Croton-Harmon lost 22-6 to Hornell this afternoon in the Class B state championship game at the Carrier Dome. This is the third straight Class B state title for Hornell.
The Red Raiders (13-0) outgained the Tigers (11-1) 387-164 behind 148 yards rushing by Zack Bacon and 104 yards rushing and two touchdowns by Scott McKibben, who was named the game’s MVP.
After each team had a long opening drive stall, Hornell QB Dominic Scavo struck first on a 24-yard touchdown run with 7:50 left in the first half. The Red Raiders quickly added their next two touchdowns, driving 66 and 61 yards that were capped by McKibben scoring runs.
Hornell took its 22-0 lead into halftime. Its defense finished the game with three sacks and two interceptions of Croton QB Jesse Mainiero, but the senior helped spark a quick scoring drive late in the third quarter. His 32-yard pass to Brian Soares helped set up a 24-yard touchdown by Trevor Wolstencroft, who cut the Tigers’ deficit to 22-6 with 4:10 left in the third quarter.
Croton’s defensive play improved in the second half. Max Jones and Mainiero each intercepted Scavo — who is now a three-time state champ — but could not generate any further offense.
Grous also had an interception. Senior Kyle Ricciardi finished with a game-best 15 tackles (7 solo). Alex Bowser added 12 tackles and Jones, Dennis Traditi and John Brennan each had nine.
Mainiero finished 5 for 17 for 101 yards and rushed for 33 yards on 11 carries. Wolstencroft had 53 yards on eight carries. Grous was held to 0 yards on seven carries, but caught two passes for 44 yards.
