Now that the turkey has settled into your stomach and the Giants game mercifully came to an end, take a few minutes and check out my article from Thursday’s Journal News.
It was a feature story on Bronxville junior Jack Near, who just might have been the toughest player in Section 1 this season. Read it by clicking here.
Near tore his MCL, partially tore his meniscus and dislocated his knee cap — a trio of injuries that typically ends players’ season, and some careers. Yet, after missing four games, Near is back out there thanks to intense therapy and rehabilitation. Not only his playing, he’s performing a state championship level.
The story touches on the physical and mental recovery Near endured. It’s an amazing situation, one that gives a true sports fan chills. Think about the possibility: a quarterback leads to his team to a state championship despite a serious injury to his knee. It’s storybook.
The state tournament coverage will continue Friday with a pair of stories, one by Rick Carpiniello and one by myself. They’re both about New Rochelle and will certainly create some conversation. Be sure to check them both out.

He joined the daily staff soon after and has since covered various high school and pro sports. Away from sportswriting, Josh lives in Westchester and spends his free time either with his wife, Sarah, or expertly managing his various championship-winning fantasy sports teams. what was worse his injury or dakota degree’s injury??
I remember this kid playing last year against Fox Lane in a JV matchup. Early in the game he got a concussion, it was 2 plays later when he was back in. He was eventually taken out by his coach because he didn’t seem to function right. This was a very good JV game and it looked to me as a varsity game. It was a 17-14 win by Fox Lane. No doubt in my mind Bronxville would of won if he was in. This kid is the toughest kid in the section. No doubt about it.
I hope he comes back and helps the team more than hurting the team.
