After 21 season as head coach, Dave Moskowitz has resigned at Pelham.
The veteran coach announced his decision last week and ha informed his team. When reached by phone this week, Moskowitz said he stepped down for personal reasons. He declined when asked to elaborate further.
Pelham athletic director Joe DelVecchio has already announced his retirement effective at the end of the school year. Moskowitz said DelVecchio’s retirement was not a factor in his resignation.
Moskowitz was the third longtime Section 1 football coach to resign this offseason. Hastings coach Joe Vaccaro stepped down shortly after the end of the season. He was replaced by former Dobbs Ferry coach Chris Wagner. Brewster coach Don Polverari stepped down to spend more time with his family.

Question:
Do they stay in house or do they go outside ?
I heard Dom Narsico from Somers is on the market. Pelham should approach him with the job. Great guy great leader and will get the Pelham kids into shape.
The job should go to Chris Halstead. He’s their DC.
Josh what about Brewster, I believe that job is still open.
The Brewster guy was junk he should of resigned. He let his players run there mouths and created a unnecessary rivalry between Somers. Somers arch rivals was Yorktown and JFK never Brewster. He also had talented players but couldn’t Coach them to there potential and that why they had bad season.
Anyone know who the other candidates for the Hastings job were? And are they still on the market for this job?
Chris Halstead has been a longtime & loyal coach at Pelham. He was defensive Coordinator at Stepinac for many years, coach at Greenwich before returning to his alma mater to coach at Pelham.
Chris is the right man for the job.
I hear Jorge Veintimilla, long time assistant at Sleepy is available!
halstead has only been at pelham for 4 years. he would have to somewhat change to be a head coach. he does not work pelham
lil pel,
There are plenty of successful coaches that don’t work in the school they coach at. Coach Halstead has an extensive resume. Additionally, he played at Pelham.
Just read this on the Twitter feed above: LoHudInsider Brewster hired its varsity baseball coach, Ed Mulvihill, as its new football coach. Mulvihill was approved at a board meeting last night
samoa sammy, his over the top personality is good as a motivator most of the time but hes not at pratice 100% of the time and there have been times where he shows up barely before a game starts, cant do that as a head coach. pelham defensive scheme is very simple. hes resume does not predict a great head coach.
Shame for Pelham. I though the HC did a good job this past year with feeding the rock more to Stallworth(my advice before the 2011 season
) . Dont think Pelhamewill ever have enough Horses to compete with the Big Dogs of Class A, but they did a good job in 2011!
PS. Kind of odd for a Coach to be showing up just before game time. Dont even think it would be allowed at the Youth level.
Hastings hired the guy who ran Dobbs Ferry into the ground? What a spectacularly bad hire…...but this is the school who kept Hurlie on for years after it was apparent he could not beat a coach who had equal talent.
Wagner was terrible at Dobbs. He came in as a career .500 coach and brougth a powerhouse down to his mediocre level. took the new guy no time to turn the program back around…..this is what happens when you have a kid as your athletic director
Was Dave a PE teacher? is there a teaching job attached?
fresnobob, moskowitz is a social studies teacher.
just a fact, with a new coach anything can happen down the road. pelham’s youth program is getting better and moskowitz always lost players when they went to varsity. They will have won a section by the time my hair turns gray
Congrats to Coach Moskowitz on a successful career at Pelham. Moving forward, having coached with Chris Halstead at Stepinac under Coach O’D, best wishes on applying for the Pelham job.
They should definitely go outside for their next head coach. Plenty of quality candidates out there
Congrats. to coach M on 22 years of coaching, that is a very long time and takes a lot of commitment that most people on this blog have no idea about. Good luck and enjoy the downtime.
I suggest Domnic Narcisco for the Pelham job. He done a good job as a assistant under coach dematteo. He does deserve the Somers football coach when Dematteo retires but will never get it. It be a wise hiring by Pelham to approach Domnic Narcisco with the job. He will bring success to Pelham.
How about if the Somers guy is intrested in the job he head down to Pelham and apply?
Dom, I mean Sugar, I mean Dom, don’t lobby the blog, just apply for he job and impress he hiring committee, not us bloggers!
Fjd40, name the “plenty of quality candidates out there”
I suggest Prince Purple Reign for the Pelham job!!!!
PS – this is not Prince..
There is a nice group of late 20s early 30s coaches in the area that are about to step into a lot of jobs. Between the assistants in schools such as Mamarineck, Somers, stepinac, Pleasantville, Yorktown, fox Lane, Sleepy Hollow, and Westlake, there can be a nice group of young coaches who can step into replace those who are retiring. The problem is, some districts are not willing to give a shot to a first time head coach.
Frank, what you say would seem to make sense even without knowing who potential candidates could be that there are qualified guys out there. I like your idea of a late 20’s early 30’s guy stepping in aka Nyack style. Too many old guys out there doing this. Younger guys might relate better to current players and guide these players better towards better decisions after HS.
If I was Pelham AD, I would look for a younger guy from a successful program ie. Iona, New Ro, North Rock, Harrison, Rye and even Stepinac (
) .
Give the keys to the car and let them drive! Good luck to whoever it is.
I think section 1 ADs are beginning to go the young, first year head coach route. Nyack, Irvington, and Mamaroneck come to mind. If you’re not going to get a quality veteran coach, then you should go with the energy of youth.
I agree. And you don’t just need a young coach from an established program either. I am sure not all of the “legends of westchester coaching” came from established programs either.
Moskowitz gone because his coaches turned on him. Halstead is great as coordinator. The head job should go to the professionally polished and ready head JV coach Longobardi.
He is the one …young ane motivated…to move Pelham forward. Moskowitz should have left 10 years ago. 21 years and NOT ONE SECTIONAL TITLE. who coaches that long and has none?
I feel bad that his staff turned on him but every section 1 coach knows that he was not much to coach against.
cant’t buy me glove, the coaching staff did not turn on moskowitz. longobardi, has only been a real coach for 3 years and only became head coach because coach o retired. you cant move longobardi to varsity cause he WILL ACT like the head coach. give him 5 years at least on JV. people who have coached by him will know what im talking about
Oh yeah Glove… right on… longo the man.
everyone knows the coaches could not stand Mosk. the coaches all threatened to quit and even went to the a.d. about it.
bon voyage coach mosk… what about making roks or mags coach?
pelican nation, mags coach varisty lax so he isnt a option. i say move roks to varisty as a assitant and down the road maybe head varisty. he went to pelham, works in the middle school and lives in pelham so he would fit in greatat the top,
The coaches did turn on Moski, which is a sad thing. What will ultimately happen is that DelVecchio will hire in house, and it will go to Longobardi, who is in absolute no way able to be a head coach of a Varsity football team. His JV program has won a mere 8 games in 4 years as a head coach. In no way possible is he qualified. He will probably get the job because his Dad is the principal of the middle school, which is ridiculous. If you’ve both no anything about Pelham football, you would know that all the kids in the program hate Longobardi, and no one listens to him.
Chris Halstead should get the job,but he won’t because he does not have a job in the district. The School Board and DelVecchio should go out and hopefuly find a great coach like one that Dobbs just got, or a guy who has worked under, Garr, DeMatteo, or Direnzo. But that won’t happen.
BTW-I am a Pelham football player so I know my stuff. And to the both, I meant Glove and Nation.
Longobordi…halstead…rocks…mags….if that’s the best Pelham has in their system then they should most definitely hire from the outside. Their AD should talk with the ADs from Brewster and Hastings and see what quality coaches interviewed for those jobs and didn’t get them.
Dave did a good leave the man alone !
Del Vecchio is a lame duck AD why would they want him deciding on who get’s the job.
Look for Pelham to look outside and bring in a new culture of football in.
I heard the eldest Farrington has been making a bid to coach back in westchester. Apparently has been OC out in Hawaii or Cali. Interesting to see if he gets a shot somewhere. His alma mater shorted him. Heard he was a finalist for dobbs but they didnt even offer him an assistant. But im interested t see if this kid can make a name for himself as big as he was as a player.
breaknig news, delvecchio and longobardi sr. are both retiring so i wouldnt be so sure that they will have a big imput on the decison. and do you personally want halstead to be the new head coach?
Jeff,
I’m sure the young man you speak of will make a great coach, but it’s tough to take shots at Dobbs and their coaching staff when they just won a state title.
I do not want Halstead to be the head coach, I want Pelham to go outside of the DIstrict and find new blood and a new system. I would not mind Halstead on the defensive side, because his schemes seemed to have worked a bit. However, Pelham needs a new offense, and we want a head coach from outside of the district. A lot of kids do. But we know that, that is not going to happen because DelVecchio is a sleeze ball. He just wants the whole process to be over with, so he can retire. We want a new younger coach with a new offensive system and an overall new head coach.
Take it outside, I 100 % agree with you, and so does the Pelham football team.
Are they accepting application for those interested outside of Pelham?
breaking news, i agree with your ideas, i am just as familar with pelham football as you. and interested im not sure how to apply
Breaking news, the idea that Delvecchio is retiring this year may be the exact reason why he does hire a head coach from outside the district. He won’t be around next year to hear any criticism on his decision. A lot of guys have connections to delvecchio and Pelham that aren’t named halstead or longobordi. Dont count out any outsiders just yet.
Please all of you become educated on the situation before you talik nonsense. Especially lil pelham and breaking…..do u 2 have any idea how much time the coaches put in over in pelham. And the part about Halstead showing up rite before games is simply not true. Know what you are talking about before you spew off at the mouth
If you think anyone is going to play for longobardi then you’re kidding yourself. If you think Halstead can win, you’re kidding yourself. Should have gone out of district.
Actually, they should have gotten rid of Moskowitz 10 years ago and replaced him with Dan Callahan.
Moskowitz signs on as varsity asst at suffern (8/4)
