The Boro’s feature some of the top players from the city, including Christ the King’s Omar Calhoun, Lincoln’s Isaiah Whitehead, Boys & Girls’ Leroy Flood, Cardinal Hayes’ Amadou Sidibe and Daniel Dingle and Nkereuwem Okoro of St. Ray’s.
The Burb’s feature several of Long Island’s top players, including Half Hollow Hills West’s Emil Blackman, who played Mount Vernon in last year’s state semifinals. Of course, the team also has a wide selection of local guys as well.
So here’s a look at the local players involved in today’s game for The Burb’s:

Just a preview of what is to come from section1,I look for mount Vernon, byram hills, poukeepsie, and the rest of se ction one to have a fantastic year.
seems like everyone is trying to host some kind on basketball “classic” or “showcase” these days. getting kind of old.
WESTCH,
THIS IS FOR 2 PEOPLE BATTLING CANCER
Overall, Long Island Basketball is not good, but Blackmon is the real deal.
Go MV!!
Haywood, I don’t know who are but you always provide balanced and insightful info. It’s an honor to have you mention byram hills with MV and Pok. Not sure they are worthy. Byram has a lot to prove they can do it with expectations. By the way byram scrimmages are Uniondale, Mamrnk, tri-scrimmage in New Roc and Stepinac. These games should get them prepared for the season.
B H BB FAN,
I REMEMBER THE RUN THEY WENT ON ,AND THE LOSE THE COACH SUFFERED,I ROOT FOR MY OLD HIGH SCHOOL,BUT I CAN SAY THAT BYRAM HILLS HAS SOME REAL GOOD BASKETBALL PLAYERS,AND I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THEM PLAY POUKEEPSIE AT THE COUNTY CENTER AT THE SLAM DUNK TORNAMENT,GOOD LUCK THIS YEAR
Poughkeepsie has a very challenging schedule this year. They lost 9 seniors from what many thought was the third best team in the state behind Mt Vernon and CTK. They are very young and are probably a year away from making noise.
Poughkeepsie – Look for them to struggle at times due to a lack of experience but they could be very tough by Feb.
Poughkeepsie was very good last year but they were hardly # 3 in the state. Mt Vernon, Christ the King, Boys and girls, Half Hollows, CBA Albany, Long Island Lutheran, Jamesville Dewitt, and St Mary’s Long Island were better. I would have loved to see Poughkeepsie play Mt St Michaels, which is the team I would think was on Poughkeepsie’s level. Poughkeepsie is a great program every year.
Isnt PK playing in “A” this year? Is Sec 1 still alligning schools geographically vs size for league play? In my opinion they kill PK every year with that weak schedule.
PK should be dominate in A. Will not have to go through Mt Vernon wich should help there chances of getting up to the falls this year.
Just starting to square things up in Newburgh. Finally have the “scandal” from the 09’ team behind us. Looking to move on and play some good bball. New elidgability rules for Varsity Bball should make it tough at first but long term the program is going to blossom.
JMOOSE – Did NFA replace their coach?
mvfan71,
Yes they did. Moved the JV coach up. Matt Brown is his name. Good guy, Newburgh kid, played on the 98’ team that went up to the falls. has been coaching in the system for over 10 years. Works for Coach K in the summer at his camps so… He has a huge mountain to climb as the BOE would not let anyone do anything in regards to the bsketball team until the coach was chosen. Well, they chose the new coach and he has 2 weeks to get everything together until try outs.
Gonna take some hard work and long hours to get everything up to speed but coach Brown will get it done.
Ok well at least all the uncertainty is out of the way and they can start rebuilding the program, with all the talent up there they should be able to rebuild fairly quick I would think.
Good luck to you guys except when you play the Vern lol. Does Middletown or Kingston have a chanc against them this year? I see on nychoops.net they have those 2 in their top 10 for westchester and upstate.
BH… a nice scrimamge for you all will be against Uniondale. Lynch will go up against Shaq Moseley. Interesting match up to say the least. Shaq will be one of the best guards he will go up against and am curious to see if he holds his own. Keep us updated.
scary Long Island basektball will have some very good kids this year. LuHi is going to be dominant with Lacey, Lee and De Nicola. Baldwin has Richardson and another very good kid, Uniondale has Mosely and two other very talented kids.. I tend to catch a lot of ball out in LI since I work out there 3 days a week. Blackmon is a tremdnous athlete, but his game needs to progress a lot more. Been watchign him for quite some time now. Hopefully he breaks out this year. He will be the main man.
Moose how is the kid Jalen White on the basketball court?
mvfan71,
Im not sure what Kingston has yet. I think top 10 for upstate/westchester is a little much as of now. Middletown lost some kids to graduation but there best player will be back. If NFA has everyone elidgable they should win the section. If not, I would say its up for grabs. Monroe sneaks in a good team every few years as well so….
As far as rebuilding NFA has some nice young players coming up. In a few years if everyone is elidgable they should be quite good again.
Kingston returns everyone and are very talented. They handled a young poughkeepsie team fairly easily over the summer.
bball,
who will carry the load offensively for Kingston? Did someone blossom over the summer? I didnt see anyone that impressed me on the varsity last year. The point guard is a nice player but unless he turned into a beast over the summer i dont see him carrying the load.
Any size to speak of?
I cant wait for hoops season to start, don’t really care about the NBA being on strike but I’m a huge High school and college hoop fan and this year should be another good one. I thought this was going to be a down year for the Vern with the loss of Hinds but they went to IS 8 and made it to the final 4 and lost to the Playaz seniors when they flew in a 6-9 270 pound monster from Georgia to play with Kyle Anderson.so let the games begin. Good luck to all.
HRs,
I’m not sure if you knew this, but I think Stepinac plays Luhi in a non-league game this year.
Mt vernon has a better team than they had last year. The would have won the IS8 tournament if the Playaz did not call in reinforcements. That is unheard of for a HS team. Only one HS team (2004 Mt Vernon) team ever won an IS8 tournament. Mt Vernon beat up Lincoln (Brooklyn), and destroyed some excellent AAU teams. They will start the season ranked #1 in the state. Isaiah Cousins is a beast.
Hoops that will be a great test for Stepinac. If you have the date/time/location, let me know. By the way speaking of Kyle Anderson, read he is going to UCLA. Nice get for the Bruins.
I saw Kyle Anderson against MV at IS 8,he is the real deal a legit 6-8 sees over any press makes all the right passes just a tough match up with a guy that big with that kind of handle. I see him as a point forward in college. A great get for UCLA is right.
Kingston will be excellent. They have everyone back from last year and are long and quick. They played together all spring, summer and fall. They will be tested and ready. NFA could struggle considering they have not been in the gym together since pretty much last season.
If NFA struggles it will not be about being in the gym. Most of the kids play summer leagues and or AAU together. The struggles will be from the new rules regarding elidgability. If you are failing more than 1 class or are under 90% attendance in any class you dont play. PERIOD. The new head coach I believe will be implementing his own rules which will require the same attendance but no failing any class. Which I believe is how it should be.
My guess is NFA struggles early because they may have to bring up a couple underclassmen. the tough schedule they have will have them prepared by sectionals.
How is Kingstons schedule? being tested in the regular season is a must nowadays. No test = no wins when it counts. When was the last time Kingson won a title? 04’?
Kingston has Albany Academy Tourney, CBA, Poughkeepsie, New Ro
CBA is always a tough one. They will zone the S out of you. Well coached as well. Not sure what New Ro has this year. Didnt see there JV last year. We were supposed to play them but they backed out early last year so no scouting from a JV standpoint.
I think PK will have some growing pains this year but will be playing in “A” as opposed to “AA” so that should help them. Always a good test as they will push the tempo.
Should be fun. Good luck! Tell the fans to keep it clean up there this year! lol….
Not sure if NFA is playing PK this year. I believe they are working on some dates.
NFA has SHEN, Schenectady, Poly Prep, Bishop Loughlin and I believe one of the LI schools as non league and possibly PK.
Poughkeepsie’s non-league schedule:
Peekskill
Kingston
Byrum Hills
White Plains or Abertus Magnus
NFA
JFK
CBA??
Peekskill is a non league game this year for PK?
PK has not been in the same league with Peekskill for the last 3 seasons. FYI coach laff was at the football game last night. he said Peekskill dropped their game. he looked pissed. they supposedly picked up a PSAL team to fill the game.
Fred Bowers and Reece Williams should have been in this game cuz the burbs team was not impressive to me
Suny Purchase won Div III lastyear (Champs). If you all know any player who wants to stay home and be a stand out for Suny Purchase let me know. The coach is from Blind Brook and he was with BB in the 80’s winning games. Keep me posted, thxs HAYWOOOOD! Lol
