GAME RECAPS
Class B semifinals
Albertus Magnus 72, Croton-Harmon 44: In the Class B semifinals at the County Center, Tyler Sayre had 33 points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes to lead the second-seeded Falcons into Saturday’s championship. They will meet top-seeded Dobbs Ferry at 5 p.m. at the County Center in a rematch of last year’s championship, which was won by Albertus.
Jack Sullivan added 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Sayre had 21 of his points and Sullivan 11 of his in the first half alone as Albertus built a 37-21 lead at the break. Sayre continued to pour it on with 10 more points in the third quarter and had actually outscored Croton 31-30 as his team pulled ahead 61-30 through three quarters.
Arnell Dandridge and Sullivan defended two of Croton’s top scorers, Aaron Thompson and Ian Thom. The duo combined for 16 points on just 5-of-18 shooting. On offense, Dandridge added nine points, which were all scored consecutively in the third quarter. Pat McGuinness contributed seven points and six assists.
Wes Turner led Croton with 12 points. Thom added 11 points for the Tigers.
Dobbs Ferry 64, Blind Brook 38: In the Class B semifinals at the County Center, Eddie Ritch scored all 15 of his points in the second half to help the Eagles break open a one-point game. They outscored Blind Brook 22-6 to end the third quarter after two quick baskets had cut the Trojans’ deficit to 24-23 early in the period.
Dobbs advanced to play in the Class B championship game on Saturday at 5 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s title game. The top-seeded Eagles will play No. 2 Albertus Magnus, the defending Section 1 champ.
They will do so without leading scorer Eric Paschall, who was ejected in the fourth quarter after he was whistled for his second technical. The state rule book states that any player ejected must serve a mandatory one-game suspension. Paschall was called for the first technical in the third quarter for hanging on the rim. His second technical came after he made a basket as he was fouled. One of the game’s referees said the second technical was called for cursing.
Spencer Avalos added 11 points for Dobbs. Thomas Fleming and Paschall each scored nine points. Sam Adler had 15 points to lead No. 5 Blind Brook. Antoine Saliba added 10.

That is a really tough break for Dobbs, but I am no more confident going into this game then I was before the suspension. Dobbs is a mentally tough team who will come out and try to prove that they don’t just rely on Eric. I still expect this to be a tough, close game that Dobbs still has a chance to win. Remember Dobbs and Albertus still have the same core of players as last year and Paschall did not get major minutes. Don’t count out Dobbs!
The way that the refs dictated the outcome of the Class B playoffs is absolutly ridiculous. They called ticky tack fouls the entire BB vs. DF game and looked like they were guessing whose ball it was when it went out of bounds. Section 1 should be ashamed of the referees to give pAschall 2 techs and have him sitting out the CHAMPIONSHIP game, not a regular season game. Horrible what refs do to basketball games in Section 1. I played a few years back and it has gotten worse than ever. Dobbs should be able to appeal and get him back. The worst thing I’ve seen to DF bball since a Tuckahoe player took a dive at Mark Blunt and knocked him out of the game. Get this right Section 1, do the right thing here.
Paschall is going to look great next year in the RED, White & Blue of Stepinac. Played his last game in Rivertown.
Section1Fan…It sounds like the refs did a good job on the two technical fouls. A player, especially at the high school level, should know that they cannot hang on the rim and they cannot curse either. There is no reason to do either one. Play the game respectively and by the rules. You cannot blame the refs on some pretty stupid decisions that this individual player made. The team and the individual now suffers the consequences.
Also, I read about a player from Children’s Village who attacked a teacher. They suspended him for I think two weeks. He is now back on the team and is able to play in the next game. I think this is absolutely ridiculous! Not only should the kid should have been expelled, but he should not be back allowed on the team. If I were the coach I would let him sit on the bench or tell him to not even show up.
I don’t care how good of an athlete anyone is. Nobody deserves special treatment. Know the rules or suffer what is coming to you!

I feel no sympathy for the kid from Dobbs. Even though ive heard the first tech was a poor call he never should have been running his mouth when he is already skating on thin ice. Shows immaturity from a young star. The championship game is still going to be very close regardless of the situation. Also i believe it was a poor coaching job to even have this kid still in the game in a route of Blind Brook. Dobb’s coach should have pulled his star and could have avoided being a man down in the biggest game of the year.
Eric Paschall did not curse, he yelled and 1!!!! after he made a basket which was an And 1 call. If you have watched games recently and these past years players yell and 1 after almost every play. The call was disgraceful, and now he will lose his chance to hopefully hoist a gold ball. The first technical was even more of a disgrace than the second.
i was at the game and the tech for the dunk was a joke, it was not hanging on the rim. If it was then every dunk should be a tech. Three refs is a bigger joke, its just triple the incompetance in most cases. Warn the kid, warn the coach, the 1st rule of officiating is dont decide the contest or worse in this case the next one.
SectiononeFan,
lol, been doing that since childhood. even to try and bait an official into a call, doesn’t have the same ring when you miss though.
@Sectiononefan
According to twitter paschall cursed at the ref according to the ref….Wondering if we can get a little help to clear this up?
sectiononefan…were you right on the court? You might have heard him yell “and 1” but I’m sure thats not all he yelled
It’s one thing to get the kid thrown out of the game when it’s the regular season but its a CHAMPIONSHIP game. I was not their and have no idea what happened but from what I herd he didn’t deserve the 1st tech and people swear all the time. Was it really that bad?
As for NothinButtNet…........ ARE YOU SERIOUS????!!!!!!! Do you not have a good bone in your body? Do you have a personal vendetta against this kid? There’s a reason the kid goes to Childrens Village because it’s “a residential center for emotionally troubled youth”. I won’t mention names but when I was coaching I had numerous KIDS!!!!! who were on my team and had many issues going on outside the court. I applaud the committee for overturning this. Was the kid wrong? yes 100%!!! but sports is a great outlet for many of these kids. Taking that away may cause further things to happen including the kids whole life to sprial out of control. I feel really bad for kids that are put in this situation. Now I know nothing about his story but I bet his life isn’t like yours or mine.
He must have been doing chin ups on the rim. That’s the tech that I’m more concerned about. Kids don’t dunk on the daily in section 1 maybe these refs were a little bit power hungry? Quick to blow the whistle on the first tech? Look if the kid says something to the official or another player then T em up. Just wondering about the dunk….was it worth it? Anyone got footage? Herd it was a 2 hander.
Players on the court at the time stated all he said was “AND 1!!” , and sitting nearby i believe that is all he said. Blind Brook players also agreed it was a terrible call because then that tech should be given multiple times per games. I agree him skating on thin ice should have been smarter, but public/private school players all classes and sections scream and 1 after every play, and I doubt with that big lead he was taunting against the other team. I believe he solely wanted to get the crowd involved being the electrifying player he is. Dobbs has to to step up big time.
Bracketology….Obviously basketball isn’t an outlet for this kid if he is beating on his teachers. Why reward him and let him keep playing? Who is to say he won’t go ahead and attack another teacher tomorrow? I feel bad for these kids too, but at some point further action needs to be taken. Kids need to learn whats right and whats wrong. Oh you beat up your teacher because you have emotional trouble or other troubles…thats okay, we will just suspend you for a little bit and get you right back on the court. Thats not doing anything at all! Let him back on the team and sit him. Let him understand what he did was wrong.
There are rules for a reason. If you break the rules you suffer the consequences. We can sit here and argue, but the refs called what they called and that’s that.
Sports Guy…Simple, and well put. Some people just don’t understand lol.
I was at the game. Both calls were poor.
Last Night in New Ro,
I don’t believe Paschel is going anywhere. If he transfers to Step, he has to sit out a year…losing a year of eligibility. It would be a bad move. If he was going to go to Stepinac, he needed to enter as a Freshman. JMO.
Sports I like your attempt at trying to be partial! You can say it, Magnus will win by 20. Its ok, everyone knows you want to say it
Seriously though, with or without Paschel, AM will be hoisting the gold ball. McGuiness and Sayre have had great careers and it won’t be ending in the county center….
With regards to the kid getting tossed and now missing the game. That is complete garbage. To be ejected he needed to do something severe. I do agree that the coach should have not had him on the court, but regardless..cursing? Really. Unless it was directed at someone, let the kid gloat for a second…jeez
The fact that the teacher even went to the media about the situation is crazy and he should be fired. If the kid was suspended then I believe he sat his time. Thats like saying a criminal didn’t spend enough time in jail! Well lets throw em back in! Seriously hes a 17 year old kid let em be. Stop being foolish. I hope you never have kids and one of them goes through issues cause your just gonna have him wind up in jail. Yes sports are an outlet for kids. It actually saves a lot of kids lives.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO moderation?????
I’m making valid points here! lol
Why was Paschall even on the floor at that point with the game well in hand. Someone should pose that question to his coach. Too many coaches seem to disregard sportsmanship and attempt to run up team and individual stats. On Monday, Tuckahoe was leading by 30 late in the game and their star player was still in the game. His coach was heard asking his scorekeeper “does __ have 30 yet?” Not good in HS sports.
watch the replay of the dunk on msg. if thats a tech they should just ban all dunks. let the KIDS play and not have the refs decide championships
If paschal decides to go to stepinac will he have to sit out his junior year?
Why even say and 1??? What is it suppose to mean? The ref missed a foul or the defender fouled him and he still scored? When you are up 20+ this is taunting.. I was not at the game and didn’t see the dunk but if the kid holds onto the rim unless to protect himself or another player it is by rule a Technical foul. Not a big fan of these refs from section 1 but seems like they got this right
1) How tall is Pachcal?
2) Are there any videos of either the Dunk and hanging on the rim or the 2nd technical?
Was at the game. The refs actually called the game in the first half decently. Second half was just terrible. Foul calls just didnt make sense at all. At this stage of playoffs refs should actually try and let the kids play. Why try and control the outcome? Ass for the Paschall just see the clip on msg varsity and the answer is right there. Very questionable call. As for the DF coach having no clue per keeping the kid in the game when up by 20 points what else is new. The coach is a complete joke. Ask anyone from Dobbs and they will tell you the same.
The coach is supposed to protect his players correct!! As for the second T this is not the type of kid to trash talk anyone. Cursing at anyone is not what hes about. These refs heard wrong. Power hungry.
This team can still compete vs. Albertus M if the refs will allow it. Thats the final question. will see Saturday.
He technically held on the rim but it was still for just less than a second and you cannot make that call at this point in the season.
The dobbs players are always running their mouths, even when they are up big. I agree that the first T was terrible but he definitely yelled something and directed his comment at one of the BB players. They were up 20 with just minutes to go, why talk trash? Especially when you already have a T. It sucks that he gets suspended but I hope he learns to let his game do the talking.
Looks like the refs got it wrong. Unless he cursed the ref, he should have just given him a stern warning. Ref could have let him know the seriousness of the infraction without the second tech. Let’s not forget that 15 year olds are prone to letting emotions get the best of them. Adults need to show restraint as well.
NuthinButNet….......If u were at the game or saw what happened you would think differently, He was still on the court because there was 6 minutes left in the game and Dobbs had about a 10 to 12 point lead. Teh fact still is that section 1 refs, and especially in las nights game and the dobbs blind brook girls game, dictated the outcome. Dobbs girls got screwed and, im not saying dobbs boys got screwed but it will def change the outcomee of the class b championship game. Plus all these dobbs kid do is win, every sport they play the win games, so you never know until you lace em up, Take it to em DF
Just go to MSG Varsity and see the footage of the dunk and T. Was a terrible call. I hope he does not do a MT Vernon game. He may call 7 tech’s. Not a Dobbs fan or Magnus fan so I care care less who wins the game, just wish both teams had their best players.
All these dobbs kids do is win, what planet are you from. This is section1 class b please get a grip.
Reality…........Im not just talkin about baseketball, theyve won in football and lacrosse last year, these kids are great kids and to do somethin like this to them theyre senior year after theyve played together for their whole lives, worst decision Section 1 can make…....
The Dobbs kid who got the T was about the only “non” chippy player on the court for Dobbs and the refs seemed to want to make an example of him. I was at the game he did “NOT” hang on the rim by any stretch. Just another case of refs who think the game is about them and the fact they they are “chosen” to officiate come sectionals. I would like to see them call some Techs when MV is dunking the ball all over the place this coming weekend..
Magnus will likely win in either event but to take this kid out of the equation is a shame. How bad did Woodlands have to play to lose to Croton?? Croton was just awful yesterday, but rest assured that the Croton Coaches son will be 1st or 2nd team All State and All Tournament. He clearly would have had to of led the section in shots taken.
Let me get this straight…a high school kid is being suspended for one game for getting two technicals in a game…one of which is for hanging on the rim for s dunk that some people felt was a questionable call? If that is the case then you have got to be kidding me!!! S kid who has passed all his classes, worked hard in the off season & by all accounts is a good kid & a Ref robs him off what could be one of the most memorable moments off his childhood…they have got to be INSANE!! I figured the kid failed a class or three.
It tickles me how SOME refs inject themselves into games and become the focus point & deciding factor off the outcome of games instead of the players.
I’m sorry, but if this was my kid I would appeal it TODAY & get a quick injunction in court. This is INSANE. It’s not the job of Section 1 refs to rip out the spirit of young people. I hope this kid plays
In the nba with pro refs. if a tech if unjustified the commish can overturn, but in section 1 with part time refs. the rules are the rules.C’MON section 1 do the right thing.DO WHATS RIGHT FOR THE KIDS THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT. What kind of message is that sending, a kid who is a good student, class basketball player and a nice kid can’t play in the biggest game of his life, because he said and 1.
Matt Mezansky should have been allowed to play earlier this year after he was ejected and we didn’t think he deserved it. Why should the Dobbs player be allowed to play? Because it’s the championship so let’s look the other way? No way Section 1 overturns it. They open up a whole can of worms going forward by letting him play.
@ Eagles. Croton played a heckuva game. Wouldn’t call it Villanovian, but they took advantage of every WL miscue. By contrast, WL played pretty darn bad. I know that there are no excuses at this time of the year, but we (WL) were without our best all-around player.
