Sayre Named MVP After Reaching 1,000 Points

Posted by: Josh Thomson - Posted in Boys Basketball on Jan 16, 2012

Hi everyone, it’s Gina Pernicano here, filling in for Josh tonight on the blog.

A little while ago I had the chance to speak with senior Tyler Sayre of Albertus Magnus, who scored his 1,000th point today in the 65-57 win over Xavier in the championship of the Richard McNichols Memorial tourney. Sayre reached the milestone on a free throw with three minutes left in the fourth quarter and was named the tournament MVP.

“Throughout the whole game I wasn’t thinking about it too much, I just wanted to try and get us the win,” Sayre said. “Once I got the shot, everyone started cheering and I didn’t realize what it was for at first. Then, once I saw them coming out onto the court, I knew I got it and it was a pretty good feeling.”

Coach Pat McFadden added: “It’s a tremendous honor that he has earned. He’s a captain of the team and a leader far beyond that. He’s a low-maintenance star who just leads by example and we’re very proud to have him at Albertus Magnus.”

Sayre finished with 32 points and 14 rebounds, and teammate Jack Sullivan added 10 points.

Clarkstown South 69, Hackley 33: In the consolation game of the Richard McNichols Memorial tournament at Albertus Magnus, Joe Zayer had 11 points. Dan Chung had 11 points for the Hornets.

Iona Prep 49, Bishop Ford 28: At Iona Prep, Felix Abongo had 16 points and four steals. Tim McCarthy had nine points and four assists and Isiah Ice had eight points and four steals.

Kennedy 66, Washingtonville 52: At Kennedy, Mike Ennis had 17 points and Mike DeMello had 14 points and seven steals. Thiago Randazzo added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Congrats Tyler. To score 1000 points in basically two and a half seasons is a great accomplishment!!!
