Linebackerville

November
20

I’ve gotten to watch the Bronxville football team play several times this season, including the last two weeks. Two things have really struck me.

The first is their ability to block downfield. They’re as good at that as any team I’ve seen this year, maybe ever. They finish blocks. And they sure don’t miss them.

The other thing is how good the linebackers are. I had a story in today’s Journal News about the unit of John Shkreli, Hart Mechlin and Artie Westerfield. Shkreli and Mechlin are both third-year starters. Westerfield is a first-year guy who was lauded by teammates for the time he put in during the offseason.

All three teams still playing are blessed with talent at the linebacker position; New Rochelle has Lou DiRienzo Jr. and Montel Paris; and Nanuet has Gabe Ostrow, Bret Bonomolo, and Lyle Birrittella.

Is that a sign? Do great linebackers indicate playoff success?

of course great linebackers improve playoff success!!!

If you have some horses up on the D-line it only amplifies the linebacker capability. The horses don’t even need to be that big or strong as long as they play with intensity (heart) The linebackers will take care of the rest.

  2. Linebackers

As you stated; very critical and the difference between a 2-3 yard “stuff” and a 7-10 to 20 yard big gainer. Bronxville’s running success has been in large part predicated on the offensive line’s being able to single block it’s counterpart and then with Nichols and Mechlin bursting through and taking out a linebacker or two, it’s off to the races for the RB’s with the secondary forced to make way too many tackles ending in big gains. On the other side, the D-line has also handled the blocks well and not allowed the FB’s to burst through which allows the Bronxville LB’s to shoot the gaps and really plug up the middle plus with their speed and excellent open field tackling no one has been able to turn it upfield by going to the outside which leads to a lot of 3 and outs. Now you’re in a game of field position that most teams are not going to be able to handle.
