This post is the rare one that overlaps between football and basketball. That’s because Westlake’s Tommy Hopkins will miss tonight’s game against Briarcliff and tomorrow’s against John Jay at the Putnam Challenge. Why? The junior lineman was invited to the U.S. Army National Combine this week in Texas.
The combine began yesterday in San Antonio. It features 500 of the top underclassmen in the country participating in a combine that leads into tomorrow’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will be broadcast at noon at NBC.
The 6-foot-6, 282-pound Hopkins was invited as an offensive line prospect and is the most widely recruited Class of 2013 football prospect in the Lower Hudson Valley. Hopkins has been recruited by scores of Division I-A schools, including the likes of Syracuse, Penn State, Boston College, Notre Dame, Virginia, Illinois, UConn, UMass and Villanova, among others.

What type of season did Hopkins have this year? I remember hearing a lot of hype after a big sophomore season, but I didn’t hear his name this year.

The Best OL in Section 1 is the kid Devlin Brennan-legit 6’4”, 280-from Lourdes. 3yr Varsity starter at Lourdes. When Lourdes played Westlake in Game #2(9/17), Lourdes won 35-19, and Brennan tossed this Hopkins around. Besides being Big, Strong, and Irish Mean, kid has a 3.9 GPA….

Football knowledge aka Lourdes fan I was at the game as well. Not sure why you had to go negative to praise your player. Brennan is very good and deserves lot of praise. Lourdes doubled up Hopkins and did nice job on him on defense and held him to around seven tackles. But go watch the tape and tell me what Brennan or any Lourdes guy did against Hopkins when he was blocking them, not much. Lourdes dominated the line as they go around 280 across but Hopkins especailly on the O line where he is being recruited more than held is own against all of them inlcuding Brennan who again is a very good player in his own right.
both players are very good , we should promote these kids and not say derogatory things about other players
fan- agree 100%, that is why people do in other area’s, down south, midwest, pa , even in nj as they advocate all the kids in their region. They know a rising tide lifts all ships, on this blog it seems like many people can not make a positive point about someone without tearing another kid down. guess with all the all pro teams in ny and sports radio were paid professional athletes are ripped, people forget these are high school kids.
Neither kid is as good as john brennan
sb , both kids are bigger and underclassmen
They are bigger and have no excuse for getting worked when croton played them
sb, i dont know what game you were watching but lourdes were in both games and no one got worked, lourdes all underclassmen we will see next year who got worked !!!!, keep in the back of your mine which kids will land at a better school then tell us who got worked !!!!!!!
Lourdes battled Croton hard and Croton did beat up Westlake as they were very young and not very good this year (will be better next year) but beat badly because Croton had far superior team where Westlake had one great player and couple of good ones but rest were not that good this year. Like lot of teams they ran away from Hopkins as they got most of their yardage running up opposite sideline away from him, did not do much the few times they challenged him, he was far from worked over and neither was D Brennan from Lourdes when playing Croton. All three are very good and will be good college players and all have done their programs proud. Croton had a great team, do not diminish it but making inaccurate statements about individual players on other teams.
I said that having watched both games vs. lourdes and the westlake games. What I said was most definately accurate. Brennan handled hopkins and the other lourdes kid… He simply has a better skill set and far better technique…
And keep in the back of your mind who is the best and who will be the best next year. Respect will be paid to the champs. Oh and brennan will go to a better school and be more productive than the lourdes kid and hopkins. Superior talent plus a mean streak. Watch the game again
Sb- Nice crystal ball you have predicting their futures and next season, can you give me this weekend lottery numbers while you are at it. Disagree with your opinion and to be honest I do not get “respect to champs”, only one not showing any respect is you.
sb , you must be a parent live thru their kid, there is alot of good football players out their not just in croton
sb, is that why the lourdes kid was CO MVP with the kid from croton , they all are good players
football knowledge
congrats on your son being O/L mvp at nuc, well deserved. not sure what game you where watching vs westlake but hopkins and mcdowell from mt.vernon are the best linemen in sec 1.
In the future you get a much more realistic assesment of talent if you take the daddy glasses off before the game. this blog is a forum for celebrating all sec 1 players not just our children.
thanx mike
