Bad week for me last week, including four losses in the Top 10. In fact, as the scores were flowing into Twitter, it seemed like I picked twice as many wrong.
Hopefully, there’s enough information after three weeks to make more accurate predictions. At least that’s what I hope.
Good luck to those in the contest. Enjoy…
2011 Record
Week 3: 28-12
Top 10 (season): 21-10
Overall: 86-29
TOP 10
Friday —
Tuckahoe (2-1) at Dobbs Ferry (2-1), 7 p.m.: After suffering a loss to the defending champ, Tuckahoe continues the toughest part of its schedule against Class C’s next-best. That may be a slight to Dobbs, which proved it was 1A to Bronxville’s 1 in Week 1. That doesn’t bode well for the Tigers, who couldn’t quite keep up in last week’s defeat. PREDICTION: Dobbs 28, Tuckahoe 13
Saturday —
Rye (0-3) at Horace Greeley (3-0), 2 p.m.: For all the flak Rye has received, it continues to give itself a chance to win in the fourth quarter against good competition. But the schedule is unrelenting. It’s conceivable that this is Rye’s toughest game to date. Expect the Garnets to be there in the end again, but Greeley will prove tough to stop, especially on offense. PREDICTION: Horace Greeley 28, Rye 21
Ossining (2-1) at Sleepy Hollow (2-1), 2:30 p.m.: The 36th edition of this 56-year-old rivalry could be one of the best. The teams feature high-powered offenses that both throw and run with equal ability. They also have allowed their share of touchdowns, leading to the possibility that we’ll have a wild shootout. Right now, I just think Ossining is a little more consistent. PREDICTION: Ossining 34, Sleepy Hollow 26
Stepinac (3-0) at Mount St. Michael (1-1), 3 p.m.: The top-scoring offense in the CHSFL’ s AAA division travels to Mount, which has allowed only one more point than the top defense, Iona Prep. Offense should rule in this one. If Stepinac’s gets rolling, I’m not sure Mount can keep up. PREDICTION: Stepinac 28, Mount St. Michael 20
White Plains (0-2) at Mount Vernon (1-2), 3 p.m.: This could be the last chance for these teams and their playoff chances. White Plains, in particular, may have to win out, and it would qualify as a shocker if the Tigers don’t earn a spot in the postseason. They’ll have to match the will of Mount Vernon, which plays hard and hits even harder on defense. That unit will have to force a couple turnovers to keep pace with White Plains’ attack. PREDICTION: White Plains 20, Mount Vernon 12
John Jay-East Fishkill (3-0) at New Rochelle (3-0), 3 p.m.: I’ll probably take some flak for this from our Dutchess friends. Although it’s a matchup of 3-0 teams — and although John Jay has played terrific football so far — New Ro is a level above the competition according to those I’ve talked to. The Huguenots have been (without hyperbole) impossible to score on. And even if John Jay can make the impossible possible, New Ro’s offense appears to have enough firepower to respond in kind. I expect the Huguenots to set themselves apart from the Section 1 pack on Saturday. PREDICTION: New Rochelle 28, John Jay-EF 7
Nyack (2-1) at Pearl River (3-0), 3 p.m.: The question here is much like the one posed in TZ’s matchup with Somers. It’s not about if Pearl River can win at first, it’s about whether it can compete with an elite Class A program. The Pirates enter the game having not allowed a defensive touchdown. Nyack’s defense has been stingy against stiffer competition, and I expect that preparation to serve the Indians well. PREDICTION: Nyack 27, Pearl River 10
Mahopac (2-1) at Scarsdale (1-2), 3:30 p.m.: Scarsdale has struggled the last two weeks, especially on defense. The Raiders have allowed 76 points to John Jay and Clarkstown South and will now be posed with trying to solve a Mahopac offense that proved it was legit last week. The Indians run game is based largely on finesse and speed, which might be easier for Scarsdale to contend with. Either way, one of last year’s former playoff teams will prove who has rebuilt quicker. PREDICTION: Mahopac 21, Scarsdale 14
Clarkstown North (3-0) at Ramapo (2-1), 3:30 p.m.: North, understandably, feels great about its 3-0 start. Its future looks bright, but challenges await. This is certainly one. Ramapo has proved it has a dangerous team, led by the brilliant running of Kevin Jocelyn. The difference with North is that it has speedy players to counter Jocelyn and co. PREDICTION: Clarkstown North 24, Ramapo 14
John Jay (2-1) at Harrison (2-1), 7 p.m.: These teams provided a high-quality, dramatic Class A quarterfinal last year. They have certainly evolved since, but the evolution is a work in progress. John Jay has adjusted to throwing the ball less; Harrison is trying to figure out if it will toss it more. The Huskies have a good history of slowing down the spread offense. They have also had two weeks to regroup from Week 2’s loss to Poughkeepsie. PREDICTION: Harrison 21, John Jay 14

Something to think about, New Ro can run up the score if they wanted to but they don’t. Don’t be fooled by the points scored tally. And it is no coincidence that teams can’t hold onto the ball when they play New Ro. So this short field nonsense New Ro has is not because they were lucky. Also, Troy had the most explosive offense last year and put up a total of 20 points against New Ro. This New Ro defense is better than last year. I would be surprised if JJ can put up 14 points, and if they can, lots of luck holding New Ro to less than 14 points. As I said, their offense can put up a lot of points if they wanted to.
No. Julian is two or three years younger than me. I don’t recognize Cappelli’s name. I played some baseball and basketball with the QB on Carmel’s last Section 1 championship football team.
Haywood,
Thank you very much. Pok will need it, the rainy, muddy conditions we’ll see tomorrow gives the advantage to TZ and the single wing…
Sisophous,
Good point about New Ro. I’m a big fan of the Hugenots but JJ is a great program who will be looking for respect. I think they’ll give New Ro all they can handle and then some. I will be highly surprised if New Ro handily defeats them and will give the de facto AA chip to them right after!
Can anyone confirm that the New Ro John Jay game is at 3 PM? I’ve seen wrong start times at Max Preps listed, they even listed an earlier game to be played on a Friday when it was played on a Saturday. Max Prep lists this game to start at 3:30. Most games start at 1 PM on a Saturday so not sure what to believe.
Clarkstown north At Ramapo
This will be a good game Clarkstown North had a very good team last year only to beat ramapo 24-12. Ramapo players have spent time in the weight room and track out side, even some of there linemen are fast, dont let height fool you they were putting some numbers up in the weight room, the center and both guards are very strong, they were pushing the big yorktown line around. and trust me yorktown up front is HUGE. at the scrimmage, cnorth had problems with spring valley, but ramapo destroyed them, also some mistakes, this will be a close game, Ramapo has speedsters this year that did not play last year, so watch out!
BEAST

THE MOST HATED!!
Prince… I obviously agree with you somewhat about flipping the teams in the ranking, but don’t call Stepinac’s win over Iona a fluke. It was anything but. Sometimes you have give credit where credit’s due. Give them some respect for once. Be fair.
STATES
WHAT YOU MIGHT NOT REALIZE NEW RO SECONDARY IS BETTER THEN LAST YEAR SECONDARY AS A GROUP!!.. THERE OLB ARE BETTER THEN LAST YEAR!!.. THE MIDDLE IS A DIFFSTORY MANNS WAS A FLAT OUT BEAST!! JJEF WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET THE CORNER IN THIS GAME

YOU CALL YOUR SELF PRINCE DOES That mean you are poor and you look like a frog. LLLLLLOOOOOLLLLL
Prince,
JJEF wont need the edge. They are coming downhill at you per Dutchess policy. They will be looking for the SOFT spots in your zone in the passing game!
Josh
When I was saying fluke it was more towards over the past 10 years Iona winning 8 out 10 years I will agree that they (step) won the game on the field!!!!
But it would be just the same if Mv beat new Ro. It could be considered a fluke year!! Do anyone disagree!!!!! 8)
No Prince! Nothing is coincidence!!!

I agree. Rye wins this one.
Josh
The main problem that I have with the Stepinac crowd is that they are pounding their chest off of that ONE win that they have had over the last 10 year and – Plus they act like they have been a force in the CHSFL over the years- Kudos that they have know joined the big leagues and are playing in the AAA- But lets all sit back and remember that Iona has won a CHSFL AAA championship and have been to two other CHSFL AAA finals plus they have been to two other Semifinal games since 2004. So Stepinac needs to build up their resume before anyone from Stepinac can come on here and tell me that they are the better program- Also right now their is no comparison between the Frosh, Sophomore and Junior classes – Iona has a clear talent advantage.
Thanks Haywood.
Prince, that is the dumbest thing I ever seen on this blog..what that coached did at the cemetary.
Well one of the dumbest,
:)
Stepinac is the better team (over iona) this year, so the rankings will sort themselves out when they meet. Regardless, St Anthonys wins the CHSFL pretty easily in 2011, they are flat out better than either of our CHSFL representatives. 2012 may be Iona’s year when their underclassmen develop.
I agree with Josh on last year, stepinac was clearly better, although they played a very weak schedule that helped keep them healthy and unchallenged – a benefit Iona did not have. 2011 is a different story, they are both playing good schedules.
Prince, I am working on a new protocol all “new bloggers” must pass…
1 – If they say they are new..they fail
2 – If they say they have no allegiances..they fail
3 – If they show with a new name and talk the SOS.. they fail
4 – If they cant recognize the CHSFL gets special treatment..they fail
5 – If they h a t e..they fail
6 – If they say someone knows nothing about football but cant offer any reasons why…THEY FAIL –
You have some more to add???
IonaPower
Stepinac is not necessarily a better program, just a better team in 2010 and 2011. I am by no means a Stepinac Fan, just an observer.
IP is young, so 2012 will likely look different, although St A’s has a strong group coming up as well. Iona tends to do very well, however, with less size, depth, and overall power than St A’s. On paper they should not be competitive with them, but to their credit they get a ton out of their players and hold up very well.
Just
LOL! very good and insightful post.
MY picks:
Greeley
New Ro
Ossining
Dobbs
White Plains
Stepinac
Nyack
Mahopac
Ramapo
Harrison
Scary, you know how I do..
haywood, who let you in???
Any insight on why Iona no longer plays New Rochelle on Thanksgiving day? It was an annual thing for decades. I used to wake up on Thanksgiving morning and tune in the game on WPIX which began at 10AM. At first I heard that New Rochelle may have become too big for Iona but now that I see Iona is ranked among the top teams in NY State, that is obviously not the reason.
Perhaps the structure of the league was redone for continuity throughout the leagues and not for tradition. I tell you the New Rochelle Iona games were always fun to watch. Just wondering why they did away with this tradition?
Prince, this JJEF team is better than 2009 for two reasons. They have a very good tail and #12 is pretty good too. Then of course you got …...HENDO!!!!!!!!!!
HENDO is hungry and wants to be fed!!!!
I can see this New Ro team being better than last year. But 2009??? Not sure, that team was stacked with household names!!!
Hope this game doesnt disappoint!
Rye isn’t beating Greely, are you nuts?
Stallworth had 13 touches vs Sleepy and 28 vs Ossining. Was he hurt in the Sleepy game?
just
haaahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahhaahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we have too police this joint!!!
the coach was crazy!!.... but we have had crazier coaches come here!!..(getting caught in ther female emotions) lol!!!
just are sure!!!!.... jjef is better then 09???
that o-line was very good!!.... you sure?
river
cramping
iona power
i agree with you they’re getting elite respect off of one season!! (stepinac)
pRINCE,
Did Miller ,the fb, also cramp and miss time in the game?
siso
i keep asking the same question!!.. i think it’s bad for business!!
Prince, someone has to protect the players!!!!! Who better(to protect) than us??
YES, I am sure!! ( maybe,
) I saw JJEF 2009, saw North Roc 2009 3 times, saw New Ro 2009 4 times.
Saw JJEF live 2011 0 times; New Ro 2011 0 times..
Saw JJEF on video for appprox 5 mins vs Scarsdale and seen Hendo highlight tape many times. New Ro doenst have many returning starters from last yr.
So the point, 7 pt game, New Ro. If New Ro wins in a blow out, like I said, we driving to the Dome, and haywood can meet us up there by way of the grey hound… lolololol!!!!
river
miller , qb, anthony, stallworth all cramp up pretty bad!!.. especially the qb didn’t play majority of the whole second half!!! ... if they didn’t cramp i think they beat sleepy by 2 td’s
Prince,
Why did you pick Sleepy over Ossining?
Prince, help me out here….
YTL we started in 8/1; HS and College mid to late august.. I played in a ton of games and practices and cant remember ever sitting out because of cramps!!! Maybe dehydration and start hallucinating – especially YTL – early August lolol, but HS????
Power Drinx?
