A week from tomorrow, during halftime of the Class AA championship game, Henry Taylor and the Lincoln Hall boys basketball team will be presented with the annual Dennis T. Hurlie Sportsmanship Award from the Westchester County officials association.
The United finished the regular season as the No. 3 seed in the Class C tournament and will play No. 2 Haldane on Monday night at 6:30 in the semifinals.
Here’s the complete release on the award:
The Westchester County chapter of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials announces that a ceremony during the halftime of the 12:00 noon Sunday, March 6, 2011 New York State Public High School Athletic Association Section I Class AA Finals Basketball game at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, New York will be presenting the ninth annual Dennis T. Hurlie Sportsmanship Award to the Lincoln Hall Boys Basketball Team, head coach Henry Taylor and athletic director Patrick Reilly. This award goes to a high school boys varsity basketball team and head coach in Westchester County that has demonstrated hard work, fair play, cohesiveness, team spirit, and sportsmanship. It is with great pleasure that Lincoln Hall and head coach Henry Taylor be selected for this prestigious award.
In 2002, the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials Westchester County Board 52 decided to create a sportsmanship award in honor of Dennis Hurlie, who is a former president of the board, a dedicated member for over 37 years and a very familiar sight here at Westchester County Center while officiating Section I Tournament Games for boys basketball. He exemplified the ideals of the association by promoting the respect for the game, maintaining the highest standards of basketball officiating and, most importantly, encouraging the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.

A teriffic achievement for Lincoln Hall, the Players, Coaches and AD. Wins and losses fade from memory over time, but the lessons we learn about teamwork and sportsmanship playing HS sports last forever. Dennis Hurlie used to live around the corner from me in White Plains, a great man who always maintained high standards and fair play. Congraulations Lincoln Hall!
Congratulations to Coach Taylor and all the young men of Lincoln Hall. There are terrific life lessons that can be learned if the coach is willing to teach them and the players are prepared and willing to receive them. Coach Taylor has done these young men a great service that will help shape their lives.
Congratultions Henry and good luck in the Section 1 tournament.
??, Do you know what type of atrocities everyone on the team committed? Because I’m pretty sure you have no idea what they’ve done or come from to be put into Lincoln Hall. You can be put into Lincoln Hall for truancy. Every time I’ve played at Lincoln Hall I’m greeted with respect and sportsmanship, more so than most schools in the area. Have you ever seen Lincoln Hall play or are you just some loser in his 40’s trying to take away accomplishments from kids; accomplishments you probably never could achieve. I never write on these blogs but was compelled to when i saw the ignorant statement you wrote. These kids have made great strides from where they came from and it’s sad you don’t see that. I’m sure you’ve lead a perfect life. As far as I’m concerned this award is overdue to a great program doing great things.
??, no i’ll be playing on the court where you really get to know these kids, not just sitting on the sidelines. Seriously though, grow up where these kids grew up and you see what decisions you make. Stop throwing stones you know nothing. And you really can go there for truancy but honestly you seem like a blockheaded person who always think s hes right about everything and has never experienced anything. Keep going through life with your ignorant attitude and believing you know everything because it’s such a great quality, which I’m sure has gotten you a lot of friends. Or you could just be a bitter, lonely old guy who needs to belittle others to feel better about your meaningless life. It’s usually the most righteous who have done the worst, I’m curious to see the list of your transgressions. I’m not responding back to anymore posts because the five minutes I’ve wasted responded back your ignorance could have been used a lot more constructively, like helping kids who have been given nothing. Have fun living with such a poor outlook on life.
Josh, it would be a shame if you leave up the comments made by ??. I’ve worked with many kids from Lincoln Hall and most of the residents are there for reasons not even close to what ?? alludes to.
I played against Lincoln Hall twice this year, although they may have bad reputations in their past they sure do become mature men once they arrive at Lincoln Hall. Well deserved.
The coaches at Lincoln Hall are obviously doing something right. I believe some of the residents at Lincoln Hall are there because their parents/guardians were too unfit to care for them. By showing these kids a better way, they are helping all of society.
I have had to watch games at Lincoln Hall because our HS team was there. Minding my own business, I was verbally attacked and threatened physically by several wild, out of control, venomous, adolescent females. There was no control by the staff.
Never experienced anything like that in my life.
I do not care what your tough background was, if you can not conduct yourself in a public setting you are NO GOOD.
The coaches do their best under the daunting circumstances, but let’s not make this team anything any other Section 1 Team should model their program after!
Shout out to Henry Taylor and Terrence Smith, both Peekskill graduates who have done great things with these kids!! Both have coached Football and Basketball at Lincoln Hall since they started the Sports program and are great coaches!!

thank you for adding some sense to this topic. people like the aptly named “idiot” attempt to put a spin on what is essentially a jail. Giving them an award of this type would be comical if it were not true. Next lets award Rikers Island the good citizenship award then complain when somebody calls us on it!
I always thought that Lincoln Hall only had male residents. Am I wrong? And the boys on the Basketball team must have deserved the award or the officials would not have awarded it to them.
i was one of the players from lincoln hall that year an i think about those games everyday i wish i can jus go back in time in re do it all i love you guys
