This week and next week several area football teams will start to kick the tires on the 2010 football season, which begins for real on Friday, Aug. 20.
WHITE PLAINS — This is the first stop. The Tigers will host Westlake and Rye Neck this week, but on Thursday evening at 5 it will turn into a party of six. Those three will be joined by defending Class A champ Roosevelt, Sleepy Hollow and Mount Vernon. I’m going to stop by Thursday to check it out, especially Roosevelt, Sleepy and Mount Vernon, which I haven’t seen yet.
NEW ROCHELLE — The following week New Ro will host its annual weeklong Champions Camp from Monday, Aug. 2, to Friday, Aug. 6. New Rochelle will be joined by the following: Harrison, Tuckahoe, Ardsley, Eastchester, Roosevelt and Briarcliff. I’m not sure what time camp starts, but it’s usually in the afternoon.
I’ll likely head to New Ro on Monday and Tuesday. After that I’ll be gonezo — off on vacation for a couple weeks. But don’t fear. I’ll make sure the conversation keeps flowing while I’m gone and I’ll also return in time for the first day of practice.
The only other event I know of during my vacation is a 7 on 7 at Dobbs Ferry on the afternoon of Aug. 12. Anyone know of others?

Look out for the Harrison huskies at new rochelle camp especially at Tanner knox and Steven Ricciardi,i hear these kids can be all-state material
Hopefully Harrison will show up this time. They didn’t show up for the White Plains 7 on 7. I think they may have forgot to notify White Plains as well. Nice!
oh wow, westlake and rye neck are going to get stomped on at that white plains camp
I was interested to see what the most popular recruiting websites thought of our local prospects, so I looked at Rivals, ESPN and Scout’s NY State rankings. Kieran Borcich and Donnie Simmons were both ranked very highly on all three sites. Borcich was ranked #2, #3 and #3, respectively. Simmons was #11, #7 and #6.
No other local players were featured on all three sites. Tyrell Goodman and Jordan Lucas were mentioned on ESPN and Rivals. Stephen Shoemaker was rated on Scout and had a long list of 1A and Ivy league schools that had shown interest, though no offers. Here are the other local kids that appeared on one of the sites:
Rivals-
DE from Scarsdale Ianni Drivas
Scout-
Mike Longo Iona Prep LB
ESPN-
Donny Davis Nyack RB
Vernon Constant Nyack RB
Romarick Dalce SV WR
Shaquille Gould SV QB
Aaron Morganstern RCK RB
Matt Tralli Croton Harmon CB
Joe Simon Byram Hills DE
Darius Lofton Gorton RB
Tanner Knox Harrison FB
Michael Louis Albertus Magnus
Travon Malone Iona Prep CB
Mount St Michael had the most players listed of any local school (3); Brian Davis OG, Malcolm Bowser RB, Anthony Sosa OG
Any word on whether or not Bronxville is attending the New Ro camp? It would be a great way for them to measure themselves. If any Bronxville players are reading this convince your coach to go!
Just A Fact, DFBF, how come you didn’t comment on a North Rocklandless S11?
Class AA,
as you pointed out on the other thread about North Rock, only the kicker, maybe? I would love to see any info out there on North Rock and Ramapo. Last year you had Franco Cutz ramping up Sal Sulla. The QB returns, but not Super 11 based on last year’s stats. Still you have to give him credit for being at the helm as the team advanced to the Sect Final. But playoffs, I am not sure he did enoguh to warrant Super 11 from the games I saw.
Take this with a grain of salt since it came off of Max Preps, but North Rock has 28 Jrs and Sophs returning. Now it is possible that might include the JV, because we all know how Casarella likes to dress the JV for a home game. The point, there has to be one player besides the kicker that should be a conteder for Super 11. If not, I stand by my previous comments, it is going to be a long year in Raider land. The ultimate would be if they get slapped by C-North, who I think will finish 2nd in the AA West. C-North should do decent with Turner in the backfield. I am not counting on Ramapo to finish 2nd after last year’s break down. Your thoughts?
Class AA,
I really dont know of anyone by name returning for NR except for O’Riordan. Im assuming he is the son of one of the legendary kickers for NR in the 80’s and early 90’s. I think Jerry ORiordan, Tommy O’Riordan were 2 of them. I think 1 went on to kick at Wagner if memory serves. They still win West because..well, they’re North Rockland and everyone else isnt. Mid Hudson Camp this week with JJEF, POK, Highland, Millbrook, FDR and Rhinebeck at the park in Lagrange. Some footage on Hudson Valley Sports report.com for those interested. They cover Dutchess football fantasticlly. Also Yorktown and RCK at Yorktown next week at Hudson Valley camp. Arlington doing their own thing and I hear then scrimmage Somers, Gorton, etc.at weeks end.
When in doubt, I lean towards tradition and programs. Even when C North had Schuster (one of the top non-jersery catholic players to come out of Rockland the last couple of years), they couldn’t beat North Rockland or Ramapo. I’ll have to believe it when I see it, so for now I’m calling for North Rockland and Ramapo to be the two team to make the playoffs out of the Rockland League in AA this year.
I do love Turner though, and think he will have a great year. With Gorton and Mahopac as CNorth’s two cross-over’s the stage is set for him to have a huge year. I think Gorton isn’t a strong enough team to contain him, and Mahopac isn’t fast enough.
As far as Ramapo is concerned, this is a huge year for them. Zotter is a great track coach, continually pumping out very good track squads, but the question remains if he can he do it in football. His first year I really thought they had a chance to at least make the sectional championship game with the year and talent they had, but then they ended up on the same side of the bracket as New Rochelle, and were upset by Mahopac (perhaps looking ahead to playing New Ro?). The last years debacle happened. If they don’t get out to a good start, beating Lincoln, then maybe upsetting RCK, then beating C South (or 2-1 at the worst), I don’t see them beating North Rockland, can see them losing C North, don’t see them losing to Suffern this year, but then going in the tank the rest of the year. If that happens, and they finish say 2-7 (by losing to RCK & South and starting out 1-2 not 2-1 or 3-0), then I think it will be tough for Zotter to build a winner in a school that has nothing but crazy athletes year after year, which would be a shame.
I hear harrison is doing a 7 on 7 against iona on monday
Husky Fan according to Josh, Harrison can’t go to a 7 on 7 vs Iona on Monday because they’ll be at Champion Camp, and Iona isn’t attending. If what your saying is true, to me that would be disappointing because it’s always fun to watch Harrison battle at that camp. It’s a shame they won’t be there this year if what you are saying is true.
