Mr. Basketball: Cousins makes it a Mount Vernon sixpeat
Following in the footsteps of his predecessors at Mount Vernon High School, 6-foot-4 senior Isaiah Cousins was named Section 1’s Mr. Basketball by the Westchester County Basketball Coaches Association.
Cousins, a three-year varsity contributors, has led the Knights to a 16-2 record and a likely top seed in the Class AA tournament. He is the sixth straight Mount Vernon player to earn the honor. The Knights run actually stretches back seven seasons: Jonathan Mitchell (2006), Michael Coburn (2007), Kevin Jones (2008), Sherrod Wright (2009), Jabarie Hinds (2010-11) and Cousins (2012).
The other top honor went to Tappan Zee coach George Gaine, who was named the section’s overall coach of the year. Fresh off the school’s only back-to-back appearances at the County Center in program history, Gaine’s team finished the regular season 18-0 and won the League 4-B title. Tappan Zee will likely earn the top seed in the Class A tournament.
The WCBCA also handed out tri-county and conference coach of the year honors. Here is the complete list of today’s winners:
MR. BASKETBALL: Isaiah Cousins, Mount Vernon
TRI-COUNTY: Mike McCahey, Clarkstown South; Tyler Sayre, Albertus Magnus; Randy Stephens, Mount Vernon; Will Trawick, Fox Lane; Sky Williams, Tuckahoe
COACH OF THE YEAR: George Gaine, Tappan Zee
CONFERENCE COACHES OF THE YEAR: Kevin Downes, Mahopac (Conference 1); Tyrone Carver, Mamaroneck (Conference 2); Chris Violante, Fox Lane (Conference 3); Matt Backs, Clarkstown South (Conference 4)

congrats to a fine baller, who will be seen a lot on tv,if you have not seen him play, you missed another fine piece to the mount vernon puzzle.
Its 7 years in a row not 6
all good…
Congratulations!
In light of all the considerable talent that is on display year after year throughout Section 1 this latest coronation of Isiah reflects not only his personal achievement but that of an amazing coach and school/community program. Congratulations to all!
That’s Class A,not Class AA,that Tappan Zee will be seeded first in…I doubt TZ would be 18-0 if they had to face Cousins and Mount Vernon!
Thanks Louie. I fixed it.
I wonder how the voting went for player of the year. It says on msg varsity that Cousins was voted just ahead of Mccahey. I would like to see what the order was from there.
Nice picture of Isaiah hooking Kyle Anderson w/ Barie in the backround from last years SNY Tourney @ LIU Brooklyn. Should have used one from the 1st WP game this yr when he had 18 in the 1st qtr & 26 by halftime. Kid can fill it up when he’s ON
haven’t heard much about Stephens this year what are his numbers like?
