GAME RECAPS
Croton-Harmon 53, Yonkers 24: At the County Center, Ian Thom had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists to earn MVP honors for the Tigers, who led 15-2 after one quarter. Yonkers cut the deficit to 10 at halftime behind the rebounding of Pablo Gomez (10 points, 13 rebounds) and Alex Gallinari (4 points, 13 rebounds).
Croton responded in the second half by applying pressure, forcing the majority of Yonkers’ 20 turnovers. The Tiger defense held Yonkers to just seven points in the second half and 21.4 percent shooting (9 for 42) for the game.
Wes Turner added eight points for Croton. Ten players scored for the Tigers, including six points for Aaron Thompson and five apiece for Tyler Gilman and Jason Howald. Thompson, Thom and Rob Simmons each had four rebounds to lead Croton. Thompson also had four assists.
Albertus Magnus 59, White Plains 53: At the County Center, Tyler Sayre and Jack Sullivan each scored 16 points for the Falcons. Sayre made six of seven shots, had four rebounds and three blocks. Sullivan made four 3-pointers, including two to help Albertus build a 9-2 lead early. White Plains then went on a 14-2 run behind Anthony Williams (20 points, eight rebounds) and Akeem Williams (18 points, 3 steals).
Albertus moved in front for good behind a strong second quarter surge. The Falcons led 31-26 at the break and never trailed against, although the game remained close throughout. White Plains actually scored five straight points to tie it 51-51 on a hoop by Anthony Williams with 2:38 left. But Sullivan drained a quick 3 after a timeout. After a White Plains turnover, Pat McGuinness scored as he was fouled. His three-point play gave Albertus a 57-51 lead.
The Falcons closed out the victory from there. McGuinness finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He led an offense that shot 52.6 percent (20 for 38) from the field. White Plains shot 23 for 49 (46.9 percent).
Spencer Mayfield will go for his 300th career coaching victory tomorrow night.
Byram Hills 66, Poughkeepsie 56: At the County Center, Jeff Lynch had 24 points and five assists for the Bobcats. Andrwe Maloney added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Ryan Golden had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Heard that they have big problem tonight getting referees. No longer 3 refs tonight only 2. Shame. The CHSAA is run so much better. AA games you get 3 referees. Young refs. Cant wait to see the old goats they throw out there tonight. Last year was a joke all old timers. Who assigns these games needs to watch them..then go watch a CHSAA game and take notes. Not fair to the kids the coaches or the fans…happy new year..
WHITE PLAINS-66 ALBERTUS-58
POUKEEPSIE-70 BYRAM HILLS- 64
Great great win for a class B TEAM TO BEAT AA,I AM SHOCKED
mtvernonguy… I talked to the tournament director. There were no problem getting referees tonight. The tournament, as many people probably know, usually loses money. They have tightened the budget in several areas in recent years, cutting back the available refreshments for media, etc., trimming staff, etc. They opted to go with two officials this season. No complaints from teams so far.
Another tough L. I’m waiting for PK to play 4 quarters of controlled ball. Didn’t match Byram’s intensity to start. Can’t let a good team get up early on you. Byram vs Albertus will be interesting. Pok/ WP in consolation not bad. Everyone stay healthy.
Poughkeepsie falls to 1-3. They need to stick together and keep working hard. They will be ok if they do that. If not, and guys go individual ways it could be long year. 12 n 6 with sectional championship is better than 21 -1 and getting beat by mv again.
Tomorrows game will show where they are at in terms of mental toughness.
No need to panic the two teams that won were better, that said,if POK can defend the three and control the boards they can beat white plains.
BYRAM will beat albertus- by 8
States I hate to say it but I picked against your boys in this game. I do work in BH so I know these kids well. BH was looking at this game as a program building win. They have been all over it for weeks. I did like what I saw from your boys though. Very early in the year and they are being tested(which I like). Come section time, they can easily win a chip. Being that deep and athletic can go a loooong way.
Tomorrow, Albertus will have the best player on the court. Its a matter of how BH defends him. You get into AM’s bench, BH will run away with this.
Byram may not be as talented as Albertus (it is close) but I think they are much deeper than AM. If Sayer picks up a few quick fouls this game could be over early. A win for either team could be a season builder. Taking out another classes defending champ would be huge.
Sports disagree with you from the stand point of BH beat Am and it being considered a season building. AM is a lower class, in reality they are suppose to win this game. Now Am winning and taking aout a higher level section team..that is big. BH beating POK was what they wanted. Same class, coming down from AA. This was a statement game for them. Know it for a fact. Beating AM is gravy, but not nearly what beating POK meant.
I know both teams well. BH is quicker and will be all over them defensively. They will try and take Sayre out of the game and force the others to beat them. If McGuinness isn’t on tomorrow, this game won’t be close…
HRs,
I respect it, as a realist I saw Pok possibly going down. BH is a nice team. Hopefully Pok will continue to improve with games vs WP, JFK, NFA and the ditchess boys. Maybe they’ll click with a new piece or two and get things going. Albertus is also very good. I can’t wait to see how that pans out. If Kingston plays well like I think they may, Iona, Peek, Mahopac and BH get extra validation.
Does BH play PR and TZ at all. JFK or Somers?
Agreed HRs. MCGuinness played his best game of the year tonight and they will need him to maybe even be a bit more effective than he was tonight to win tomorrow. Don’t overlook the back to back for Albertus. They have no depth and come the second half of tomorrows game they will be playing on tired legs.
Tell me what you though of Lynch…. Pok is too wild and they have way too many unforced errors. This will hopefully start to change over the course of the season.
No the Rockland teams will only play Rockland teams. BH would only play them in sections. Its unfortunate. But this helps POK. POK and Peek will have played the toughest schedules. So hopefully they use it as a learning experience and grow.
It does appear that Byram Hills is as good as advertised. The ability to drain threes will make BH a tough customer this year …
Tough loss for Poughkeepsie, but I guess you can chalk this up to the learning process. Also, it’s pretty hard to win if you keep spotting the other team 8+ points. Still, I tend to agree with jetsstink; when playoff time comes around, it’ll probably better for PK to have been battle-tested in games like these instead of beating up on the locals at the Dutchess County Tournament…
Sports great point on the depth/tired legs. Felt that was exposed in the PR tourney. BH will run, so they will need to try and slow it down. Should be a fun game tomorrow.
I don’t know Jeff, Arlington lost to Mahopac by 8 compared to our 3, Lourdes played JFK respectivelly and Beacon is much improved. A few slip ups in league play would hurt. I hope this competition helps the Pioneers down the stretch to echoe popular sentiment.
Bummer the Rock teams are confined to the county. They’ll be ready when it counts. How’s Brewster, Rye, Harrison, Spring Valley, Nyack and I hear Stallworth is about to play for Pelham? That would change things.
In my eyes, BH, TZ, POK, PEEK and Kennedy are the teams to beat in the A. These teams all possess qualities that can equate to a championship. The A is by far the most intriguing league this year. Any of the teams mentioned can win a chip.
Then you leave the section and you will have Harborfields waiting in the wings…..
Good points, Statesman… I noticed that PK’s next game after Catholic Central is at Beacon on January 6. And as you well know, Beacon desperately wants to beat Poughkeepsie, regardless of what the sport is…
Lourdes will also be a challenge; any team coached by Jim Santoro should be respected.
Arlington? I dunno. They have more resources and students than any school in Dutchess (if not all of Section 1), yet the basketball team’s recent records never seem to reflect those advantages. Maybe adding former John Jay coach Ernie Verdis to the staff will light a fire under the Admirals…
Just a correction: TZ does play Byram Hills this season.
Josh when do they play? Was it a write in game? I have both schedules, but they could be older.
Class A is always the most intriguing… AM is a very good team as is BH. It will be great to see the two defending champions of their respective classes square off for the ‘chip. Magnus might actually be a really tough matchup for Byram. It’ll be a tough match for them… but BH seems to have a knack for winning in the county center.
Talked to tye belton at the game he said he’ll be back Jan. 2 , he didnt say why he was out but he’s ready to come back bad .
I believe it’s on Feb. 4 at New Ro — same day New Ro plays Iona. I’ll ask Ted Repa tomorrow to make sure.
...and I just checked. That’s what it has on TZ’s schedule, but I’ll check again with Repa.

Thanks Josh, that tourney wasn’t listed on the schedule I had. Ill also ask the parents of a few players to confirm as well. That will be a nice little tune up for sections…
JFK vs MAHOPAC Sat 1/7 4:00 PM at Brewster H.S Part of the Putnam Challenge. A great match up
JFK/Mahopac is a great matchup. Can’t wait to see how that one goes.
JFK should be in catholic school league. They recruit players like crazy. I agree good matchup but JFK beats PAC by 9. They have zlou Demello behind the scenes working for them and The coach recruits on the AAU circuit. JFK was a more respectful and respectable program with Nelligan. Back then it was about a Catholic education now all about bb. PAC will come up short vs JFK.
Pok is so young and inexperience. Our only senior is a role player. Many expected this but Im surprise they are so passive on D. Im from Pok and a huge supporter/fan of Pok athletics, that being said I hardly know any of these kids. Thats how young they are .. bunch of JV kids and other that havent played organized ball much. They have talent but need time to learn. Theyll lose a few more but will get it going by mid season.
Also, unfortunately 2 potential starters arent playing (on the team) this year for whatever reason … Probably grades? ....
Peta, one is behavior. Wasn’t a team player and should be back early next year. Credit to Laffin by sitting him through tough early L’s. The other is another situation, maybe he’ll be back next season or late this year. (Here’s to hoping). Played 3 great teams w/ a young squad and didn’t get ran out the gym. Def room for overrall growth.
Laffin will get them going defensively. Not enough offensive firepower to be lax on D.
I agree Dutchess man… Magnus and JFK should both be in the catholic league- taking away opportunities for other teams to succeed.
I was going to post a response to the people who say AM and JKF recruit and then decided it wasn’t worth arguing over again.
I love the parity of Section One Basketball right now. Besides MV class is meaningless. C’s and B’s taking down AA’s. Battles are beginning in A. B is up for grabs with AM leading the way looking good. Mahopac and Clarkstown South are new contenders in AA. JFK looks like world beaters. TZ is getting the job done. Brewster is lurking in the mountains. Nyack and Spring Valley are looking for respect. Somers is quietly playing ball and Rye is playing top class competition which will make their remaining schedule feel like a breeze. Anything is possible. A lot more play left and things are starting to get interesting.
I have went through this before. Am doesn’t give money, they are actually losing players to bosco, st joes, and Bergen catholic. There is no advantage. More important is what is good for the area. Ask pr and TZ if they would rather play am or another westchester school? The answer would be am, just check the attendance.
AMHS,
SV, Ramapo and MV have to deal w/ transfers to other places. Lakeland got bit in the past as well. Those places had to play with what they had. Can’t blame kids for wanting a catholic education, they can replace transfers in ways typical schools in our area cant is what the debate is about I daresay.
Good matchup with Pac /Kennedy but think Pac wins in a close one.I like Kennedy”s intensity but think thier inexperience gets them at the end. I also think the games Mahopac had with Peekskill and Pok will really help this team in pressure situations and with thier confidence.
Pac 64 Kennedy 60
East of Eden makes a good point regarding the current parity in Section 1 boys’ hoops among the different classes. To me, that’s likely because that unlike football, all you need is a dozen kids to dress a basketball team…
On a lighter note, I look at it this way: Regardless of what happens tonight vs. White Plains, Poughkeepsie will still have an undefeated league record. I know it may not count for much, but I gotta stay positive this year…
Before these discussions start about Nelligan not recruiting and coaching with dignity, lets not forget that Donnie McGrath was recruited to Kennedy and started the barrage of players that followed… Just because JFKs coaching staff works harder then any other staff doesnt mean they recruit, it means they attract talent.
