Quick update: I left New Canaan early Saturday. I was primarily up there for other reasons, namely to write a story on Scarsdale dealing with a recent tragedy to its football family. (More on that tomorrow…)
However, I can tell you that Iona Prep won the championship of New Canaan’s Grip It and Rip It Passing Tournament this afternoon at the sprawling Connecticut campus. The Gaels had started 4-0 in round-robin play and Austin Jones was named the top wide receiver. Iona then went on to sweep through the playoff tournament.
Iona QB Mario Biaggi was named tournament MVP. He had a ton of weapons to work with today, including Jones, Chris Cooper and Shaquille Townsend.
A 7-on-7 tournament isn’t necessarily an indication that this Iona team is championship caliber, but it’s a pretty good start. The Gaels also won White Plains’ 7 on 7 earlier this summer.
