Stepinac coach Mike O’Donnell was named the New York Giants Coach of the Week. His Crusaders (8-2) beat Xaverian 27-21 in overtime on Saturday in the CHSFL AAA semifinals. They advanced to the first AAA final in program history and will try to win the league for the first time since 1955 on Friday night against perennial power St. Anthony’s.
He was named the New York Jets coach of the week during the 2007 season.
In recognition of his achievement, O’Donnell will receive a certificate of recognition signed by commissioner Roger Goodell and Giants coach Tom Coughlin and have his name announced Sunday night when the Giants host the Eagles on Sunday Night Football.
The program will receive a $1,000 check for the achievement.
“The NFL gives a donation to the program, which is probably the best thing about the award,” O’Donnell said. “But it’s also recognition for everybody here. Last year, we won a coach of the year award, but I look at it as the staff of the week. This is a staff-of-the-week award, or team of the week. That’s how I look at it.”
