(UPDATED, 8:27 p.m.) Mount St. Michael was upset earlier today by St. Joe’s by the Sea. Now, an even bigger shocker — defending CHSAA champ Iona Prep was upset by Xavier 78-75. The Gaels sliced a five-point deficit to one in the final seconds but could not tie the score.
So that now begs the question: Could this be Stepinac’s year?
The Crusaders already beat Monsignor McClancy 57-52 to advance to Tuesday’s semifinals. They will meet Xavier on Tuesday at Cardinal Spellman in the semifinals.
UPDATED, 9:00 p.m.: I heard from Stepinac coach Tim Philip. His team will play Xavier at 7:30 on Tuesday in the semifinals. The game is at Cardinal Spellman.

wtf is going on
I guess Mike Quick and Devaney are cryin in their soup( joke) But they both love IP
iona played terribly. wasted a 20-9 1st quarter lead. trailed by 1 after 3 quarters. down 10 with 2 minutes to go in the 4th and cut it to 1 point before losing.
with iona and mount out, i will need to pull for stepinac tuesday. stepinac is the only remaining chsaa school from section 1.
this one is hard to digest from a personal perspective. however, this is what high school basketball is all about.
xavier is a tough, jesuit, semi-military school from lower manhattan who was not the least bit intimidated by iona or its reputation.
Mike Quick had Iona slated to be playing in the CHSAA finals on March whatever- and he sounded overly confident. How could he be so foolish?
Dis iz tru1y a wierd day a day of upsets from the nba to the ncaa to high school basketbaLl rea11y reaa11y strange
I am studded …................
Does this mean Iona”s season is over???
Who does St. Joseph play…...Ford or Hayes?
St Joes vs Hayes 6pm
Stepinac vs Xavier 7:30 at Spellman
Xavier played perfect game this evening. They did not let Iona intimidate them. Actually Iona usually plays that very aggressive defense. They look as tho they foul on every play & get away with it. Well Xavier did exactly the same tonight. If you went up for a easy basket you were shooting two[ old school basketball at its best. Refs actually aided iona with a questionable Tech on a Xavier player celebrating in final seconds to give iona a chance to win. Iona in second half down by ten. Started to look tired. Missed a bunch of foul shouts short. Then different players tried to do it al by themselves. They did not get ball to Voulter?? Xavier & iona both played hard. It was a great HS Basketball game.
Yes it means iona season is over.
Wow that’s crazy Iona lost!!!!
Not sure who’s reservations need to be canceled in Glenns Falls. Who are you – you dope?! sum kind of anti -iona fan? u freak!
I guess you all were right. We were overrated this year. I will admit it. Overrated.
I am from xavier and I just made hotel reservations in glenns falls because i am very cocky and i think we are going to glenns falls now that we’ve beaten big bad iona.
Mt V- shut up please. iona would have smacked mt. vernon if they played but mt. vernon is too scared to play them so they go running off to pennsylvania and kentucky and ohio and who even knows. Who cares what they do down there!? Play iona and then you can talk you woosys. good luck against New Ro!
it really is a shame that mount and iona will not play again. If it turns out being hayes vs stepinac it will look like a third place consolation game. Mount and iona were clearly the best teams in the chsaa A this year and their third match up would have been a great one.
Sorry about your L Iona fans, I know you all had high hopes this year.
Some of you will never realize the value of Matt Lyde and Pope. And this truly proves the dribble drive offense blows!
I feel for the kids and I was happy to be able to watch for Voekel for so many years. But I must say I am happy that I will never have to read anything again from that punk iona aka mount or whoever he is.
Iona Power you had a nice run with this group. Good luck moving forward.
Superstar,
Nothing Mt V said was insulting. This loss shocked a lot of people, including me. It is unconscionable for you to talk garbage about MV right now. Not only after a loss, but particularly after Iona got beaten handily by New Ro this year.
fan,
Thats a particularly ignorant comment. Playoffs don’t always go the way the favorite would like them to. As “Iona” said above, this is what HS basketball is all about. The two favorites loses most years in the NCAA tournament, does that make the final a 3rd place game. Show some class.
local observer,
I couldn’t agree with you more. Pope and Lyde were incredibly valuable last year and you can see the difference in this year’s results.
Despite this tough loss, Iona had an excellent year. They had without a doubt the best three year run in Iona Prep history, I think its fair to say. The young men have a lot to be proud of winning a city and state title last year. I wish all the kids the best in college. I look forward to watching Voelkel, Carissimo and Bronner on the next level.
I am still very shocked by what happened yesterday- This was the first loss by Iona to a league foe in two years –
No excuses – Iona just did not play well – Xavier played outstanding- They are a very good team who had two of their better players miss most of the year- They are back which made them a dangerous team-
Anyone associated with Iona should just be proud of this core group who for the last 3 years have played great and has a CHSAA A City Championship crown from last year- These kids will be missed and will always be remembered.
iona really misses last year’s seniors
some people don’t realize how hard it is to replace key guys…especially guys who were the heart of their defense
I did not expect Iona to lose this early in the playoffs either. They had a strong team this year with a good shot at federations.
That said, Mike Quick is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, and is in love with LI (AKA New Jersey North) and NJ in all sports, not Iona. Now if we are talking about Devaney that is a different story.
scary,
Great point, Mike Quick is a television guy, not a basketball or football expert. If you want a basketball expert’s opinion call Tom Konchalski. Kevin, I love him, but he certainly had his predilections. People loved to say Kevin favored Iona, but I think his fondness for Peekskill was more so. Both good teams, so hard to argue too much with it. But sometimes you have to call it like it is. Peekskill this year didn’t beat anyone and they were still getting the respect from Kevin and Josh as if they were the team they were in years past when the were beating top teams.
Anyone have updates from County Center…..Pok and NR should be at the half by now?
how can u say iona and mount were the two best teams? THEY LOST! Good luck to Stepinac an Hayes. It would be a true championship game becasuse they wouldnt have lost.
What happened to the kid Savage on Iona was he hurt everytime i look in the boxscore he has zero. Was he hurt?
MVfan71
Savage had a leg injury- That was a big loss for the Iona front court especially against Xavier who had two 6’5” kids and two 6’4” kids who can really bang and get physical
first hats off to all the winners and i am now pulling for hayes.i was out of contact from my computer and this is my first chance to reply.i think with xavier the message was sent when they beat mount.
mrvolo,
Im certainly hoping for a Hayes/Stepinac final. Your Mount team will be very strong next year.
