With school out for summer, the camp schedule heats up quickly. North Rockland returns to the field today, and Iona Prep and Horace Greeley open their camps tomorrow.
North Rockland and a handful of other Rockland schools will be on the field through Saturday, when the camp ends with a five-way scrimmage between the Red Raiders, Spring Valley, Clarkstown North, Tappan Zee and Suffern. I plan on stopping by tomorrow, when North Rockland, Clarkstown North and TZ work out between 4 and 7.
Iona Prep opens its camp tomorrow around 4:30. It will feature the Gaels along with New Rochelle, Rye and Woodlands. The action will peak on Saturday with scrimmages, including Iona vs. New Ro, but I’ll probably stop by tomorrow as well. There could be some 7 on 7 work in the evening. (I’m away at a bachelor party this weekend.)
Horace Greeley will host its Advanced Skills Camp beginning Thursday afternoon. It will run through Sunday morning. The Quakers’ camp only includes players/teams in the program.
Lastly, White Plains will open its Tiger Camp on Saturday. It will run through Wednesday night, from 5-8:30 p.m. White Plains, Byram Hills, Edgemont, Westlake and Rye Neck will be there throughout the week. They will be joined by Sleepy Hollow and Mount Vernon on Wednesday. I’ll be back to check out the teams early next week.
If there’s anything else I should know on tap, shoot me an e-mail at jthomson@lohud.com.

Rye is going to whip Iona Prep and New Rochelle -
10580 – you are joking right?
10580
Can you elaborate on why and how Rye will whip Iona and New Rochelle- I have been to the Iona camp the last 5 years and I have never seen Rye get the best of Iona or New Rochelle and that was with Rye having Ramalho, Eck etc..
Hmm Rye smacking around New Ro and Iona Prep, an interesting thought.
What sport, CHESS??

Are you for real if rye line is suspect!!....they can be expecting!!!...theyre roughest season!!!... They’re skill pos. I wasn’t impressed!!....
I always enjoy watching Rye but they’re losing too many great athletes; O’C, Connor, Turco, etc to be anything but a rebuilding year for the G’s. Keep an eye on up and coming QB, Santangelo. He comes from a long, proud and tough family of gifted athletes. If he’s called into the game we could be seeing some the future of Rye football.
On iona
I know some santangelo (Jimmy) he is tough guy!!.....nails!!..... I wonder if any relations!!!
Another Santangelo, thats great!! But it could be a long year for the young Garnet.
Santangelo is related to Archibald, right?
husky, you seem 2 be a expert on rye, lol
Josh,
When you say Iona and New Rochelle will be scrimmaging, does that mean full go 11 on 11??
10605
nah they cn’t do full 11 on 11 i believe!!
Lil Pelham – I have alot of friends from Rye, plus you always want to know what your nemesis is up too,
Josh – - Since the Yonker Schools are not going to present any teams this year, will the Committee re-do the schedules?
Prince,
if not 11 on 11 and by scrimmage im assuming josh doesnt mean 7 on 7, then what is it? like 9 on 9? no tackles and no defensive ends?
10605
EXACTLY

After Iona Prep won the CHSFL AAA Championship the Old Guard from the CHSFL felt that by Iona attending and scrimmaging in camps like the Champions camp and Iona Camp that it gave them an advantage- So they put the kaboosh on 11-11- They can only have I believe 9 players out on the field- The old guard does not like it when the Iona’s and Stepinac’s do well in the CHSFL- Of Iona and Stepinac continue to do well I can see them cutting down on the 7-7 camps-
Thats ridiculous. As a player I used to look forward to these camps as did my teammates. They were always a lot of fun to be able to scrimmage teams in June. CHSFL in my opinion is the best league in the state (PPR, agree to disagree) but it is poorly ran. Why can public schools compete in these scrimmages and not the CHSFL schools?? Also here is my main problem with the league. Why is the championship games now always in Long Island?? in 2008, Iona was the 1 seed in AAA, Stepinac was 1 seed in AA and I believe Cardinal Hayes was the 1 seed in the A division. All three were the highest seeds in their respected divisions and yet all three championship games were played at Mitchell Field in Long Island. None of those three teams are from Long Island! why cant they rotate every year. 1 year its at a Long Island field, the next year a westchester field, the 3rd year a staten island field. Or one neutral field such as ARMY would be a great place for the championships.
More likely the teams will scrimage 11 on 11 with just uppers. Linemen eill engage, not suppose to tackle or touch the QB
IONA POWR
i agree the gate keepers couldn’t handle iona/stepinac getting better!.... it amazing that we can get use too the same team winning it all ( st. anthonys) i think it’s not a good look for your league!!..... i dn’t care what anyone say especially in new york!!!!
10605
but i do agree that the game should bounce between 2-3 location!!... the westchester fans should have the apportunity to support ther local chsfl schools!!
lol agree to disagree is pretty accurate!!
just
iona can not have have 11 players on the field vs a offense or defense they have to filled 9 players only!!
just facts

“Why can public schools compete in these scrimmages and not the CHSFL schools??”
-Because of short sightedness of some of the schools/administrators/coaches beleiving this extra practice time is UNFAIR…It’s a league and all memebers within should conduct their business exactly the same, otherwise they are over emphasizing football….In effect, attempting to dumb down the better programs because they are willing to work hard and win too much.
“Why is the championship games now always in Long Island??”
-Most probably, MONEY…The CHSFL wants to play the Championship games at a Collegiate or Neutral site, of similar standards…Mitchell has to be less money than Hofstra because Hofstra blows Mitchell away. Years ago, it was held at St. John’s(Queens), but St. John’s gave up football…1 year they played the Championships at an unworthy site, Iona College…In ‘06, they played the Championships at Fordham…So, it’s not like it’s exclusively on LI…. Now, if their League administrators were really foward thinking they would follow suit of the PSAL, and try to, at least, play the AAAChampionship game at Yankee Stadium or Citi Field….
Lil Pelham – I have alot of cousins from Rye, okay you got me , but there my friends and my spies! haha
husky, looks like rye has leaking
family is always a good source of info but your grandparents and uncles/aunts like rye lol
Its all good! haha, Lil Pelham – what do you think of the re-scheduling if it occurs. Will your schedule be affected?
Husky
I heard Harrison is losing a key player to Somers, what’s the info on that?
husky, ill be disappionted if they change the schedule alot. im find if pelham plays new teams instead of yonkers. they shoudnt change too much, just substitube for the yonkers games and ranks
Lil pel
and put them against some of the tougher teams in class A rye, Harrison , Pok , Greeley!!.... I think the whole schedule gets change because Yonkers schools wins and loses and common opponent points are not awarded/0r subtracted so I can see change the seeding!!!!!
They change in rankings can push pel up the food chain!
Mamaroneck, Stepinac, and Truman at Mamaroneck sunday through wednesday
tiger
what time and wher at???
10605,
There are only two football teams in westchester county that compete in the CHSFL, Iona and Stepinac.
Most of the league is located in Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island (both nassau and suffolk counties). Also Majority of the schools are Staten island, Manhattan, and southern Bronx. The games are located in Long Island to be considered “neutral” as it is the midway meeting point for all CHSAA Business.
Another example is the coaches meetings for alot of the sports take place in queens at member schools since Queens is the mid point on the map. So I for one have no problem with the game being out on long island. I just hate when the Long Island schools cry and play the “no one likes us, no one wants us to be here card” like I’ve heard a few coaches say, when its far from the truth (in reality the fact they’re almost all co-ed while alot of the schools in Bronx/Manhattan/Westchester/Staten Island are single gender schools is the problem with them, not location or success rate. Gender affects enrollment and it gets tricky at times from there)
Also alot of CHSAA member sports are “coach leagues” where the coaches act as the governing body, not a chair person. When you look back at archived blogs about how the section I fans are annoyed with that Jennifer lady that serves as the current section I chairman, the CHSAA sees that and continues its tradition of having the coaches have a powerful say in what goes on. Granted there are Chairmen but they just act as the mediator, while the coaches make proposals, vote on rule changes, and basically do the scheduling and alignment, etc.
I heard Sleepy Holow spent a couple days at the Fordham Camp this weekend practicing and Scrimmaging with some pretty big schools. Central High from Springfield Mass, Soyosett from Long Island, Masuic from Ct along with a few others. Any word on how they did?

The CHSFL has a president of league , who is not a coach. He oversees how the league runs. League has an executive committee which represents all the areas in the league[ made up of AD’s] Some of them are Coaches as well. The president & the Executive committee answers to the principles council which meets two or three times a year. The head of principles council is from a Long Island school. He is in charge of league. The league is not run by the coaches.
The coaches do meet every week during season [ Monday nights], They do vote on recommendations for league. But there vote does not always mean they will get there way. These meetings are held in central locations that can hold meeting. The coaches input does hold weight but the committees must approve any changes.
11 – Hayes, Iona , Stepinac, Mount, Fordham, Xavier, Holy Cross, Farrell, Chaminade, Xaverian, Ford? all have all male students. 9- St Anthony’s, Trinity, St Peter’s, St Joes by Sea, St Francis, Spellman, CTK, Kellenberg, St John the Baptist are co ed. I am not sure what difference that makes in what you are referring to. There are very strong & weak schools on both sides of student population.
Mitchell Field has been used for Championship game for last few years because of following reasons.
1. Stands on both sides—Safety- crowd control
2.it is available on the Sat – many teams in CHSFL play on Thanksgiving Day. If game was played on Sunday those teams would have to play Sunday – Thursday[ short week]
3. LI Championships have Hofstra on Sat Date
4. Fordham University is not always available on that date- Stands only on one side- no locker rooms available
5. Field has Four Locker rooms- double header- multiple games
6. Mitchell Field- Cost- [ Cheap]- multiple games
7. Yankee stadium- all gate receipts would go to Yankees. [Lost revenue]
Schools do complain about the game being on Long Island for past few years. It does hurt crowd sometimes. Fordham is the only facility on NY side of bridge that can handle an event like this, but stands are on one side. It make security a tougher issue.[ But not impossible] $10 to park car at Fordham & no locker rooms available are also negatives.
ZZZZzzz,
DEAD ZONE
prince, i prefer the schedule the way it is now but i would welcome playing 1 or 2 top teams.
