Since we already know who the Top 3 Game Balls are going to, I’ll split the rest into two posts. Here’s the first set of recipients, plus a list of honorable mention:
Week 8 Game Balls
Honorable mention: Brendan Connolly, Edgemont; Reuben Frank, Poughkeepsie; Brendan Nagle, Rye; Nolan Robinson, Pleasantville; Josh Grant, Yonkers; Paul Grimaldi, Lakeland; Gabe Ostrow, Nanuet; Donovan Walker, Roosevelt; Matt Wheeler, Scarsdale; Joe Tralli, Croton-Harmon; Caleb Gilligan-Evans, Stepinac; Timmy Muller, Fox Lane; Mike Celenza, Albertus Magnus; Ben Spiegelman, Scarsdale; Hart Mechlin, Bronxville; Matt Laccetti, Ossining; Devonte Brailsford, Dobbs Ferry.
Top 10 performances
10. Matt Deiana, Somers: The Tuskers were able to peel themselves off the pavement after losing to Poughkeepsie and avenge a loss that festered for over a year. Credit Matt Deiana for leading that charge. The senior running back rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries in the 27-0 win over Nyack. Deiana also recorded 10 tackles with a sack to help give Somers one more game, versus Ossining on Friday.
7. Jameson Pickel, John Jay: Few realize the season Pickel has to put together this season. He carried John Jay to its third win in a row on Saturday, a 42-32 thriller over Scarsdale. Pickel ran for 183 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns, and was 18-of-27 passing for 143 yards and two touchdowns. There might not have been a more productive double-threat quarterback in Class AA this season.
8. Sal Sulla, North Rockland: A week after being used sparingly out of the backfield because of injury, Sulla made one of the most dramatic plays of the season. With Saturday’s Class AA semifinal with Arlington tied 14-14, the senior running back broke a 65-yard touchdown run to put the Red Raiders into the championship for the seventh time this decade. Sulla was also stellar defensively as North Rockland shut down an Arlington team that had scored 98 points combined in its previous three games.
7. Joey Lapopolo and Jonny McGhee, New Rochelle: Does this defense have to do it all? It seems like it each week as the Huguenots turned in another commanding performance in their 24-7 win over White Plains in the AA semis. Lapopolo returned a fumble 22 yards for New Rochelle’s first score and McGhee sealed it late, returning an interception 28 yards for a score. It was the second time McGhee put White Plains to rest with a second-half interception return this season. The kid has a flair for the dramatic.
The rest of the list will be posted Tuesday night. The Player and Coach of the Week will be announced on Wednesday’s edition of Varsity Central Chat, which starts at 7 p.m.

After watching Brendan Nagle live vs Eastchester, Roosevelt and POK, I have to say, the kid is super 11. Wow.
POK seems like a team always in a 4th down situation, but always pulls something out. Except against Eastchester. I think they will find an answer to Roosevelt duo of Walker and Thomas. They have the speed to counter them.
Josh Graham is the epitome of the phrase, speed kills. He is deadly on turf.
do you think that brandon richards #22 of nyack could make all section?
watched pok and rye on tv , very impressed with ryes o – line very big holes for running backs most of the game except 4th qtr best o-line i have watched all year.
reuben frank only honorable mention? Poughkeepsie doesn’t have another game this week without him.
Kevin,
Im hoping you missed this kid…but RCK QB Sal Cuccia 9-14 186 4td’s with 2-3 legitimate drops?...in a rematch vs Mahopac and chance vs JJCR to go to a bowl game??I know hes not in your lineup now…maybe rethink it??Hes been the most consistent QB in AA outside of Loussedes and maybe the Suffern kid…his stats dwarf Schilling as hes near 1000 yards with 9tds and 1 int…lets give fair and balanced coverage…OK?
I hope that Sleepy’s o-line gets some love with a game ball.
dutchess fan—dwarf what??you are an idiot shilling is also very close to 1000 and ran for close to 500 while playing hurt,he was also playing in PLAYOFF GAMES- was rck in the playoffs??
DWARF WHAT??SHILLING HAS ALSO THROWN FOR CLOSE TO 1000 AND RAN FOR CLOSE TO 500 AND HAS THROWN 9 TOUCHDOWNS WHILE PLAYING HURT..THEY WERE ALSO PLAYING IN THE playoffs WAS RCK IN THE PLAYOFFS??
isn’t maghee the guy who didn’t show up for preseason? gotta wonder how the rest of the team feels about that.
Scary, that information is false. He did not show up to the OFFSEASON workouts/practices.
1-c
Where were you when RCK beat Carmel? Does Carmel run wing t? Oh, I forgot they run SPREAD! Check out there attempts, completion ratio and int then talk!
1-C,
Didnt relaize he had that many yards…I wasnt taking a shot at the kid..hes likely the best overall QB in the section that Im aware of and has done it for 3 years…my point was outside of Dutchess County you hear little of Sam Loussedes from Arlington and Cuccia from RCK and they are in my mind amongst the top AA qb’s in the Section..I will say this…Schilling played RCK once and lost..both kids with gaudy stats..Schilling had north of 180 yds passing and 4 tds and Cuccia was nearly perfect…something like 10-11 with about 150yds and 2 td’s..same thing when Carmel played Arlington the first time…both QB’s carried there teams..Loussedes hit Nate Picket with about 1:30 left and Schilling came right down the field and pulled it out on a long pass to a secondary receiver..in any event all 3 kids have had nice seasons..I will say this..it seems Schilling wasnt surrounded by as much talent as Loussedes at Arlington and Cuccia at RCK from what I saw this year and especially compared to years past for Carmel? Thanks for correcting me…GO Poughkeepsie!!!!!!!
yes, def. Nagle should be super ll he is a beast and gave everything he had on the field all the time…a true superstar…and a hell of a nice kid..!!
