A story I missed while away over the weekend is among the saddest to hit the Section 1 basketball community in a while. Twenty-one-year-old Marcquis Abney was killed early Sunday morning in a car crash when he crashed into a utility pole in Mount Vernon.
Abney was a reserve point guard for Bob Cimmino on Mount Vernon’s 2006 and 2007 Class AA state champions. He also played running back for Ric Wright on the football team.
On Tuesday, at a candlelight vigil held at the scene of the accident, Cimmino told The Journal News that Abney was a young man with a strong character who was well-liked by teammates, classmates and teachers. Cimmino also said he and his coaching staff were devastated by Abney’s loss.
“It’s been devastating to the entire coaching staff,” Cimmino said. “Everybody has been crying.”
Funeral services will be held March 10 at Greater Faith Temple at 4214 White Plains Road in the Bronx at 233rd Street. The wake will be from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral will start at 7 p.m.
The Knights will return to the court on Friday with a member of the program on their minds. They face Mahopac at 5 in the Class AA semifinals at the County Center.
