Thanks for the clarification MV71, I got Shanty and Dexter mixed up. So technically there were 7 D1 guys on that squad. Amazing to say the least. What ever happened to Will Cherry from the 02 team. I believe Jomo went to James Madison, but I never heard much about Will after that?
Great info everyone. So enjoy reading about older teams as well as seeing the passion behind the keyboard.
Wood I think Telfair lost to Washington’s FL team too. What is the date for the MV/Kearney game? And where is it being played?
States,
I’m glad to hear those guys are doing alright. I see Dougy doing his thing locally to with the HV Kings semi-pro team. The crazy thing about that 05 team was that Ubiles had gone to CT, but he would’ve also been a senior on that team. The 01-02 PK team was decent too. Skip, Ratboy, and Bishme. I actually have old VHS footage of their Section 1 title game against MV. They lost 62-65. MV has been PK’s achilles heal, the way Nyack used to be for football.
HRs, are you a MV guy?
Rocket, I didn’t graduate from there but I have followed them for many years. I actually graduated from Pearl River, but my hoops background started when I was a kid. My father was the coach of Samuel Gompers in the BX. Goes back to the 80’s when they were dominant and he won a city/fed championship. Was the only Bronx B team ever to do it until somewhat recently(Wings won at some point) Needless to say I have seen some of the best of the best play in high school throughout my lifetime. Kenny A, Lloyd Daniels, Arnold Bernard, King Rice, Malik Se and his Tolentine team(Which may have been the best HS team EVER). I can go on and on. Anway, he stopped coaching after 10 years. Left having never lost a league game in 5 years, 3 city championships and a state championship.
HS hoops is still a very active part of my life/family. Bonding time a lot for my dad and I and now my little guys come with me. My brother was a 1000 pt scorer at PR also had 63 in a game. And to boot he lit up Peekskill and Pok his senior year(1988 in some tourney at Peeky). I on the other hand dabbled but catching was my sport. Played college baseball instead.
HRs,
KEARNEY is at.mount Vernon,I do not have the date yet
Rocket,
Welcome to the blog. I saw MV play at I S 8 this fall. Had no idea what to expect. They played well there, they surprised me as all were question marks coming in. They have no real hgt this
year. Just a bunch of scrappers. They will be a tough out in Westchester, hard to see them competing against national teams this year.

You’re a true basketball purist…I dying breed with all the commercialism that has entered the game. I love basketball at the local high school level because it hits home more. Being from NY but spending time in Philly, and Boston, I always became involved and watched local basketball. Philly had a nice scene and tons of talent, Boston was ok but not spectacular….but NY metro is simply 2nd to none. We’re blessed to be in this region and exposed to such good basketball from the Hudson Valley, to NYC to North Jersey.

Thanks, I really enjoying talking hoops with you guys. I can tell you guys have seen a lot of good ball in your time, and I’ve always enjoyed local ball. It’s going to be different not seeing MV with “the guy” this year. From Cousins, Hinds, Jones, Wright, Coburn, Mitchell, Lowe, Benjamin, Gray, Belfor, Cherry, Gordon down to the Williams and McCray brothers…MV will find a guy.
is it time to wake up?
Who is THE GUY this year?
MV-TEAM,
JAMAL LEWIS
BRANDON MARTIN
JOSHUA DOUGHTY
YANNI B.
YOU PICK ONE,
Rocket preach it! My pops coached the right way too. City got the best of him. Took the fun out and he had to walk away. I wish he didn’t. Tom K still sees him at toruneys and asks for him to get back in the game.
Space… WAKE UP. Its hoops time!!

Good ol’ Tom Konchalski is a living legend! He’s done so much for hs ball in the tri-state. I’m glad you’re father was a man of integrity. It’s hard nowadays with all the shoe deals and AAU royalty. Kids are kids, but the level of distractions are on another level. Gompers is in a tough little area down in the South Bronx. I’m sure your dad made the court a safe haven for the guys that walked through those hallways. If its not fun and the kids are not 1st…then it isn’t worth it.
What were some of your dads biggest games outside of PSAL teams back in the 80’s?
Spacecadet
Yes it’s about that time…......lol. Should be a fun year. Let the games begin.
how does tappan zee not get a game lol. they are the defending section champs in class a.
Tom still send out that newsletter on a type writer!
You are right in regards to the area in which Gompers stands. Keeps you in the right perspective when growing up in the burbs though. I was exposed to a lot of things and it made me a better person today. My dad’s style of play was run, run and run on offense and then press, press and press on defense. His goal was to speed up the game. Still remeber him watching NC games with a clip board in the living room. He loved Dean Smith. He would chart the plays right on the spot.
One thing about him was he ran it right. You missed class, you didn’t play. He stressed education and discipline to these kids. Coach C reminds me of my dad. Obviously a smaller version but that is the way he did things.
If you remember back then, playing out of state was not the norm. Plus Gompers had zero budget to do a thing. They didn’t even have a home court for a long time. So his biggest games outside of the PSAL were in the feds. I remember him getting waxed by CTK when they had Jamal Faulkner in the feds. He also lot to Lasalle who had a few beasts back then. Along with another team from up there. I am forgetting the name. He did play up when he had the chance. One huge game in the PSAL was when he played Kennedy. They were king of the A and Gompers was king of the B. They wound up losing that game to a sold out gym. It was insane . Fights during game and gun shots outside after. Back then the passion was there just not seen like it is on TV now.
The year he won the Feds he beat Loughlin and Westbury. That was the team that had Chris Brooks. We have spoken about him on the blogs before. Chris was amazing. His prestige also led to my father’s first true experience with being used and adults not having the best interest of the kids. His assistant was close with Chris and Chris listened to him. Chris didn’t have a dad so he looked up to the asst. quite a bit. Long story short, Chris left Gompers and went to Oak Hill along with the asst. who then in turn got Chris to go to West Virginia where the assistant was given a coaching job. In the end Chris never got any better and didn’t pan out. His best years were at Gompers.
Sad story of too many kids nowadays. Somebody uses them and when they don’t pan out they leave them.
I’m a teacher (in an extremely high need school) and Im always stressing to my students to take care of what they need to and prioritize, because one day, everyone who babied them won’t be around and they’ll have to survive in a world that shows little pity and doesn’t care much about your home situation. Coaching and teaching are essentially the same thing, but they’re both becoming more of a challenge in the sense that kids are bombarded with distraction. Even school spirit has died in many places. Kids have other things to do instead of go to a basketball game. They’d rather get fast money running with the wrong crowd. Thats why I tip my hat off to the Bob Cimminos, Bob Hurleys, Ruth Lovelaces, Ron Nacelerio’s of the world. I used to love John Chaney from my alma-mater (Temple). He would get these tough North Philly kids with teeth in their stomach lol..they were just tough. But he held them to a high standard and taught them all kinds of life lessons from the 5am practices to the little defensive drills he’d do with them. Priceless stuff!
When a coach holds his players accountable for their academics and behavior..he’s preparing them for life. Coaches have absolutely no idea how much their players look up to them. I coached middle school basketball in Boston for two years…and just about every drill, every play, and my coaching identity was influenced by my coaches. If they only knew.
IONA is gonna get ceam pied this year..when do these girls scrimmage so i can watch a jv team
