Monday’s schedule
Happy Martin Luther King Day to everyone. You probably won’t be happy to hear this, but I’m not around this week. I have a few posts that will publish throughout the week, including the newest set of rankings tomorrow.
If you’re off today and want to catch some basketball, there are a few good ones. Mount Vernon will try to win its second straight down in Manhattan and should be the favorite. Cardozo is without its top player, super Class of 2013 prospect Jermaine Lawrence. The junior star recently left the school.
Monday’s games —
Pearl River at Suffern, 3 p.m.
Washingtonville at Kennedy, 5 p.m.
Big Apple Basketball Invitational
At Baruch College:
Mount Vernon vs. Cardozo, 3:45 p.m.
Richard McNichols Tournament
At Albertus Magnus:
Consolation: Clarkstown South vs. Hackley, 2 p.m.
Championship: Albertus Magnus vs. Xavier, 4 p.m.

At the mid season mark I wonder what seedings would look like. Still, tons more to be determined.
EVEN IF CARDOZA HAD HIM MOUNT VERNON WOULD HAVE STILL BEEN FAVORITE TO WIN THAT GAME,HIM LEAVING JUST PUT MORE PRESSURE ON MV TO WIN
Lets hope MV plays better than they did Saturday..
12 12 end of one MV
Thanks Spacecadet! Please keep them coming
28 26 mv halftime..Ill try and get details
Isaih Cousins picked up 2nd foul min into 2nd qtr and sat the rest of the half. Knights getting good looks but not falling (similiar to Saturday).. Cardozza his a trey at the buzzer. They already had a problem in this gym from the outside..
spacecadet are you independently wealthy?! How do you manage to be such an up to date, fountain of knowledge on these games? You should start your own .com enterprise! Thanks for keeping us posted.
@ Space – Much appreciated. Are there any live updates…NY Post, etc…
LOL 65 I dont think so.. got a friend sending texts.. and I know you guys would do it for me if you could. Only details I can give you is they are playing a man to man and zone press nothing crazy yet, turned the over a couple of time. Saturday they sat back more than I was used to. Maybe Bobby is saving the gang tackle defense for March.
iona-ford score from 1pm?

I’ll take em home brother..
58 49 final
As my bud David likes to say, “It was just another ‘Velvetta Victory’!” [for the Knights]...Roll on MV
Cousins MVP 19 points 5 steaks, 5 rebounds.. and he sat almost the whole 2nd qtr
spacecadet..did Cousins put a little A-1 sauce on those 5 “steaks”? Seriously, 5 steals is almost, dare I say, Gus Williams like…and that’s considering he sat out most of the 2nd Q.
So is he the “Next One” following in the footsteps of Hinds, Wright, Jones, Coburn, Mitchell, Benjamin, Gordon, Sulahuddhin …..........all on down the line
65..when you bring up the wizard, drop down to one knee in the Tebow position, and thank the good lord we were able to see him play..
I might put him in the Coburn, Mitchell,Benjamin group.. Hinds is yet to be defined and right now is doing a little moon walk, Jones is the best bigman to come out of MV will be number 9 to go pro.
Ben is great, but he ain’t no Gus…
agree?
ip
Iona won by over 20- Great defensive effort- Held Ford to under 30 points
Power
.. sounds like Iona is getting it together. I hear they are a very young team. Any comments
@ Spacecadet – Good analysis, but not sure you can say Kevin is the best big out of MV…unless you don’t consider Rodney & Scooter bigs. Scooter was the #1 rated player in the nation coming out of HS (ended up getting hurt)& Rodney won a national championship at Louisville while playing a major role & had a long career in the NBA. There was also Bill Pleas (did not see him play, but I have heard the stories from many respected bball historians).
spacecadet
They are a solid team- They play excellent defense- I believe only a few teams have scored more than 50 points against them- However they are not close to the teams they put out on floor with Brian Voelkel etc.. Those teams were beating clubs like St. Raymonds, Cardinal Hayes and Newburgh so that was a special group- I think Iona will get moved up to the CHSAA AA next year so if that happens they will have some rough nights- They do have 4 freshmen on the JV so I expect 3 of them to play big roles next year on the varsity- One kid is 6’8’’ who could develop into a very good player and a 6’4’‘kid who I expect to play major minutes next year as a sophomore- They have two very good sophomore guards doing well this year on the varsity-So they have some talent to be maybe competitive against some of the middle of the pack CHSAA AA teams.
iona is very good, and will only get better in the future..they have a few jv shooters who can score (esp. their pg, who could/should be playing varsity) and they have an african 7-footer freshman…regarding the varsity, wooters doesnt miss free throws, and can dribble by anyone, and can make shots…abongo is scary, can do it all, rebound, defend, shoot from the perimeter, and dunk in different ways…mccarthy is a big presence on the inside who takes up alot of space..and probably their best player, ice, is only a soph i believe? kid reminds me of that guard on peekskill few years back..
iona’s only losses are to hallows, and the ot buzzer shot by moore catholic (who is 15-3)...iona’s upcoming games against new ro and wp should be good to watch…is st. anthony a power in basketball? they close out the regular season with them at iona
Update/Spacecadet…........
PLEASE…..NOT PLEAS!! Bill Pleas the ultimate MV legend…....
Hey, anytime you’d wish to share Bill Pleas stories…I’d be glad to join in, with my own first and second hand accounts.
Sampler: ‘66-67 season MV is visiting NR..a tight game…packed crowd. Tie up near the MV basket. Back in the day.. pre-alternate possesion there were jump balls on every tie up. Pleas at the MV foul line on jump ball with NR center..ref tosses up ball…both players jump…Pleas keeps rising….a good 8-10 inches above the other player…controls the ball with one hand [still on the way up] and shoots…swish! Refs don’t know what to do… never seen anything like it…......They confer at center court then decide to wave off the basket….ruling the jump ball must be tipped to another player before a shot can be taken.
I’d never seen anything like it before or since….....AMAZING VERTICAL…..ala taking coin off the top of the backboard…which he absolutely did do!! Too bad he wasn’t physical enough to make it in the NBA…became a god in Israel pro leagues!!
However best big man while still in high school.. must go to Scooter McCray, albeit, Rodney’s star shined long after in the NBA.
Best guard…...spacecadet are you listening?.........HANDS DOWN IT GOES TO THE WIZARD….........Gus Williams…..he could pick your left pocket and leave his calling card in your right pocket.
I’m still laughing at the Bill Pleas story. I also understand that ( I could be wrong) that drugs was a major factor why he did not go to the league. Everyone I have ever spoken with said he was one of the best ever
Iona Perp Power…
Iona perp has bill boards all over the unpaved roads of Africa offering young TALL boys a chance @ a higher education in the US of A…the only thing they have to do is play basketball.. This is Iona Perps theory of “community” service…shame .. some rich Americans from Westchester will do anything to win and make it to AA???? Iona Perp is rich in tradition..
Power and IP.. good info on Iona. hope to see them do well next couple of years
My apologies about the McCrays. what was I thinking.. Watched them both play and Scooter got a tough break with the knee injury. I stand corrected. Rodney is top gun. Pleas was the playground ledgend and owned 4th street. And we know what went on down there. The way it was told to me, he dunked on a young Earl Tatum once and the howls from the spectators watching from the project windows was heard in the bronx.
Great story about the NR game with Pleas. For others reading, ( and I did not witness it) there is the dunking of two balls before a playoff game against White Plains in a playoff game that almost sent White Plains back into the locker room and the taking of the quarter off the glass. I believe he had a cup of coffee with the Pistons.
Gus, and to think Vinnie Olson cut him as a junior..lol. Made the trip to the Knights of Columbus in DC 71 when they lost to either McKinley or Dematha.. What a team.. I am going to spend some research time at the MV library. They have The Daily Argus on micro films..
Don’t expect iona up next yr. They are very happy where they are.
Their current team is senior heavy.
MV defense was stifling today – Cousins had a great 3 quarters. The dunk in the first quarter was dirty. Nice win for sure. One concern that I can foresee, when Cousins isn’t on the floor – who willingly scores? Or I should say – who creates like Cousins? That being said, they should waltz to Glens Falls. Possible blips on the trip to FL – but NY competition is handled for now.
Iona is going to struggle next year they are losing a lot. 4 of their starters are seniors (Wooters, Conroy, Abongo, and McCarthy) and then they also lose 2 reserves that do get some decent time (Crews, Fay). They will be able to bring up some shooters from JV but they will be very young and who knows how the big kid will be next year. If they move up to AA they will be doing exactly what Stepinac has been doing LOSING.
Fan of ball:
stepinac is 7-7 and 3-5 in league…all games have been very competitive. Their jv is good and freshmen team is in 1st. Not sure I would say stepinac is “losing” As a program they have handled themselves very good for their 1st yr up in a very tough league. Not sure if iona would do the same next yr. Stepinac has alot of young talent returning and coming up. I wouldn’t put iona in the same sentence as stepinac when it comes to basketball. There is a reason why they are playing the schedule they are and iona is playing who they are.
kudos to the crusaders.
any explanation why my previous comment needs moderation?
It is clean, proper and accurate.
Step Alum:
There is a reason and that was because of the league change. Also, you don’t compare Stepinac and Iona in basketball in the past 4 years that Iona and Stepinac have played, Iona has won 7 of those games while Stepinac has won 1. Even last year with Iona being way down they barely beat them at home in 2 OT and then they lost to them at Iona.
Iona beat evryone bc they had voelkel the beasssst! But guess where all those wins got you?? Playing in the b, oh I mean the a. I’ve actually had friends that graduated from iona say they rather come to step games.
Now calculate stepinac and iona record over 20/30 yrs and college players. Not even close!!!
You want to live in the past, live in the entire past, not just 4 yrs.
The funny thing is the varsity coach for Iona is such a coward he voted his team behind fordham prep so they can stay in the B division. So they can hang another phony banner on their million dollar walls.. While he goes on recruiting trips to African villages to find tall boys? Sad but true, this school makes me vomit
yonkers guy
Saunders=LOSING PROGRAMS-U GUYS NEVER WIN
IONA =WINNING PROGRAMS CHAMPIONSHIP BANNERS-College Recruits
step alum ‘05
Iona will be in the AA next year and then we will see what happens again on the floor- All I know is that in the past 5 years the Iona record speaks for itself against Stepinac-
How many years did it take for Stepinac to play with the big boys on the football field so before you flap your gums about Iona u should see how long Iona stays in the A- Now we will not get into the countless beatings that Iona has given Stepinac in football over the years including the beatdown this year to open your field.
Fan of ball:
After voelkel left iona left. Last season they were 12-14 and now they are in a terrible league because of the new chsaa alignment. Enjoy playing for 15th place.
Go saunders!!!!!
yonkersguy
The “billboard” comment is the funniest thing I have read on this blog!
That aside, it sounds as though Iona is loaded for the future with some great size.
