Yup, Pleasantville gets first loss

February
4

Sorry, I was at a hockey game and just heard about this OT thriller in the rivalry game:

Briarcliff 67, Pleasantville 65, OT: Conor Murnane had 15 points as Briarcliff handed visiting Pleasantville its first loss, 67-65 in overtime,Wednesday night. Ryan Huegel added 12 points for the Bears (13-3), and Najee Forte had 11. Pleasantville’s Matt Nicolai scored 17 points and hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Nolan Robinson had 16 points for the Panthers (16-1).

  1. salesman

Robinsons points came strictly in the second half since he picked up 3 fouls in the first four minutes. Its was actually Greg Nicolai who hit the three to send it into OT, Matts younger brother.

  2. Huh?

Yes, salesman is correct. Greg was the one who hit the three. But it wasn’t with three seconds left. It was with 12 seconds left? I wonder where this information is coming from…But great win bcliff

Exciting Finish. I heard Ref’s had to run to Sports Authority at halftime to get new whistles, they blew the damn things so many times. I felt like I was watching a field hockey game. At least they were consistent since both teams were getting cheap calls. Killed the flow of the game. Pville bench was scrappy. I am still shaking my head since Bramswig took one shot in OT. It was bad enough they wouldn’t get him the ball with great position during regulation but when Pville has 3 starters on the bench in OT?! I figured he would touch the ball each time down the court (on Wing above 3 pt line doesn’t count) Offense should have been running thru him. Coach lack of direction or players not excuting. Am I wrong?

  4. Class B

The game was truly entertaining, could have been a classic if it were not for the refs. I disagree with Just a Fans comments on Bramswig, he got the ball plenty of times throughout the game and was uneffective.

Not to mention the kid is 6’5” how about go get the ball off the glass in a big game if you want so bad and stay off the perimeter where you have no chance to score.

  5. 10960

A lot of schools know their football schedules guys. There has been some divisional changes.

  6. Class B

    Just a Fan,

    p.s.

The reason there were 3 starters on the bench in overtime was because they had fouled out. Are you sure you were at the game?

  7. sec1 fan

not sure if anyone saw during the West Virginia game but there was a little brawl after a foul. Kevin Jones was, of course, the man who went in and pulled out the instigator of the fight. Great character by one of the best up and coming players in the big east.

  8. 16-1

This game could have been one of the best yet. A great rivalry ended with Pleasantville finally experiencing a loss. Briarcliff played their hearts out and it was clear to see it on the basketball court. Najee Forte was better than ever coming off his ACL injury along with boys like Ryan Huegal, Thomas Wen, Danny Collins, Troy Press and Conor Murnane. Briarcliff’s been underestimated due to their, lack of a better word, easy scedhule, playing teams like Rye Neck. But they proved to Section 1 last night they weren’t out for the count and were more than able to play. They were up on Pleasantville from the beginning of the game! Even had a 17 point lead at one point!! Lets get it in

    Hey Carp,

I don’t know how much longer you’ll fill in for josh but i thought you did a seamless and nice job this week and on the girls side thanks for mentioning tonights game for Jami Erlich. It really is a great cause. Well thanks carp and hope to see you writing on this or the girls blog again soon.

I agree, Bramswig is out on the wing way too much. The furthest he would be away from the hoop is the high post. But Class B is right, they did get him the ball he wasn’t effective with it, and he struggled get post position against Bcliffs big guys. Doesn’t help that Pvilles guards didn’t throw him any good entry passes when he did have position though.

  11. who cares

who cares about this game… Woodlands is going to win it all anyway!!!!!!!!!!! I heard they just added another star and he lives in the coaches attic.

  12. slip screen

If Robinson had not gotten three fouls in the first quarter Pleasantville would have one by 6 or 8

    Class B-

You dope, I know the starters were out of the game due to fouling out. The point is this. Based on who was on the court who would you like to shoot the ball. A couple non-starters who just got into the game or do you want to win or lose with your starting center- Bramswig. I want to win or lose with Bramswig.

    Espn-

Agree a couple bad entries passes to Bramswig. Some of it was bad angles from the guards. They tried to get him the ball from the top of the key instead of letting the guard on the wing get him the ball. “he struggled get post position against Bcliffs big guys” I guess you weren’t at the game. He had perfect position on so many occassions. He had such great space due to him using his butt perfectly. I actually was sitting next to three coaches. One is a current Div 3 coach, one current HS coach, and one retired Head coach and they were all shocked they weren’t getting him the ball. Especially in OT as he clearly should have been their #1 option since 3 starers had fouled out. He is either scoring or getting fouled if he gets the ball on the low block.

  15. pville fan

    Just a fan..
I agree 100% with you and so do most of the fans (both Pville and Briarcliff) who were in the gym last night. Pville does not get the ball to Bramswig. He was wide open at the end of regulation that would have won the game for Pville, but no pass inside…

It was a fun game to watch
Good Luck in the playoffs Pville!

  16. espn westchester

My comment wasn’t necessarily about him sealing his man off, more of a comment about posting up too high in the lane, a few times trying to post up in the high post, look like they were pushing him up the lane and that cause problems for the guards. That being said when Nolan isn’t on the court the offense has to run through Bramswig. In a double bonus situation the ball has to go inside-out every possession and get him to the line.

  17. Just Checking

How about giving Briarcliff a little credit for DENYING the ball inside to Bramswig. From what I could see, Blair and Collins were fronting and intercepting many of the attempted lob-ins to Bramswig. P’Ville had to resort to Robinson or Nicolai dribbling into the paint on most offensive sets. In overtime, each team was down to 2 starters plus the 7th, 8th and 9th players. It is wonder any points at all were scored considering the atmosphere in the gym by then.

The difference in my opinion is while P’Ville’s big guys are stronger, and tougher down low, B’Cliff’s big guys are better passers and better running the floor. I think every 3-pointer that Briarcliff made was on a pass from Blair or Collins kicking the ball outside to a wide open guard.

  18. Fake Falcons

The Woodlands/Harlem All-Stars got a scare last Saturday. Little ole Hastings, with their group of kids that grew up playing recreation and CYO ball together, went toe ot toe with the Woodlands/Harlem All-Stars only to get get robbed by the officials of a chance to win or send the game into over time. The other coaches in Class B should thank the Hastings coach for drawing up the game plan to beat Dey-Dey and company. But Pleasantville and Briarcliff already have the players to beat the Metro-North riding Woodlands/Harlem All-Stars.

  19. bballfan2010

What a game, one of the best Ive seen in a while. At halftime i thought pville was done but they came back and scored 30 points in the 4th quarter which i thought was unbelievable. We all know the refs were bad to both teams but it defiantly affected pville more because in overtime they had three starters out including robinson. Something about the refs must be done. Need better refs in a game of that importance. I still think that pville is a better team and still my favorite for the gold ball. They played harder and showed more heart than bcliff. I also must say both crowds were incredible and that place was rocking. When nicolai hit that 3 to send it into overtime the pville fans were in a huge mash pit while the bcliff fans were on the court reading to storm (too bad). Amazing game and i hope these teams meet again in the county center. I would love to see them go head to head when it really mattered. Matt Nicolai showed leadership in the 4th quarter and overtime. Great player and is one of the best players in class b.

  20. Clifford Briar

I thought it was a great game. But my sense is that Briarcliff is the better team. They were on the verge of blowing it open until the refs started calling fouls every 20 seconds.
Collins, Blair, Murname, Huegel and Wen have carried the load to date. If Forte, who is still getting stronger, comes all the way back physically, Briarcliff becomes the favorite in Class B at the County Center.

  21. bballfan2010

The refs were calling fouls from the start the reason the bears got a lead at all was because he was calling fouls left and right. The game would have been close the entire time if the refs would let the kids play basketball. Pville will go farther in sectionals but i must say Huegel and Greg Nicolai will be stars if people don’t consider them already.

  22. pick and roll

Definitely a crazy game. I don’t know if either team really wanted to win this game, but it was exciting and draining.

I thought Pville was done about five times and Briarcliff let them back in it. Both coaches are excellent normally but each had poor games in this one. BCliff’s was smiling as his team was shooting with a ten-point lead and four minutes to go. He should have been schooling them to bring the ball back out. Pville’s almost blew the game after the game-tying 3 with 12 seconds to go by pressing too tight and then refused to get the point to his players to get Bramswig the ball down low. He should have touched the ball down low every time down the court in OT and the Pville guards need to learn how to get him the ball better. Not more maybe, but just learn to make better passes.

Briarcliff was impressive overall and deserved to win. They are a smart team whose main players shoot and pass well. Neither team was helped by their bench. Both teams were hurt by horrible refs. Forte and Robinson need to get better control of their emotions, although I have to believe that Pville would not have had such a deficit without questionable foul trouble on Robinson.

If they meet again in sectionals, especially at County Center, look for Pville to post a double-digit win.
Great game, but poor play and horrible refs.

  23. Hold on

please do not blame the refs for not being able to break the game open thats rediculous. The refs helped out bcliff more in the first half by calling 2 of robinsons 3 fouls very picky and were barely even fouls. Then it evened out more in the 2nd half.

And another thing did you see bramswigs first shot in overtime it hit the side of the backboard. yea the gaurds didn’t get it into all the time but the kid doesn’t have any post moves hes all right unfortunately. He gets most of his points based on athleticism and now teams are realizing how to play him. He took atleats six fade away jumpers from the elbow last night. Yes i agree they need to get him the ball more but he doesn’t have any moves so thats all on his part.

  24. Section1Fan

Have to agree with the talk of Pville not getting the ball to Bramswig. Most of the time he’s the most athletic kid on the court and makes good things happen. Even though Pville is 16-1, they still have ALOT of potential and that could be scary for Class B. I’ve seen 5 or 6 Pville games this year and if they can learn how to get Bramswig the ball they could be unstoppable with him and Robinson running the show with decent role players around them. Bramswig and Robinson are studs!

  25. Hook Shot

I think if Briarcliff were to meet Pleasnatville at the County Center , Briarcliff will win by double digits.

Briarcliff is much faster with better passers on the run. Pleasantville is a half court lumbering squad, dependent upon 3 point shots. That limitation will be exposed when forced to play up tempo on the big court at the County Centeer.

I agree that the Briarcliff coach and the fans were celebrating much too early with a 9 point lead with a few minutes to go. But if Briarckiff shot 25 percent from the line the game would never have gone to OT.

Pleasantville likes to play in the 30’s and 40’s on small oourts. That will not work at the CC. Brircliff will run them ragged.

  26. honestly

Honestly Bcliff look the better team yesterday. Clearly Pville is the better team but Bcliff came prepared. The first game they struggled to get the ball across half court and this game they beat the press with ease most of the night. I was impressed by their shooting and how everyone on the team can handle the ball. The reason why Bcliff built the lead was they hit their free throws through out the game and Pville is not a good free throw shooting team.Late in the game though Bcliff struggled from the line and when every possession was going to free throws since there were 40 fouls in the second half they were coming up with empty possessions. If they hit free throws at the end of the game they would have put Pville away. Pville was on the ropes a number of times and kept comin back.
If they meet again I expect a very similar game. Hard fought, tough game, back and forth and whoever hits free throws will win.

  27. email

That was a legit court storm by Briarcliff fans too. Although dangerous I liked what the administration allowed kids be kids and celebrate. Even though as a Pville fan it made me sick to see that.

  28. The Cliff

Your saying pleastville came out harder and with more heart? what game where you at? briarcliff put everything together passing, shooting, and D-ing up pvilles big men.. they couldnt do anything..im tired off you bloggers blaming everyone else for pvilles lose(refs, coaching)except for the team..THEY GOT OUT PLAYED. Number 1 ranked in the state, thats a joke..B-Cliffs gettin it done but yet there’s still no respect..just wait for the playoffs boys

  29. jb

bcliff cheated.. they used the star power of having justin bieber on their team to distract pville.. wait what? that kid isn’t justin bieber? the little one?? i could’ve sworn…

  30. Just a Fan

    Hook Shot-

Funny that you think Bears win by Double digits at CC because it is a bigger court. Pville beat you guys on Bigger Court at Pace and you guys won on smaller court at Briacliff. Pville has 3 Gold Balls and you have none. By the way the 4 Gold Balls were all won at the CCenter. Pville lost last year too a much much faster team in Lincoln Hall. That game was decided by 1 pt on a LH airball put back. Not really sure if the Bears are all of a sudden have the fast team in Class B. Corrected me if I am wrong by Pville should still get the #1 seed since they only have one loss. If that is correct then Briacliff#3 will have to beat Woodlands#2 in the semi’s to get to the finals. If Pville is fortunate to get to the finals then they will meet up with the Bears. But a lot needs to be done by both teams for us to see that Rematch. One thing I can tell you is that Ref crew will not be ref that game. Thank god for that. One last thing that was so evident was the importance of Nolan to that team. Pville goes as Nolan goes. They score 16 in the first half without him and looked lost offensively but score 30 in the 4th Qtr. He is a very talented player but needs to understand you have to give up a layup at times instead of risking a 2nd or 3rd foul. Especially when we are only 3 minutes into the 1st qtr. I also think you could have thought of going zone with Nolan up top to reduce chance of him picking up 3rd. Briacliff did hit all open 3’s in the first half and did a great job at the line in the first half. They did miss a lot in the 4th qtr but Pville was right there with them in missing foul shots. I would love to see the foul shouting % from both teams. In the end the right team won. Briacliff deserved that game.

  31. FOOTBALLFAN

The only reason why it was a 2point win by the Bears was because of missed foul shots…All of you keep saying pville didnt do this and didnt do that…who cares! they were OUTPLAYED. Obvious who is number one. BEARS. and how bout people start giving them the respect they deserve?

  32. Hook Shot

    Just a Fan,

Although it is clear that you are more tha just a fan but rather a “pleasantville fan” . Here are the numbers you asked for:

fouls shots in the 2nd half:

    Briarcliff – 19-38 (0 for 8 in last 45 seconds)

Pleasantville – 19-29 in the second half

1st half the teams were a combined 6-12 (3-6 each team. a wash)...44-79 combined for the game.

You are not wrong. PVille will get the #1 seed, Woodlands the #2 and Briarcliff the #3.

Briarcliff will beat Woodlands and then you will get to witness your worst nightmare when your Pville team plays Briarcliff at the County Center.

Yeah OK. Pleasantville almost beat a fast Lincoln Hall team last year at the County Center after beating them in the regular season. And PVille almost beat a fast Briarcliff team last night after trailing by 14 early in the 4th quarter.

  33. not a fan

hey just a fan . your a dope.

briarcliff won a gold ball just 3 years ago. 2007. think before you speak …you tool.

  34. Just a Legend

Hey Just a fan, not a fan is right… bcliff just won a gold ball recently in ‘07. You are a complete idiot to not even know that. Why are you even dicussing basketball if you come on here with a comment like that. Let’s Go Bears!!!! Great Win Baby! All the Pville haters please TAKE A SEAT! Pville just face it- YOU STINK

  35. Worst I've ever seen

Those refs at the game last night ought to be ashamed of themselves for calling a game like that. I’ve never seen a game called so badly! And this went both ways. Awful calls went against both teams, causing the best players to foul out, and it made for a sloppy game with inexperienced people in the game.

By half time both coaches should have agreed that those refs were the worst they had ever seen, and they should have just told them to leave the gym. Then both coaches should have picked 2 intelligent looking people out of the crowd and gotten them to ref the game. I’m serious! They couldn’t have been any worse then these two refs! One with his belly hanging out and the other looking like he should be reffing a modified game. I mean, can’t section 1 pick the best refs out there for games that they think will be big, important games!? It was almost as if both refs had made a bet before the game on which one could foul out more players from the game. Eight players fouling out? C’mon, something isn’t right here. Let the players play you terrible refs. And never come back to ref another game at bcliff.

I also thought that the storming of the court was very cool, and should happen more on a high school level. If the administration tries to hold the kids back, then they should be ashamed of themselves and ask themselves when the last time it was they had so much fun. Yes, some kids will get tackled to the ground in a big pile. But did anyone get hurt? NO. And even if they did, would anything really have happened? NO. It would have been covered up and the kid would have been given the proper treatment by the trainer on hand.

  36. Facts of Life

The way the journal news is covering the pville bcliff game and the rivalry is pathetic

  37. Say What?

“both coaches should have picked 2 intelligent looking people out of the crowd and gotten them to ref the game.”

Talk about finding a needle in a haystack.

    Just a Dad
“Pville has 3 Gold Balls and you have none. By the way the 4 Gold Balls were all won at the Center.”

Did you subconsciously add Briarcliff’s gold ball in there or did you lose your train of thought between sentences?

  38. Jimbp

Rick Reilly of SI wrote an article once on a high school kid from Arizona who became paralyzed from a stroke that occured because fans ran on the court after a game. He hit a big shot to win the game and fans stormed the court. Nothing intentional -just an accident. Stanford honored the scholarship. Joe Kay was his name. I just looked it up -class valedictorian and a very good volleyball player too. I’m sure many fans do not know this when they run on the court but it can happen when crowds form. Great win by Briarcliff but players have the court to celebrate on and the fans have the stands. I agree that it is too dangerous and not worth the risk. Colleges are to blame since the high school kids are always seeing this on TV and want to try it too.

  39. sec 1 hoops fan

Hey Jimbp get a grip. If you are going to to try and be fair with your assessment, they use both sides of the argument. Not one extreme tragedy. How many times have kids run on the court in college and high school and nothing happened huh?

You are such a product of today’s wussification. It really is a joke. Waaaa kids stormed the court. The fact that Briarcliff has spirited fans to do that is awesome. Instead of enjoying it and applauding it, wussification cronies like you are tearing it down and making it seem like its as severe as going to war.

You know what no one should be allowed to drive EVER. way too risky…I mean there are accidents daily. So lets just all walk, ride bikes and use mass transit.

  40. Jimbp

Secton 1 Hoops Fan, kids get hurt playing sports all the time. If a kid gets hurt during the game those things happen. Anyone getting hurt on the court after the game is over and the whistle has blown can be prevented and one is one too many. No we don’t stop driving and living which is my point. There’s enough ways to get injured in our daily lives already. I agree that most times nothing is going to happen and the kids are having fun after the game but I just believe it’s not necessary – just my opinion. It only takes one time. Enjoy the rest of the season. If you felt I was raining on the parade I apologize.

  41. email

Pville has more than4 gold balls just look in the Lobby outside the gym. I’m not positive but I think Bcliff won their first in 07

  42. NO REASON

I guess there is no reason to play the Class B playoffs. It appears Briacliff is on its way to win its second Gold Ball. Good luck in the states Briacliff

  43. snailmail

briarcliff has won 2 gold balls. 1999 and 2007…...They have won a few more league titles 5 or 6…..they beat westlake tonight and if they beat keio next week they will share the league title this season with pleasatville.

my opinion is that either briarcliff, pleasantville or woodlands will win the gold ball this season . no other ckass b team has a realistic chance.

  44. bballfan2010

everyone has to stop hatin on pville and bcliff both teams played tremendously and yes the refs blew the game but bcliff won the game and has a good chance to win the gold ball. In my opinion woodlands will choke sending pville and bcliff to the final and another tough battle will play out. pville will correct the mistakes from the last game and win 69-65 in another very close game

  45. BearParent

    Just the facts!
    1.Briarcliff vs P’ville was a great game!

2.The refs were consistant! Any and Every game has good and bad calls. It’s a part of sports!

3.A third game between the two schools would be absolutely great to watch.

4.Najee Forte needs to stay calm, GREAT Acting by Bramswig!

5.BRIARCLIFF AUTHORITIES TOLD THEIR STUDENTS THAT THEY WILL BE SUSPENDED IF THEY RUN ON THE COURT!

  46. Congrats

Pville you guys had a great season. At the beginning of the year I think everybody would have signed up for 17-1. It’s a season you guys will never forget. But now put that all behind you because you guys are 0-0 just like everybody else. Good luck in the playoffs.

  47. On That Note

If someone had told me that Briarcliff would finish this season at 15-3 and tied with Pleasantville for league champions, I would never have believed it. Remember too that Briarcliff has accomplished this, for the most part, without their leading scorer from last year.

Pleasantville was supposed to win this year. Briarcliff has surprised everyone with their level of play this season afer frinishing below.500 last seson.

Briarcliff- You had an unbelievable season, now get it done in the playoffs!!

  48. davis

Bcliff did not win the section in 1999, Hastings did that year

  49. Not sure Why

Bears like to throw up league titles when they didn’t win. They show they won the league in 1987 and 88 in football and I know Pville won the league. They were 9-0 beat Briacliff and were league champs. Pville’s 88 team also beat Briacliff and won league.

  50. Bearstard

Well then. Who has won the league this year in basketball? Briarcliff will raise another banner for basketball 2010 !
Briarcliff did win 2 gold balls at the County Center. 2007 and another in the late 90’s.

  51. spongebob

    BCLIFF SUCKS! GOOOO PVILLE.

BCLIFF TALKS A BIG GAME, BUT THEY KNOW DEEP DOWN THAT IF WE MET IN THE COUNTY CENTER, THEY WOULD LOSE. AHH I HATE THE BEARS, GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!

  52. Da Bears

It’s so funny to think that Pville think they have a chance. They do what they normally do and that is choke!! Do they have the talent, yes. But can they put it all together? That answer is easy. NO!!!! If they are lucky enough to step onto the court with the Da Bears they will lose. Not that I think they will make the finals but if they hopefully do it will be so fun to watch them lose. Killing their perfect season was fun but to see them lose in the finals will be PRICELESS! Pville please please please make it to the finals because we want to watch you again after another loss!

  53. just sayin

The fans from briarcliff are nuts..its been a while since there been fans like that..storming the court was legit, ignore the haters

  54. pville

yo pville will kill bcliff in the county center im so excited to get that gold ball were gonna kick ass nd than win states. ur court storming looked alil early too nd it wasnt that great since it lasted a total of 10 seconds. we will beat u guys the next time we play u. i guarantee it. we are pleasantville and we are the best. we also go harder on the weekends

  55. Pville stop talking

Pville stop talking about going hard cuz u dont. and u will not win. BCLIFF OWNS U.

  56. bcliff

we owned u pville we beat u guys fair nd square nd u never even had a chance. we had the balls to storm the court nd i guarantee u guys will only watch teams storm the court and u never will yourselves you are all poor little scumbags and we killed you last week nd i wanna see your ass in the county center and kill u guys again im so pumped to storm the court again nd look at you guys crying in the stands.
