Below is Rick Carpiniello’s column from Tuesday’s paper. Like some of you, Carp deemed Somers’ task “impossible” because of its condensed playoff schedule. The Tuskers’ loss to Cornwall was their third game in 10 days.
I encourage you to read Carp’s column and leave us your take. First, a few sobering facts about the impact condensed playoff schedules have had on Section 1 football representatives in the state tournament.
SECTION 1 STATE TOURNAMENT FACTS
• In 16 Class AA tournaments, Section 1 has sent six teams to the state final and produced two champions (1996 Roosevelt, 2003 New Rochelle).
• In 19 Class A tournaments, Section 1 has sent eight teams to the state final and produced three champions (1993 North Rockland, 2000 Nyack, 2003 Nyack).
• In the eight combined instances of condensed Section 1 playoff schedules in Class AA (2005-06, 2011) and Class A (2005-07, 2011-12), Section 1 has not sent any teams to state finals. Obviously, it has also yet to produce a state champ.
• Section 1’s state playoff record in those games is 3-8

MAHOPAC — The mission was impossible for Somers High’s football team.
And before this starts to sound like an excuse, be very certain of this: Cornwall, the Section 9 champ that beat the Tuskers 34-13 in the state Class A quarterfinal Monday, would have been an absolute handful for Somers, or anybody in any class in Section 1, on a complete week of rest. Or more.
But for Somers to have to play its third game in 10 days; and to have played a championship game, then turn around with three days’ rest, and one day of actual practice, and play a team like Cornwall … well, it just wasn’t going to happen.
That’s not an excuse. That’s fact.
“We prepared as well as we could and we played really hard,” Somers coach Tony DeMatteo said. “But we made some mistakes that we probably wouldn’t have made if we had some time to practice. You can’t play a football game in two days. You just can’t do it.
“They were a very good team. But they had eight days to get ready for us, we had two to get ready for them. It’s ridiculous.”
Blame? Well, the popular and very legitimate blame is on the three-games-in-11-days Class A playoff system, which coaches will put on the superintendents, and indirectly on the athletic directors, since Section 1’s season starts later than the other sections in the state.
So, for a 29-team conference like Section 1’s Class A, the only other options would be a six-game regular season or a four-team playoff — and that would have meant no playoffs for 6-1 Poughkeepsie or 6-1 Saunders this year, to name two.
“The whole problem would be cleared up if we started on time,” DeMatteo said. “It’s not the early starting date, it’s starting on time. What Section 1 is doing to these football kids is disgraceful. It’s absolutely disgraceful.”
Then came the monkey wrenches, in the form of Sandy and a nor’easter. Both storms hit during the week. None of the other classifications were playing during the week but A. All the other classes got all their games in pretty much on schedule, despite the destruction, the lack of power, and the snow.
You can’t blame anybody for Sandy and the snow.
Obviously, only one team was going to be affected to the max even in good weather — the Section 1 Class A champ.
Here’s what Somers endured:
It played its final regular-season game on Saturday, Oct. 20, had four days off, then played its first playoff game on Thursday, Oct. 25. Somers was scheduled to play again on Tuesday, Oct. 30, but Sandy scuttled that (and some practices) and caused repeated postponements to Saturday, Nov. 3. That’s when Somers played a very physical semifinal with Harrison, then had four days off, including a snow day, a postponement and a field change for its Thursday, Nov. 8 final against Sleepy Hollow.
Then came the three days off and Cornwall, which got an extra day of rest out of the delayed state quarterfinal, but will pay the price by having to come back on three days’ rest for the semifinal against Burnt Hills Friday.
“The coaches do a great job of preparing us,” Somers lineman Dylan Owen said after a game he left twice with a shoulder injury. “And our team, we do a great job of taking it in, and doing the helmet(-only) practices. But if we had a little more time, I felt we could have done it. We played our hearts out and did everything we could.
“We were definitely banged up a little bit, having so many games on such short notice. But we put it all on the field, and what happened is what happened.”
Kids being kids, these kids weren’t thinking they were, as DeMatteo put it, “gassed.”
“We had enough left,” lineman Robert Pontbriand said. “Obviously the short week throughout the entire playoffs hurt us, but it wasn’t really that we had nothing left. We had enough left. We were good to go.
“It’s not like we were running on empty fumes.”
Added Joe Lombardo: “I’m not going to make too many excuses about that, but I’m sure no team wants to have that. You just couldn’t prepare as much as you want to.”
Somers ran into a slinging quarterback named Mike White, who was armed with skilled receivers and backs and immense linemen, and those linemen sure were engaged by the Somers group of Pontbriand, Owen, Dan Campbell, Jason Falasca, and Sean and Steve Jennings. Somers’ big guys dominated the section through 10 straight wins.
“We were nicked up; we were tired,” DeMatteo said. “We did the best we could, given the situation.
“I told them at the end of the game, their effort was tremendous. There just wasn’t enough time. I’m proud of what they accomplished, what they did for me, and how hard they practiced and worked. These kids make me want to coach forever.”
Or at least four more days.

Hey Dragoon…...your coach wants out. Better pay him!
CHOCOLATE IS GREAT
HeyCoach DeMatteo- instead of complaining about practice time, etc, why don’t you acknowledge that you didn’t coach your best game. Poor clock management at the end of the 1st half. You have a 1st down with 50 sec left and kill the ball and then run off tackle? Now its 3 rd down and an incomplete pass. 4th down- pick in the red zone and you go into the half with a timeout on the board.
Any down with less than 3 yds to go- #44 off tackle. You have a QB thats 6’1- how about a sneak?
3 turnovers inside the opponents 20 and you turn it over.
Cornwall was a buzz-saw. Somers was not stopping that Offense. Trying to have your DE’s cover the flats? Come on man!!
Instead of complaining about the system…..CHANGE IT COACH!!!!!!!!!
@Dragon Fever – - That is a very good point, In Class A, Cornwall should play Section 2 first then Section 1, but that might not work because Section 1 would play 1 game then in at Syracuse.
@here we go again, maybe the kids were ready to play, maybe its the Coaches who need the extra days rest!
IMO – - The Section 1 playoffs is a competitive field. While Section 9 plays Section 2, Section 1 could finish their competitve playoffs which is similar to a State playoff game. And the Champion of Section1 plays the winner of Section 2 or 9. We have 29 teams in Class A. With a right system, and the right way, there were 4 teams who couldve competed to the wire with Cornwall this year. I am not knocking Cornwall, they have a very good team this year, but its seems when we rush our games/system we never compete to our highest potential and that is frustrating to Class A fans
Not a bad idea, but NO way “4 teams who couldve competed to the wire with Cornwall this year”.What four teams??I find that funny because White threw for over 400 yards against Somers, what would he do to teams like Harrison,Poughkeepsie,Yorktown,Sleepy, and JJ??
Didn’t a number of posters say something this fall about hating lacrosse? Not sure why. The numbers below tell the story. To put these NLI signings and schools into proper perspective, some of the lacrosse signings announced in Section One would be comparable to football players signing with Alabama, University of Southern California, Oregon, etc. The equivalent to those football powerhouses in lacrosse are UNC, Johns Hopkins, Loyola, the 2012 NCAA Division 1 National Champion.
http://www.lohud.com/article/20121115/SPORTS02/311150034/College-signings-Saniya-Chong-Jack-Grass-many-others-commit?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Frontpage|p
More than twice as many lacrosse NLI signings as baseball signings. Lacrosse = 19. Baseball = 9
Jack Grass has made several unofficial visits to the campus book store over the last two years to pick up the latest gear, so the Bronxville lacrosse standout was excited and relieved to make his commitment to Johns Hopkins official. Grass will have familiar company in the fall. Trevor Koelsch, a lockdown close defender from Yorktown, and Matt Ledwin, a faceoff specialist from Hen Hud, will also be heading to play at Hopkins. John Jay lacrosse standout Jack Lambert is headed to North Carolina. Boys lacrosse commitments included John Jay’s Tom Beck (Rutgers) and Mike Skluth (Albany); Mamaroneck’s Tom Brill (Tampa) and Peter Conley (Georgetown); Yorktown’s Danny Manning (St. Joseph), Nick Mariano (Massachusetts), Jack Phelan (Rutgers) and Brian Prestreau (Stony Brook); Alex Carpolongo of Somers (Stony Brook); Joe Fraietta of Hen Hud (Stony Brook); Jake Kaiser of Byram Hills (Fairfield); Luke Pearson of Hastings (Binghamton); Ross Schnitzer of Iona Prep (Loyola); Johnny van de Veerdonk of Putnam Valley (Georgetown) and Brewster Warble of Bronxville (Brown).
Baseball signings included Iona Prep’s Ryan Crowley (Monmouth), Nick Figari (Fairfield) and Vinny Martin (Iona); Somers’ J.T. Genovese (Albany) and Joe Scambia (Northeastern); and Richard Slenker of Fox Lane (Yale), Stepinac’s Skylar Mercado (Maine), Fox Lane’s Matt Oniffrey (Maryland) and Kennedy’s Schuyler Bates (Penn State)
I will say watching highlights, the first td vs somers was a ball tossed up, kid never should have caught… Then when he Catches at mid field how foes no one tackle him???? Throw in the somers turnovers first half.. That was the game… Somers could have been leading at half time… Now a whole diff game!
@Dragon – IMO Harrison, Somers, Poughkeepsie, or Yorktown wouldve given Cornwall a game.
250 pass yards by White were spot passes. A spot pass is when the QB is under pressure and he throws the ball in the air and hopes a WR will get under it and make the catch. Its a practice drill.. If you could msgvarsity, Cornwall Coach admits to it, that he was holding his breathe or closing his eyes when the pass was thrown, and he was excited that Cruz came down with it!
@Dragon
Harrison had the worst scenario for a playoff run, beat Rye broke a 9 game losing streak in front of 6,000 fans. Then played Poughkeepsie ranked #6 in all Section 1 in 4 days, then played Somers #4 which Somers ran up 21 pts in the 1st qtr, Harrison came back but fumbled on last drive inside Somer’s 10 w 3 min to go. Bogus playoff scheduling
Poughkeepsie – was clicking on all cylinders, they were and are a great competitive program. POK took Harrison to the wire, and lost on a roughing the passer call tied at 24-24. And Harrison ran the ball down to score 31-24 with a minute left
Yorktown – really came on at the end of the Season. The put up over 50 pts on JJCR. I would say Mariano is alot like White as a passer. Mariano who is a Division 1 lax player committed to UMass is alot like White. But Yorktown came on strong alittle to late to miss the playoffs. A 6-1 development team made the playoffs instead of Yorktown. The development team lost 38-6 in the first round
Somers – - The best team in Section 1? I would say its a toss up. somers played 1 tough team all season Poughkeepsie Week 4, then a cupcake schedule. Next tough game Harrison, 2nd round of the playoffs..
So i say, Somers had the easiest path to win the Section title. Harrison was emotionally and had a rough schedule Rye then POK. Poughkeepsie wouldve had a revenge game against Somers and couldve won if the playoffs were correctly seeded. Yorktown shouldve been in instead of Saunders… Harrison the best team granted the worst/hardest playoff schedule. And Hollow Fan, there is NO WAY Sleepy beats Harrison, POK, Somers, or Yorktown
@Dragon – Cornwall is a very good team. Maybe this year, Cornwall is the better team then my Pick 4. I am not making any excuses. I think our playoff competition is just like a State tourney in competitiveness. Good Luck against Burnt Hills and IMO you have a very good chance advancing
IMO – Harrison would been a great match up to stop White. Harrison Coaching staff has proven to stop the Spread. 2010 Harrison Syracuse run, HHS 1st team defense let up 0 points to Wallkill then Burnt Hills
RT
I agree. Section 1 doesnt have great teams, they have great programs. Harrison and Nyack are perennial powers. Somers Pok Ossining etc are all great programs. Sec 9 has Cwall and Wallkill. Its a joke that section 9 has a 4 team playoff. Ironically, I can remember 5 years back when no one in your section had any respect for Cornwall. Funny how a 4-1 record against your section has changed that.

JUST…. I SEE A SIMILAR OFFENSE TO TROY WITH LESS ATHELTES AND SPEED
THOUGHTS!
Prince, I am thinking less athletes, less oline….. Less football players… Clarkstowns could beat this team by the outside looking in…
I expect blow out… Unless new ro turn overs 5 xxxx
You?????!!
@Justafactasaurs/Prince – 40-0 HT
I just watched the video and New Ro’s speed on defense will be the X-Factor
Rt, love the idea combine sect 9 in classA and just play hudsonvalleybowl at michie stadium..
Why are these games with sect 9 in Kingston??? Stu – pid..,
The only problem, Justafactasaurus, is that Section 9 probably has no intention of pulling out of the state playoffs – especially to accommodate Section 1’s decision not to start football on time….
Bottom line: The situation affecting Section 1 football in general and Class A on particular will not improve until the Section’s administrators resign or are replaced. Evidently, that is our only hope of getting Section 1 football practice started when it is supposed to start…
Everyone knew Somers was going to win the sectional championship, Cornwall was watching film on them before they ever played the game…
Jeff p… Truuuuuueee…. Still would be fun to watch!
Class A should either start a Week early or Back out of the States and have a 16 team playoffs..
Section9 will get a bye Week. This scenario happened last week for Shaker coming off a bye Week to play New RO
Who made all section and who r best backs in A

You????
JUST.. WILL LET YOU KNOW THE SCORE FRIDAY!!....
Prince, who is #1 this week??
Hey big joe! The market is taking a beating since the election… Should i pull out of my mutual funds an go ultra conservative for a while? I am nervous of another 2008 crash…deficits, 16+ trillion dollar debt…. Etc. thanks.
Sec 1-the issue was VERY much in doubt until Harrison fumbled inside the 10 with 3 minutes to go. Somers amassed a big lead early which the Huskies couldn’t overcome, then made the plays you need to make at the end to be a champion. Harrison actually outplayed them after the first quarter. And believe me; Cornwall has faced Harrison twice in the past 7 years, and saw them manhandle their champion 2 years ago on their way to the Dome, so don’t think for a second they didn’t think they might have to face them a third time.
Classaobserver-don’t panic; go long!
Emailed Superintentent of Nyack HS to voie concerns. He basically said our school district through athletic director voted against late start date and the 3 games in 11 days, so get the other districts to do the same and it will change. Nyack schoool district is on board. Where are we with the others????? Can other parents, coaches fans, email their superintentents to find out which districts are not on board or get the results from last vote.
Rotten Tomato
Stop already!! Somers was better than Harrison this year, get over it!!! We beat Poughkeepsie pretty good and beat you ON YOUR HOME FIELD!!! And it wasn’t a fumble. Our kid stripped the ball out and then we marched downfield and put the game away. Enough crying!! No Section 1 Class A team was beating Cornwall anyway. They are the best team and I wish them luck tonight!
