Wednesday’s roundup: TZ, Mamaroneck make history
There are but two places to start this Wednesday night, so let’s tackle each accomplishment separately:
- Tappan Zee finishes undefeated. Tappan Zee beat Nanuet 50-24 tonight to complete the regular season 18-0 and cap the first unbeaten regular season in program history.
TZ is currently the the midst of quite the three-year run. The Dutchman are 52-10 since the beginning of the 2009-10 season, including two County Center appearances that doubled the program’s previous total. They won the first Section 1 championship ever for the program in 2010 and won the Rockland County Championship last year for the first time since 1950. On top of that, TZ has won one of the section’s most competitive leagues two years running.
“Looking at the schedule back in the beginning of the year, no way did I think we’d still be undefeated at this point,” coach George Gaine said.
- Mamaroneck’s big week. Since I had to be in the office tonight and it was close by, I swung over to Mamaroneck High School for a 4:15 start. I was happy I did. The Tigers beat White Plains 46-37, defeating their league rival for the first time since the 2009 Class AA outbracket round.
The achievement came just two days after beating New Rochelle. Get this. That was Mamaroneck’s first win over New Ro since 1971. Yup, 1971! Coincidentally (or not), the 1971 team was the last from Mamaroneck to make the County Center. The Tigers lost to Mount Vernon in the sectional final that year.
What’s perhaps most remarkable about Mamaroneck’s accomplishments this week is that they seem to arrive from nowhere. The Tigers had lost three of their last four. Now? “Right now, I think we’re playing our best basketball of the year,” coach Tyrone Carver said.
Tappan Zee 50, Nanuet 24: At Nanuet, Joe Letizia had 18 points and Brendan Donohue had 11 for Tappan Zee, which completed the first undefeated regular season in program history (18-0). The Dutchmen are now 52-10 since the beginning of the 2009-10 season, including winning the program’s first Section 1 title in 2010 and its first Rockland County Championship since 1950 in 2011.
“Honestly, to see these guys go through what they’ve gone through, the adversity, the close games, and win a lot of close games, I’m glad they let me be a part of it,” coach George Gaine said.
Spencer Mayfield scored eight points for the Golden Knights.
Mamaroneck 46, White Plains 37: At Mamaroneck, Alex Lanni had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Matt Mezansky added 10 points and seven assists for the Tigers, who beat White Plains for the first time since the 2009 Class AA playoffs two days after they beat New Rochelle for the first time since 1971.
Mamaroneck opened the game on a 10-0 run but White Plains rallied behind Akeem Williams (14 points) and Devon Thomas (12) to tie the score. The Tigers responded to finish on an 11-3 run.
“We felt as if we could play with those guys, but it was up to us to prove it,” said coach Tyrone Carver, whose team beat New Rochelle for the first time since 1971 on Monday. “We’ve been able to make some plays down the stretch to seal some nice wins.”
Pelham 54, Lincoln 38: At Pelham, Jon Miller had 13 points and Luke Szendiuch had nine for the Pelicans. Lincoln’s Kevin Asiamah and Greg Boney each had seven points.
Saunders 68, Roosevelt 47: At Roosevelt, Jerrell Benitez had 16 points for Saunders. Corey Reneau added 11 points. Roosevelt’s Marvin Bates had 15 points and Demetris Thomas had 11 points and six rebounds.
Dalton (N.Y.) 64, Hackley 57: At Dalton, Dan Chung scored 15 points. Mustaffa Dais and Max Parauda each added 14 points for the Hornets.
Iona Prep 51, Regis (N.Y.) 34: At Regis, Luke Wooters scored 13 points and had three steals. Tim McCarthy scored 12 points and had nine rebounds. Kevin Conroy had 11 points.
Solomon Schechter 46, Martin Luther King 37: At Solomon Schechter, Evan Ashley scored 21 points.
Riverside 72, Greenburgh 58: At Riverside, Ian Parker scored 32 points and had four assists. Juan Martinez had 12 points and six rebounds. Taylor Cummings scored 21 points for Greenburgh Academy.
Green Meadow Waldorf 52, Tuxedo 48: At Tuxedo, Taylor Miccio scored 21 points.
Woodlands 80, Edgemont 41: At Edgemont, Justin Smith scored 20 points and Andrew Scipio scored 12. Will Loo had 10 points for the Panthers.
Albertus Magnus 53, Pearl River 50: At Albertus Magnus, Tyler Sayre and Arnell Dandridge each scored 14 points. Kevin Degnan had 16 points for the Pirates.
Bronxville 41, Yonkers 40: At Yonkers, Matt Tormey scored 13 points and Jack Aherne had nine. Alex Gallinari scored 25 points for the Bulldogs.
Spring Valley 50, Nyack 49: At Nyack, Kai Mitchell had 13 points for the Tigers. Ervin Williams and Steven Clarke each added nine points. Deashawn Rodriguez had 17 points, including two 3-pointers in the final minute to bring the Indians within one.
Long Island Lutheran 65, Stepinac 50: At Long Island Lutheran, Duvino McRae has 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Crusaders. Tyler Iacuone also had 15 points for Stepinac, which was outscored 25-16 in the fourth quarter.
Dobbs Ferry 33, Irvington 32: At Dobbs Ferry, Thomas Fleming had 10 points for the Eagles, who played without leading scorer Eric Paschall (knee). Eddie Ritch added seven points. Irvington’s Jon Goldreich had 11 points.
Ramapo 53, Suffern 43: At Ramapo, David Haye, Aqueel Dallas and Mezu Aqwa had 11 points apiece for Ramapo. Rashaad Celestin had 11 for Suffern, which played without leading scorer Rich Ibsen (ankle).
Clarkstown South 72, Clarkstown North 48: At Clarkstown South, senior Mike McCahey score 25 points to lead the Vikings on Senior Day. Fellow senior Clayton Rocker added 16 points. Zach Jarrett scored 15 points for the Rams.
New Rochelle 72, Gorton 47: At Gorton, Sean Fener scored 14 points and Derek Dorn had 13. Rashan McKay-Bennet scored 17 points for the Wolves.

Newburgh defeated Kingston 54-46. If MV pulls through and doesnt have any nightmare games, the 9 rep has no shot. Sorry Moose.
I remember TZ beat Alvin Carter and Nyack around 2000 at the County Center. Buddy Lee was the PG and they had some other tough kids.. Was that the semi finals?
Statesman…......you got the 8 point differential correct but it was…..64-56 not 54-46…....touch of ‘calculexia’ [similar to dyslexia except with number rather than letters].
In another thread today I mentioned that this win will make for a more interesting and lively Section 9 AA playoff, albeit, I agree with you that the winner will likely be the sacrificial offering to Mount Vernon.
No disrespect to you re: the non-mention of the Josh Smith transfer to MV. Don’t recall how much of a contribution he made to the Knights at that time. But rest assured Statesman I’ll have your back if and when the situation calls for it.
I actually do have dyslexia, lol.
I noted that the Smith transfer was no harm. no fou.l, I’m a l.o.ser so I just like to toss things out there some times. He was a spot contributor off the bench. Would not have been the best player on the Pok team at that time so being buried on the MV bench was no surprise to me. He was however, a fre.akish athlete that was hitting 400 foot bo.mbs in Middle School on the Baseball Diamond. Multi-faceted guy, that’s why we got along.
I was being facetious about not going to bat for you guys again. I do agree that this opens up the 9AA race. Look out for Middletown and even Washington. I believe they beat NFA already and game within 3 points or so of beating Kingston. A surprising team can emerge in 9 AA this year, should be fun to see how it pans out.
Dobbs-Irvington 33-32? Why the CYO score? This game must have been ugly.
Kellynwhite….
33-32…..Dean Smith’s Four Corner Offense w/o the shot clock?
Oh my bad!!....I’m having another one of my Orange Sunshine flashback episodes. Honey, can you please get me my Diazapam off the nightstand?!!

IS IT TRUE THAT NAZARETH HIGH SCHOOL CLOSING!!
Yes, it is true…........
June 2012 Nazareth will close its’ doors for good. Enrollment down 50% in the past several years…Archdiocese can’t afford to absorb the financial hits and will likely put the property up for sale. Tough sledding for the private schools [eg. Rice HS] unless they have benefactors with deep pockets [ala Bill Gates or Warren Buffet]. Maybe alum Mike Dunleavy Sr. could initiate a last ditch fund-raiser to resuscitate this once vital institution.
On an athletic note Nazareth’s maroon & gold [eerily same colors as MVHS] have been doing exceptionally well. The girls team is ranked nationally near the top and the boys are favored to take the ‘B’ title in the CHSAA.
MVHS65, States,
I believe if NFA was at full strength this year they would have had a shot at MV. But… They are not. Nice win by NFA last night. Thats what happens when you “buy in” play like a team on both ends of the court. Scurlock had a monster night as well
Should be a fun stretch run. NFA at middletown friday and Kingston at middies next week.

IT’S SAD WHEN YOU HEAR ABOUT SCHOOLS CLOSING THERE DOORS!!!!...
SEC 1…
Sad indeed….part of our times’ version of “The Decline of the Holy Roman [Catholic] Empire”...throughout the country archdioceses are either closing and/or selling off schools, monasteries, convents, and even churches. My mother in law has the good fortune of being in an assisted living ‘palace’ right on one of the most scenic parts of the Hudson River [Catskill, NY], that once was a respite, retreat for Roman Catholic nuns.
jmoose….....
You must be relieved that Mr. Rutty got his gyroscope repaired and decided to move back to the ‘Burgh after his hasty decision to enroll at Middletown HS. Isn’t it nice he got a ‘mulligan’ on that move?
I believe that the Newburgh district and basketball program is putting the ugliness of the past couple of years behind them. We all like the story of the phoenix rising from the ashes, right? And BTW, anyone can have a shot when it comes to regionals…where the ‘big dogs’ sometimes, though rarely, can fall to the underdogs. Stay strong my friend, they will be back!
It will take a few years for the standards to be successful. I think some people or kids I should say are having a tough time understanding the consequences. Hopefully kids will learn from the couple guys not playing this year that would have been big contributors.
JMoose,
I feel your woes, literally. Gotta do what you can w/ what you have like what you tell me though friend.
No doubt my friend.
In the end its for the good of the kids
hey moose you never gave your input on the Pok Nfa game , did you go what happend to nfa
Moose,
Yes sir, they’ll learn. Better to get these life lessons now then have to live through a long life of “what-if’s” down the road. Best wishes down the road. I kind of like how Section 1/9’s Tourney’s are staggered. Gives you time to check us out and vice-versa.
Upstate,
I know you weren’t adressing me but to me it just seemed like Pok wanted a bit more. They neutralized Rutty in the paint (No easy put-backs on offenside rebs), contained LJ although he still dropped about 22 and forced others to shoulder the burden. Just looked like they had a bad day.
For once Pok actually had a balanced scoring attack. JR Guard Jahleel Carter had a few big 3’s, 11 off the bench that made the difference. NFA Started slow and ended up in a 17-10 hole after one, they played equal w/ Pok the rest of the way but as we up here can attest to this year—you cant front teams buckets like that and get the W.
upstaterep,
I gave my input to Coach Brown! He agreed with my assessment and did a great job motivating the kids. Lets just say some people didnt start the next game.
But for the board. I was disappointed in our energy. Flat footed on D. Miserable energy all around. We have some young bucks on the squad and have had a hard time getting some upperclassmen to step up as leaders at times. The PK game was a perfect example of that. Nice win for PK. They had better energy all game. Especially the 3rd quarter.
Neither team looked good in my eyes. Sloppy play ruled that day. PK def shared the ball better and like I said had much better energy on the floor.
Sorry bout my absence from the board. Been crazy busy with work.
MVHS65.
Great one. My first thought was the 4 corner as well. Minus Phil Ford of course.
Who misses prince?i do
I second that balla
Good win for the Pioneers. Got rough out there. Also, heard from a parent that she is so happy with the academic emphasis. She said the coach was saying the team GPA was an 85 in the 2nd quarter and they have 4 kids with a 90 or higher average. That is awesome! Great job by the kids and coach. Go Pioneers!!!
These rough ones will pay off. Thanks for the good news, balla. Glad to see my young boys acheiving in the classroom!
