Somers senior football star Matt Deiana has been selected to participate in the Max Emfinger All-American Bowl on Jan. 2 in Austin, Texas.
The first question, of course, is who is Max Emfinger? Well, through some research, he’s a national recruiting guru who hosts an annual all-star game. You can read the history of the game here.
This year’s version features some of the country’s top recruits, according to this story on the site. The headline player is a guy named Victor Beasley, a strong safety headed to Clemson. He’s 6-4, 200 and runs a 4.46. Not bad.
Deiana will be traveling down to Texas on Jan. 2 for a week of practice. Check out this article on Deiana on Scout.com, where Deiana said he’s been in contact with Wisconsin, Connecticut and Colgate.
Playing in a national all-star game is obviously a huge opportunity. Yes, this isn’t the U.S. Army All-America Bowl. But Deiana will get seen by college scouts who might not have otherwise known his name. He’s very talented at 5-7, 190, and is a five-year player at Somers who was a Journal News first-team all-star this past season.
Congrats to Matt.

Still might not be enough to get picked for the 50 Man Downstate Team in comparison to bigger, better, more SR year productive, and more highly recruited players from Sec 1, Sec 8, Sec 9, Sec 11, PSAL, and CHSFL.
Great honor for the young man. This bowl game is where the underrecruited Matt Featherston from Poughkeepsie got discovered. I hope Mr. Deiana does well and changes his future here!!!
Congrats to Matt- he deserves it ,a great kid, a great player, all the best to him.
Congrats to Matt. This is a great accomplishment for him. To Evaluate, you might have posted one of the dumbest comments ever on this board. First off, the kid got selected to this for a reason so don’t take anything away from him. This is much bigger than the Upstate/Downstate game, as that is going to have potential D3 players playing in it. While this game has kids goin to Texas, Texas A&M, Clemson, Miami and so on. And as far as bigger and better, your not going to find many players with better senior season or measurable(except for height), and not many more highly recruited players, especially when you take a look at the stories written on scout and rivals.
congratulations to matt that’s awesome.
I looked at the listing of players in this game and don’t see Deiana’s name listed.

UH53, Matt Deiana is the 66th ranked player on the list…
Is Deiana considering going to Prep School? I hope this kid finds a place at a D-1 school. Maybe D-1AA is his destination.
