Thursday’s roundup: Tuckahoe completes unbeaten season
A night after Tappan Zee finished off the same achievement, Tuckahoe completed a perfect regular season at 18-0. The Tigers beat Greenburgh Academy 112-34 today, clinching the League 2-A title at 9-0 in the process.
Tuckahoe is every bit as good as its record and list of accomplishments indicates. The Tigers have as many as seven games remaining. No doubt they are good enough to win all of them.
I’m off today, but there’s another game to mention and a new name to introduce. My new colleague, former Croton football player Chris Perez, went to cover Lakeland and Panas today. Lakeland earned revenge off Saturday’s loss at Panas in the Giglio Games. The Hornets won 55-42 behind 17 points from Alex Perlman.
Lakeland grabbed control of the game early on, but Panas rallied on the strength of a 14-4 run to cut its deficit to three going into the fourth. Zac Pruess and Jimmy Jackson each had four points during the burst, but it was Perlman who shined down the stretch. He scored 11 of his 17 points in the period.
“We wanted revenge,” Perlman told Perez. “It’s a great rivalry where any given night any team can win, but there was no way we were losing on our court.”
Congrats to Tuckahoe on its accomplishment and thanks to Chris for covering the game in my stead. Here’s the rest of tonight’s results:

“The Tigers beat Greenburgh Academy 112-34 today”
How can a score like that ever be justified, wow.
What a game over at Brewster! It was a back and forth type of game. Refs weren’t bad either, except for no 3 second calls throughout the whole night. Clearly there was lol. Either way, great game by both teams. Go Carmel!
Pok defeats Lourdes tonight. If they win at at RCK tmrw they win the league outright and hit 11 wins. Not bad after graduating 10 seniors from a 22-1 team. If they lose, Beacon, Arlington and Pok are tri champs all splitting their season series’ and will have 3 losses. Bizarre.
gimme a stick… Tuckahoe’s a bit of a different case. The Tigers only have 8 or 9 players and they’re all pretty good.
I think tuckahoe shouldn’t play like these school, the’re should be in either tougher league or play tougher schedule
So the top 3 seeds for B will likely come down to tomorrows Woodlands vs Fox Lane game. If Fox Lane wins AM will be 1 and Dobbs 2. With a win from Woodlands, Dobbs will collect enough bonus points to move ahead of AM, the Falcons will move to number 2 and Woodlands will likely be the 3. Very interesting.
I don’t care how many players tuckahoe has you don’t win like that slow the ball down use the shot clock that is just pitiful
Coach, I completely agree! That score is ridiculous
It’s been that kind of a season, Statesman… Score was 49-31 in favor of Poughkeepsie…. Noticed that WIlliams (not sure of the first name) has been called up from the JV for the Pioneers and saw significant PT tonight… Also saw a couple of guys from Tappan Zee scouting the game…
And now, the second season begins…
Teams that win that way often struggle when the pace is slowed up during the post season. They seem to be on a collision course w/ w Pine Plains team looking for revenge thay plays 5 kids 6’3 and taller all with decent handles and game. Hope they meet up, that’ll be great.
Jeff,
Did he have a mini fro? I think his name is Maleek, not to be confused w/ the forward Maleek R who has been up all season.
TZ in the building? Very flattering, Pok would have their work cut out to even meet up w/ them.
I would love to see Dancy & Lawerence put together a game when they’re both on
Also, I hope Beacon takes care of Riverside tmrw. Don’t like the 6/11 matchup w/ JFK one bit.
Pk,
Throw Anderson and Carter in there and it’s a party!
Josh, 78 points is a tad too much. Run some offense, take no threes, keep the fouls to a minimum, keep the clock going, play some kids out of position. Hope karma comes back to bite ‘em.
Here is the box score from the Tuckahoe game…are you kidding me!!!!! The game was obviously over mid way through the 2nd quarter. I wasn’t even at the game and could tell you that. There is no reason to keep running it and running it. Show some respect for your opponent.
14—-
4—-7——-929—
30—22—-31Statesman, the player did indeed have a “mini-fro” so I’m guessing it’s Maleek Williams… Also noticed that Arlington beat Beacon 68-59 on the Bulldogs’ home court, which gives Beacon a 10-7 record. Can’t find a score for the second John Jay-EF/Ketcham rivalry game, though; if Ketcham (3-13 record heading into the game) lost, it will miss out on the Section 1 Class AA Tournament. Again.
Jeff,
Got you. He was #3 on JV. HRS mentioned that he could play Varsity now after NFA. Very good slasher, I’d like for him to work on his perimeter game during the off-season. He’s a nice finisher but don’t want to see his layups get pinned to the glass. I forgot that Pok is bringing back their entire team sans two players so they’ll be competition for minutes.
Good to see Westlake beat Ossining as they seem to have lot of close losses, losing in OT or late in 4th quarter. They seem to be much more competitive than they were past few years.
“The Tigers beat Greenburgh Academy 112-34 today”
what a bunch of hot dogs. never even heard of greenburgh academy.
Josh,
Now way to defend 112-34. I don’t care how many good players they have. Good luck to whoever plays Tuckahoe. Classless!!
Didn’t they do the same thing last year in the playoffs, scoring 100 on the last possession?
I suppose taking a knee is respectful to an opponent?? That is the biggest insult a team can possibly throw at an opponent, essentially saying “You are not good enough for us to play normally, so we’ll treat you like little kids”. Sorry, I’d rather suffer the blowout with a shred of dignity left.
Not taking a knee but do not press, pick them up near three point line, runs couple of passes before shooting, have your subs take most of shots, work your half court offense which as you get deeper in playoffs with evenly matched teams will be important. These are all things that coaches have done for years. You are not lettign them score but not overwhelming and embarassing them either. Everyone walks aways with their doignity intact especailly the winning coach. Mount Vernon could easily beat most of their league opponents by 80 points but show some class and they manages to play well and win by large margins without purposely humilating anyone.
bclass… I don’t want to continue to defend Tuckahoe because I do agree with some of the comments on here, but it’s different with Tuckahoe than Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon has 15 or 16 players. When Cimmino subs in the last five players on his bench and Murphy or Mayfield have in players 6-10, New Ro and White Plains have equal or better players on the floor. Tuckahoe has 8 or 9 players, meaning Nos. 4-8 or 5-9 are on the floor. Those players are probably good enough to win the Class C title this year. Mount Vernon’s bottom 5 would be good, but would not be the best team in Class AA.
tuckahoe has done it all year to poor teams. i totally agree with the comment about mt vernon, they play with class under coach cimmino. i recently watched mt vernon play. i knew they were excellent but what impressed me most was their discipline and the way they responded to their coach. that is the true sign of a championship team. you dont have to beat a team by 78 pts to establish your team. playing with class and respecting your opponent is a better indicator of a great team.
Agree Mt. Vernon different from Tuckahoe but been around basketball a lot as an adult and in my youth. If it was 112-62 that would be OK as loser can score a little or 80-34 OK as held down some but in my view, unless the losing team is tripping on their shoelaces every time walking up the court the whole game there is never a need to push it to get over 100 if your opponent can not even break 40. Maybe someone from Tuckahoe can post game tape online so we can all see how they played it.
I was at the game…it was senior day and probably the last time they will play on their home court. I fully understand how people think that it was over the top. I was there and the coach did sit the starters most of the game, even though it was their last game. As far as playing the game there are two point I want to bring up. Tuckahoe plays its own style of game and they will win or lose by playing that style. I don’t think they should have changed there game for any reason, even if they were blowing a team out. The starters were not trying that hard and subs were wanting to get their points and practice their game as well. they were passing the ball but they were still playing defense, do you want them to stop defending too? The second point I bring up is that it would insult the opposing team if they just stop defending and let the other team score at will. The other team only had 6 kids and only 1 was good enough to start on a different team. Tuckahoe tried to schedule harder games all year. They beat 2 AA, 5 A, and 2 B teams, go ask those teams how Tuckahoe is. Other than asking the other coach to throw the white towel I don’t know what else could have been done.
Josh,
Remember those words that THS has 8 or 9 good players, is that why they haven’t been ranked in your weekly top ten this year. I’ve seen THS play twice this year and their second team would struggle mightily against any good competition. Maybe Coach should watch Hoosiers and learn how to pass the ball around and then shoot instead of running and gunning in a game that’s out of control. He sat next to coach Comminio all those years what did he learn. What’s the AD say and the Principal have to say? So much for promoting good sportsmanship.
JOSH DON’T STICK UP FOR THE WRONG MESSAGE WINNING BY 50 and 78 POINTS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN AND YOU KNOW IT.
Blame goes to the officials as well I’ve seen the clock run to move the game along.
BAD JOB ALL THE WAY AROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
\
If Tuckahoe is that good, then they should know better, and no matter how many are on the team they simply did wrong letting a score get to that. Not complicated just wrong. It was also easy to bring up some JV, since it was the last game, senior day or not. They well knew it was either going to play out like it did or they did nothing to be proactive and prevent it. Wrong and sad….......
No round up on ossining-westlake as seems to be bit of an upset.
Tuckahoe completely classless. Josh to even utter 1 comment in there defense is ridicilous. They scored 31 pts in the 4th quarter. The most they scored for the entire game. Not this year and most likely never by Greenburg Academy but one day it will bite them. Tuckahoe fans when it happens please don’t say a word.
Tiger Fan-
Ur a joke as well. Nobody is asking the bench kids not to play defense. Its more about not scoring. Pass the ball and use the shot clock. They were winning 81-25 at the end of 3. Time to use clock and nothing else to say. I would be embarrassed to be a Tiger after that game. The blame has to go to the head coach for such a great team to not show any sportsmanship. Don’t blame the kids.
Thanks for calling me a joke Shawn, i’m sure everybody will take you thoughtful opinion on classlessness seriously. The only people complaining here are the people that have no athletic skills and have never been a part of a competitive team in their life. Let me ask you t
Let me ask you this, if a boxer or fighter is completely dominating his or her opponent should he stop fighting and dance around the ring until the round ends? you could ask the same thing of a tennis player or wrestler. If a soccer team is winning by 8 do you think they would slow down? In baseball should the batters not swing the bat or base runners take one base at a time? It seems like basketball more than any other sport gets a bad rap for having such a lopsided score. I was at the game and they were running the clock during the timeouts and as much as they could. Also, the bench players were passing the ball around trying to use the clock. Some of the players on the other team were not even running back to play defense and their coach was yelling at them to do so. The fact of the matter is that these teams have a right to play competitive sports and be in the league but it is almost impossible to field a competitive team due to the revolving students in the school. I have been watching the Tigers for years and anyone who has will tell you that they have been on the other side plenty of times.
Tiger fan, if you are going to use analogies, please use realistic ones. In boxign the ref would stop the fight, ref will not call a basketball game in middle of 2nd quarter. Teams in soccer at high school level usually do slow it down, you do not see lot of 15-0 scores. Baseball teams stop bunting, stealing and gunning for extra base with huge leads. Basketball and football get more of a rap as the coaches can control the score more than some of the other sports. Since you have connections, why don’t you get the tpae of 2nd half, post it on you tube and send everyone the link then all can see the sportmanship showed by the Tuckahoe coaches that you referenced. Also being on the other side of blow-outs and teams running up the score does not make it OK for you to do it, is tha the lesson you want to teach kids?
Given the rules as they are currently constituted in NYSPHAA basketball it becomes difficult to prevent lop-sided scores when teams are so unevenly matched. Some states have instituted provisions that once a team is winning by 30 points or greater, the clock will not stop save for charged time outs. That said, in a game dictated by eight minute quarters things would not get so, so out of hand. And yet it does happen. Remember the Covenant School in Texas that shut out its’ opponent 100-0 [59-0 at half]? After the game the school issued an apology, saying their play did not reflect Christian principles or good sportsmanship and fired their coach.
Untimed sports like baseball and softball can institute Mercy Rules, that is halt the game if an opponent is ahead by X number of runs by a certain inning. Probably that rule is meant as much for the umps who without it, might be umping a 5 hour, 55-2 game.
Not being at Tuckahoe’s game..I can not pass judgment on them. Usually one can see the degree to which the coaches and players narcissism and egos come into play VS. compassion and sensitivities. And yes, it is possible to exercise compassion within the framework of competition.
I distinctly remember in 2005 when Red Hook HS boys basketball team destroyed John Coleman HS, 109-15. The beat down was so bad that the Coleman coach pulled his team off the floor with over SIX minutes remaining in the game. He was livid that Red Hook had its’ starting five on the floor in the 4th quarter. The Red Hook coach, Rod Chando, who also happens to be in the NYS High School Coaches Hall of Fame, defended his move by essentially saying why should he penalize his players for excellence and that he expects all of his players to play hard regardless of who is on the floor or what the score is. Now that is a pretty strict, hard-line approach.
Finally, I find it interesting just how much haters vilify Mount Vernon for their nefarious ‘recruiting methods’ to sustain dominance in Section 1. Yet, invariably, you will almost always hear about the incredible restraint, discipline and respect exercised by Coach Cimmino and his players. In my book, that is one of the true measuring stick of greatness.
