CHSFL semifinals: No revenge for Iona in semifinal loss to Chaminade (UPDATED)

The CHSFL will hold its semifinals this weekend, one of which will be played this afternoon in New Rochelle. Iona Prep will seek revenge for its only loss of the season when it meets Chaminade, which beat the Gaels at home 34-31 in September.

I’m up in Syracuse, but my colleague Phil Terrigno will be on hand to cover the game. He’ll have updates on Twitter @philterrigno [1] and I’ll pass them along as well.

We’ll post a recap of the game afterward with stats and reaction. Check back for that this afternoon.

Chaminade 41, Iona Prep 16

CHSFL AAA semifinal
Chaminade 41, Iona Prep 16:
In their last meeting on Sept. 22, it took a fourth quarter comeback for Chaminade to edge Iona Prep. In the CHSFL AAA semifinal at the second-seeded Gaels, a consistent and forceful effort pushed the third-seeded Flyers past host Iona Prep 41-16.

Chaminade junior quarterback Sean Cerrone passed for four touchdowns and
Robert Speranza had rushing touchdowns of 59 and 31 yards for the Flyers.

”(Cerrone) had a terrific day,” Iona Prep coach Vic Quirolo said. “He is a
terrific player. They¹re tough and he makes them go.”

Chaminade advanced to the CHSFL title game and will face the winner of No. 1 St. Anthony’s and No. 4 St. Joseph by-the-Sea Dec. 2 at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale.

The Gaels dealt with losing seniors Mike Barbuto and Austin Jones to injury
during the contest.

“We were mixed up in the coverage, we lost Mike Barbuto and he is the one
that makes all of the (defensive) calls,” Iona Prep linebacker Alex Raimondi said.

Senior Quarterback Mario Biaggi accounted for both of the Gaels’ touchdowns
with runs of 10 and 60 yards apiece.

“It’s about how much you want it,” Biaggi said. “You can talk about X’s and
O’s all you want but if you want to get a touchdown and break off for a
touchdown, you do it.”

Biaggi threw an interception in the third quarter on a deep ball in the
middle of the field that he launched as he was getting hit.

“I was looking at the safety and I couldn¹t really tell where he was going,” Biaggi said. “He made a good play and I threw it up too late. That’s on me.”

Christian Knapp hit a 21-yard field goal for Iona Prep.
