Journal News columnist Rick Carpiniello had a great feature package in today’s paper on the Top 10s of the decade. You can read it by clicking here.
Carpiniello listed his Top 10 athletes, programs and games of the decades in all sports. The notable football and basketball ones were obvious: Mount Vernon basketball, New Rochelle, Rye and Dobbs Ferry basketball, etc.
After weeks of research and reporting, I’ll be posting my All-Decade football and basketball teams, as well as my awards of the decade.
Here’s the schedule:
Jan. 1: All-Decade football teams
Jan. 2: All-Decade basketball teams
Jan. 3: All-Decade awards for football
Jan. 4: All-Decade awards for basketball
This should be fun (and controversial). Enjoy.

I have to say that Carp’s list is a good one. However, I think you could add the 2001 Mt. Vernon vs. Poughkeepsie final. Jomo Belfour was the star. Johnathan Mitchell an 8th grader and a very undersized but determined group from the North. Poughkeepsie had a chance to win it and the ball went off the kid’s leg. Great game! Great atmosphere!
It may have actually been 2002?
Baller,
I think it was 2001. I think PK had a classic OT game w/ Nyack that same year on the gridiron.
Nah it was 02 ur talking about bishmy allah the ball hit off his leg on a fast break , 2001 was the yr MV came to POK and beat Pok easy , that was the yr MV got all those out state losses and got a low seed and Pok was the 2or3 seed i think i could be wrong
PK NY,
I think the year MV came up and beat us easy was after that team with Bishme. Wasn’t Ricky Bailey and company on that team?
I checked with my Pok connection it was 2002. Rickey Bailey played the year before and then stupidly transferred (failed out of prep) and was back the following year. That 2002 game was a classic.
Got you. That was a great game, I think both MV and PK both came into that game unbeaten. Great stuff, I hope whoever plays in the Center this year can start the decade in a class like that.
