With Harry Peterson stepping down after last season, the Mamaroneck football program could’ve been in a transition period. But Peterson, who coached the varsity for 20 years, wouldn’t have left it that was the case.
His successor is Anthony Vitti, a 1993 grad who played for the Tigers under Peterson. The 34-year old starred at Mamaroneck before becoming a team captain and MVP and an All-American for SUNY Albany.
As you can read in the story I wrote about Vitti, he went on to coach five years at Iona Prep and the last seven at Mamaroneck. The last two Vitti served as Peterson’s defensive coordinator, earning more and more responsibility along the way.
“Some people are destined to do things,” Peterson explained. “He should be the next head football coach here.”
Read on for more about Vitti. I’ll have more later today.

This is a great move for MHS. Unfortunately, without a strong youth program, there’s no easy way for this coach to move the needle on this program. Unlike baseball and hockey, which have extensive and competitive youth programs, football around here (ironically bracketed by New Ro and Rye) is nowhere.
But Rye doesn’t have a youth football program either.
Vitti will do great things with this program. great coach.
