sat out last year with an injury. We will look to improve upon our first round departure form the sectional tournament. With five of our top six scorers back this year, the team will need to focus on the defensive end of the court as we hopes to contend for a league title. We will look to lean on the experience of our returners, coupled with the intensity from our newcomers to lead us to the County Center.
CROTON-HARMON TIGERS
Coach: Bill Thom (28th season)

Captains: Ian Thom, Ben Goldberg, Jason Howald, Peter Miller

Coach’s notes: “We return our top scorer from last year’s team, Ian Thom. Additionally, Goldberg, Howald and Miller all saw lots of minutes last season. … We are inexperienced with five sophomores on the varsity. The Tigers graduated nine seniors from a team that finished in the top 20 in the New York State Sportswriters Poll. … Thom was selected to the BCANY all-state academic team as well as fifth team all-state in Class B. He was named league MVP as a junior. … The team has worked hard to date and hopes to improve during the 2012-13 campaign and, like last season, be in the hunt for league and section titles.”

Coach’s notes: “Paschall is among the area’s top returning players. He averaged 20 points and 9 rebounds per game as a sophomore and has already received six Division I scholarship offers. He and Kost are the only players who were in Dobbs’ rotation last season. Rhee is a transfer from Bronxville who scored 14 points on Dobbs at Bronxville in a game last season. Roca was called up during the regular season as a freshman to play point guard when then-starter Eddie Ritch was injured. He will likely assume the starting job. Soave, a 240-pound football star, will provide bulk in the paint. Riefenhauser, a hard-working player, will make his varsity basketball debut in the footsteps of his brothers, Gary and Ryan, and sister Ashley, who all play sports in college.”
EDGEMONT PANTHERS
Coach: Joe Galgano
Last season’s record: 7-11

Newcomers: Rom Chadha (6-2), Sr., F; Gagan Chadha (6-0), Sr., G.
Coach’s notes: “This year’s team will be relying on senior leadership and experience. Paul Emdin returns as an all-league player from last year. Rebounding and defense will determine how quickly this year’s team will improve on last year’s record. Solid contributions from our bench will also be a determining factor in this year’s success.”
HASTINGS YELLOW JACKETS
Coach: Ezra Elliott (2nd season)
Last season’s record: 8-11
Playoffs: Lost in first round to Pleasantville

Coach’s notes: “Tino was an all-league selection and the team’s leading scorer, rebounder and playmaker last season. He’s one of three returning starters with Scioscia and Polstein. Look for an improvement in scoring this season with a balanced attack and an emphasis on playing faster. Team defense and rebounding with strong play from the backcourt will again dictate the success of the team. Look for a strong season from Scioscia helping the team making some noise in Class B.”

Coach’s notes: “We are looking to rebound as a program after struggling last season. We return a solid core of seniors, along with several underclassmen who will be competing for playing time. O’Donnell returns as a senior after leading us in scoring last year; however, we’ll start the season without junior Jon Goldreich (injury), who was our leading rebounder and best defensive player a year ago. I think the strength of our team is the depth of our roster.”
NORTH SALEM TIGERS

Key returners: Umar Singh (6-5), Sr., F; James Langelotti (6-1), Sr., G; Joe Tunas (6-3), Sr., G; Kevin Zajc (6-0), Sr., G; Tom Cole (5-9), Sr., G; George Corde (5-10), Sr., G; Scott Martin (6-1), Sr., F; Connor Holliday (6-3), Jr., G; Terry Beyer (6-6), Jr., F.

He is one of the top 10 players in Section 1. Langelotti is much improved from last year as a result of off season workouts. Tunas can have a major impact. We’re also looking for major contributions from Corde, Zajc, Holliday, Martin, Beyer and Cole. The team’s commitment to defense will tell the story. We are the smallest Class B school in Section 1 and have a tough league with three Class AA schools and two Class A schools.

Key returners: Jack Eisenberg (6-1), Sr., G; Charlie Montgomery (6-2), Sr., G; Nick Greto (6-1), Sr., F; James Leyden (6-2), Jr., G; John Leyden (6-3), Sr., F; Paul Fleming (6-4), Sr., F; Charlie Tulchin (6-1), Sr., F; Mike Gratz (5-10), Sr., G.

Coach’s notes: ”Our eight returning players gained invaluable experience in tight games at the end of last season and our ability to overcome adversity will be the key to a successful season. We will look to our three senior returning starters to lead us: Jack Eisenberg (all-league), Charlie Montgomery (all-league) and Nick Greto. As our returning players step into new roles and our newcomers commit to the team concept, we will rely on defensive intensity to win games. The schedule is very challenging from beginning to end, so we’ll need to consistently execute and play with a sense of urgency night in and night out.”

Coach’s notes: “Franks finished as an all-conference selection and our league’s co-player of the year as a sophomore after averaging 16.0 ppg and 8.1 rpg. He is one of three returning starters along with junior Chris Cascione and senior Will Kebbe. Despite a roster that features mostly juniors, this is a deep team with several players already possessing valuable varsity experience. A key will be the development of its guard play following the graduation of the starting backcourt tandem of Brendan Crowley and Connor O’Shea. The team is looking to build upon last year’s winning record — the first time it has accomplished the feat in the past seven years.”

The addition of Ilegomah and Demasio will provide the ability for us to control the backboards. At 6-foot-10, Ilegomah has unlimited potential to impact the game at both ends of the floor. Strnad and Kinnally will provide valuable minutes and scoring.”

These four players will be looked upon to carry the load and guide the new inexperienced players while they get adjusted to playing on the varsity level. We will look to use our speed and athleticism to create turnovers and to get easy-chance opportunities as well create a tempo that favors our small, athletic team. We know we will have to undergo a learning curve with two freshmen and two juniors who have no varsity experience. This season will also be a unique season for us as we have transitioned from Class C to Class D. It will be our first season competing on this level and look forward to all the challenges that face us. We also have a very balanced schedule that will provide us the chance to play against top opponents in Class C as well as Class D. Yes sorry i met kai i met his mother who is a green when he was on jv last yr.
Peek,
Haha might be a distant cousin, my mom is a Green.
Thanks for the love, Josh. We’ll let the boys show it on the court now. We’re just supporters who want to see all the kids play hard and stay healthy. Enjoy the first wave of hoops, gents/gals.
I am not so sure Pok will do it. They have a lot of talent but will they have the mental approach to do it.
HOOPSMAN,
POUGHKEEPSIE WILL SHINE ALL YEAR,IF THEY WHERE STILL IN AA THIS YEAR,MV WOULD HAVE TROUBLE,
Well, Hoopsman, I look at it this way: Considering that Poughkeepsie made it to the Section 1 Class A championship game with a team comprised mostly of underclassmen, I don’t think you have to worry too much about the Pioneers’ mental approach…
Pioneer77, I’ve always believed that PK is at its best when it flies under the radar. The opposition will find out just how good the Pioneers are after the opening tipoff…
This PK team will definitely be good if I had to rank the top PK teams in the past decade it’d look like this…
1. 04-05 – (lost a close one to New Ro with McDermott, Parkes, Rice) in the semis. Pooh Bear, Ty Sweets and Herring….enough said. 21-3 I believe the were top 15/20 in the state, but they were definitely higher than their ranking.
2. This years 12-13 squad. Talent out the gym, but lets see how it translates on the court. If they win the State Championship I’ll give them the nod over 04-05. If they only win the Golden Ball I won’t, because the 04-05 had MUCH TOUGHER COMP with New Ro and the Coburn/Mitchell/Lowe Mount Vernon crew..if they’d beaten New Ro. Spring Valley was nasty that year too! Overall AA in Section 1 was tough that year.
3. 09-10 – loss to MV in finals (Dayvon “ChuChu” Whitaker, Nat’e Gause) -(20-2 #11 in NYS AA)
4. 06-07 – Loss to White Plains in semis (Patterson, Bellamy, Rasheed) plus Antonio and a young Brandon James. (21-3, #17 NYS AA)
5. 10-11 – 22-1 with only loss coming to Mount Vernon (Nat’e Gause unstoppable) #10 NYS AA
*03-04 – disappointing year at around 16-5 (but had 04-05 talent plus Ubiles and some other nice athletes like Whitlow, Ryan Williams, and Sherwood Thomas RIP)
Rocket,
I think the 05-06 team was better than 03-04. They had MV at the half, but MV’s press broke it open in the second half. Bellamy didn’t get the run he deserved that game and season, he was a mini Iverson back then.
They ultimately lost to a very good Suffern in the semis. Oates III caught fire, Francois had a good game and Buono did well in the paint. That game taught PK to not sleep on anyone and get the heck out of the zone when teams can pass and shoot!
My starting picks:
Dancy
Lawrence
Hamilton
Smith
Carter
Bench:
Taylor
Elvy
Stroud
Alvarado
Knight – starter last year out indefinitely with broken wrist.
Weir – Starter out indefinitely with stress fracture from football.
Noticed Woodlands has not posted a capsule yet. Any recruits this year? Haven’t heard much about em.
hooper,
heard they got two cousins. flying under the radar as well.
Havent seen Peek yet but they are replacing last years seniors with a talented Junior class. They are loaded with guards and have some size with Musheed and another athletic 6’6 kid. Biggest need is keeping everyone eligible and on the court and find a way to mesh as a team. If they can buy into a team concept they will be dangerous come february. Opening up with Pok will be tough considering their inexperience, wish they could play later on in the year when both teams are in full gear.
lefty,
That’s what the playoffs are for if we’re both healthy enough to get there.
States,
Yes in terms of success…05-06 was definitely better than 03-04. There are a few PK losses that still hurt..and that Suffern one hurts so much, I act like it never happened lol. But in terms of talent..03-04 had way more talent from top to bottom…Ubiles, Figueroa, Whitlow, Williams, Thomas, Pittman…versus 05-06…Stroman, Williams, Patterson, Harrell. The only major advantage was that 05-06 had way better guard play..which is essential for success. Ubiles was good but a shell of who he became later. 02-03 had lots of raw ralent too…but horrible attitudes and work ethics.
true wouldnt mind another CC meeting, hopefully as the final. Last year was extremely exciting despite it not being a crisp well played game; it was like a turnover and free throw missing contest lol.
Josh,
Gotta add those Kennedy Gaels under AA instead of A.
Also..
You’re right about Bellamy not getting enough run that year. Crazy how he got PKJ Player of the Year after that. The 07-08 team could’be better too..but I have no idea why Laffin didn’t play Chuchu that year. Thats when Chuchu and D.Clarke where sophomores.
Trap games PK has to watch out for are
Peekskillcan never sleep on a Lou P team…they can do to us what we did to them last year-Kingston (solid squad this year) a real good PG with Justin Robinson
White Plainscan never sleep on a Spencer Mayfield teamWatervlietone of the top 5 B teams in the state, and can hang withCan’t sleep on Kennedy, Peekskill,..not even TZ. And Burke will prob win Section 9 Class A this year (moved up)...don’t sleep on them too. They always hang with Newburgh, so they can hang somewhat with PK. Also when is Beacon going to be relevant again?? Roberto Macklin was exciting back in the day..but someone needs to come up in Beacon. lol
Rocket,
I got you. That Suffern loss is painful. Was at that game—the worst I’ve ever seen that PK team ever play and they still only lost by 2. Wide open missed layups. My friends on the team get tight when I bring it up, lol. I let them block it out of memory now.
Give Beacon 5 years or so. Notice a lot of people coming from the city and getting out of Dodge [Newburgh]. Not the biggest place but at about 15k they should start to turn it around soon.
Lefty,
Lol yeah it was an ugly one but picked up late. This one should be a lot more crisp.
North Rockland capsule?
Keep an eye on SOlomon Schechter in Class C.
Rocket, I remember seeing Roberto Macklin back during Beacon’s run to Glens Falls back in 2003-04. He had an amazing amount of athleticism (plus some help from Bryan Ortquist, who played the “Pippen” role to Macklin’s Jordan). Most people may not know this, but Melquan Bolding played varsity for Beacon as a freshman the next season. Since he left, Beacon just hasn’t been the same…
Jeff P.
Yeah man Macklin was electrifying. I played a pick up game with him and Doug Herring from PK a few years ago and man those two took over. Dougy dominated with the perimeter shooting game, while Macklin just superathletic and had his way. Got to the rack at will, threw down crazy jams and was swatting shot everywhere. Beacon really hasnt been the same. I remember Ortquist was a track star too…overall good athlete.
bolding was dc coaches tourney co mvp as a freshman playing for beacon. Pok will be the real deal in class a.
the young ciero might be one of top players this year
Statesman,
Is the Pok./Peekskill game at 2 P.M. at Peekskill?
Statesman,
Sorry, I also meant to ask if it’s Saturday. Thanks.
Po Fan,
No prob, it’s at NFA
and yes, next Sat the 8th.
Josh,
Pok was 15-8 last year. They were 11-7 going into playoffs and went 4-1 in playoffs.
Thanks. I fixed it.
Rocket,
The talent is in Beacon year in and year out but Coach Powers does not really work with the players in the off season.
Statesman,
Thanks for the information on the Pok/Peekskill game this Saturday. Since it’s at NFA, is it part of a tournament?
Po Fan,
No problem. Yes, I think the name is the Jefferson showcase. Think New Ro and some other heads will be there during the day. Should be fun.
Poughkeepsie may hit a few bumps early with the injury bug and needing to get healthy but this is a team built for a post-season run. I like Peekskill to win a close game on Saturday based on size and depth. Once Knight and Weir are back they will be deeper and better.
hoopsman,
I’m interested to see what Mohammed does vs Hamilton and Elvy.
North Rockland is the 5th best team in the section according to msg varsity nd we still dnt have a capsule on them..
Not really sure why people think that PK has a chance over Byram. Granted in the past Byram hasn’t had the most talented teams but they always manage to play the best with each other and are on another level when it comes to intelligence on the court. Lynch played on a broken ankle for half the season and Byram almost went on to beat TZ without him (losing by 2). PK lacks the IQ to beat them. My top 5 in Class A are Byram, Peekskill, TZ, PK, and Pearl River if they can get more looks than their big man. Should be an interesting season but you heard it hear first. Class A champ is Byram if Lynch and Golden stay healthy.
Wise One? PK lack IQ? Just another person trying to avoid his own prejudices. Hiding with terms like IQ. Why not say what you feel? Call them what you want to wise one. You are a joke.
Wise One,
Lack of IQ gets you to 6 straight chips, 5 of them being at the highest level—7 straight Final Four trips, lol this guy is funny. I like how he stuck this one on a thread that’s been dormant for a few days. PK’s team last year was young but developed and got to the promised land in the end. I hope Coach Laffin and his staff is reading this. Locker room material, statement out the gate on Saturday.
