This is the time of year where I delve into the task of selecting our all-star and all-county teams, along with plenty of help from area coaches. We pick five first-teamers, five second-teamers, and a group of honorable mention players, as well as a player of the year and a coach of the year.
There are separate teams for both sides of the river. Westchester and Putnam schools have their all-star team and Rockland has its all-county team.
The top prizes are always the players of the year. So, who are your picks?
Who’s the Westchester/Putnam player of the year?
And who’s the Rockland player of the year?
Please write in your picks in the comments and give your reasons why.

Andrew Murray – game winning shot against st Raymond’s , fall down reverse layuP he deserves it
Isaiah cousins and mike m.(clarkstown south)
Isaiah because he led his team to a state title and he is Mr. Basketball ball
Mike m.,because he had a great year and played his best when need, last year against Horace greely and this year against everybody including mount Vernon.
for westchester although there was some competition from trawick, sky and others id give the not to isaiah as for rockland this is alot harder. for me its between peterson, mccahey, and sayre. I’m gonna go with peterson, the way he finished the year was remarkable, he probably wont win it for rockland but i think its well desrved based on his postseason performace in regionals and especially up in glens falls
max twyman from rye, he is filthy
BRENDAN HYNES from Mahopac without a doubt! An all around all star if for no other reason than he was the ONLY player who had his head and heart in the final against Mt. Vernon. He also held off Cousins well in that game.
Peterson for Rockland. Comments wouldn’t be necessary, look at what he’s done all year long.
Lynch. Played on a stress fracture and bone spurs on one foot and severely sprained ankle other foot. On half a Leg no one could guard him. Watch for a healthy next year.
BASHKIM RUGOVA
Westchester/Putnam
Probs Has The Most Heart In All Of Section One. I Don’t Care Who Is The Best Who Won Section 1, But Most Of You Commentators And Writers Didn’t Know About Carmel, Not One Of You Had Faith And Still Don’t. He Put This Carmel Team On The Map. Forget Mt Vernon, Forget All The Rest, Carmel Didn’t Come Out Of One Persons Mouth Till This Year. This Kid Never Gave Up, Never Held His Head Low When A Losing Streak Was Happening, Not Once Did He Put The Season Away And Wrap It Up.
Cousins should win it for Westchester and McCahey for Rockland. I think Peterson is a very good player and he had a great weekend in the States, but the award is for the whole year. Not one weekend. Peterson did not have anywhere near as good a year as McCahey, or even Sayre. You could even make the case that O’shea was the MVP for Tappan Zee for the whole year. I agree with Haywood that McCahey’s consistency throughout the whole year and especially in the County Center when he had a great game against Mount Vernon in a near upset is enough for him to win the award.
Brendan Hynes of Mahopac is my choice. I believe be got League MVP. He played the entire post-season with an injury to his shooting hand. His stats say enough. Not only is he a great basketball player, he is an incredible all-around athlete!
In Rockland I really think it could be co-players of the year.
McCahey and Sayre.
Petersen had a weekend up in Glen Falls every high school kid dreams of, but he wasn’t as consistent all year, like McCahey and Sayre.
Rockland:
1 Sayer
2 McCahey
3 Peterson/O’Shea
Sky Williams won the state championship and had one heck of a season.
I wouldn’t be opposed to a co-player of the year in Rockland. Sayre and McCahey both deserve it.
westchester: cousins but wouldnt be mad if you gave it sky williams cuz he put up some good numbers
rockland: mike mccahey, but if not him then pat peterson
i understand petterson had an amazing state torny but this isn’t the post season player of the year award…throughout the year he was shadowed by o’shea and letiza and he play awful against byram hills in a game they won by 1 or 2 (6 points)...they lose that game he’s not even in the discussion
Can’t pick Trawick—didn’t show up in his biggest game.
Everyone is saying Peterson for Rockland. Why? He had one huge game all season. McCahey and Sayre both had all around better years. Peterson and Letizia are the glue to that team, but O’Shea was their best player this year.
MEGA,MEGA,MEGA,GOT MINE GET YOURS,LLOOLL
TO BE FAIR:
MAKE BOTH CO-MVPS
SLY WILLIAMS AND ISAIAH COUSINS
MIKE MCAHEY AND TYLER S.
BEST WAY
Sky vs Cousins for Westchester i couldn’t even put up a legit argument for anyone else. Sky clearly had the best statistical year of any player, won a state championship and played on team that would have made it to the counter center in A. they dont get the full credit they deserve because they play in C but they beat plenty of really good teams in AA, A and B. With that said Cousins is still a better player than Sky. Overall though Cousins is clearly the best player in Westchester. Doesnt have Sky’s stats but he plays for the best program in NY, plays the toughest schedule and is in general just an amazing player.
WoW, I told everyone that Sky Williams would win cuz i trained him! They give MR.Basketball to Cousin and player of the year to Sky… Who votes for these awards. Eyedatiger-focus training:) HOOAH! WHAT!
Fred Bowers and Reece Williams from Woodlands are still very underrated . Williams and Bowers played against each other in the CYP tournament championship and they still dont get enough recognition. Nobody else worth talking about from Westchester was in that game but Jarell Marshall from Mt. Vernon who teamed up with Bowers.
