Thursday’s roundup: Solano, Daly team to lead Eastchester past Saunders
Today, I went to Eastchester for the rematch of one of the season’s crazier game. This time, the Eagles won again, only they used a far different formula.
Back in early January, senior star Dave Solano spent long stretches on the bench with foul trouble. Even when he was on the court, he shot was uncharacteristically off. But Solano arrived at the gym Thursday for Senior Day determined. It showed.
Solano and sophomore Jack Daly each scored 26 points apiece. Daly led the way in the first half, but it was Solano who helped the Eagles extend their lead into double figures for good. The win pushed Eastchester to 13-4, giving Fred DiCarlo’s team a chance to complete the regular season with 14 wins and a very high seed in the Class A playoffs.
Saunders dropped to 11-4 and has Tuckahoe waiting on Saturday during the Coaches vs. Cancer event at Mount Vernon. The Blue Devils struggled against Eastchester’s zone today. They missed some shots around the rim and didn’t get enough second chance to make up for it. They also played the second half without senior Mike Sullivan, who entered the game as the team’s leading scorer. Coach Anthony Nicodemo benched Sullivan at halftime after the two had a brief confrontation at the end of the second quarter. Although Saunders missed Sullivan’s scoring in the second half, Nicodemo thought it was the right thing to do. Tough to argue that.
In other news tonight, New Ro continued to rise in Class AA. This time, the Huguenots won handily against White Plains, shutting down the Tigers en route to an easy victory. No doubt New Ro has solidified itself as the top contender. We’ll see just how far they’ve come next Friday against Mount Vernon.
A couple other items of note:
1. Dobbs delivered a lopsided win in its rematch with Bronxville, the team that almost upset the Eagles last month.
2. Tappan Zee jumped out to a 30-2 lead through one quarter against Nyack on its Senior Night. Yes, you read that right: 30-2.
Eastchester 70, Saunders 58: At Eastchester, Dave Solano and Jack Daly each scored 26 points to lead the Eagles. Daly had 19 of his points the first half as Eastchester built a 33-25 halftime lead. Solano then added 11 points in third quarter, including nine during a 13-5 run to open the half.
Saunders was led by 22 points from Jerrell Benitez. Teammate Mike Sullivan, the team’s leading scorer, had two points in the first half but was bench in the second half after a disagreement with coach Anthony Nicodemo.
Sacred Heart 43, Salesian 34: At Salesian, Michael Coleman had 11 points to go with 14 rebounds and seven blocks. John Gause had 11 points and seven assists. Vinny Macrino and Joe Miressi each finished with 11 points for the Eagles.

Hey what’s going on guys! Great job as always with the blog and I’m a big fan. With the brackets ever changing this time of the year I would like to make some predictions for who the final four will be in each class:
AA- Mt Vernon, New Rochelle, Clarkstown South, Arlington
A- Tappan Zee, Byram Hills, Beacon, Peekskill
B- Albertus Magnus, Croton-Harmon, Dobbs Ferry, Blind Brook
C- Tuckahoe, Palisade Prep, Childrens Village, Haldane
Now this is all depending on seeding of course and for some it’s not a shock but theres a few upsets in a very competitive section. I’ll try and update this every day.
Defense wins championships:
I peek at mount Vernon’s score and then I look hard to see how many points they allowed, when you score at will and still play hard defense, you are on your way.
blind brook and beacon will not make the county center
Riverside has been a top 4 seed and A. They lose to a class C team by 13 and now they are currently a 6. Someone low seed in A is going to have a very lucky draw.
New Ro is getting better but they will still not get within 20 pts of Mt Vernon. Yesterday Mt Vernon played its starters for less than 1 quarter. New Ro vs Iona will be a good one.
I don’t think there is any way Woodlands doesn’t make the CC. It’ll be Dobbs, Albertus, Woodlands, and whoever.
Sports Guy, I agree…..Woodlands is the real deal. They crushed Dobbs at Dobbs a few weeks back. They play again on Monday at Woodlands. Should be great game going into the playoffs.
If you look at the bracketology on MSG, (I’m not sure how accurate it is, but we’ll assume it is) Albertus, Dobbs, and Woodlands are the top three in that order as of last night. Whoever gets the #1 seed is going to avoid Woodlands in the semis which is huge. Assuming it stays as is, Albertus will only have to beat one of Dobbs/Woodlands instead of both.
Cuse,
Pok has already beaten them. They gave them one of their bonus points so it’ll be nice to play them again. S.O.S. should play more of a role in this ranking index. I know some class C teams are good, others bad but seems like it should go more the way of the Freeman rankings. No way you should get just as much credit for losing to MV as you would Children’s Village or the like.
Statesman,
I will be sitting at the top in new Rochelle, good luck
Statesman, saying some class C teams is good is a strong statement. Tuckahoe is the only good Class C team. If they win out and up being like a 5 seed in A, you want to be the 12 seed.
Cuse,
Hey, I’m just trying to be nice. That’s the matchup I have circled. Pok can play up to the 6 or 7 seed if all goes well so we’ll see how it goes.
Haywood,
Thank you. That’s where I try to sit. I’ll be wearing a shirt that says, ‘Hope 2012.’ I’ll try to find you.
Got to disagree that 30-2 first quarter is an item of note, on any level. There are strong players and there are weak players. TZ should know that well because it was not that long ago when the roles were reversed. Be strong now yes. But Nyack was strong and be strong again yes. All about the talent on the court, enjoy it while it is there yes. Nice to see the bench at TZ where talent has been ignored, again yes.
Roc On,
Agreed. Pok got out to hot starts vs struggling teams last year and what did that get them?
TZ seems like they have a 22-1 coming their way. Who will be the one to knock the Flying Dutchmen off their throne?
Statesman ,
Did you go to new RO and see nate gauze play peekskill with brickhouse a couple of years ago
Wood,
Yeah, always a good matchup. Sure miss Mr. Gause. Brickhouse is/was a stud as well.
I was talking to 2 guys from POK that day at the top of the bleachers about the point guard #4,on your team,I was saying how he dunked on jabarie at the county center.
lol, I’m sure they entertained you. The last #4 I remeber is McLaurin and he isnt much of a dunker
No the other guard light skinned #2,he could jump
Albertus just played nyack in a really tight game. 1st quarter is the first quarter. Subs were in early. TZ knows where they came from. They was nothing done disrespectfull. Leading scorer was a non starter (senior) and no starter scored double digits. Played zone for three quarters and ran the clock down in the second half. Don’t look at a score and make assumptions. There 1st meeting game was tigh for three quarters. PLEASE???
WERE YOU THERE?????
ROC ON you are an Albertus guy (same guy from last year right?) who hates TZ. If I were you I would hate TZ as well.
Last 2 years TZ 6 – AM – 1 – Is this why you are so angry? Worry about your own season.
Congrats to the seniors and coaches on thesenior day. Should be proud!
ahh Dayvon ‘chu-chu’ Whitaker. Inch for inch he has the craziest hops in Pok. Moquan Dickens is there with him. Saw this kid in gym class as a 9th Grader rocking the cradle. I guess Jabarie had that in mind when he caught Dancy last March, lol.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0GIpGIkpsA
He’s only 5’8.
ahh, D. Whitaker
Yea that’s him,he was on a fast break with 3 knights on him and he brought the house down, nobody expected him to dunk because of all the traffic, great guard
Ironically Whitaker and Brickhouse are playing together at ASA.
Peekfatdaddy,
Give me a prediction on KENNDY vs poukeepsie?
Wood,
I remember, think you got us by 12. Had the lead in the first half but you worked te usual magic. Only the Pok fans knew it was coming. Saw him rock the cradle as a 9th grader and blew my mind. Impressive for anyone, nonetheless a 5’8 kid.
Peek,
Add Henderson and MCleoud from NFA and the irony is 4 square.
Peek…speaking of hops, what ever happened to Elijah Lee? That kid had serious jumping ability. I am going to check out ASA when they play Westchester CC this month.
now we have grown men putting youtube clips of high school kids dunking. Can it get any worse or more pathetic.
