I’ll be busy all day and night today finishing up our boys basketball preview, which is set to run in The Journal News on Friday. It will include features about Albertus Magnus and Byram Hills. A separate feature will follow on Mount Vernon on Sunday.
In the section will be the latest Super 7 — a selection of the top seven returning boys basketball players in the Lower Hudson Valley. That consists of players from Westchester, Putnam and Rockland Counties — public, Catholic and private.
I wanted to ask you: Who deserves to be considered for Super 7?
Send me your suggestions and let me know why each player should be considered. The list will be revealed on Friday, along with my “next 7” as well as players who return with fewer credentials but who I expect to play their way into all-star/all-county discussion by season’s end.

TWO PLAYERS THAT ARE AUTOMATIC,
MOUNT VERNON,
ISAIAH COUSINS,AND RANDY STEPHENS IF THEY ARE NOT THERE,YOU HAVE MADE A MISTAKE,FEDERATION CHAMPS,IF THEY DID NOT PLAY WELL IN GLEN FALLS AND ALBANY mount Vernon does not win the state or federation,”check the tape”.
Also,I like the kids from fox lane, clarkstown and Lynch from byram hills
I have to more picks, the kids from albertus Magnus and new rochelle
Peterson
Cousins-MV, Stephens-MV, Peterson-TZ, Lynch-Byram, Solano-Eastchester, McCahey-South, Sky Williams-Tuckahoe
Honorable Mention:
McGuinness-Magnus, Golden-Byram, Doughty-MV, Trawick-FL, Brian Daniels-Briarcliff
Also Kirkland Ottey-NewRo
Cousins is a lock for MV but they obviously deserve 2, potentially 3, super 7 guys. between Stevens, Marshall & Robinson 1 or 2 should be on this list. Peterson, Solano, McCahey also should be here, and I think Solano and McCahey will outshine Peterson this year. Sky will have a standout year for Tuckahoe and Lynch will for Byram but Lynch is only a junior and I personally feel a guy like Darnell Glover of Roosevelt or McGuinness is more deserving even though Lynch has the gold ball to prove me otherwise. Lynch will headline this list next year, but for now Id say its a toss up for the last spot between him, Glover, McGuiness and maybe another MV guy.
HAYWOOD
YOU TRAITOR!!
i feel the mv kids are a given, they’re just too talented to shut out of the super 7 (Cousins, Stephens, Marshall). Peterson is just phenominal altogether, people look at games in which he has like 8 points, but count the amount of shots he probably took (probably in the 6-8 range in those games) and most likely TZ won those games. Mcguinness and McCahey are also incredible players which is why they had such interest and earned scholarships. Don’t sleep on Sayre. The Byram kids are good, it seems Lynch deserves it. Whoever suggested solano obviously wasnt at the section game where he posted a solid 8 on double digit shot attempts, the only reason he averages over 20 is that he plays in the worst league in the section.
1. Isaiah Cousins ( Mount Vernon)
2. Jarrell Marshall (Mount Vernon)
3. Mike McCahey (Clarkstown South)
4. Gerard Carty (Mt. St. Michael) not really known of but supposed to be good
5. Pat Peterson ( Tappan Zee)
6. Randy Stephens ( Mount Vernon)
7. Jeff Lynch (Byram Hills)
Malik Gill-Mount
sorry carty doesnt go to to mt. st. michael anymore so for that pick i would put
4. Ryan Golden ( Byram Hills )
hooper, if you dont think solano is deserving, you obviously have not played against him. kids a great talent.
Mt Vernon had a lot of Mr Basketball players in the last several years, but for what i saw this off season, Isaiah Cousins may be better than any of them this season. He is off the charts offensively and defensively. I do not remember him much last season. I know he had a good playoff run, but this guy may be the best all around player in the state. Randy Stephens and Jarrell Marshal belong on the list. Also, there is a kid on Fox Lane that is very good and belongs on the list. Sorry, I don’t remember his name, but he may lead the section in scoring this season.
Isaiah is the truth,if you don’t know it … You will
Out of the Rockland kids McCahey is obviously deserving and I would be shocked if he was not super 7. He is going to put up scary numbers and I hear he has gotten even bigger and stronger. Mcguiness and sayer are both more deserving then peterson. Albertus has a shot at a state title and anyone who saw them over the summer would know they are both better players.
This is the talk I love.
Haywood,
Cousins reminds me a lot of Ty Stroman. Going to have a good year. That tall, crazy wingspan with a smooth handle as if he was 6’0. Going to be a treat to see MV in action.
I’ll let my boys fly under the radar. Thrilled to see the fun and gun in full swing.
maybe you should do a super 7 for small schools too, B/C/D
Have to agree rock ball. I’m not here to dump on Peterson because he is a good player, but the fact that he made it last year was questionable. He was the third best player on his own team. McCahey and Sayer are both better than Peterson. For those of you who have McGuinnes over Sayer, I have seen Albertus a few times in the past week or so and Sayer has been outplaying McGuinness.
wat about matt mezansky from mamaroneck
Rich,
Good idea. Every class can use a Super 7 plus an Hon Mention. Don’t want it to be loaded w/ kids from 2 to 3 schools.
Josh James- Stepinac PG
Guys:
josh james (stepinac) is the only jr. In the county that has d1 offers. Manhattan, iona, st. Peters, albany, stonybrook….think maybe he deserves to be there!
if you don’t know about him you certainly will this year, he is just as good as isiah and randy from m.vernon.
Can Josh really pick a team without Stepinac or Iona players? They might not win their league or perform very well on the court, but they have a tough schedule, and hey, there is tradition at stake here…
Seriously though, MVs starting 5 could easily make this list, and are probably deserving. They are really strong throughout and may be a better team without Hinds – he was very good (still is, at W Va.), but played a great deal as an individual. There were times last year where they shined with him on the bench, and they have another year of development under their belts. Having the big guy back will be a major factor.
1. Isaiah Cousins ( Mount Vernon)
2. Jarrell Marshall (Mount Vernon)
3. Mike McCahey (Clarkstown South)
7. Jeff Lynch (Byram Hills)
5. Will Trawick (Fox Lane)
6. Randy Stephens ( Mount Vernon)
7. Ryan Golden (Byram)
Cousins/Stephens deserve to be Super 7. If they aren’t, then the Super 7 has become just about stats and I doubt Josh would do something like that. These kids are the best players Sec 1 has to offer right now. They are D1 talents with big upsides. Every year they have gotten better and will have huge years.
The kid from Stepinac deserves to be here, but he won’t. He isn’t well known yet. Sounds a little lame, but fact is fact. Hell make it next year after he puts up nice numbers against excellent competition.
Personally I think Jeff Lynch is a no brainer. He is a legit point guard. More of a throwback if anything. A pass first PG with and explosive first step. Steps up the competition in the off season and gets better every year. Seen this kid a lot. Is he a D1 talent…no, but that isn’t what the super 7 is. He is one of the best players in Section 1 and he would put up the same numbers if he was in AA.
In terms of the Rockland kids you could put McCahey, Peterson, Sayre, Mcguiness and Clinton in the mix. They all do certain things very well. Nothing would be wrong with any of these kids.
Sports Guy, I value you opinion, but I am not sure I agree with your assessment of Peterson. Out of the above Rockland kids,Peterson is by far the best pure shooter. He has the quickest release and the best form. McGuiness will kill you from the outside if he has time to set up and is left open. He isn’t in the ball park of Peterson when it comes to running off screens and shooting with defenders in your face. That makes a shooter..not a stand still kid. Peterson is also the best passer out of this group and potentially the best defender. You have to give him credit. I know you expect more as most do, but he has a solid skill set. Now McCahey is by far the best athlete and best rebounder. He has a college frame and outthletes most local bigs. His weakness was his shooting and handle. Supposedly he had a great AAU season and improved. If thats the case, he will be impressive to say the least. With Sayre, I like him around the rim. His biggest weakness is his overall strength. He is frail and gets pushed around. Can’t happen at his size. If he is tougher and plays with a chip on his shoulder…he could have the best year. McGuiness/Clinton are nice PG’s. They run their teams and play smart. Latizia on TZ is a nice little PG too, but he will super 7 next year when it becomes his team.
If any junior is on that list it should be James from stepinac
Cousins
McCahey
Stephens
Paterson
Sayre
Marshall
Ottey
Josh james from stepinac will be there. Some of you are nuts! He is hands down the best jr. In the county. He has offers from several d1 schools already.
I’ve seen him play and he would be in a “super 5” if you had one.
The fact that some bloggers have not included him just goes to show how clueless westchester county is.
HRs,
Leitza balls too? He’s going to be unreal next year.
States he has been the PG for TZ since he was a freshman As you can imagine, he is tough as nails and defensively is a game changer. All over the court and fun to watch. You will get to see him this year in A.
You guys are all forgetting Reece Williams of Woodlands, he will have big year.
I agree with HRs. The Mount Vernon player’s numbers won’t be hugh because they will have many blowout games which they will sit a good portion of them. They have many players that will share the load this year so don’t expect any of them to be the leading scorers in the area.
I also agree with scary that MV has a much better team than last year. They depended too much on Jabarie Hinds, and only became good when they shared the load evenly. MV is REALLY good.
Sect 1 BB, I do not Know if Isaiah Cousins is the best player from MV in the last few years but he may be. He is a 6’4” point guard that plays both ends of the court at a very high level. I got a chance to see him twice this summer and he was awesome.
Too bad New Ro and and White Plains will be a little down this year. No Poughkeepsie too. It would be nice to see someone challenge MV in the County Center. I would be surprised if MV is not in the Federation games again.
letizia is 18 years old as a junior, thats why hes been starting since freshman year
lynch and golden both deserve it
cousins and randy stephens should and will be on there
the other three are a toss up on many players, but those 4 should be locks
David Haye- Ramapo High School
Matthew Jeffery Debold will be a surprise star for a loaded Byram Hills squad, I would definitely add him to Lynch and Golden for a possible end of season all star
boy,
Joes actually not 18, hes only 16, idk where you get your info from. And hes been starting since 8th grade, real impressive.
A basketball will be great. Pok seems to be making the most of non Sectional play. I think they will get better as the season goes.
Interested in Peeky, Byram and TZ. They play high quality ball. MV should eat AA, very complete team. Will shock National opponents!
1. stephens
2. paterson
3. cousins
4. lynch
5. sayre
6. golden
7. trawick
McCahey, Sayer, Mcguiness, and Clintion all play for the same AAU team. I have seen them play and McCahey was the go to guy everything ran through him and hes going to be really tough to stop this year. I hear he had some huge games against the best AAu teams in the area Mcguiness is a solid pg with scoring ability. Sayer is weak but he has a nose for the ball and can really jump. Those two will make Albertus very tough. Clinton is very solid guard did not play point much though because of Mcguiness. I think that McCahey defenitly deserves super 7 and and then I would go sayer after that
isaiah cousins
randy stephens
tyler sayre
mike mcCahey
Josh James
Jeff Lynch
Will Trawick
possibly Jerrel Marshal
golden (Byram) and ottey (New Ro) shouldnt even be in the discussion in the preseason.
also, for those who are extremely high on byram, i don’t see them even winning their leauge. they were beat up by Fox Lane in summer leauge and i’ve heard nothing but good things about Fox Lane so far.
Thats a different Husky. Suny has a winning basketball program here in Purchase. They now have won 2 Division 3 Titles in a row. Suny has grown and now has a great coaching staff for boys and girls.
houston,
Your information is very bias, yet very wrong. Byram played terrible that summer league game and didn’t have their full squad what so ever and still only lost on a buzzer beater layup to lose by 1.
1st of all Josh James no question top 7. How do you put some of these names that I am seeing in top 7. You must look at the competition. So many athletic players from many teams – White Plains, New Rochelle,Poughkeepsie(?),MV,private schools, etc…
B division will be the toughest in years with Albert Mag, Briarcliff, Dobbs, and Blind Brook. Blind Brook will have height, experience and talent – if they put it all together they will contend

heres a good list i found that gives a top 60 and honorable mention of kids in the NYC region for the class of 2012. based on this list section 1 best players would be
1. Glover- Roose
2.Robinson- MV
3. Peterson -TZ
4.Cousins- MV
5.McChaey- CS
6.Marshall-MV
Obviously every list has flaws, and this has some serious ones. but this list gives a good idea about how other high school basketball enthusiasts rate players. and to hooper, ive been around that eastchester, pelham, ardsley league a long time. not the strongest of leagues but some good players. but how do you expect solano to do when hes the only kid on his team with any talent whatsoever? opposing teams collapse 3 people on him whenever he touches the ball because no one else on his team can help out.
and idk how i skipped over Solano but hes ranked just in between cousins and peterson on the above list. so 3. Peterson, 4. Solano 5. Cousins…
A BALL
those were nyhoops rankings from 2 years ago last spring they changed them drastically the site is no longer up but they had cousins mcchaey stevens solano marshal sayer and peterson somewhere after that
There should really be a Super 7 for large schools and small schools. Its hard to compare players from MV to players from schools like Dobbs.
Hoops fan
Just ignore the ignorance of ‘scary” as he has ALWAYS been a Catholic league hater in Football and basketball- He loves ripping Iona in most of his posts- I have continually asked him what team he supports and for some reason over the last few seasons I have never received an answer-
