So with the confusion recently about when North Rockland would play New Rochelle Week 1, I called Joe Casarella tonight in search of some clarity. The Section 1 website had scheduled the game for Sept. 11 but many of you and a couple other schedules I had seen listed the date as Sept. 12.
The game is, in fact, Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1:30 p.m. at North Rockland. Casarella confirmed the date and time. He said his program will not play on Sept. 11.
If you’re a big football fan who doesn’t mind driving, you can now catch all three of the biggest games of Week 1. Start at Iona Prep at 1:30 on Saturday and then cruise up the Hutch to Harrison at 4:30. Then you have to skip Week 1 of the NFL season, but you can now catch a rematch of the Class AA final on Sunday.

Great way to kick off the season
Ha I knew about this in the middle of July ‘cause I talked to Lynch
Wait sorry middle of this month
why wont casarella let his program play on september 11th?
Is there super 11 this year?
@?
He won’t let the guys play on Sept. 11 because that day has added significance for Coach now I’ve never asked him but I suspect he had friends who died on that day so he won’t play if he could help it on Sept 11
although i do understand that, i feel like hes making other teams and coaches look bad by doing this. If every team took off September 11th (which isnt a bad idea considering all that happened that day 9 years ago) then it would be fine but to pretty much be one of the only teams in the area playing that day instead of 9/11 i dont think is the right move.
? says,
I agree with you. Plus, what opposing coach would not consent to this request? That’s why I think Section 1 should ban all games scheduled on this date or expect the games be played as scheduled. It’s a difficult situation and I agree it makes other schools look less patriotic. I don’t know what the answer is frankly. Good point though.
Yes, it is all together fitting and proper to have the game played on Sunday, September 12th. Josh Thomson, what is your prediction of the score? Will this be a repeat of last year’s playoffs when New Rochelle won 38-0. Or will be score be more like 50-0 whereas New Rochelle was a State Finalist at the Syracuse Dome last November of 2009. New Rochelle’s starting quarterback, Butts, currently has an interview on the Internet in which Butts is interviewed for three minutes. Butts says a lot, as the team leader. Butts played in the State finals in 2009 so he has great experience. Regarding North Rockland, their super star from last year, Sal Sula, graduated. So, Josh, in the final analysis what is your prediction of the score on September 12th?
Lets not knock Coach Casarella for doing the right thing. If other Coaches want to play that day, it is their issue. If it makes them look less patriotic, again, it is their issue.
Great job Coach Casarella!
Sorry Hank. No predictions until next week. I’m not going to spoil this one.
Hey Josh,
Where is Nyack and North Rockland scrimmaging on Thursday?
Just the fact your a jock sniffer. Most teams are playing on the 12th because of the Jewish holidays
Nyack and North Rockland are at White Plains on Thursday. North Rockland is at New Canaan (CT) on Saturday morning.
Husker98, I do like sniffing your Mom’s jock, guitly! lol!
Did you read above, Casarella CHOSE not to play that day, now get off my “Jock”.
2 points to make on this topic:
1) BOCES makes the schedule and if the home team wants to move the game the visiting team must agree on it, if not its played on that day or you forfeit. So I applaud Coach C for his forthought, but it was really Coach D who had the final word, so I think he need to be applauded also!
2)Concidering week 2 is a very short week(Jewish Holiday) with only 2 practice days before the next game, I dont know if this was a very smart move for the kids to only get a couple of days rest.
again i would be applauding him if he got the entire section to abide by this but for him to be one of the only ones out he does not deserve an applauding.
Just a fact,
so if coach cas is doing “the right thing” then all other teams in the section including the catholic schools (stepinac lost a coach that day) are not doing the right thing? btw i am a coach cas fan and a red raider fan but i just dont agree with this one move.
To me there is no wrong move. There is the whole other side to the argument, that to play on 9/11 honors those that have fallen by continuing to do as “we” do. I certainly undestand how some could feel that way.
I personally like Coach Casarella’s move, but to each his own. Most who are old enough from the lohud region knew someone or knew of someone that died that day. I would be for all games not to be played on that day, but who the f am I? Just my opinion and regardless of what anyone thinks, I say Coach Casarella should be applauded in honoring those who are no longer with us.
I played for Montclair State in 01 and we played that weekend. We played to honor our fallen Heros. Never letting those animals win by changing our lives and traditions.
I think Coach Cas will go down as one of the greatest coaches this area will ever see. He understands what is important as a educator, as well a great coach. I respect his decision to ask New Rochelle to play on Sunday & not on 9 / 11.
Here at Stepinac, we have a different take on this day. We lost a close friend & a great coach on 9/11 /2001. We cried that day & still get very upset when we talk about it. We wear his number #70 on our helmets & clothes every day to make sure everyone never forgets what happened that day. We are keeping Coach Joe Riverso alive here in our community. Unfortunately to many people just look at it as just another day. We have played on 9/11 a few times in past few years & we make sure our players know the importance of what they have & to take advantage of every moment they are here. There are many lessons to learn for these kids & it is our job as coaches to make sure that we teach them. As long as I am coaching I will make sure that our kids know what happened that day & how it changed my life & the lives of so many families & friends forever.
I applaud Coach Cas for standing up for what he thinks is the right thing to do & I am glad to see Coach D from New Rochelle agreeing to it for same reason.
Good Luck to all the teams opening next weekend
God Bless America
We will never forget !
whats there not to agree with?
How can anyone criticise the move that coach cassarella made?
Its not like coach D was upset about the move, both sides agree so whats the problem?
When was the last time new Ro beat up no rock in no. Rock?
Prince Purple Rain,
Friday, Sept. 10, 2004 (didn’t play on Sept. 11) – Ray Rice scored all 35 points in a 35 – 7 win. An interception return by Rice was called back.

It’s very, very weak of you to delete my post just because you don’t like what I wrote. I didn’t violate the user agreement in any way. You can’t expect to keep something like this secret in today’s age of modern technology. As soon as the kids got back the other day they were texting and posting on facebook. Get a grip Josh.
OD,
Geat post. I am going to have to start rooting for Stepinac based on that post alone. Good luck with the 2010 season.
