High school sports in the Lower Hudson Valley

Showcase Saturday

Posted by: Josh Thomson - Posted in Boys Basketball on Feb 04, 2012

There’s nothing better for a reporter than a bunch of basketball games strung together at the same site. It’s the equivalent of having the power to multiply.

Later on today, there will be three of me at New Rochelle High School for a tremendous tripleheader highlighted by two of the best games of the season. Not only that, but the first game now seems much more than a worthy opener. Kennedy may be slumping and Poughkeepsie surging. Can the Pioneers still be a factor in the Class A playoffs? Today offers a great opportunity to find out.

Still, the New Ro event has company on the calendar. They’ll host a quadrupleheader over at the famed hardwood at 100 California Rd. to conclude Coaches vs. Cancer week. The event will raise money for the cause, which, as you probably know, has been a major initiative for the BCANY (Basketball Coaches Association of New York).

So…a major Catholic-public city rivalry, Section 1’s two remaining unbeaten teams, the defending Class AA Federation champs, three defending Section 1 champs and a matchup of the last two gold-ball winners in Class AA? That’s a pretty sweet day of basketball.

Here’s the schedule of the two events…

At New Rochelle High School:
Kennedy vs. Poughkeepsie, 12
Byram Hills vs. Tappan Zee, 2
New Rochelle vs. Iona Prep, 4

At Mount Vernon High School:
Tuckahoe vs. Saunders, 12:15
Eastchester vs. Bronxville, 2
Mount Vernon vs. Mamaroneck, 3:45
Gorton vs. Cardinal Spellman, 5:30

JFK 14 Pok 7 after 1. 8 empty possesions for Pok and Thiago R has at least 8.

  2. Statesman

Jfk 22 Pok 15 at the half. Very defensive oriented.

  3. lefty

anyone at monroe for peekskill/green tech?

  4. Statesman

Pok briefly tied it in the 3rd but JFK has responded every single time. JFK up 39-30 after 3.

  5. PeekFatDaddy

Doesn’t look like it Lefty. Nobody reporting the score on Twitter either.

  6. Statesman

JFK is doing a good job executing its inside out offense. Up 52-34 with 2 minutes left. Laffin has pulled his starters due to looking flat on the court.

  7. Statesman

JFK 52 Pok 42. No answer for Thiago in the paint, had a few nice moves to the basket.

  8. lefty

all ive been able to get was 31-28 green tech at half

  9. lefty

    53-48 peek end of three

  10. lefty

  12. Statesman

    TZ 15 BH 9 after 1

  13. lefty

Peek lost by 4 in ot.. was up 3 in closing seconds of regulation but missed fts and buzzer beater tied it

  14. Statesman

BH and TZ tied up at 25 at the half.

  15. Statesman

    Josh,

My thoughts exactly. If Joe L can play like this down the stretch the Gold Ball belongs to TZ.

Just chatted it up w/ Lou Dirello from JFK. Advised me that JFK and PK will be surprise teams if they start to value thr ball and not turn it over carelessly.

  16. haywood

    statesman,

did it seem like pok was tired to you?

  17. The Sports Guy

I can’t stand the way TZ acts during the games, they take after their coach, but there is no denying that the gold ball goes through them. The importance of Letizia is unquestioned. He gets them going and when he comes out of the game they really have trouble running their offense and getting into a rythym. If he can knock down open threes I don’t see how anyone beats them.

  18. haywood

    The Sports Guy,
how does TZ act on the court?

  19. The Sports Guy

They clap in opponents faces, they point and stare into the opposing fans section when they hit a big shot, oshea flipped off the crowd earlier in the year in the pearl river tournament, their coach complains about every single the calls the officials make. Maybe they’ve cut down on that recently but it would be so much more enjoyable to watch them if they didn’t do that nonsense. They are the only team I’ve seen all year that does that stuff.

  20. Statesman

    Haywood,

They were very lethargic so I chalk it up to mental. Jfk also had a game last night and they played well today.

  21. Isaac

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

  22. B-Ball IQ

    NR – 39, Iona Prep 31, 6:07 to go in the 4th

  23. rockbball

tz plays with a swagger that’s been unmatched all year. say what you want about gaine on the bench, but he’s one of the best coaches in the section.

  24. HRs

Haywood, they get a little punkish, but its all good. Knock them off and they will relax. Very confident bunch of kids, who play aggressive in your face basketball. I know Gaines, he is a little bit of a waaah on the bench, but without a doubt the kid can coach.

  25. ROC ON

Its the talent on the court. Coach just a sliver of the pie. Leitiza has changed little in 3 years. Strong on d, good low to ground ball handler but they have never needed him for 3’s. Quite full of himself, and as above the team could use “class” studies. It would have done them well to have lined up better competition tests. That undefeated tag may not stand up when it most matters moving up the state.

  26. kerr for 3

What was iona new ro final

  27. Statesman

    51-40 New Ro

  28. Peekskill Hoops

Gain is not a good coach at all i am sorry to say, he has good talent that is it. You will find out how bad of a coach he is after he loses everyone on that team this year. He cries and whines at every single thing, good or bad. His team does play with a swagger but, that swagger may cost them the game once they get in the big time and there are 3 refs. We will see what happens. I do agree that the gold ball goes through them but, hopefully they can sustain this run long enough to see it, anything can happen come sectional time. Classless team!!!!

  29. sect. 1

How will t.z. be the next couple of years? Is there team senior heavy?

  30. The Sports Guy

Letizia will be the only one left of the current core of players. They will be way down next year along with Rockland basketball as a whole.

  31. Dragon BallZ

TZ wins the chip this year! Only way Kennedy or Poughkeepsie wins is if JFK imports a few more Brazilians and PK has last years team play in sectionals.

  32. B-Ball IQ

@ Dragon – What about Peekskill. It appears they r peaking at the right time despite thier loss today to a team outside the area

  33. New Ro

Told you. Iona racked up alot of wins against weak teams. They win 4 games max in chsaa aa.

  34. Peekskill Hoops

Peekskill is playing strong right now, having routed JFK and Lakeland in the last few games. Obviously they lost to Green Tech in overtime today but, they have a lot of depth and the players to play with TZ. They also have a couple more play makers that TZ does. The only reason that you don’t hear about them that much is because they don’t have that dominant player that the usually do, they are quick on defense and they can shoot. Hopefully they will get a shot at playing TZ in the Championship game it could be a war.

  35. B-Ball IQ

So in advance of the sectionals, does anyone see any major upsets? Does TZ win it all or do they get picked off? How about AM in the B class? I will say that it appears TZ has won alot of close games & that the experience of winning close games is significant come post season. I just think it’s difficult to sweep teams & beat them three times unless you’re significantly better

  36. New chsaa

New Ro absolutely outplayed Iona is almost every aspect of the game. Shocking the way that McCarthy, Abongo, and Conroy did not show up to play today. It seemed like the only Iona player to want it was Wooters and he clearly was affected by his ankle. New Ro would be able to challenge in any other class a=except AA because of MT V.

  37. Statesman

    DBZ,

The Harrison coaches and I had plenty of recruiting jokes to the chagrin of the JFK fans. However, if Thiago wants to work hard and make the most of his opportunity then God Bless him. I wish the kids in Pok knew about the plight of the rest of the world and what young men like Thiago would and currently does with his chance. Maybe we’ll learn in time. Too many unforced errors from Pok today. JFK made it happen.

TZ is to Class A what Pok was to AA. Senior laden with a young guard. I just hope they dont lose to the slew of teams wanting to take them down. I was impressed wity Joe L but am not sure he can make every shot every game.

  38. New Ro

Put Tappanzee in the chsa aa league and they may luck out at 4 wins. Records are overrated. Both New Ro and Stepinac should be ranked higher than Iona and Tapanzee

  39. Statesman

Only a New Ro fan would argue about rankings with an A school. Win your games and you’ll be there at thr end of the season. You have your hands full in AA so worry about those boys first.

  40. HRs

States been watching Joey L for a long long time. If a game gets to a point where he needs to be the feature scorer, they are in trouble. Today he came through, but remember Byram and TZ for that matter weren’t throwing everything they had today. Biggest concern when it comes to TZ is the bench. It is not existent, you get one of them in foul trouble it will be a struggle.

Personally I would love to see this team win it, and then face Harborfields. I follow both closely. Problem is I don’t think it is going to happen….

  41. B-Ball IQ

I want to throw something out to the group. I’m a long time MV supporter, but I opted to go to the New Rochelle / Iona game because I had not seen either team this season & I knew it would be a much more competitive game than MV vs Mamaroneck. I honestly did not want to see a game that I felt would be over in the first three minutes. My question is do you think it might be in the best interest of sportsmanship for Section 1 to consider realigning “AA” & making a MC rule. Let MV play all of their section oponnents just once except New Rochelle & White Plains. They would of course participate in the “AA” sectionals, but I can think of many benefits to the many “AA” sections 1 schools & MV. This was MV can schedule other programs in the regular season such as Boys & Girls , Christ the King, etc. I don’t believe it benefits either scholar- Athlete to compete in games when one team can beat another by a margin of almost 100 if they wanted. This re-organization would allow for say Mamaroneck to play a different, bur more competitive game in what us already a shorted season from cuts several years ago. Once again this is just for chatter (please don’t chop my head off).

  42. B-Ball IQ

    Meant the MV rule

  43. Hoops fan

    b-ball iq,
I doubt Sect 1 officials would ever let that happen, but I think its a great idea.

  44. B-Ball IQ

Let me clarify, MV would only play whateve required AA teams once except WP & NR. So this season they would of only played Gordon, Scarsdale & Mamaroneck once each. That would open up one game on each of thier schedules for more competive games. It would of opened up three games on the MV schedule with the requirement that those game would be against stiffer competition. They would not have to travel because they could fond that within the region from either NY, NJ or CT.

  45. New Ro

    Hey Statesman

Its’s funny how these polls meant someting to you when Poughkeepsie was good. Don’t be a phoney. Your protection of TZ is too obvious.

  46. Josh Thomson

Hoops fan… Incorrect. The Ossining girls did it this season – actually in mid-season. They dropped three league games and scheduled new non-league games in place of them. They recently beat a team from New Jersey 100-79 in a game Chong scored 49 points. That was one of the games Ossining added.

The other school has to agree to the switch. I don’t know if Mamaroneck and Scarsdale would agree to it.

  47. ???

    A LOT OF TZ HATE!

I didn’t make the game today but would like to comment on the shots being taken (without names of course- so courageous!) at these kids and coaches.

To the rockland bloggers- the team plays with passion and they support each other. They’re actions always have a reason.

Coach Gaine- like him or not- does a great job with these guys. Outside of the X’s and O’s which are great. The three coaches on staff have built a culture of basketball in the school. They’re JV always seems to do well too.

BTW Roc on I will call you out again!!!! I have seen TZ RETALIATE to a lot of classless things from your school. Rockland b-ball is tough and TZ’s schedule is not filled with cakewalks. I mean, its not like they are a catholic school playing for class b title : )

Long way to go before any team wins a gold ball. I haven’t read any quotes in the paper or even a blogs saying TZ is #1- just some passionate b-ball. These kids and coaches don’t deserve what is being typed.

    Good luck in sections!

  48. Hoops fan

    bball iq,
I think it would be great to see MV play more of the elite city teams on a regular basis. Obviously Coach Cimmino enjoys taking his teams to tournaments around the country and they certainly play some top competition in these tournaments. I think I’ve read something either by Josh or Kevin that Coach Cimmino was quoted he liked playing games out of the area because of the experience it creates for his kids – understandable. But when you think about it – think of all the great city teams this year, Boys, CTK, Hayes, Lincoln, Jefferson, St Rays (St Rays and Hayes are a 15min drive from MV) it would be great to watch MV against some of these top city teams. Interestingly, MV has played more of the Top 10 teams in Philly (2- Neumann Goretti and Roman Catholic) than they have from NYC (1-South Shore).

  49. Josh Thomson

Sports Guy… I think the freshman, Luke McLaughlin, will be a featured player next year. And Eric Casey is big. TZ won’t be this good, but I think they’ll be better than .500.

  50. ???

New Ro- think TZ scrimmaged you guys? What basis would you put New Ro over TZ?

  51. Josh Thomson

I obviously have not agreed with the notion that New Ro deserves to be ahead of TZ. I still don’t after watching them back to back today, although New Ro’s wins over White Plains and Iona will push them higher up the rankings.

  52. Statesman

    New Ro,

Never a phoney. Pok isn’t bad. We all have to rebuild even you. At the end of the year when MV beats you the rankings mean nothing if you’re the recipient. I’m one of the few Pok bloggers who have been on here this year so relax.

  53. The Sports Guy

    Josh,

Thanks for the input. Obviously I’m not quite up to speed on the freshman and JV teams. I was just implying that Rockland hoops has seen some of the best talent that has come through the county in years (sayer, mcguinness, Peterson, mccahey, etc). All these guys will be moving on and it will be tough to replace them!

  54. New Ro

    Statesman

I feel that Iona and TZ are ranked high because of their good records but they play a weak schedule. On this blog teams are ranked regardless of clsss. In past years when Poughkeepsie was good you seemed to enjoy your high ranking. You become a phoney when you now complain when someone discusses rankings.

New Ro is playing great now. Just as I believed we would beat Iona, I believe we are better than TZ at this point in the season. Are we better than mv. No , but I do not remember you guys getting past them either.

  55. Statesman

The point is if you handle your business then you will be there in the end. What part of that cant you understand? Last year PJ Torres called out Pok for having a weak schedule instead of focusing on ball and look where that got him. Rankings are fun, especially when you prove people wrong on the court.

  56. Hoops fan

    Josh,
Thanks for the info. If the committee making the final decision is the same for boy’s as it is for girl’s, then I don’t see why MV wouldn’t push for it. You have a good point that Scarsdale and Mamk might not agree to it. Also, it would’ve been a great idea this year when MV was head and shoulders ahead of everyone in Sect 1 AA. However, if you look at who MV has coming back next year, they lose a ton. Cousins, Marshall, Stephens, Robinson all graduate. Based on what is coming back next year, I wouldn’t be surprised if Stepinac is the #1 team around. I don’t know enough about the underclassmen at New Ro and WP, but I would imagine both of those teams would be much improved.

  57. Gladiator

The sports guy- hate tz all you want, you know nothing about the kids. They help out with cyo practices and clothing drives and numerous REC basketball games. The kids are icons around the community. They wear emotions on their sleeves and mess with the crowd, the crowds personally attack the players so they defend themselves the only way they can. They probably think you’re just some creepy dude that lives for high school basketball because he never made it in high school.

Peekskill hoops- I smell a little jealousy because of what happened in the county center. Panazarro is a lucky coach with all that talent, he went to clippers for a couple era with brand and don’t cut it, people in glass houses should not throw stones.

Overall tz deserves to have swag, they take all the crap from fans and people saying they’re not that good and they go out night and day and prove that they’re THAT good. People don’t understand what they’re gonna pull off Wednesday. 18-0 with a dismantling of PR, briarcliff, beat Albertus twice, north Rockland (without Letizia), an they took byram down today. People need to give the kids the respect they have earned.

  58. Josh Thomson

Hoops… I think Stepinac will be very good, but I’d be surprised if Stepinac is the best team in the area. Mount Vernon has four underclassmen that play a lot, including Jamal Lewis and Josh Doughty, who will be among the best players in the area next season. Stepinac has its three guards back, but it does graduate three of its top four players (McRae, Iacuone and Greenaway). As you probably know, they’ll be adding at least one player with some good size in the paint, but they still will have plenty to replace.

For comparison’s sake, Cousins and Marshall were making very minor contributions at this point last season and Robinson was out for the year. A lot can happen in those last 10 or 12 games. Other teams don’t get the opportunity to play for the extra five weeks like Mount Vernon. Their players are on to AAU.

  59. coach k

Neither jfk or poughkeepsie looked like contenders in class a. the guards on both teams were awful and turmed the ball over constantly. Each team had 30+ turnovers. the big kid from jfk was very good and was the reason they won the game.neither team can afford to place so little value on each possession. both teams looked terribly overrated. i expected so much more from jfk, especially from their guards.

  60. Peekskill Hoops

Gladiator, do you even know what position Panzannaro held while with the clippers? You seem confident in yourself. I have a couple of State rings so i don’t need to be jealous, oh yeah i also have a Federation title as well. I have been around a long time now with High School basketball, playing in college and now coaching. I know that you don’t act like that on the sideline and the last thing that i teach my kids is to get the crowd going or to ever, ever point a finger in another players face, Taunting is unacceptable. I could care less who wins. I also want to point out that Panzannaro didn’t always have all that talent and still one, he is one of the best coaches to ever coach in the county, and the State for that matter. Also what do i have to be jealous about Peekskill has 5 State Championships, when TZ wins 1 come talk to me!! Keep being proud about winning the section in Peekskill they measure there success by State Championships!!

  61. Peekskill Hoops

    Gladiatior-

What respect has TZ earned? An 18-0 record? Respect has to be earned!! You played one good team all year in Magnus, play some real competition and win the section then they will get respect.

  62. Dazed and Confused

    Coach K,
What game were you watching yesterday? 30+ turnovers for Kennedy? I don’t think so… Kennedy specializes in forcing turnovers and running the break which they did very well yesterday. Yes the Big Man was dominate but to say the guards are terribly overrated is a ignorant comment. You have a sophomore averaging over 12 points a game and beyond maybe 3 teams I haven’t seen a better set of guards in Class A. Get off Kennedy’s back for once, because they’ll prove it in the sectionals how good they really are.

  63. PeekFatDaddy

I have no doubt that Tappan Zee is a good team, but they do play a weak schedule. I will remind you of Nyack in the 90’s coming to the County Center amost every year undefeated and only winning the championship one or two times. Regualr season records are great, but it is the hot team coming in that is battle tested against top competition that usually wins the championship. Gladiator, if you are drooling over a win over Briarcliff, you have something wrong. A top Class A team should not be playing lower class teams!!

  64. Statesman

Hey, some lower ranked teams have been beating and playing with higher ranked teams all year.

  65. ???

Not sure of TZ’s record over the last 3 yrs but I feel they should be respected. Rockland hoops have been good during these years as well and playing teams multiple times is really tough.

I am sure it is hard to swallow peekskill not being the #1 thing talked about in A.

I am not naive, I am sure an upstart peekskill or other team can do to TZ what TZ did to peekskill two years ago at the county center. BTW a lot of these kids were on that team that beat the five time section champs. Does that deserve respect?

  66. Peekskill Hoops

    ?????
You must be from Tappan Zee and you are Naive. Like i said before Different team, different year, regardless if they were on the team that beat Peekskill or not. Its not hard to swallow that TZ beat Peekskill at all. Peekskill is going through rebuilding. Do you realize that Peekskill won there first State Championships in 1995 and 1996 and it took them 10 years to win 3 more. Everybody rebuilds. Just wondering how many State and Federation Championships does TZ have? Can you tell me why exactly do they need respect? How many teams have they played out of the section 1 area? I am not sure so its a legit question. Peekskill has more sectional titles in the last 25 years than Tappan Zee could ever imagine having, it doesn’t happen every year but the stability of its program is unmatched in class A, with obviously Perennial power being the scream of the crop in AA. TZ cannot play with Harborfields and they definitely cannot control Jamesville Dewitt, so if they do manage to get the sectional title, i wouldn’t plan a parade just yet.

  67. ROC ON

    ???
You confirm that TZ does performs with out “class” on the court, in your own posts. What does it matter what others do. Nor are multiple people making a lack of “class” argument against other programs. TZ gets plenty of well deserved respect in Rockland running the table. Now they just need to move on down the road with more “class”, and even more respect.

Playing teams multiple times is not that tough, beating them twice is tougher, but it happens all the time inside Rockland. The records are not that old with the new schedule but the splits are a lot less often than people think, except for TZ PR and not this year. Not a bad thing to lose, it often it can be a very good thing indeed.

  68. Josh Thomson

Peek, Peekskill Hoops… I think you’re underrating Magnus and Byram. I think both teams are as good or better than any team Peekskill has played all season. After watching the games yesterday, I don’t think Kennedy or Iona Prep are better than Magnus or Byram. They are equal at best. (The only team I don’t have an opinion on is Green Tech.)

TZ beat South, which is as good as Mahopac (the best AA team on Peekskill’s schedule). TZ beat Magnus twice (better wins than Peekskill’s two against Woodlands). And TZ beat Byram (a similar Class A team to Peekskill’s best A opponents, Iona and Kennedy).

Peek… TZ has played three of its 17 games against Class B teams this season. Peekskill has also played three (Woodlands twice, and Lincoln Hall).

The schedules are similar, neither being better than the other. I think you guys need to be fair.

I do agree with Peekskill Hoops about earning respect throughout history, however. Peekskill has long earned that respect. TZ is currently experiencing its best stretch in program history, but it does not touch what Peekskill has done.

I also think Peekskill is one of the top contenders for this year’s gold ball. In fact, I think Peekskill has the best chance to beat TZ because of its style of play. TZ is not as deep as Peekskill, which can beat TZ if it can dictate the pace and style of the game. I think Peekskill could outplay TZ in a potential County Center game. The only other team I can say that about is Byram, but only if Byram is closer to 100 percent.

I can’t say that right now about the other contenders. I think it would take a great game from one of them or a clunker from TZ.

  69. Peekskill Hoops

    Josh,

Not underestimating Byram at all. I actually love the way that they play. They play a very clean game, without all the taunting and hype that TZ seems to want to play with. I have not seen Magnus at all but do know that McGuinnes is a stud. PR is down over there this year. Woodlands was a strong class B team. I do agree that Peekskill Schedule is similar but the teams that they have played out of section have been tough games, even that team from Pennsylvania had a really good team that Peekskill manhandled. I think and i hope that we get the chance to see a Peekskill and TZ game in would be great for the county center and the basketball community as a whole.

  70. pistol pete

TZ does not play a weak schedule. The Rockland teams beat each other up all season.
Just ask Horage Greeley the number 3 seed last year, what they thought of the number 14 seed South. South controlled the whole game at Greeley. The Rockland schedule certainly had South ready to knock off Greeley.
So if your not here in Rockland watching these teams compete against each other every night then don’t comment on weak schedules.
TZ plays with swagger and they know that they can beat anybody they face without being overconfident. In big games they get the job done.
TZ hands down will be the class A Section 1 champs.

  71. IonaPower

    Josh

I am confused at your logic- You say that you feel Byram Hills and Albertus Magnus are better than Iona Prep but yet you give Peekskill (A TEAM IONA PREP HAS ALREADY BEATEN) the best chance to beat Tappan Zee-

  72. Josh Thomson

Iona… Iona is not playing as well now as it did back in December. The results prove that. The Gaels have lost three games in the last month and beat a number of average teams by single digits. A case in point: After the win over Peekskill, Iona has played close ones against Spellman, Xavier, LaSalle, St. Edmund’s, etc.

Also, many of the other teams in Class A are carbon copies of TZ, but, at their best, not as good. Peekskill plays 10-12 players, runs up and down the floor, etc. That style could give TZ fits. I don’t think any of the other teams can create those kinds of problems. Maybe Poughkeepsie or Kennedy, but right now Peekskill has played best.

  73. IonaPower

    Josh

I agree Iona Prep has not played well over the last few weeks- They play very good defense but they do not have enough explosive scorers- Their sophomore Isiah Ice should be taking at least 20 shots a game-

  74. Josh Thomson

No offense at all yesterday. They did miss some easy shots along the baseline. It could’ve been a different story had they made some.

    Josh,
Thanks for the info. I don’t know enough about the underclassmen at New Ro and WP, but I would imagine both of those teams would be much improved.

HOOPS….............. I THINK YOU ARE FUNNY!!... LET’S SAY STEPINAC SHOULD BE #1 IN THE STATE ASWELL NEXT YEAR!!... SMH!.... YOU SHOULD THROUGH STEP FOOTBALL IN THERE ASWELL!.. AS THE #1 TEAM IN NY STATE!!... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!

  76. Hoops fan

    PPR,
you don’t follow basketball, so nice try. No way Step will be #1 in the state next year, but I think they could easily be in the top half off the CHSAA AA.

    Josh,
You have a good point about a lot changing in the last portion of a season and the off-season, of course. However, I disagree about MV from last year. Cousins, Marshall and Robinson were all contributors as sophs – it was clear they were going to be top players this year along with Stephens and Doughty who both contributed last year. Bartley played up last year as a freshman. It was pretty clear last year that MV had a ton of talent coming back this year and was going to be very tough to beat. Doughty is very good, Bartley is very good and David, Martin and Lewis would probably be the other 3 starters next year for MV unless a younger kid steps in. Scales and Johnson also return who have gotten time this year.

    Iona Power,

Are you serious? Ice should not be taking 20 shots a game. I have been to probably 5 Iona games this year and he has been out of control and it was proven last night he can’t handle pressure. If you get up in the kids face he will get scared .The only person taking more then 15 shots in a game should be Abongo.

    PPR,
you don’t follow basketball, so nice try. No way Step will be #1 in the state next year, but I think they could easily be in the top half off the CHSAA AA

I KNOW A LIL B/BALL ….I REALLY DN’T POST I JUST CHOOSE TO READ THE COMMENTS!!..... BUT I WILL ALWAYS ADDRESS YOU WHEN YOU GET OUT OF CONTROL WITH POST…..

    wow

Ice is a sophomore so he will have some growing pains but at the end of the day he is one of only a few players on that team that can score.

    PPR,
Your contributions to a basketball blog are much appreciated. If you watch Stepinac or know anything about their players and have watched MV and look at what they have coming back next year, saying “I wouldn’t be surprised if Stepinac was #1 locally next year” is far from an out of control statement. MV has been #1 consistently for so long, they deserve the benefit of the doubt, but it could be a worthwhile discussion next year.

Interesting your reference to Peek as deep. TZ has never over the years been deep with current coach. He has never used the bench past 7 no matter how good that bench was. You are saying Peek can out run/wear down the TZ -7 with its bench.

TZ says the starters stay on the court except for the shortest of times, save foul trouble. The big men get more rest, for wind only, which works against TZ in such a plan. If Peek or anyone used that style of play it would be interesting to see if it worked v TZ. Fair to say most who played TZ have never employed such an attack, will Peek?

  83. ???

WOW 17-0 and “Roc on” still judging. Every year he nitpicks against TZ and praises Albertus. Why so much hate?

You and your team are about to go on a sectional title run. Good luck to you guys- they play hard and are talented. They seemed to be well coaches as well.

As much as I dislike the way you attack our boys I would like to see you do well—- after we are done scrapping it out.

    Good luck!

    Josh,

I was not at the game but bloggers (few) are saying TZ was chippy. Heard it was both ways. Do you have any details since you were at the game???

  84. Josh Thomson

??? ... Yes, the players were mixing it up. The refs let a lot go, but they were very fair and consistent. I think the physical play was 50/50 with both teams. TZ was called for an intentional foul and also had some back and forth with the Byram student section.

  85. ROC ON

    ???
AM had there chances against TZ and clearly came up short. TZ had their number, as TZ did for all of Rock. Nonetheless AM is a strong well balanced team. Incidentally…. not an AM supporter, but u been rap, a rapping, that for so long, one does not expect that, to be believed. Nice words for AM sure they appreciate that after some prior nasty’s.

Said before do not share any belief that AM should not play in Sect 1 and inside Rock (that a supporter make ?). AM clearly makes for better games to watch, against such as TZ, and that is why the gym’s are full. Yes 17-0, and as, has been said before, they get respect inside Rock, as TZ players well should. Still they should have tried better competition, in particular this year, and show the anti Rock what the Rock has to offer… ala TZ.

  86. johnson

SPORTS GUY and ROC ON talk mad ish about tz… maybe if your teams started acting like TZ they would actually be able to beat them #realtalk

  87. wow

    Iona Power,

Clearly there are 3 other players can score on that team Wooters, McCarthy, and Conroy but oh wait you won’t recognize them because they are paying full fare at Iona!

  88. The Sports Guy

    Johnson,

I’ll trade two losses to TZ for a gold ball everyday of the week.

  89. IonaPower

    wow

That is a ridiculous statement- You have no idea who I am or what my background is or anything else about me etc
