Obviously, we weren’t at the Ossining scrimmage on Thursday night, but a good friend of the blog, Trevor Gill, a student at Ossining High School, passed along one of his reports, titled “Inside the O.”
Trevor’s report focuses on Ossining, but it gives you an indication about who are the key players as the team retools.
First things first, Dan Ricci told me junior transfer Brian Connolly has won the QB competition. You can get a good look early in Trevor’s video about Connolly’s ability as he tosses a couple scores. “He’s going to be very good,” Ricci said. “He’s definitely the starter.”
Ironically, it’s one of his former competitors, Kevin Guzman, who has become a top receiving option. He catches one of the touchdowns from Connolly in the video.
Unlike years past, the running backs will shuttle in and out by committee. Alex Anthony rushes for a TD in the highlights, but others, like Steve Candeleria and Louis Rodriguez, will rotate in. “It’s not like what we’re used to,” Ricci said. “But I think they’re all out to prove themselves.”
The returning player with the most experience for Ossining is OL/DL Jordan Archible. He’s playing DT at defense at the moment, and pretty impressively at that. On the first play on defense in the scrimmage, Archible busts through the offensive line and sacks the quarterback.
Ricci said his team played pretty even with Horace Greeley, which enters the season as one of the top teams in Class A. Not bad for a rebuilding team, one he believes can exceed its relatively modest expectations.
“It’s a competitive team,” he said. “I think we’re going to surprise people”
Thanks to Trevor for passing along his video. Feel free to check out some of his other reports on YouTube.
