I spent some time this afternoon at both Dobbs Ferry and New Rochelle to do some work on the high school basketball preview, which will appear in Friday’s Journal News. That will continue on Tuesday when I visit Tappan Zee and Wednesday when I stop by Mount Vernon.
For now, one bit of significant news to report…
Although he is still just a junior, Dobbs Ferry’s Eric Paschall already has SIX Division I offers, including from major or mid-major programs. They are:
West Virginia
Providence
Iona
Radford
George Mason
Northwestern
Several of those schools have paid visits to the 6-foot-5 guard at Dobbs Ferry. San Francisco and Fairfield have also visited Paschall at school.
West Virginia made its offer to Paschall after he torched the Boros for 35 points and earned MVP honors for the Burbs in last month’s Metro Classic.
I’ll have more on Paschall in Friday’s paper. Still, a very nice start for the area’s top young basketball prospect.

the guard from somers is john decker. you will be hearing alot about him and also north salem’s umar singh
also i believe scipio is not eligible to play bc of his age
Watch out for North Rockland
They are going to the County Center in AA
I saw Paschall in the City vs. Burbs classic. He was BY FAR the most dominant player on the court that day…yes even with Isaiah Whitehead on the court.
Today I’m going to watch the defending PSAL AA & A champs battle it out. Boys & Girls vs. Brooklyn Collegiate who lost to LI Lutheran at FEDS last year. Brooklyn Collegiate got moved up to AA this year. Should be interesting.
HR’s & Spacecadet
I need to catch MV soon too! How did MV look vs. Lincoln if you were there? Also who are they playing in city this year. I’m trying to catch them before January (hopefully).
States,
PK vs Watervliet is an intriguing matchup. They are the defending Class B runner ups and beat a real good Burke team from Section 9 who beat Amityville, St. Mary’s LI, Cornwall, and almost beat Christ the King. PK is a favorite being Class A, but I would not SLEEP on Watervliet, they were a great team last year.
Rocket . They open up in Canada middle December.. If you want to see them and stay in NYC area
Dec 22nd Bishop Loughlin @ Wadleigh HS.. There is a game at West Point Jan 2nd against a very big Bishop Kennedy might worth making a trip for. Home game against Benjamin Banneka in Feb I believe and of course you have the steady diet of Section 1 Tomato Cans..
Wood, I thought it was attitude. He and Tiny kept their distance.
SPACECADET,
Yes it was,and that team is bishop KEARNEY,biggest front court in ny state,6’8,6’9,6’10,SOPHMORE,junior,and senior
Rocket,
I know Watervilet well. Nice to see them match up. My sis lives in Shenec and she’s told me they get a few kids from SHS due to proximity like what happens at the dutchess schools.
STATESMAN,
DEVONTA HAMILTON ONLY MADE SECOND TEAM ALL-SECTION? WHAT’S UP WITH THAT,WOW
rocket…. Watervelit beating Burke is very solid. Burke well coached and ran out some D1 kids. In reality aside from the CTK loss and the Amityville win, the others you mentioned were not impressive. Burke was favored. Now if they play St. Marys this year it would be a whole new ball game. They ran out youth, had growing pains but its going to pay off. Well see them at the CC against New Ro. Jesse Govan is a big boy and Devonte Green is solid as well.
Space, thanks for the Jan 2nd date. That is trip I may have to make.
Wood,
Has two more years to put work in. First team if the hold doesn’t bring back his 80 yarder vs Harrison.
For now, all the world is his court.
STATESMAN,
HONEST QUESTION,
DO THE KNICKS BEAT NETS WITH KIDD,AMARE,AND SHUMPERT
Wood,
If Amar’e, Shump, Kidd come off the bench w/ Pablo and Rash yes—that second 5 is better than most starting 5’s in the league.
Also Felton has no business taking 19 shots in a game.
STATESMAN,
THANK YOU
Wood,
No doubt. I bet you could have gone fresh off the dock and shot better then 3 for 19 last night.
Just came back from Boys & Girls vs. Brooklyn Collegiate, & B&G won by at least 30 and got better as the game went on. B&G looks solid. They are quick, athletic, and play intense intense defense. Wesley Myers had his way and there big man #11 is a shot blocking and rebounding machine. They have a shooting guard (#10) think his last name is Salmon? He shoots LIGHTS OUT!!
Overall I was impressed, but I have to see MV and Lincoln to get a better idea too. Im gonna try and catch Lincoln this thursday. I would love to see an HV team hold it down up there in federations. Honestly I’d like to see any upstate team win FEDS. Does New Ro have a shot at MV this year?
Also is it just me, or the public schools in some of the upstate cities have not been making noise in the state tourney. What happened to Schenectady, Henninger, and the Buffalo pubs? I do know Rochester East gave HHW and Tobias a run for their money a few years back. But it seems the upstate pubs have not been as dominant as they can. Whens the last time a pub from Buffalo, Cuse or Rochester did anything significant in the state tourney. Henninger in 02?
States, I’m glad you know Watervliet is not to be taken lightly, hopefully the Pioneers know that too!
Frog… Read up on Bishop Kearney. That is the next big team from upstate. They are loaded and made the state tournament last year. A couple of 6-10 guys. I believe they are playing Mount Vernon this year during the regular season.
Josh,
I see that Bishop Kearney is def one of the next big things from upstate. It seems like this Cuse bound Chinonso Obokoh kid is the real deal. However, I was mentioning the upstate pubs. For instance the Buffalo Bennetts, Niagara Falls, Rochester East, Henninger, Proctor, Schenectady. It seems the upstate pubs in those larger cities have not made much noise. Of course Kearney, Albany CBA, McQuaid, and even Cuse CBA have made noise. But the last upstate team to make serious noise was the the 2002 Henninger team that beat Mt. Vernon. Whats your take? Even a school like Albany High with so many kids and so much talent but nothing really to show for it.
Kearney needs to be bumped up to AA. Another no bounds catholic playing in pubs. Knew a kid that went there that got pulled up to Florida. Glad to see them doing better but it is no fair to the little guys upstate with only 5-14k populations to work with.
States,
I believe Kearney was moved up to AA. Overall I enjoy watching good sports…but I agree that it is better when it is straight homegrown talent like the New Ro’s, PKs, Somers, Niagara Falls, Newburghs, Schenectadys of the world.
ROCKET,
MCQUAID BEAT MV ALSO AFTER 2004,WITH A KID NAMED “RALPH”
MCQUAID-57 MOUNT VERNON-50
2003 STATE FINAL
rocket #10 on Boys is Courtney Darnley. Very sweet touch. Whats crazy is their best player left. If Leroy Flood was there they would be the favorite to win the city this year. They will still be right but South Shore, Jefferson and Lincoln will have a say.
You bring up an interesting point about upstate teams. When my pops coached I remember Syracuse- Nottingham being nasty. Lasalle was also real good. To be honest I think the answer revolves around the coaching. They have the talent up there but no one knows what to do with it.
I did look up to see if any teams won recently(from the big schools). Niagara won in 2005. I think that was the team with Johnny Flynn and Paul something( I am forgetting his last name he went to Cuse).
Harris
Mv beat them in 2004,and Harris and flynn and starks the running back on the green bay packers, beat new rochelle with Jeff m. And ray rice.
HRs,
Paul Harris
JAMES STARKS DID NOT PLAY AGAINST NEW RO IN 2005,ONLY FLYNN AND HARRIS
STARKS GRADUATED IN 2004 AFTER LOSE TO MV
HRs
Yeah Courtney Darnley was his name. South paw with a silk smooth jumpshot. Hes smart player too, saw his dad on the sidelines talking ball and you could tell dad raised a ball player. Leroy Truck Fludd graduated, and was at the game to support with the Bryce kid from last year too. Fludd is a physically solid dude.
As for upstate, I think you may have hit it on the nail. The issue is probably coaching. Niagara Falls is the last upstate urban public team to do anything. However, I remember the Schenectady state champ team in 01 and the Henninger state champ team in 02. These guys could play. Plus Turner Carroll from Buffalo had some solid teams up there. Rochester has plenty of talent as East, Marshall and Wilson. Plus like you said Nottingham, plus Corcoran and Fowler. These guys are talented but have no one to help them develop it. Its even worse in football…besides this years Nottingham team. But they’ve produced some solid college and NFL players..Marquise Walker, Jo-Lonn Dunbar. They need coaching up there. It’d definitely improve NY sports. Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse publics need to make a comeback. Albany High too. They’re so bad for a school with so much talent.
Haywood,
Yes I remember that win. In fact..that was a AA or A at the time it was an upstate trifecta. 01 Schenectady, 02 Henninger and 03 McQuaid. However I was trying to focus on the publics. It seems the inner city public leagues up there have taken a back seat to the parochial and suburban schools. Its not necessarily that way up here. Yes for example Iona Prep and North Rockland may represent solid parochial and suburban basketball programs, but for the most part, the urban teams of Mt. Vernon and Poughkeepsie are also very good. Even if they’re small urban areas. But I’d come to the conclusion that HRs did, that it has to be coaching because the talent is there. It reminds me of Yonkers city schools. Plenty of talent but not much to show for.

Wood/States thanks for that. I couldn;t remeber his name. Kid was diesel. Should have played football instead1
Rocket… I stand corrected, Flood did graduate and went to prep school. I thought he was doing his senior year at prep. Coaching is a major issue in Sect 9 as well. Teams like Middletown and Kingston should be good every year not jsut once in a while. They have a large talent pool to pull from. Overall solid coaching is what hurts most when dealing with essentially every area. Plus you are not always getting the best coach when dealign with publics, you get a tenured teacher who wants extra cash. That doesn’t equate to victories.
The kid from Lincoln last year was Leroy ‘Truck” Fludd. He is prepping at South Kent this year.
HRs
Yeah I’d agree about Section 9. Although Middletown has made progress recently. They have tons of raw talent. Middletown severly underachieves in football with all their talent. Monticello is another program that has gone down. Hall of famer Dick O’ Neill coached there for years. They used to be real good. Raw talent but kids getting into trouble. There last Section 9 title team (02) was good and they sent a kid to PITT, but they got destroyed by Peekskill with Rashad Turner and Hilton Armstrong who lost to Jason Fraser and Amityville (talk about competitive Class B).
Buy you’re right. The best coaches are not always leading teams in the public schools. So we have guys that are not totally invested. But I think part of it is that basketball has become so commercialized that a high school coach essentially has to do what a college coach does for pocket change. Guys with families may find this hard to do year round nowadays.
*IC Fan – Truck went to B&G
Rocket you have a very impressive memory. That Peeky team was excellent, but Amityville was def. better. Aside from Fraser they had Tristain Smith, a kid Mcintyre who went to Stonybrook, another guard who wound up playing football and I think AJ Price was on that team as a freshman. I actually read that Fraser is invloved in a basletball company called Game 7. He had an attitue issue but he could ball and injuries killed him. Its nice to see him succeed.
With Middletown, a few NFA bloggers seem to like that new coach. Lets hope he stays and continues to churn out solid players. I think there are two kids on the team this year with D1 potential(one being another Ray)
Great last paragraph..so very true.
st rays MV.. anyone attend?
SOMEBODY WAS THERE SPEAK UP
HRs
I remember McIntyre. He was a real physical player. AJ Price was a sophomore that year. That year Walt Whitman and Amityville were the two best on the island. That Peeskill team also had Chris Horton and Keith Stanton who were solid too. Fraser def underacheived at Nova for the reasons you mentioned.
As for the NFA bloggers perspectives, they’re right. The new Middletown coach is committed and developing a strong program. The other kid whos a DI beside Ray is Travis Cook who has a few DI offers. Very athletic kid. Jumps out the gym.
And the last paragraph in my other post, its hard to swallow as a new reality with high school basketball. There are some coaches who are still holding on. Old timers like Lou P at Peekskill, Cimmino at MV, Hurley at St. A’s, and a the countless others who aren’t from impressive winning programs, but they get the most of their kids and send them to college and the real world with life lessons.
right rocket…brain fart, Fludd was at B&G. After college he should try his hand at football…. he looks like a future TE ala Antonio Gates.
Also, Tavon Sledge has been playing well for the Iona Gaels in his first season there. He had 12 points, 6 rebs and 5 assists last night against Niagara (Anthony Mason’s son, Antoine, had a very nice game with 24 points)
Wood.. you aware of fridays scrimage
SPACECADET,
