Super Saturday

November
15

All three remaining Section 1 teams will play their state semifinals on Saturday at Dietz Stadium in Kingston. The winners go to the Dome:

Saturday
Class C

Bronxville vs. Section 2’s Hoosick Falls, noon

Class B
Nanuet vs. Section 2’s Schalmont, 4 p.m.

Class AA
New Rochelle vs. Section 2’s Saratoga Springs, 8 p.m.

The plan at the moment is to broadcast all three games on lohud.com. I’ll get confirmation this week.

Varsity Central Chat has been rescheduled for Thursday night at 7 p.m. I’m out of the office Wednesday to attend the Frank McGuire Award dinner in the city. Rye coach Dino Garr is among the honorees.

In case you’re interested, here’s the schedule for State Championship Weekend in Syracuse:

Saturday
Class D, noon
Class C, 3 p.m.
Class A, 6 p.m.

Sunday
Class AA, 1 p.m.
Class B, 4 p.m.

I also want to give a special congratulations to my best friend, Frank Fiore, who has guided the Eastchester girls soccer team to the state semifinals in Class A. Your idiot friends are very proud. Hopefully this success doesn’t go to his head the way the 2002 Fantasy Football championship did.

Who are you? Bill Simmons now? Next we’re gonna hear about ridiculous Vegas stories.

    :-)

Just kidding, congrats to Eastchester girls and Coach Fiore!

I must say, I know it may sound crazy but I kind of have a bad taste in my mouth coming out of this weekend. Let’s start with Class D thought it was a toss up Tuckahoe could have beaten that team, but they did have a tough challenge and lost, I can make peace with that. In Class B and C it was obvious these two powers were going to steamroll through into the semis, just too big, too strong, too tought, to discipline, and to determined. Look for that to continue next week. In Class AA so great to see New Ro get a win, knew that game was going to come down the the end and it was a classic. That’s a great rivalry goin on there and I would love to see Monroe come down and play a regular season game against someone from Section 1, class program they have up there, and amazing win for New Ro, hopefully they come back and don’t have a hang over. Now the game that’s giving me that sick stomach. How can you come of winning your first section title in 13 years or however long It was and be over confident. You didn’t run away with the section either. Cornwall is one of the top programs in the state, they were in the state playoffs the last 4 years and have beaten some great section 1 teams, and you go into that game thinking your going to walk all over them? What a disgrace, its a shame that the players act that way but even more of a shame the coaches let that fly. Roosevelt has so much talent and had a great season, it really sucks to hear that from the players after the game that they were looking past an opponent in the STATE PLAYOFFS.

  3. man

And what is even worse they played like it too, with all the turnovers and penalties, and countless more carless plays. And at the end they were right there too.

  4. Lion

    Hey man,

Maybe Cornwall was just better than the section 1 class A teams? Roosevelt has great talent and a great season but in my eyes the Cornwall win is no surprise. I take no shame from Roosevelt not winning.

Section 1 class A can take pride in its depth of good teams, but the rest of the State might have a handful of teams better than what we had this year.

  5. factoid

Cornwall is the home of hundreds if not thousands of West Point grduates. All the parents were athletes. Never be surprised when Cornwall wins.

  6. LetsBeHonest

3 Section 1 teams against 3 section 2 teams. Looks like great matchups! LETS GO SECTION 1!!!

  7. fan

    Man
Who are you anyways? and who really cares what kind of taste you have in your mouth, go brush your teeth. These are HS kids who have never been in that position before, im sure they already feel bad about losing. They dont need some monday morning QB to talk trash about them. GET A LIFE

  8. man

I wasn’t saying it surprised me that Cornwall won, they are a great team and a great program and deserved to win 100%. The fact that they have such a strong program is all the more reason your shouldnt look past them. Fan, I don’t care what you say, I am a Section 1 football fan, and Roosevelt Graduate who was at the game and disappointed by what I read in quotes from the players. Its not Monday Morning quarterback (still Sunday Night, could I intrest you in a calendar). I didn’t bash anyone by name or anything like that just simply stating it was disappointing to read the quotes and like Kevin said as well you could see it in their play. Can’t look past anyone in the playoff especially a team like Cornwall.

  9. CHSFL

Has everyone completely overlooked the fact Stepinac got beat down by a winless team?

    So much for them.

  10. class a

you gotta love all the class a teams being humbled, i would have loved for roosevelt to continue to the dome, but finnaly i no longer have to listen to class a fans tell me how good class a is.

  11. Domination

    hahahh the 2002 fantasy championship

  12. Blog will perish

Maybe section 1 class a is not that good. When was the last time it did anything on the state level? Maybe we are to busy claiming how great they are for section 1. Just a thought.

  13. 3 Yards And A Cloud Of Dust

I am not holding my breath about the games being broadcasted on Lo Hud. Also, thank goodness we had 3 teams win, if not, then Kevin would have been relegated to covering the soccer finals in Oneonta. That would have been painful for everyone involved.

  14. oldnintheway

I’m sick and tired of some of you clowns coming on here and saying what a “disgrace” Roosevelt was for not honoring the “oh-so-mighty” Section 1. They’re a bunch of kids, and by their OWN admission, they screwed up. It happens! They didn’t blame their thin roster (which could have contributed to wearing them down) or anything else, they just plain admitted that they underestimated their opponent. Fact is, this team has had more naysayers all year long than any other team in Section 1. And they proved us all wrong. Once again, after the Rye game, they didn’t go into the tank, they responded with big wins enroute to a Section 1 crown. Bottom line is Coach Meade and his players don’t have to answer to any one of us. They are kicking themselves right now, but they owe us NOTHING!! And if anyone thinks Cornwall would have had no chance against Rye or anyone else in Section 1, remember this: 1) Nyack 14-Cornwall 13 last year, and Nyack KNOWS it could have easily gone the other way. 2)2006: Cornwall 13-Harrison 10 and everyone thought that would be a cakewalk for Harrison.

  15. hsfb guy mobile

Stepinac lost that game because no one cared about it. It was a non playoff game and they are focused more on the turkey bowl vs white plains. The reason they even had that game was due to the upset loss in the quarters by a AAA team.

Also the nys military academy prep school is in cornwall, just like it was mentioned the parents are graduates of west point, the athletic background is there.

  16. Hoops fan

    hsfb guy mobile,
I haven’t seen either of the last two Stepinac games. Both seemed like relatively surprising outcomes. What info can you share? How did Gilligan-Evans and Goodman play? Powell was out both games, right? Will he be healthy for the Turkey Bowl? I hate to ever hear that “no one cared” about a game, despite it being a non-playoff game. I hope the truth is closer to them coming out flat.

  17. Nate

Stepinac was apparently over hyped just like Iona. Then again no one cared about Stepinac about Hoops Fan so only Iona Prep was.

  18. Hoops fan

    Nate,
What the hell are you talking about? “No one cared”?? I think its fair to say there are plenty of “people who care” about every local football team. If you don’t think there are a lot Stepinac fans out there, show up to WPHS on Thanksgiving morning and you can meet a couple thousand of them.

I’ve never noticed a “Nate” post a comment on these blogs before. So this is your first contribution? You make your first comment to knock a team, fans and an individual. Classy.

  19. Roosevelt

Everyone is correct about Roosevelt but let’s not get too crazy becaue it’s still HS sports and they fell prey to something that happens even to good professional teams, ie looking past their current opponent and that’s something it’s very difficult for any coach to counteract. Roosevelt had a great season and maybe they actually overachieved a bit but they were a solid team that came to believe in themselves but then, IMHO began to think they were a team of destiny and that other teams were just going to lay down for them or the fates were going to intervene on their behalf. Obviously wrong on both counts but don’t discount the fact that they won a section title and that is nothing to sneeze at. Remember 95% of teams are going to lose their last game no matter what and that is always going to lead to regret and disappointment. This type of disappointment, however, can be used to help a team and a program and also give plenty of fodder to a coach. If they get to this level again next year or the year after, the coach can now warn them in a very concrete way of what happened to the ‘09 team and that takes nothing away from what they accomplished this year. The recriminations are that they had hoped for and probably were capable of so much more but fell short. You can’t excoriate them for being honest though because to a player, they all manned up and admitted as much so they certainly don’t need any outside ctiticism to remind them of what they already know and I am sure that lesson won’t be lost on them nor the players that follow them. If they started complaining about a million other things I think it would be fair to criticize them but this will have been a learning experience for most, if not all, of them about how difficult it is to get to that next level and to never take anything for granted. Congrats to them on a great season and sorry they could not have gone further.

  20. ScottinRye

    Rosevelt:

I hope that this Section title will convince more kids to participate in football. With graduation your roster is dangerously close to failing to qualify for the Section 1 minimum.

  21. Roosevelt

thanks Scott, it’s not my “roster” which is perhaps why I can afford to be more philosophical about it, but you are 100% correct, success breeds success and, hopefully , more kids will be encouraged to participate because I know in my own kids’ cases they got far more out of it than just the actual playing of the sport. It’s much harder to deal with failure and defeat than success although that can also have it’s own difficulties. The bottom llne though is that while it’s cliche, it’s completely true that it’s not how many times you get knocked down; it’s how many times you get back up.
