You probably know by now that Bronxville was beaten by Southwester (Section 6) in the Class C state final, 40-14, at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The game was far closer than the score indicates, although Southwestern was firmly in control in the second half.
The Broncos went into the break trailing just 13-7, scoring on the final play of the second quarter on a controversial touchdown. Quarterback Jack Near raced around the right side and dove for the goal-line. Although it appeared his knee hit the ground at the 3, Bronxville was given the score.
It capped a first half that was a confidence-boosting for Bronxville as it was head-scratching. It dominated the game to that point — controlling the clock for 19 minutes and running 31 extra plays. The conversion rates — 1 for 7 on third down and 2 for 5 on fourth down — were holding the Broncos back.
Southwestern took all the mystery out of it in the third quarter, scoring on its first two possesions thanks to long drives. Bronxville threatened, cutting the deficit to 26-14 late in the third. But a couple of empty possessions, coupled with a few late Southwestern touchdowns, padded the final score.
Zack Sopak led the Trojans with 220 yards passing and four touchdowns.
Jack Near threw for 111 yards and rushed for 67 yards on 12 carries. But the rest of the Bronxville runners averaged just 2.6 yards per carry.
Bronxville finished 1 for 11 on third down while Southwestern converted 7 of 11. Big difference in the game.

Agreed that the score was a bit misleading – though just a bit. Southwestern made many big plays, Bronxville did not. I watched the game and never really thought Southwestern was threatened – even when Bronxville scored their 1st half touchdown to cut it to 13-7. Bronxville needed WAY too much of an effort to move the ball – Southwestern just went through Bronxville defense with ease. The better team definitely won.
Oh Well. Too bad. Kevin can you talk about Basketball now? Please? Some of us are just getting tired of all this Football talk.
AM I RIGHT OR WRONG…DID I WATCH 2 TEAMS THAT DID NOT HAVE ONE BLACK PLAYER PLAYING AND WERE GOOD????
the teams to beat this year? Games start in full this week, a number of tipoff tournaments.
Congratulations to Bronxville on a great season!
OOO – Whopp: one more day. Then you can talk all the basketball you want. In the meantime, GO KNIGHTS! Good luck tomorrow!
Tough loss – better team definitely won. Bronxville returns alot next year. We’ll be back
BIG JOE
THEY WHERE SOME
Congratulations to Bronxville on a great season!
It was a very exciting Class C Section One football season.
great season for Bronxville. They should be proud of an excellent run! I wish the seniors all great luck in college, particularly the ones looking to continue playing football.
How come no one on this blog has talked about WP beating Stepinac. The catholic bloggers take a huge hit.
Big Joe, what difference does that make?
ur not right or wrong for watching ur WRONG FOR CARING about something so stupid as what color the players on the teams were .Anyway great season Bronxville they were just to good for us to beat without our A game
Maybe someone should mention the dirty shots s.w. took. Oh, i guess i just did.
Be proud Bronxville..you had a great season and should be proud of what you’ve achieved….you played well at the Dome and you played with dignity.
Big Joe
Your point is…..??????
IT WAS MENTIONED BECAUSE IT SEEMED UNUSUAL,,IT WAS NOT DISCRIMINATING NOR PREDUDICE , JUST AN OBSERVATION I GOT MY ANSWER SO LETS MOVE ON
PATSY;
Oh, pleeeeeze…. give us a break! It’s football! Stop whining and lose gracefully!
well since the blog is about the C Championship game and not the Turkey Bowl I guess Stepinac is over preparing for Hockey, Basketball, Wrestling, Track & Field, stop me when I’ve listed all the winter programs the Catholic School offers and field competitive teams in, especially with the CHSAA having a very dominant and strong T&F and Basketball league. White Plains will probably talk about an exhibition game until August, when they could have been playing Sunday at 1 pm and not New Rochelle…oh well…only a few more football related blogs this year so it’s been a blast guys. I’ll be checking in periodically to see any football related updates. But until the Camps begin, I’ll be on some of other blogs run by the Journal News since I am of a different sport other than basketball. Ciao, aloha, adios.
I know all the fans in Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville congratulate the Broncos on a great, great season.
Well done by a great group of kids.
Big Joe,
Kind of like watching a Rye Harrison game Huh?
under the stands,
I did not want to go there, but I would be lying if I said I was not thinking of it. lol!!!!!!
Bronxville dominated everything but the score in the first half. The 2 or 3 stalls in the red zone left SW with the lead at halftime and they took full advantage of it. You have to tip your hat to them for that: they’re a great team.
I think perhaps Bronxville’s greatest strength contributed to it’s downfall in the Dome: the running game was so strong in the regular season that the Broncos rarely brought out their passing plays in the preceding 11 games. The plays were there, but because they hadn’t been tested in real-game situations, the timing was not. Jack Near was having to wait 1 or 2 seconds too long for the passing routes to complete and that gave SW’s D-line enough time to get through the blocks and disrupt the plays. SW tried unsuccessfully to establish the run, and although they weren’t as quick on the pass plays as Hoosick Falls, they were quick enough to execute, and that made the difference: without it Bronxville would have gone into halftime with the lead, and the game would have been quite different. As Kevin and others have said, the teams were much more closely matched than the score would imply. I’ll bet there were a lot of nervous players in the SW locker room at half time. When the disappointment dulls a bit, I hope the Broncos will feel proud of what they did: they laid everything out on the field and showed the state that Section 1 has heart and class second to none!
