Postseason awards

There has been a ton of speculation on here over the last week regarding postseason awards and events, both with Section 1 and The Journal News. Let me set the record straight.
First, there WILL be All-County selections for football in the paper. Nothing will change from previous years in terms of selection. The presentation will just be different due to space constraints. We will still be selecting a Player of the Year, a Coach of the Year, a first team, second team and honorable mention; one for Westchester/Putnam and one for Rockland (sorry, we don’t cover Dutchess in the paper). No reason to panic. It will be in on Dec. 13.
Second, the all-section honorees have been decided but the list has not yet been released. The coaches association usually waits until all of the players are informed. We usually don’t run it in the Journal News until the awards banquet, which is scheduled for 2-3 weeks.
Third, as of early this week there will be NO Senior All-Star Game. I don’t know the real reason why. Honestly, I think this is a total travesty and if the coaches association allows this to happen it’s unfortunate. Almost every other sport has an all-star game, except now in football. The reasons I’ve heard through rumors are unacceptable. Somebody’s got to step up to the plate and make this happen again. It’s not too late.
Hopefully this answers some of your questions. If you have others, don’t hesitate to ask.

Kevin, Thanks for taking up the cause for the senior bowl. I heard it was dropped because the person who championed it in the past is no longer in the same position he was and no one picked it up. Sucks for the kids. Some need it for recruiting.
The all section “brunch” is on Saturday, I think the 12th.
Good luck to Bronxville, Nanuet and New Ro! Bring it home.
Kevin,
Keep up the good work trying to the Senior Bowl reinstated. Its a travesty that it wouldn’t be played. In addition to being a great way to get many of the best local players for one last game, it also can be a useful tool for some players hoping to play football on the next level.
On a separate note, I don’t envy you having to pick the All Star teams this year and particulary the POYs. There are so many contenders for 1st team All-Stars this year and it seems like there is little differentiation among the top players at the skill positions. At QB, you have Schilling/Carmel, Eck/Rye, Walker/Roosevelt, Woodson-Samuels/Iona and Pickel/John Jay. Woodson had the best #’s by far, though his team, Schilling’s and Pickel’s didn’t have great records. Walker’s team won the A title, but he might make the first team as a LB and I’ve never seen a kid get first team honors at two positions. Eck’s very good, but is he better than Woodson-Samuels? – probably not. Very tough choice at QB. RB is even tougher. Dave Thomas/Roosevelt, Cole McCormack/Rye, Matt Deiana/Somers seem to be the three top contenders. If you count Bruce Grant from Fordham Prep he had the best #’s and probably deserves 1st team with Thomas. Mack missed too much action due to injuries. Gilligan-Evans from Stepinac is probably deserving of 2nd team, but he’s only a sophomore so its easy to pass him over. Laccetti at Ossining didn’t seem to have a huge year. WR might be the toughest to choose from considering Muller/Fox Lane, Powell/Stepinac and Pritchett/Roosevelt. Plenty of very good LBs to choose from too – Dirienzo Jr, Shkreli, Walker, etc. If you I don’t know as much about the best lineman. It would seem like the offensive lines would have a decidedly New Ro/Bronxville/Rye flavor.
Rockland POY usually seems to always come down to a North Rockland or Nyack player. This year, Ostrow from Nanuet seems to be making a strong case for himself. Sulla missed some time. Davis from Nyack is a junior. Maybe Hanney from Nanuet gets some consideration as well. Should be very interesting to see all the choices this year.
It would be very interesting to see Kevin make a comprehensive All Star team that included all of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess and the local CHSFL and private schools. That would be incredibly hard to do this year as well.
Runner up for POY in Rockland, DiMarsico from Suffern hands down. He does not get the top honor only because of injury, but no one on this side of the bridge meant more to team than this kid.
Suffern went from a playoff contender, to taking some beat downs AFTER DiMarsico got hurt. I know Moutnie Hoops mentioned some other injuries, but I am not buying it. Because when Suffern was winning, there was only one guy we read about. I went a step further and look at the stats, here is the link:
http://www.maxpreps.com/athletes/yOKayvDbIEWcUuXVkg85ag/football-fall-09/stats-anthony-dimarsico.htm
Here is the record and scores WITH DiMarsico:
9/11/09 7:00 PM Clarkstown South (West Nyack, NY)** W 19-0
9/17/09 7:00 PM @Ramapo (Spring Valley, NY)** W 29-14
9/26/09 7:00 PM @Mamaroneck (NY)** W 28-7
10/2/09 7:00 PM North Rockland (Thiells, NY)** L 0-22
10/9/09 TBA @Clarkstown North (New City, NY)** W 41-12
10/16/09 TBA vs Arlington (LaGrangeville, NY) L 28-35
10/23/09 7:00 PM White Plains (NY) L 14-27
Below two games WITHOUT DiMarsico:
10/31/09 TBA @Jay (Hopewell Junction, NY) L 6-42
11/6/09 5:00 PM Carmel (NY) L 8-34
Ostrow I would assume is POY of Rockland. Here would be my top three finishers:
1. Ostrow, Nanuet(team still playing)
2. DiMarsico, Suffern(see above)
3. Sulla, North Rockland( one of the biggest runs I have seen in person against Arlington to go to the Section Finals)
4. Davis, Nyack (favorite to win POY next year)
ciero from greeley name should be in the mix talking about top players greeley was in every game could one them all that has to count
I threw in a 4th for my Nyack brethren.
Just a fact,
I know you’re a DiMarsico fan. Kevin seems to like Nanuet’s QB, Hanney, it should be interesting to see who gets first team.
fan,
Ciero had great numbers all year but I think he suffers in a close race for the All Star teams just like Gilligan-Evans from Stepinac because they’re sophomores. It seems like sophomores usually get passed over in a close situation because they have two years left.
Hoops,
DiMarsico played RB for the most part and a little QB. Just an FYI.
Fan, He isnt anything special if you think about it. He’s a one dimensional QB, that can hide behind his line and run (line averages 220+ 6’0). Im not trying to bring this kid down or anything but I am speaking the truth. You can’t compare him to Roosevelts Donovan Walker, or Poughkeepsies Jared Williams or Connor Prunty from Lakeland.
But my top candidates for POY for each classes.
Class AA
1. Lou DiRienzo, New Rochelle
2. Sal Sulla, North Rockland
3. Anthony DiMarisco, Suffern
4. Sam Lourdess, Arlington
5. Ryan Shilling, Carmel
Class A
1. Josh Graham, Poughkeepsie
2. Timmy Muller, Fox Lane
3. Connor Prunty, Lakeland
4. Cole McCorrmack, Rye
5. Donovan Walker, Roosevelt
Class B
1. Gabe Ostrow, Nanuet
2. Bobby Small, Sleepy Hollow
3. Tom Hanney, Nanuet
4. Nolan Robinson, Pleasantville
5. Sean Degnan, Irvington
Class C
1. Joe Tralli, Croton Harmon
2. Brian Murray, Bronxville
3. Devonte Brailsford, Dobbs Ferry
4. Jack Near, Bronxville
5. John Skreli, Bronxville
Lets Be Honest—- definitely Matt Deiana of Somers should be in the running for Class A.
While I agree with alot posted above about demarsico-his contribuitions to the team were more than a rb…he anchored our defense as free safety, returned ko’s,punts, lined up(and caught passes as a )flanker, and threw(2nd qb…and stepped up big time last year to fill in at QB when starting qb wentdown)..while without demarsico we were an average team(which could have battled every nite) we lost starting qb(fredericks),starting cb(Z.Parrot),starting outside lb(B.Parrot),starting inside LB(Lawson),and starting ng (kantor) so this really weakend our bench& while I ma passionate about our team(I am an asst varsity coach and probably one of the few coaches who post) I love demarsico(and his athletic talents) think we could have squeeked by without him in the playoff run add those up with our dire straits situation in the game vs JJEFgoing into that game Fredercks qb#1 out…demarsico qb#2 out…laguide#3 qb out with death in family..we had no one to turn to and our #1 TE/FL who had over 600 yds recieving and was averaging 16+ a catch stepped in and ran qb while never ever playing the position—so we had Cataldo at QB and he was our#1 recievng threat and he did a great job reagrdless od score!!!! dWood Suffern asst Varsity coach
Lets be honest, a VERY GOOD LIST!
You probably will get quite a few that will disagree with Dirienzo, but it SEEMS he might be the best player on the best defense. One of the problems, his dad game plans so well it kind of takes away from the individual performances on that D., but accentuates the TEAM aspect of the defense. Also, Jonny McGhee, #10 or #11 could be the best player on that D. I personally do not know enough about their D to comment to that degree. One thing I would point out, if you are doing POY by Class, the #1 player should be from the best team, unless there was some type of an exceptional player out there. Just do not think there is this year. DiMarsico very close, but that is really it.
Great acknowledgment of the other guys in AA. There will be haters not willing to give some of those guys credit. So again, very nice job!
he not one dimensioal all the qb you said are good he has a great arm play againstb to of the qb watch the other all good
Kevin,
How are players selected for the All County team. Do you reach out to coaches?
Also what needs to happen to play the senior bowl..I understand the proper paperwork was not filed in time. Is this fixable or is it over…
Well what about the Empire State Bowl that dream still alive or is that dead?
actually if demarisco had played a whole season it would have been a no-brainer..but after scrimaging Nanuet in the preseason and following hanney all season(yes I am a bit biased as worked with his dad but his son is a monster stud!!) and deserves POY!!!Give the kid his props!!!
It’s Nanuet’s year in Rockland. Their best player will get Rockland POY.
Who is the best player in Rockland (like if they held a draft)? I’m sure we could debate that, but for POY it has to be from Nanuet.
Congratulations Knights and good luck next week.
class C Bronxville: Murray, Mitchell, Borcich, Shkeli. without a doubt.
Shkeli,
is over rated!!!!!!!!!
Kevin Flaherty from Hastings.
Led Section 1 in receptions. ( 47 in 8 games for 629 yards and 8 tds.).
Huge punt and KO Returns. Second on team with tackles. Never came off field.
He is ahead of the Dobbs kid. Hastings beat Dobbs.
When Jack Near was injured at the start of the season..Mitchell went in an took the Broncos on a winning ride. Yesterday the Bronco’s two r.b.’s were out with injuries and guess who goes in: Mitchell; again taking the Broncos on a victorious ride. No matter where you put this kid, he’s ready to rock and roll. The kid deserves the big award.
Senior Bowl?
I have spoken to a number of players and they have no interest in playing in a Senior Bowl. Boys have moved on to other sports – basketball & hockey. Many players haven’t played football in weeks and no longer have equipment. Also, these players who are no involved in another sport can’t go back and play football as their Winter coaches would flip out.
say no to a senior bowl sounds like a typical basketball coach…...
Section 1 is run so poorly in many sports…now no Senior Game…a free college recruiting tool…I feel sorry for the KIDS whom always seem to be the ones hurt…No wonder Beacon and others may want to go to section 9…we are really hurting in this section for sports organization…Good thing basketball seems to running right…what else really is…
Mitchell definitely deserves recognition for filling in so well, but you have to give credit to the offensive line of Bronxville who the whole season dominated opponents while running very few plays.
Tape and grades from the past couple of years are going to get kids into College,,, not the senior bowl..
Not bashing Suffern because they did have a good year (probably their best since their 97 championship run) but who did they beat that was good this year? Clarkstown North and South? Ramapo or Mamaroneck? When they played competition they were manhandled! Demarsico is a flat out stud and the TE and WR were very good but they were average everywhere else and the good teams exploited that. i am happy it wasn’t NR and Ramapo again like it always is but Suffern was average this year. Hopefully they can repeat their performance in 2010 so I can eat my words. Good luck
To be objective, Mamaroneck and definetly Ramapo declined as the season went on. Calling Suffern average when DiMarsico was healthy is underrating their season. Granted Arlington did not have their starting QB, Suffern with DiMarsico almost beat them, which tells you a lot since Arlington finished third in all of AA.
Next year will not be a fair comparison as a barometer for this year’s Suffern team (when DiMarsico was healthy) since they will not have a player like DiMarsico. Suffern has not had a player like that at RB in quite sometime. Next year I expect Suffern to return back to what they were, but I hope I am wrong as well.
Under the Stands,
The senior bowl is an opportunity for coaches to see a recruit in person, as most college seasons are over now.
So, it is a recruiting tool, no question.
No way a Senior Bowl should be played now, its been two weeks that most of the kids who would be in the game have been away from football, and many haven’t played in almost a month. Its too hard to play after being away that long and would be asking for injuries. Plus its winter sports season for many and basketball, hockey, and wrestling practices and scrimmages are underway. If I was a coach I would never let my players play in that game now.
I heard a few weeks ago some of the Rockland coaches wanted to have a senior game for the Rockland players. What happened with that?
The Dirty is right! Flaherty should be on list over Jack Near, this kid didn’t even play much this year and besides,Bronxville won without him!
