A few quick football notes:
• John Jay senior Ryan Sanders has committed to play football next season at Lafayette. Sanders was a two-way tackle last season for the Class A runner-up. Lafayette recruited him as a defensive tackle. His other finalists were Marist and Muhlenberg, according to John Jay coach Jimmy Clark.
• New Rochelle senior Anthony Caldararo reported on his Twitter feed that he accepted a scholarship to play football at AIC next season. Caldararo said he was actually recruited as an H-back, not a tight end or defensive lineman.
AIC (American International College) is a Division II school in Springfield, Mass. The roster is loaded with local guys, including: Stepinac’s Maurice Easterling; New Rochelle’s Markell Rice; Iona Prep’s Michael Dunkley; Tuckahoe’s Jonathan Jubilee; Poughkeepsie’s Jaquawane Simpkins; and Ketcham’s Zach Jones and Bobby Santangelo. The roster also includes former Cornwall QB Kevin Arduino.
• Stepinac has booked its open date. The Crusaders will host Monroe-Woodbury as part of a season-opening doubleheader on Sept. 8 that will also include Xavier and Middletown.
Iona Prep has not finalized its open date yet. Someone close to the program told me the Gaels may play St. Joe’s of Montvale, but I have been told that the team is still looking for an opponent.

AC—PLEASE DONT GO TO AIC…YOU CAN DO BETTER…TALK TO THE KIDS THERE FIRST….
IPC, what is wrong with AIC?
Usually when talented kids like the above mentioned names go to a school like aic its because they probably have a hard time qualifying elsewhere. Yes even the iona prep scholars.
Bobby Santangelo from Rye?
You have to give AIC credit for recruiting this area!
AIC plays football in the Northeast-10, it is a very competitive Div 2 football conference with Southern Conn, New Haven, Stonehill, Bentley to name a few. They are always playing as one of the top teams in league. Coach Wilkins happens to be a Westchester guy. He went to Iona prep & has been coaching there for along time. He does recruit this area. I guess that is the important part of my point. He loves to recruit the Westchester area & they do put together ogod packages. It is a great option for kids who are not Div 1 or 1 AA kids.
Div 2 SAT requirements are slightly lower than Div 1 schools as far as qualifying[ 14 core classes vs 16 core classes]. But AIC has been a great school for many kids in this area for all sports. When title 9 changed College football in our area with programs dropping football- [Iona, St Peter’s, Siena, Fairfield,, St John’s] The Div 2 schools have given alot of Westchester kids a place to continue there careers. From this article you can see the talented kids who are on there roster, that are playing college football at a very good level.
Congratulations to Anthony Caldararo on his committment.
Some important information :
A word to wise to next years HS Freshman [class of 2016]. The NCAA is raising the minimum core grade point average to a 2.3 [it is 2.0 right now]. The sliding scale will start at 2.3 in your 16 core classes. Anything below a 2.3 you are not eligible! That is like a 75 avg? Please be advised that your Freshman grades count as much as your Junior & Soph grades.
The NCAA also counts a 79 the same as a 70 when calculating your NCAA GPA. [It is a 2.0-].
A 2.0 is not qualifying starting for next years freshman in High school. If you have 16 core grades of 79 in your 4 years in HS. You will have a 2.0 & not be eligible. It is going to be much harder to be eligible for Div 1 & Div 2 athletics in future
Agree with info! Played at two of those drooped football programs. Let’s hope 1AA football as we know it now stays in tact or a lot less kids from the area will be playing college football.
The NE 10 has really benefitted from the MAAC being gone. Good kids have gone to NEC schools, and even some to CAA schools while others settle in at NE 10.
