PROJECTED Class A tournament bracket

Posted by: Josh Thomson - Posted in Boys Basketball on Feb 11, 2012

Unfortunately, all three of today’s games involve Class A teams, meaning there will be slight tweaks. I will try to reflect the possibilities below. The key game, ironically, does not involve any Class A teams. That’s Pleasantville-Briarcliff. If Pleasantville wins, it provides an extra bonus point for Eastchester, Sleepy Hollow and Rye. John Jay also plays Sacred Heart today and can increase its index with a win.

With that in mind, below you will find the following for Class A:

• My projected seeds
• New York state records for each team
• Bonus points, or potential bonus points, for each team
• The playoff index of each team
• A list of teams that did not qualify
• Potential playoff matchups

Of course, this is all dependent on all 25 (yes, 25!) accepting bids to the postseason.

Class A PROJECTED SEEDS —
1. Tappan Zee (18-0, +13) = 4.7222
2. Peekskill (13-4, +14) = 3.8824
3. Eastchester (14-4, +12) = 3.7778
4. Kennedy (13-5, +15) = 3.7222
5. Byram Hills (12-6, +17) = 3.6111
T6. Pelham (13-5, +11) = 3.50  (My prediction: Pelham will win tiebreaker)
T6. Saunders (13-5, +11) = 3.50
8. Pearl River (12-6, +13) = 3.3889
9. Riverside (12-5, +9) = 3.3529
10. Brewster (11-7, +13) = 3.1667
11. Poughkeepsie (11-7, +12) = 3.1111
12. Rye (8-7, +14) = 3.0667
13. Beacon (11-7, +8) = 2.8889
T14. Panas (9-9, +12) = 2.6667 (My prediction: Panas will win tiebreaker)
T14. Somers (9-9, +12) = 2.6667
16. Spring Valley (6-10, +16) = 2.50
17. Lakeland (8-10, +12) = 2.4444
T18. John Jay (7-11, +14) = 2.3333 (My prediction: John Jay will win tiebreaker, followed by Harrison)
T18. Harrison (7-11, +14) = 2.3333
T18. Lourdes (8-10, +10) = 2.3333
21. Ardsley (6-11, +10) = 2.0
22. Hen Hud (7-11, +7) = 1.9444
23. Sleepy Hollow (6-12, +10) = 1.8999
T24. Nyack (4-14, +16) = 1.7778 (My prediction: Nyack will win tiebreaker)
T24. Yonkers (4-14, +16) = 1.7778

Tiebreaker notes: The tiebreakers are up to the committee, but my predictions are… Pelham will win tiebreaker for the 6-seed over Saunders because Pelham won the league. That included two wins over Eastchester, which swept Saunders. … Panas will win tiebreaker with Somers based on a 2-0 record vs. John Jay, which Somers split with, and a 1-1 record vs. Lakeland, a team Somers lost to. … John Jay and Harrison will be seeded ahead of Lourdes based on bonus points. John Jay will then trump Harrison for the 18-seed based on common opponents. John Jay beat Pelham, which beat Harrison. … Nyack will win the tiebreaker with Yonkers based on common opponents. Nyack beat Bronxville, which swept Yonkers in-league.

Did not qualify:
Roosevelt
Port Chester
Nanuet

  1. Statesman

So many outbracket games, my goodness.

  2. PeekFatDaddy

    Josh,
Not that it matters any, but Peekskill is 14-4 after last night’s win over Yorktown. You might not have factored in the makeup game they won over Sacred Heart last Monday.

  3. Rock ball

Not that it really matters, but with Nyack’s win over Bronxville, aren’t they ahead of Yonkers b/c Bronxville beat Yonkers. Also, does any know what happened in the John Jay or Briarcliff games?

  4. PeekFatDaddy

Poughkeepsie is a very dangerous 11 Seed on the road too. Could take one of the top seeds out of the County Center.

  5. Statesman

    Peek,

The 11 is a great place to be. Hiding away from the heavy hitters. Gotta win the 11/22 matchup first so there are no guarentees. Peek got a nice draw, under the radar a great year.

  6. hoops 2013

    4. Eastchester (14-4)

    5. Byram Hills (12-6)
    T6. Saunders (13-5)
    T6. Pelham (13-5)

Eastchester, Pelham and Saunders are all beatable. That league was a joke this year. Very weak “A” League with Sleepy, `Roosevelt and Lincoln

Poughkeepsie & Brewster has to be even or favored over Saunders/Pelham.
Byram Hills already been beaten twice Rye
and Eastchester could lose to Beacon.

    Roosevelt and Lincoln

  7. lefty

Peekskill’s gotta be rooting for Pleasantville tonight. they would need to get through this to get to the final; Somers, Pelham/Saunders, Eastchester (or maybe Poughkeepsie?) ... that with TZ, BH, Kennedy and Pearl River battling each other out on the other side would be a very favorable draw.

  8. Dazed and Confused

I don’t understand how Kennedy has the same amount of wins and more bonus points then Peekskill and ends up 2 seeds lower… Shouldn’t Peekskills “non NYS federation” game be held against them then favor them? System looks a little flawed to me…

  9. Isaac

    Peekskill has 14 wins

  10. Mahopac Maniac

Mahopac is going back to the CC!!! You can bet on that!!!

  11. Dazed and Confused

    @issac only 13 count

  12. indians nation

What happens with Nyack? Who do they face in the outbracket?

  13. hoops 2013

Saunders and Riverside, two upset victims

    BOth played whack Schedules

  14. Josh Thomson

Peek…As it says at the top of the post, these are NY records only. That’s all that counts for Peekskill and the others. The win over Athens is not factored in. Athens is from Pa. 13-4 is correct.

indians nation… Bronxville swept Yonkers. Nyack beat Bronxville. I would tend to agree with you. It would then bump Nyack over Yonkers. However, that’s a committee decision. It’s up to them.

Dazed… Peekskill’s game is held against it, technically. Peekskill actually won one more game than Kennedy, but that win doesn’t count. The difference b/w the two is slight, but it lies in the divisor. Both have 13 wins, multiplied by 4 points. That’s 52 points. Peekskill has 14 bonus points, Kennedy has 15. But Peekskill’s 66 points are divided by 17 games. Kennedy’s 67 points are divided by 18. Peekskill’s index turns out to be higher.

  15. class a fan

    what are the match-ups josh?

  16. Bracketology

@Peek I agree and as of right now I have Poughkeepsie going to the county center. They are on the weakest side of the bracket with playing Hen Hud, then Saunder or Pelham (depending on committee decision), then Eastchester.

Statesman the 11/22 matchup will be a joke if its Hen Hud Poughkeepsie. Hen Hud played in the weakest league in section 1 and Poughkeepsie is very hard to beat @ home.

@Hoops 2013 your saying everything I’m thinking lol

@Dazed the system is def flawed lol but in reality it won’t matter I don’t see anyone beating Kennedy or Peekskill until they get to the county center.

  17. Josh Thomson

    class a fan… I updated them.

  18. haywood

    Final four-A

    TAPPAN ZEE

  20. jetsstink

Mark it down now….Poughkeepsie Tappan Zee final. I ll go with Pioneers.

  21. bball

    Kennedy-Byram will be nuts.

  22. Statesman

    Jets,

Talk about the luck of draw. What happened last week no longer matters. That kind of mentality should help our boys.

Sidebar: It’s Stateman Griffey Jr’s. 24th B-Day. I’ve been blessed to have known you for 19 of those years. God Bless you and your family. Much love.

  23. bball

    Peekskill-Kennedy final

  24. B-Ball IQ

Looking forward to “A” quarters over “AA”. Any early upset preditions anyone?

  25. haywood

    STATESMAN,

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE TICKLED PINK OVER YOUR CHANCES AT GETTING TO THE COUNTY CENTER.

LAST YEAR I WANTED TO SEE NEW RO VS POK IT HAPPENED,THIS YEAR I WANT TO SEE PEEKSKILL VS POUKEEPSIE,EARLY IN THE YEAR I ASKED,WHEN DOES POK PLAY PEEK,EITHER YOU OR PEEKFATDADDY SAID,THEY WILL ONLY PLAY EACH OTHER IN THE PLAYOFFS,WELL I GOT MY FINGERS CROSSED,GOOD LUCK STARTS WITH THE SEEDINGS,YOU COULD NOT HAVE DREAMED OF THE MATCH UPS,YOU GOTTA BE DROOLING,LLLOOOLLL

  26. haywood

    STATESMAN,

I ASKED EARLY IN THE YEAR,WHEN DO PEEK AND POK PLAY,EITHER YOU OR PEEKFATDADDY SAID ,ONLY IF THEY MEET IN THE PLAYOFFS,WELL HOPEFULLY BOTH TEAMS KEEP THEIR ENDS OF THE BARGAIN,IT WILL BE A GREAT FINAL 4 MATCH UP

  27. Statesman

    Wood,

It was both of us. It would be a great one but first things first. Peek is playing for respect and Pok has a boneterpick b/c of the game being ppd.

  28. Statesman

Gotta add a PK/PK final 4 game would be a nice throwback to the Class B days.

  29. Bracketology

    Outbracket games to watch:

No. 20 Our Lady of Lourdes at No. 13 Beacon
Both teams have seen each other twice this year with both teams winning on their home court. Lourdes was up by 6 with a minute and a half to go @ Beacon but couldn’t win. Beacon has one of their starters back but this game is gonna be really close…..well caz is Beacon/Lourdes…..

This games interesting caz Beacon played a weak non league schedule and Lourdes played against Kennedy in there first game of the year and was up 3 at the half. Would be really interesting if Lourdes win caz I don’t think Kennedy wants to see them again.

I’ll take Beacon at home though. Beacon 60 Lourdes 57

  30. Bracketology

No. 21 Ardsley at No. 12 Rye

This games only interesting caz were all pretty sure Rye will win….. the real question is can Rye do it again? Beat the defending champs 3 times in one year? Not really sure if they will but I like them in this home game

    Rye 54 Ardsley 36

  31. section1 A

Pelham is a dangerous team.. remember they lost by 3 against fox lane in OT.. note: fox lane is number 2 in AA. Henson, Stokes, and Stallworth could do damage in the playoffs along with Miller getting rebounds.

  32. Bracketology

No. 18 John Jay at No. 15 Somers

This is cool caz again we have two teams that played in the same league playing each other again. I’m a big fan in teams that are getting hot down the stretch….... Somers is one of them. I don’t think they have much of a chance against Peekskill but just look at Somers….... THERE HUGE!!!!! I won’t be suprised if they give Peekskill a good game but I would be shocked if they lost on the outbracket game at home against a league rival.

Somers 63 John Jay CR 50

  33. section1 AB

A pelham-eastchester game could be one of the best playoff games if they both make it past the 1st round. Very interesting games between the two.

  34. Bracketology

@Section 1 A Pelham is getting healthy at the right time and they are starting to mesh really well. It’s just gonna be a really tough game for them to beat Poughkeepsie in the 1st Round. I just don’t think anyone wanted to see Poughkeepsie on their side of the bracket lol

  35. Bracketology

on another note….. talk about a brutal raod to the county center…... Tappan Zee!!!! They may have to play both Spring Valley and Pearl River to make to back to the CC….... Thats gonna be hard

  36. B-Ball IQ

    Great info Bracket

  37. haywood

IF THERE IS A TEAM THAT CAN,CLIMB MOUNTAINS,AND GET THROUGH HELL WITH GASOLINE DRAWS ON IT’S TAPPAN ZEE

  38. Bracketology

@Wood hahah your right they pretty much been through it all this year and still hasent lost…... yet lol

  39. haywood

    BRACKETOLOGY,

IF LYNCH IS CLOSE TO 90% THEY CAN GIVE TAPPAN ZEE ALL THEY CAN HANDLE,I THINK BYRAM WILL BEAT KENNDY

  40. haywood

    A FINAL,

REPEAT OF CHRISTMAS AT THE COUNTY

    BYRAM HILLS VS POUKEEPSIE

  41. haywood

    Isaiah cousins- Mr basketball

  42. BBDad

    Bracketology

Somers is Huge. 6’7, 6’7 and 6’8. Their problem is their coach is TERRIBLE!! He never plays his bigs together and has his 6’8 center play 15-20ft from the basket. No post up game at all. They have some talent and with a good coach could have been a 6 or 7 seed. Can cause some problems for higher seeds in 2nd or maybe 3rd round.

  43. urcrazy

Pok will not make it to the CC. No chance. No chance!

  44. Jeff P.

Sorry to hear your team missed the playoffs, urcrazy…

  45. HRs

If you really think TZ’s road is hard to get to the center you haven’t watched Rockland basketball at all this year. Spring Valley couldn’t stay within 30 last year and they were 10X’s better. TZ will smack them. Pearl River will not back down, but they don’t have the horses..plain and simple. They play a very similar style of basketball but this year TZ has better players, better shooters and is more physical. TZ is not going to get knocked out here either. County center they may lose, but they WILL get there.

  46. jetsstink

    States,

Happy 24th, wow. Enjoy your day and please know how proud our whole community is of you and your accomplishments. You ve always been one of my favorite smith school legends. haha

Section nine favorites had tough week this week as AA Kingston lost to NFA, A favorite Red Hook lost to a young FDR team, then Red Hook rebounded and blew out Class C favorite Pine Plains. No one is beating Burke who just beat Stepinac. Burke ought to be moved up, they are playing Christ the King latter this week.

  47. Josh Thomson

Happy B-day, Statesman! One of my favorites. Enjoy!

  48. Statesman

Thanks a lot Jets. Means a lot to hear, I’ll keep pushing. Bracketology can never be an exact science so it’ll be interesting to see how it pans out.

Josh, I’m def enjoying. Thanks for the shout out!

  49. HRs

States happy bday! Enjoy this one and many more.

  50. confused

Will Pok play Sleepy or HH? The info seems confusing.

  51. Jeff P.

Oh, and before I forget: Happy 24th birthday, Statesman. Hope you enjoyed your special day…

  52. Bracketology

@HR’s I never said they wouldn’t be there. Just said the road is not easy. No matter who your playing it’s hard to beat the same team three times in a year.

@BBDad I’m not sure how to respond to that. I feel that no coaches are TERRIBLE!!!! in high school especially at this level. I’m not sure if I would play all three at the same time if one of them couldn’t play a wing. But overall your right they could be a problem down the road.

@urcrazy yes PK isn’t the same team as last year but if your just going by the two games at the CC over Christmas break there a much better team now. Watch out for those Dutchess County teams lol. Arlington has a good shot in AA to make it to the CC.

  53. HRs

Bracket the 3 time thing would hold true if there wasn’t an overall difference in talent on the floor. TZ is clearly better. In Section 1(especially this year) the 3 X situation falls flat. Look at MV, do you think if they play White Plains, New Ro, Gorton or whoever they would struggle cause they played them twice prior?

Look anything can happen, and I totally see what you are saying, but if TZ loses it won’t have anything to do with playing PR 3 times. It will have to do with Clinton and Otoole going off and hitting 3s at an alarming rate. The game planning and prep can only go so far….

Either way good luck to all A teams. Hoping for a great tourney.

  54. Josh Thomson

I generally agree with HRs. I’ve never understood that saying in sports. Usually, if a team wins the first two it is better.

I think TZ would enter a potential QF with Pearl River very confident. Having said that, I think TZ could have drawn more favorable matchups in the QF.

  55. Section one bball

Brewster making it to the county center??

  56. Josh Thomson

confused… Poughkeepsie would play Hen Hud. I had originally had Sleepy with one too many bonus points. Taking one away bumped Sleepy down below Hen Hud.

  57. HRs

Josh well said and were are in big time agreement with you saying “Usually, if a team wins the first two it is better.”

Question for you, JFK vs Byram(With a healthy Lynch) who wins and why?

  58. Josh Thomson

In that hypothetical scenario, I’d take Byram. But I’m not sure he’s healthy.

I have already thought about this though. The schedule will definitely help. Byram will play Friday, then Tuesday. That’s a decent amount of rest. If you go back and look, he’s always played well with rest.

  59. HRs

As much as I feel JFK can win it all, the seedings have not fallen the way I would have liked. Either way, I am sticking with my pick and this is why. Lynch is not healthy and won’t be for quite some time. He is a tough kid and is going to gut it out the rest of the year. Love the kid, but hes a shell of himself right now.

In our hypothetical match up, healthy Byram wins, now not so much. The guard position doesn’t become such a mismatch now. The big mismatch is down low. No one on Byram can stop the Theo. He is going to have free reign . If they are forced to double him, the guards are going to bang 3’s. Add in the monstrous chip on their shoulder from last year and I go JFK. I hope this game happens!!

  60. AMHS

TZ will coast into the cc, the only team that can beat them is bh if lynch is healthy. TZ will run peek and pok right out of the gym this year, there defense is to good and they will get wide open looks on offense

  61. Josh Thomson

AMHS… I think Peekskill could beat TZ as well.

  62. Statesman

Thanks a lot Jeff and HRS. I really appreciate it.

We’ll see for certain how things will pan out later today.

  63. Pelham

What is the news out Pelham? I am hearing thangs….

  64. Statesman

Pelham vs. Pok/Hen Hud winner. See Josh’s *“OFFICIAL”* Rankings thread.
