How do they come up with these seedings? How in the world is Iona Prep a 5 seed, I was thinking they would be like a 7?
Fordham draws Holy Cross who they lost to earlier this season. The following week started a winning streak for the Rams that helped them qualify for the AAA bracket, and they have done some things differently since. Should be a good one.
AS far as Iona, they use some sort of power rankings in the CHSFL, I think the fact they played a tough schedule helped.
Kev. Hate to break it to you but these will not be the seedings for the AA. Hayes and Mount will not be in the same bracket. They will make a few tweaks to ensure that they will either A. Play against each other for the championship or B. Play on Thanksgiving.
so stepinac goes 8-0 and they don’t even have a 1st round play-off game at home???
gman:
you stated: “They will make a few tweaks” hahaha, the same old story with the good old boys club in the catholic league!
coincidence that this involves mount & hayes??? this is to funny!!!
Fordham plays Xavier & Mount Plays Hayes on Thanksgiving day. The league will not schedule the against each other in playoffs. If Mount & Hayes were to win they will switch brackets to avoid game. it has nothing to do with the OLD boy network
would love to see Stepinac play Mount. Classic game that was one a great rivalry
Kevin,
Thanks for posting the playoff brackets.
Gman,
It makes sense to move Hayes/Mount to opposite sides of the bracket since play on Thanksgiving.
I do think its unusual that Stepinac finished 8-0 in the AA league and ends up with the 5th seed. The CHSFL uses a power rating system. Earlier in the season, I think Stepinac was rated 6th or 7th in the entire CHSFL according to the power rating system. Apparently, they just automatically make the bottom 4 AAA teams the top 4 seeds in the AA playoffs. Maybe they should consider using the power rating system to determine the AA seeds next year.
chsfl,
I agree. Mount vs. Stepinac would be a great matchup.
What? – Its a shame, but thats a big part of the downside of being in AA.
Years ago when I played, a AA team could make the AAA playoffs if their power points ranked them within the Top 8 in the CHSFL.
Nowadays, no matter how good a team does in AA, the best they can be ranked is #13, and #1 – #12 all go to the teams that played the AAA schedule.
Its unfortunate, but it makes it very competitive and makes the team truly fight for that championship title.
Go Stepinac!
what?,
As hoops fan stated, the bottom four teams in the AAA become the top seeds in the AA playoffs. Ironically, we were in the exact opposite situation last season. We missed the AAA playoffs by 1 powerpoint to mount and became the 1 seed in AA, making it back to the championship game.
All things considered I don’t think its a bad system. In fairness, it would be awfully difficult to rank the 4 teams that play a AA schedule against the 4 teams that play a AAA schedule no matter how you do it.
On a separate note, I heard Iona played with a healthy Jeff Mack and Tyrae Woodson-Samuels and shut out Farrel 35-0 on Saturday. Tyrae has thrown for over 900 yards the last 3 weeks. Mack apparently had 4 tds rushing. With a healthy team, Iona can be very dangerous in the playoffs.
catholic:
i disagree with you but at least you, whoever you are, admit that there is an “old boy network”
play-offs are suppose to be the most important part of any sports season and i don’t agree with “tweaking” seeds/brackets because of turkey bowls. i understand, but don’t agree.
what would happen if fordham didn’t make the “aaa” and was in the “aa.” now you would have to tweak almost the entire play-off system b/c of the turkey bowls between xavier/fordham and mount/hayes?
Iona Prep I believe is a 5 seed because the top 8 in AAA has Iona Prep at Number 5. With that the Top 8 in AAA is your usual 1-8 with the seedings more legit. Fordham is in sixth place…believe it or not Iona has a decent record, there are teams with alot worse records…
Funny I just asked the AA debate to the Stepinac Coaches today..and theres a blog on it hahahaha…
Apparently the bottom 4 AAA teams get the top 4 seeds…I noticed it when Stepinac won the SJB game and then announced they were going to play Saint Francis AT Saint Francis. Then the top 4 AA teams are the bottom seeds…so instead of that home game The AA-A champs are a 5 vs 4 matchup. And the best part is the Top 4 in AA have better records than the Bottom 4 AAA teams that dropped down.
I see no one mentioned the Other 4 AA teams…I think they have an A bracket playoff right? If not they should, those four teams should be in the playoffs so an A title is better than nothing.
It all makes sense..that way EVERY team can get playoff action, maybe a Level down than normal, but hey they do call the two leagues AAA-AA and AA-A: Teams are going to be dropped down to compensate….I just think the AAA droppers should be the Bottom 4 seeds in the AA and let Hayes and Stepinac have home field advantage due to their records and seasons.
HSFB Guy,
I agree with you, it does seem strange to have Stepinac go undefeated, dominant the AA league, beat the #6 AAA team, yet end up seeded 5th in the AA playoffs. Ironically, had Stepinac played in the AAA this year, they had a decent chance to end up with the 5th or 6th seed in AAA. It would seem odd to put the #4 ranked AA regular season team seeded higher than the #9 AAA team, but why not seed the AA playoffs by the power ranking so that the strength of the teams individual seasons is reflected. Or at least seed the top 2 AA teams #1 and #2 in the AA playoffs, then the bottom 4 AAA teams 3-6, then the 3-4 AA teams seeded 7-8. In all fairness, last year when Stepinac was one of the bottom 4 AAA teams and got the top seed in the AA playoffs I didn’t voice any objection – it seemed logical to me then.
stepinac plays st francis AT St. Anthony’s SUNDAY @ 130
The reason why Stepinac is in the AA playoffs is because last year they were in the AAA and asked to get moved down to the AA. So it is no ones fault but their own that they are in the AA playoffs and didnt want to compete in the AAA playoffs and they did not want to be in the AAA league. They like to feel good about themselves and beat up on horrible AA teams and think their good. Funny right.
hahahaha-
my guess is u either go or went to fordham? hey didnt stepinac beat u again this year?
hahaha,
Where do you get that information? From my understanding, Stepinac was all set to be in a 14 team AAA this year until Moore Catholic dropped out of the CHSFL. So the #13 and #14 pre-season AAA power rated teams dropped down to AA, so that there would be enough AA teams. The Power Ratings are compiled by a formula based on the records of the Varsity and JV teams plus according for the players that graduate – it has nothing to do with choice. Everything I know about Stepinac says they would’ve rather played in the AAA. Besides, Stepinac beat Fordham and Fordham ended up finishing 6th in the AAA. I think Stepinac would’ve finished at least 6th had they played Fordham’s schedule.
ha ha ha, I think you have lost touch with that the CHSFL stands for. They try to put every team in the best possible position to succeed. and they listen to the coaches and use a great deal of data to appropriatly place teams in the right divisions.
Stepinac lost a boat load of talent last year including thier QB and arguable one of the best backs in the county. Not only that but the coaches of the CHSFL vote on where teams should be ranked and listen to the coaches about why they should be there. It is not just the coach stating this is where we need to be, it is a total league decision.
Is Stepinac a good team… absolutely. Did they think they would be this good in December of last year…I doubt it. The reality of all this is that Stepinac has year in and year out been a AA school.
And to answer the rest of the questions about why they are a 5 seed is because the 4 that missed the AAA playoffs automatically get the top seeds for the AA due to them playing a tougher schedule.
Regardless the AA playoffs will be very competitive.

IonaPower,
Does Iona have a chance against St. Joseph’s now that they are healthy? Was anyone out when they played in the regular season? I was very impressed with Iona’s team last year. Is the AAA that much tougher this year or was Iona last years team just that much better than this years?
Stepgrad
Jeff Mack was out the last 3 weeks before playing last week against Farrell. Iona will have to play a mistake free game to beat St. Joseph on the road. Mack was out when they played 2 weeks ago but Iona was in the game before St. Joes returned an INT for a Touchdown. St. Joes also returned a kickoff fro a TD in that game. With Mack and Woodson I give a Iona a chance but they have to play a flawless game.
As far as the CHSFL AAA, the league is very rough. When you see programs like Mount and Farrell not qualifying in the top 8 that illustrates how competitive the league is on a yearly basis. Chaminade as a # 8 seed also is another example.
Iona’s team last year is by far better. A lot of high caliber limemen and wr’s were lost from that team.
Stepgrad,
Ionapower knows far more about Iona than I do. But I would also observe that the CHSFL AAA is also far stronger this year than last. This year there are 3 CHSFL AAA teams in the ESPN tri-state top 10. Last year, I think Iona was the only one at this point in the season. Holy Cross who is the #4 CHSFL team just beat St Josephs by the Sea and right outside of that Top 10 list.
IONA POWER OR HOOP FAN COULD YOU TELL ME WERE ALL THESE SCHOOLS ARE ..THE ONLY SCHOOL I KNOW IS CARDINAL HAYES BECAUSE I REBUILT AND LANDSCAPE THEIR FIELD MANY YEARS AGO DO ALL THESE SCHOOL RECUIT AND OFFER DEALS FOR PROMISING PLAYERS NO MATTER WHERE THEY LIVE
Big Joe,
Good question. The schools are located:
AAA
Holy Trinity – Hicksville, LI
St Anthony’s – Melville, LI
Holy Cross – Bayside, Queens
St Joseph’s by the Sea – Staten Island
Iona
Fordham Prep – on the campus of Fordham Univ – near Arthur Ave in the Bx, I have a feeling you know Arthur Ave
Xaverian – Bay Ridge, Brooklyn
Chaminade – Mineola, LI
AA
Farrell – Staten Island
Mount – Bronx (Sandford Blvd near MV border)
Kellenberg – Uniondale, LI
St Francis Prep – Fresh Meadows, Queens
Stepinac
Hayes
Xavier – 17th street in Manhattan
St John the Baptist – West Islip, LI
The Long Island and Staten Island schools in the CHSFL are far, far bigger in enrollment than Iona and Stepinac. St Francis Prep in Queens I think is the largest catholic school in America. The bigger the school the less inclined they seem to be “reaching out” to potential students that goes for sports and academics. I believe Iona is the smallest enrollment in the AAA. Stepinac was the smallest AAA school last year and 3rd smallest out of the 20 CHSFL teams this year.
Generally speaking, the Long Island and Staten Island teams don’t get flack for recruiting like the schools in NJ do, so I’d assume it happens far less often in large part due to the large enrollments. The LI/SI teams are all pretty big (also big #’s of kids on the teams) and tend to rely on big, strong, talented lines more so than tremendous skill position players that would tend to be more caught up in “recruiting” situations. Schools in the city don’t seem to complain about recruiting – I guess they have a more balanced view of things than certain Westchester fans do, so you don’t hear much about Mount or Fordham in terms of recruiting (despite Mount arguably having an equal or better team than Iona over the past 20 years or so). Also, any kid in NYC can choose their high school, either public or private, so talk of recruiting is minimal, particulary in football.
There are teams that have a good amount of big-time talent – Xaverian had two big-time players last year, a 6’6” QB that went to Purdue and a lineman to UVA. A Sr LB this year is going to Syracuse next year. Generally, there are about 3-5 major college football players every year out of the CHSFL AAA, but most people seem to accept that as a combination of good coaching and excellent competition. There have also been an equal or greater number of big-time players coming out of the CHSFL every year since its inception over 50 years ago, so most knowledgable fans don’t excuse their success simply with “recruiting.”
While St Anthony’s has been a dominant team on Long Island for a long time in the CHSFL, there are several other public schools on Long Island who are very good as well (i.e. William Floyd, Bellport, Garden City, etc). The talk of “recruiting” only tends to come up when a team has been dominating the competition, for instance in NJ the top 3-4 teams every year are generally catholic schools (Don Bosco, St Peters, Bergen Catholic, St Joes in Montvale) which can lead to a lot of talk. On LI, there is a lot more parity and from friends I have out there, less talk from public school fans about recruiting. St. Anthony’s coach, Rich Reichert is also a nationally reknowned coach – he could probably win big at any school he coached at.
iona power/hoops fan
What is the scouting report on st joes sea. I knew they were good but i thought they would be a higher seed. What type of O do they run and what positions do their better players play? Is iona fully healthy, mentally and physically? how about a prediction?
dbp,
St Joes by the Sea is a big, big team with two very talented RBs and a very good running QB. They rarely pass the ball, which is rare in the CHSFL. They play serious smash mouth football up front and are very, very physical. Their offense is definitely going to put points up on the board – they scored 42 the first time against Iona two weeks ago and 38 last week against Holy Cross. They were undefeated and ranked #1 until they lost to Holy Cross last week. Holy Cross is very good, but it was a bit of an upset (Holy Cross has only lost to #1 Holy Trinity and #2 St Anthony’s).
The weak spot I see for SJBS is defense – particularly against the pass. They gave up 28 pts to Iona without Jeff Mack two weeks ago and 50 to Holy Cross. Holy Cross has the best QB/WR combo in the city/CHSFL, but 50 pts is a lot regardless. I think with a healthy Jeff Mack Iona should be able to put up at least as many points as they did the first game, possibly a TD or two more. Iona’s defense must’ve played well shutting out Farrell last week – maybe they’ve turned a corner defensively. I expect a high scoring, exciting game between two totally different offensive teams each with suspect defenses which should only make it more exciting and high scoring. IonaPower will have a better scouting report than I.
Hoops Fan
You are spot on in your analysis
hoops fan,
very good blog.also may i add,if you are a good athelete, fair student and can not afford the tuition you will receive financial aid to many CHSAA schools.many times the student will seek out the school and i know this for a fact with one student at the mount last year.if you have a pick between a CHSAA school or a public city one it is a no brainer.if this is recruiting so be it.
mrvolo,
I couldn’t agree with you more. I’m sure there are cases with schools reaching out to students these days, but more and more kids/parents/youth coaches/families are more empowered than ever to reach out on their own. I know several cases of that happening as well as many, many tri-state schools.
I would add to what you said about good athlete/good student/good kid who needs help with tuition getting financial aid by saying that not only does that happen at local catholic schools – it happens at almost any private high school (and colleges) in the country. Private schools all over want diversity (both ethnic and economic) and try to help out talented kids (in sports, academics, music, science, etc) that is not a new phenomenon.
basketball blogers,
i just found out that the mount has a junior transfer from new rochelle high school to play point guard to replace williams and team will be as good or better than last year.expect a lot of cries of how could it happen.when you go from public to private you do not miss a year!i know his name but do not want to put it out.
mrvolo:
don’t get to excited – he’s not that good.
