Section 1′s league and overall standings

Posted by: Josh Thomson - Posted in Boys Basketball on Feb 10, 2012

The regular season is nearing its close, so I thought it’d be worthwhile to take a look at the league races this morning. Several are over and some league titles can be won tonight or tomorrow.

Congrats to the following teams, which have already clinched league championships:

League 1-B — Mahopac
League 1-D — Pawling
League 2-A — Tuckahoe
League 2-B — Mount Vernon
League 2-C — Dobbs Ferry/Woodlands
League 2-D — Pelham
League 4-A — Clarkstown South
League 4-B — Tappan Zee

Here’s a look back at my league-by-league predictions, which weren’t bad. (Better than my weekly picks, that’s for sure.)

Perhaps the most interesting league race has been League 3-B. I picked a three-way tie for first back in early January. Briarcliff and Pleasantville will determine just how smart I am tomorrow night at Pace. The Bears can clinch the league crown for themselves with a win, but a Pleasantville win would bring Croton in on a three-way tie.

Like Briarcliff, Poughkeepsie and Blind Brook control their own destiny. Both can clinch outright league titles tonight. Peekskill and Byram Hills have to win to earn shares of the titles in their leagues.

OK, enough introduction. Here’s a look at the current league standings, including overall records for every team in the section. If you see any mistakes, shoot me an e-mail to let me know at jthomson@lohud.com.

Look for Isaiah cousins to put on a show,on senior day,if you are a new RO fan, shut the window, pull the blinds down and hit the light switch, the party is over.

  2. Statesman

    I love the haywood-isms

  3. spacecadet

rumor is Uconn in the house..adds a little more fuel to the fire.

  4. Reality Check

Hey Wood: Let’s not Gloat & antagonize. Let the kids do the talking today. Per BC’s tweet Colorado, Nova & UCONN are paying visits to 100 Cali

  5. dcballa

Actually Beacon is also 7-3 not 6-4. (losses to Pok, OLL, Arlington once) Their other loss to AHS was in the DC Holiday tourney and was not a league game.

  6. Statesman

    Balla,

You are correct. If Pok loses tonight, we’ll have tri-champions in the north country b/c they all have split w/ each other.

  7. CT Hoops 1

On a side note- Dajuan Coleman is the only player out of NY invited to the McDonald’s All American game.

Can anyone really matchup with JD in class A? harborfields?

  8. Statesman

I have no idea who League 1-A’s MVP will be. A lot of balanced players in that league as you can see from the parity in the league standings. Maybe Jarell Brown from Beacon can get the nod.

  9. Cuse

JD will be tough. The also have a 6’10 kid going to Wake Forest. Their guard play is not good however. They have struggled at times this year and not as good as last year. Hearing this second hand. Harborfields played a great schedule and hung in there. Would be interesting.

    JOSH,

WITHOUT A DOUGHT,YOUR BEST PICK WAS TYRONE CARVER FOR COACH OF THE YEAR,HE HAS LIFTED THAT PROGRAM,AND BEATING NEW RO AND WHITE PLAINS BACK TO BACK IS NO EASY CHORE.

    I HOPE HE GETS IT.

  11. strong island

L.I. lutheran are the returning federation champs. They can definately beat j.d.

  12. CT Hoops 1

Good call strong island. Almost forgot about them.

Will be interesting to see what Section 1 can do against these powerhouses seeing as we really haven’t seen any A teams really play any stiff comp outside the area.

  13. haywood

playoff time,mv rock”in rims in the big house 79-52,mv over new ro

  14. Statesman

Crazy that MV started slow and still won by nearly 30. Then again, why am I not surprised.

  15. Statesman

Pok 14 Ketcham 9 after 1. Pok call ups and bench getting love.

  16. Statesman

Pok 61 RCK 37. Well done league Champs.

  17. CDD

Once again josh, Your lack of respect for a small dutchess county team shows..as you picked pawling next to last, but indeed they won the league with ease…need to expand your horizons….its not their fault they have to play westchester teams…...you need to follow ALL the teams in section one not just westchester teams…you do the same thing in football also

  18. Josh Thomson

CDD… Pawling and the rest of the teams in Dutchess County are in the Poughkeepsie Journal coverage area. I try to find out what I can about teams in that area but they won’t receive the same level of coverage on this blog. Our paper’s coverage area consists of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties.

  19. Po-Town

States-Poughkeepsie poured it on in the second half as they should’ve. It was a bit of a shame though the way the parents were acting. Not as classy as Laffin and the team.I could understand student cheering sections getting on the opponents but didn’t expect it from the parents. It was awkward to witness. Good luck in Sectionals.

  20. Statesman

    Po Town,

It happens, hopefully they can tone it down and let the boys play. Thanks!

  21. pk

Great job keeping the Pok team together. After the start they had they could have easily fallen apart earlier this season. Statesman – why were they able to keep it together?

  22. Statesman

    PK,

Laffin is a great man who puts the kids first. His love is reflected in the way the kids buy in on the court and off. Young team that came together. Adversity breeds great results. Thr Pioneers also have a nice volunteer staff who go above and beyond the call of duty. All some kids need is someone that believes in them, this Pioneer team is truth of that.

Looks like they may be paired w/ Saunders as I thought will happen. Saunders is a great team, but the schedule Pok endured makes it a winnable game de facto.

  23. pioneers

Statesman, Great points! Pok has great leadership at the top. The kids were excited about winning the league. They played inspired in the second half.

  24. Statesman

    Pioneers,

Thank you. I bet the league not coming easy this year had a lot to do w/ the excitement. They worked hard to get this done. Well deserved.

Hopefully that inspired ball leaks into the post-season!

  25. jmoose

    States,

NFA back on top of section 9 rankings. It appears that the benchings after the PK game may have lit a fire. LJ scurlock taking over games, dropped 28 on Kingston and 31 on middletown last night.

Should be a competitive sec 9 tourney.

Good luck to PK in sectionals!

Believe it or not this years NFA squad has a combined 84 average in the classroom. Extremely proud of my boys at this point.
